Have you ever considered that your regular commute to and fro work could potentially shave off some years from your life? And no, we’re not talking about road traffic accidents but the slow poison we’re inhaling unbeknownst to us: air pollutants. A new study published in <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(24)00114-1/fulltext">The Lancet Planetary Health</a> by an international team of researchers reveals a terrifying truth: over 7% of daily deaths in 10 major <keyword id="20026638" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-cities" source="keywords">Indian cities</keyword> are attributed to <keyword id="19900550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-pollution" source="keywords">air pollution</keyword> caused by <keyword id="22110704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PM2-5-pollutants" source="keywords">PM2.5 pollutants</keyword> exceeding the World Health Organization's (WHO) safe limits. These PM2.5 pollutants are microscopic particles, 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter, that come from <keyword id="2839914" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vehicle-emissions" source="Orion">vehicle emissions</keyword> and industrial activities. Imagine tiny daggers — that's what these PM2.5 particles are like, infiltrating deep into lungs and even the bloodstream, wreaking havoc on our health. The study found that PM2.5 levels breach WHO guidelines a staggering 99.8% of the time in these cities. The analysis covered major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Shimla and Varanasi. A staggering 7.2% of deaths in these cities, translating to roughly 33,000 annually, were associated with short-term PM2.5 levels exceeding the WHO's recommended limit (15 micrograms per cubic metre) between 2008 and 2019. Delhi, unfortunately, takes the crown for the most polluted. A shocking 11.5% of its annual deaths are attributed to air pollution, translating to a devastating 12,000 lives lost each year. The link between PM2.5 and mortality is undeniable. Researchers found that a mere 10 microgram per cubic metre increase in these pollutants correlates with a 1.4% rise in daily deaths. This risk factor doubles when considering only levels below India's air quality standards, which are, worryingly, less strict than the WHO's recommendations. But here's a surprising twist: the association between PM2.5 and death is even stronger in cities with generally cleaner air, like Bengaluru and Chennai. This suggests that locally produced pollutants, from sources like construction dust or waste burning, might be significant contributors. There is a glimmer of hope, however. The study emphasises that implementing stricter air quality standards and utilising proven pollution control methods from other parts of the world can be game changers. Lowering and enforcing stricter air quality limits will save tens of thousands of lives per year, emphasises Joel Schwartz, a co-author from Harvard University. This study serves as a stark wake-up call. The air we breathe in many Indian cities is a gamble, with every breath potentially harmful. Taking decisive action to curb pollution is not just about a cleaner environment, it's about saving the lives of millions of Indians.

While the demand for studying abroad is increasing and the outflow is also increasing, student expenditure is soaring and is likely to touch $75-85 billion by 2024, which will be an increase of more than 2 times from 2019. While the sector faced a stunted growth in 2020-21 as international borders were closed to combat Covid, it is now expected to regain momentum as things become normal, according to the report by Bengaluru-based market research firm <keyword id="3359665" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RedSeer" source="Orion">RedSeer</keyword>. "We are bullish about this segment's growth in the coming years. Our research shows that the total number of Indian students studying abroad will stand at around 18 lakh by 2024," said Abhishek Gupta, engagement manager at RedSeer. Nearly 7,00,000 students applied to study abroad in 2019. "In 2019 alone, around 420k students headed out but the total number of applicants was around 1.7 times. This colossal increase is due to factors like rise in GDP in the past two decades leading to more consumption and awareness about education abroad," Gupta mentioned. The growth in the outflow rates had outpaced domestic student growth by 6 times in 2016-19 which shows the massive demand that this segment is witnessing. "Our research shows that currently, 770k Indian students are studying abroad from 440K in 2016 which is a 20 per cent growth. On the other hand, the growth in the domestic region has been merely 3 per cent when compared to the demand for education abroad," the analyst informed. This allows DetectGPT to use log probabilities to find out if the given passage has been generated using a given LLM. DetectGPT to help teachers detect content generated using ChatGPT by students

