<ul><li>There are approximately 470 aeroplanes in the country as of 2017. </li><li>This number is projected to triple by the next decade. </li><li>The country is lagging behind on infrastructural growth that can accommodate new flights and aircrafts. </li></ul>The Indian aviation industry has <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/indian-carriers-are-all-fuelled-up-but-have-nowhere-to-land/articleshow/64641622.cms">hit a snag</a>, the airports are running out of preferred slots and parking space. The lack of flying slots and spaces to park aircrafts is due to the the fact that the airports are super busy and working overtime. What this has lead to, besides flight operators having to fight out for slots and space, is a bottleneck for the country’s growth in aviation. And this issue is mostly affecting newer airline carriers like Vistara and AirAsia which are rapidly expanding its business but have to deal with ‘undesirable’ slots for their operations. Since its inception Indian aviation industry has grown significantly. From 381 airplanes in 2008 to approximately 480 in 2017 along with <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/india-set-to-become-third-largest-buyer-of-passenger-planes/articleshow/58937405.cms">plans</a> to buy more aircrafts to deal with increasing flight demands, the industry’s growth in on an upward curve. The country is looking at nearly 1080 aeroplanes, out of which, more than 700 are scheduled for delivery within the next decade, and 400 within the next five years. As of June last year, a total of 880 aircrafts were on order, with most of them being placed by low-cost carriers such as IndiGo and SpiceJet. And this bulk demand as left <keyword id="6355752" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="airport">airport</keyword> authorities concerned.

 While more aircrafts mean more flights and therefore more money coming in for these airline operators, the airports are not adequately equipped to accommodate all the airplanes at the same time. And this leads to the airports only being able to offer slots at ‘undesirable’ hours, time slots that are not very popular with travellers, for newer flights. The Mumbai and Delhi airports, which are among the busiest in the world, are so packed with flights that they are only offering new slots between 11PM and 5AM. Airports in Goa and Pune are also offering only night slots. Airports in Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata also don't have any slots open during peak timings. What is making matters worse for domestic carriers is that even smaller airports like Jaipur, Jammu, Srinagar and Patna and many more are facing similar issues and can offer time slots that aren’t popular. Currently, 97% of the slots on the Mumbai airport are with the older airline carriers. In Delhi and Bengaluru, 89% and 86% are with older airlines respectively. At Chennai and Pune, the share is about 93% and 91% respectively.

 Airport congestion is a world-wide phenomenon. But the situation is worse in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. The government has big plans of linking smaller, less-served areas to bigger airports under its regional connectivity programme - and this would just mean more congestion. Parking space in airports is also a major concern, but the country has already started to address this problem. All airports, excluding Mumbai, have started building parking bays. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been set in action and plans to add 273 parking bays at 24 airports to help resolve parking issues. AAI is also trying to increase airside capacity by increasing work efficiency to address this congestion problem.

Indian aviation hits a snag: Parking space, flight slots are scarce across airports

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=highway">highway</a> connectivity to India’s prominent <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hindu">Hindu</a> shrines is getting easier, thanks to PM Narendra Modi. Soon after the plan for highway connectivity for the coveted four Hindu religious shrines (Char Dham) in Uttarakhand has been finalised, the BJP led NDA government is planning an expressway between Delhi and Katra, the base for pilgrims going to Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir. 
This expressway once operative would be 600 km long, the longest in India. 
 
The expressway would pass through <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Haryana">Haryana</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=punjab">Punjab</a> and Jammu &amp; Kashmir and would cost more than Rs 15,000 crore. 
"A consultant to study the feasibility of the project is being appointed. It will significantly improve connectivity between Delhi and Srinagar as a national highway is already being built between Jammu and Srinagar," a senior government official revealed. 
 
Road transport &amp; highways minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed that his ministry was working on the plan. 
Presently, travel time from Delhi to Katra is around 11-12 hours, which would be reduced to half once the expressway is built. 
 The government has approved plans for the construction of about 1,000 km of expressways at an estimated cost of Rs 16,680 crore. The approved corridors are Delhi-Chandigarh, Bengaluru-Chennai, Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Meerut, Kolkata-Dhanbad, Delhi-Agra and Vadodara-Mumbai. 
 
"It could be a hightraction project as the traffic flow, both private vehicles and freight, is good on the route," the official added. 
While final meetings would be taking place soon, an official said, getting land wouldn’t be of problem as the states of Haryana, Punjab and J&amp;K have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BJP">BJP</a> in power. The government is already working on a land pooling policy for expressway projects, where a portion of the land acquired from farmers will be returned to them after development.

BI India chats up with this CEO Raj Ramaswamy to find what got him going on the idea: 
 
When did this start? 
We started working on the principle design and development in July 2015. The company is currently headquartered in San Francisco. However, we also have an office in Bengaluru. 
 
People can always use WhatsApp to chat about purchases, can’t they? 
That’s actually one of the most basic questions we asked ourselves - why would anyone not use WhatsApp. Ours is a rich and deeply integrated shopping experience that’s more tuned towards shopping. There are no hassles whatsoever of sharing web links. Recommendation becomes a problem then. It takes 18-25 screen taps to recommend something else. On our app it hardly takes two. 
 
Would you still be able to do price comparisons if Flipkart, Snapdeal or Amazon decides to go app only? 
Absolutely. While we don’t really use web crawling, but we are deeply integrated to the data feeds of these companies. So whether they go app only or not, it actually doesn’t make a difference. 
 
Won’t it help if you synced a user’s search history with that of Amazon, Flipkart or Snapdeal? 
As time passes, more and more players would be open to share more user data with third party players. That would help us enhance our user experience. 
 
Why would I like to be limited to a Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal? 
We’re actively talking to other players to expand our reach. Many companies are open to partnerships. However, we thought it was best to start with the big three. 
 
If I were Flipkart/Snapdeal, why would I like to talk to you? 
As a partner, we’re actually driving traffic to these sites while offering a more comprehensive experience to the end-user. It’s a win-win, really. 
 
Are you worried about the limited real estate most budget smartphones offer? 
People would have access to better smartphones as processing power and memory gets cheaper over time. 
 
There are some fundamental pain-points that we solve. Even if every player had the built-in chat function, we still have the most comprehensive database you can choose from to pick the best product. 
 
The <keyword id="1598642" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Price-comparison">price comparison</keyword> idea makes sense for organized retail. What about unorganized retail? 
We have a self-learning algorithm that checks for exact models and similar models. That way we can scale it. 
 
The app looks much like a marketplace. Was it a conscious decision? 
Of course. Our focus was on providing a consolidated and social shopping experience. 
 
Are you allowing image search/bar code search? 
Search is an important component in shopping. We’ll support text and voice search at launch and eventually scale to several others. As we go on we’ll scan big data dumps to analyze the most discussed products of each category to help in product discovery. 
 
The commission model has been the primary way of monetization for most comparison-based websites. Is that the only one you’re looking at? 
We’re starting out with a commission-based revenue structure. However we’re open to relevant product listing ads and premium placements. 
 
Are you potentially looking at designing a web version? 
Of course. we want to be where the consumers are. In fact larger screens might have inherent limitations, but they offer larger screen estate.