The university will be set up in collaboration with various universities in India. This will be made available in different Indian languages and information and communications technology (ICT) formats. High-quality e-content in all spoken languages will be developed for delivery via internet, mobile phones, TV and radio through “digital teachers”. The goal behind this initiative, which is open for the citizens of the country, is to skill, upskill or reskill. It will also provide API-based trusted skill credentials, payment and discovery layers to find relevant jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities. A National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) will also be aligned with the industry dynamic to promote continuous skilling avenues, sustainability, and employability. She further added that a TV channel named ‘e-Vidya’, will also be implemented to provide supplementary education to children from class 1 to 12, especially for children in rural areas, to make up for the loss of the learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sitharaman said, “We recognise the need to impart supplementary teaching and to build a resilient mechanism for education delivery. For this purpose, ‘one class-one TV channel’ programme of PM eVIDYA will be expanded from 12 to 200 TV channels. This will enable all states to provide supplementary education in regional languages for classes 1-12.” Additionally, 750 virtual labs in science and mathematics, and 75 skilling e-labs for simulated learning environments, will be set-up in 2022-23 to promote crucial critical thinking skills, to give space for creativity. Budget 2022: Digital university to be set up for online learning

The following has been edited for length and clarity.I'm an intellectual-property lawyer, and I live in Bengaluru, India. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-winter-silicon-valley-bengaluru-india-so-far-dodged-2022-11">Bengaluru is known as the Silicon Valley of India</a>, and I work for a tech company there.I was excited to move to Bengaluru from Noida, India, in 2019 to start my first job after getting my Master of Laws, also called an LLM. It took me a month to find an apartment because it's difficult for single women to get <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/18/world/asia/india-single-women-apartments.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">housing in India</a>. Luckily, I was able to room with a colleague in her apartment until I was able to have my own place.I was happy to find a place that met my requirements and was within my budget.<h2>My parents want me to buy a house, but I'm at peace living in my rented apartment</h2>My apartment community has a good landlord. It's in a gated community in a residential area near my work. I spend about 20% of my income on rent, utilities, domestic help, and groceries.My parents tell me to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ray-dalio-investment-housing-market-stocks-bridgewater-real-estate-mortgage-2023-6">invest in a house</a> — which I could with my current salary — but I feel that buying a home would tie me down. I love to travel, and I need flexibility in my life.If I bought a house right now, I'd have to spend 30% to 40% of my income on my mortgage. That's a big jump from what I spend on housing. If I had a partner who was also contributing financially, I'd feel more comfortable buying a house — but right now, I find that scary and limiting for my lifestyle.<h2>In India, work experience is more important than degrees</h2>I got my Bachelor of Laws, known as an LLB, from a public university in Delhi, India, which was very affordable. My parents helped me pay for that degree, so I didn't have to take out a loan. For my LLM, I got a full-ride, merit-based scholarship to a university in Singapore.I wanted to get international experience, so I was excited to be able to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-millennial-housing-prices-income-debt-dreams-2023-6">go to Singapore</a>. But, I got a lot of backlash for pursuing my LLM.In India, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/hr-policies-trends/more-than-8-in-10-indians-say-skills-are-more-important-than-degrees-shows-linkedin-report/articleshow/100001813.cms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">work experience is more important</a> than degrees. When I began working as a lawyer with my LLB, I made a meager salary that was below the poverty level. I eventually got a significant raise by moving to a bigger law firm, but it still wasn't much.<h2>When I quit my job to pursue my LLM, I was told I was committing career suicide</h2>I lost two years of work experience while getting my LLM, but I knew I wanted to specialize as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-intellectual-property-is-profitable-2011-4">an intellectual-property lawyer</a>, so I ignored everyone. After getting my master's, I felt highly qualified and excited to get the job I wanted. Unfortunately, my starting salary was based on the salary I had at my last job with an LLB.In my interviews, employers asked me why I took a break from work and interrupted my job growth. Getting my LLM wasn't a good enough reason for them. But I worked hard. I knew I was highly qualified and highly capable. My salary has increased, and it's much higher than I would've earned with just an LLB, so I have no regrets.<h2>I'm able to save 20% of my salary and spend money on travel</h2>Since I have no debt, I'm able to save and invest 20% of my salary. I work for private companies, so it's important for me to build up my retirement fund. I work with a financial advisor and an accountant to help me invest in mutual funds.About 30% of my income goes into paying taxes. I use the remaining 30% of my money for going out with friends and traveling. Recently, I called my friend and asked her to go to Cambodia with me for the weekend. I also don't want to have to quit my job to be a stay-at-home mom.There's a lot of pressure for someone my age to get married, but luckily, I have supportive parents who pushed me to be independent and live on my own terms.I work 10-hour days, but I love the work that I do. This is exactly the job I wanted when I went to law school, and I love being able to learn and grow in it. Researchers from the <keyword id="12015205" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Universities-of-Case-Western-Reserve" source="Orion">Universities of Case Western Reserve</keyword>, Brown and Harvard studied blood samples of 120 Ohio nursing home residents and 92 health care workers. In particular, they looked at humoral immunity, also called antibody-mediated immunity, to measure the body's defenses against the coronavirus. The findings, published on online preprint medRxiv and being peer-reviewed, showed that individuals' antibody levels decreased more than 80 per cent after six months; the results were the same in older adults (median age 76) and caregivers (median age 48) and old alike. The results support the <keyword id="116293" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centers-for-Disease-Control-and-Prevention" source="Orion">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</keyword> (CDC) recommendation for booster shots, especially for the elderly, due to fading immunity, David Canaday, professor at the School of Medicine at Case Reserve. He added that boosters are even more important as the Delta variant spreads. The team also presented their unpublished results directly to CDC and were urged to get the data out in the public domain as soon as possible "so we could enter conversation and the decision-making process for booster vaccine recommendations", Canaday said. The sharp decline is particularly problematic for the elderly because previous research by Case Reserve showed that within two weeks of receiving the second dose of vaccine and being considered "fully vaccinated", older adults who had not previously contracted Covid-19 already showed a reduced response in antibodies that was substantially lower than the younger caregivers experienced. By six months after vaccination, the blood of 70 per cent of these nursing home residents had "very poor ability to neutralise the coronavirus infection in laboratory experiments", Canaday said. To develop its first title, Studio Sirah raised $830,000 in a round of funding led by Lumikai, an Indian gaming-focused venture capital fund. The startup also plans on releasing more titles in the future that will be inspired by Indian mythologies and history. Studio Sirah was founded by two brothers, Prateek Shah and Abhaas Shah who grew up playing games such as Contra, Age of Empires, Civilization, and Hearthstone. The gaming studio was founded with an aim to bring games that feature Indian content for not just the Indian audience but the global community as well. Studio Sirah will focus on developing mid-core games which are games that have a hardcore theme but can be played in a short time. “We didn’t see any good Indian content that we would like to play as gamers. There are a lot of hypercasual and casual games, but these are not the games that appeal to us,” Abhaas Shah was quoted as saying by VentureBeat. Abhaas also highlighted how the Indian mythologies are still very popular in the country through TV shows. With its games, Studio Sirah hopes to bring a modernised version of these stories to gamers globally. The game Kurukshetra: Ascension will be the first title from Studio Sirah, and it will be a card battler based on the epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. In these kinds of games, the central theme is card battling. “Earn hundreds of unique cards and outplay your opponents in thrilling online duels. Battle mythical monsters and ancient gods in a legendary campaign of ascension where your decisions determine the fate of the universe,” reads the game’s description on the website. The game will also feature fictionalised stories and characters with the focus on “strategic gameplay, immersive art, and a deep progression system.” It will also have heavy themes of philosophical and religious thought. Kurukshetra: Ascension will be available on both mobile and PC when it launches. It is available for pre-registration now on Studio Sirah’s official website.
