We used to go in groups of three or four and in the end we would make around three or four thousand rupees (from one trip in the forest). Now we make double the amount per kilogram and overall,” says Naskar. Last year, they produced 34 tonnes of honey and managed to pay ₹10,000 monthly to every person involved. This year, they are planning to scale up. We distributed the profits equally among all the beekeepers,” says Samanta. Like Bonphool, Sundarini Naturals is another cooperative organisation that works with the honey collector community. What started with the procurement and selling of two to three tonnes of honey in 2015 has increased now to eight tonnes in 2020. In 2021, the sales target is 10 tonnes. In these years, the number of farmers has also increased from 50 to 214. “Earlier, we used to pay the farmers ₹150 -160. But now we pay them ₹250 per kg at the time of procurement. For such a production of ten tonnes, our cost is over ₹20 lakh. For this, we have taken a loan from the state cooperative bank,” says Sima Das, procurement officer, Sundarini Naturals. But a better payment procedure is still a challenge. “We pay the farmers in their bank [accounts] every ten days and now all of them have accounts. But there is a problem. As these farmers are from deep interiors of the Sundarban area, they find it difficult to collect their money. If there are [more] kiosk-type banks set up in the Sundarban area, then the farmers can collect their money easily,” says Das. There is often a question about higher pricing of this honey. A kilogram of organic Sundarini honey is sold for ₹900 and 490 gm of Bonphool honey is sold at ₹560. The difference in colour depends on the kind of flowers involved, but normally it is of caramel colour. Some [are] a little red and some a little blackish. It is comparatively less thick. Because this honey is multi-floral and there is practically no use of antibiotics or pesticides in Sundarbans, moreover the bees are also of the wild variety, the taste and nutrition of this honey is very different from others,” he says. Both Samanta and Chakraborty point out that there are plenty of takers of this honey in other parts of India now. Chakraborty sees plenty of opportunity for the brand to grow if the government can project it in the right way. “It would be [a] big boost to the business if the government promotes the distinct qualities of the Sundarban honey,” says Chakraborty. Das wants to reach out to the government for a two-pronged help for the business. For the company, she needs capital and infrastructure help. “We would like to request the government for some working capital to procure (more) honey because it is seasonal. And as a small organisation, this kind of help in the form of some grant can help us a lot as the money needs to be invested for the entire year. We would also need some support to establish a honey processing plant,” says Das. For the collectors, she wants forest permits and smooth insurance schemes. “We would like to request the government for forest permits. Only a few farmers get such permits. If more farmers get permits, they will be benefited. The honey collectors stay in the fringe areas of the forests,” she says. As of now, all three, Sundarini, Dhenki and Bonphool use their websites to sell their honey. Bonphool is also available on ecommerce portals like Amazon. “We use Amazon in a big way. Biologist Carlos Ruiz has spent a quarter-century working to save <keyword id="9359280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="golden-lion-tamarins">golden lion tamarins</keyword>, the charismatic long-maned monkeys native to Brazil's Atlantic Forest. Thanks to painstaking reforestation efforts, the population of these endangered monkeys was steadily growing until an outbreak of yellow fever hit Brazil in 2018, wiping out a third of the tamarins. Undeterred, Ruiz's team devised an ambitious new experiment: This spring, they would start vaccinating many of the remaining wild monkeys. Enter the coronavirus, which is now hampering critical work to protect threatened species and habitats worldwide. First, members of Ruiz's team exposed to the virus had to be quarantined. Then the government closed national parks and protected areas to both the public and researchers in mid-April, effectively barring scientists from the reserves where tamarins live. "We are worried about missing the window of opportunity to save the species," said Ruiz, the president of the nonprofit Golden Lion Tamarin Association. "We hope that we ... can still do our work before a second wave of yellow fever hits." While the scientists follow government guidelines, they know that people intent on illegally exploiting the rainforests are still entering the parks, because several motion-activated research cameras have been smashed. Around the world, government resources diverted to pandemic efforts have opened opportunities for illegal land clearing and poaching. Lockdowns also have derailed the eco-tourism that funds many environmental projects, from South America's rainforests to Africa's savannahs. "Scientists and conservationists have faced interruptions from big global disasters before, like an earthquake or a coup in one country," said Duke University ecologist Stuart Pimm, founder of the nonprofit Saving Nature. "But I can't think of another time when almost every country on the planet has faced the impacts of the same big disaster at once." In Guatemala, indigenous communities that monitor rainforests are struggling to contain one of the worst fire seasons in two decades, as government firefighting resources are devoted to the pandemic. "Ninety-nine percent of these fires are started by people, and it's mostly done deliberately to open space for illegal cattle ranching," said Erick Cuellar, deputy director of an alliance of community organizations within Guatemala's Maya Biosphere Reserve called Asociacion de Comunidades Forestales de Peten. Indigenous people are stepping up as volunteer firefighters, but they are now doubly strained: Closed borders have shriveled their income from sustainably harvested forest exports, such as palm fronds sold for flower arrangements. "Tropical forests are rich in biodiversity, so we're losing rare flora and fauna," said Jeremy Radachowsky, director for Mesoamerica at the nonprofit Wildlife Conservation Society. "The situation is different in every country, but reduced enforcement of environmental laws is a common concern." In Nepal, forest-related crimes like illegal logging have more than doubled since lockdowns began, including in five parks with endangered <keyword id="409609" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengal-tigers">Bengal tigers</keyword>, according to the government and World Wildlife Fund. In many African countries, <keyword id="607682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="wildlife-tourism">wildlife tourism</keyword> provides significant income to maintain parks where vulnerable species such as elephants, lions, rhinos and giraffes live. But after the coronavirus struck, "the entire international tourism sector basically closed down overnight in March," said Peter Fearnhead, the CEO of nonprofit African Parks, which manages 17 national parks and protected areas in 11 countries. "We saw that $7.5 million was suddenly wiped off our income statement for the year," he said, adding that ecotourism next year may recover to only about half of previous levels. While keeping up essential maintenance and ranger patrols to dissuade potential poachers, Fearnhead's team is cutting travel costs by holding meetings over Zoom and also reaching out to potential international donors. "A protected area that is not being actively managed will be lost," he said. Jennifer Goetz, co-founder of a web site that provides information about ethical travel packages, said many safari operators in Africa hope to sustain some revenue and are urging clients to reschedule their bookings. In a poll of operators on the Your African Safari site, nearly two-thirds said the majority of their bookings had been postponed, not cancelled. Tropical biologist Patricia Wright notes that conservation isn't work that can be simply dropped for a while and then picked up again "because it depends so much on relationships with people and local communities." A quick look at the Blinkit (Grofers) site shows that their services aren’t available in Agra, Ahmedabad, Panipat, Rohtak, Allahabad, Durgapur (West Bengal), and Vadodara. These are some of the cities where the erstwhile Grofers had <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/grofers-founder-criticised-for-10-minute-grocery-delivery-his-reply-11630160621963.html">launched deliveries in 2019</a>. “ The remaining 18 cities were the ones where the company still offers its regular one day delivery. “The Blinkit service will now be available in only the areas where we are able to arrive at users location within 10 minutes (or less),” founder and chief executive (CEO) <keyword id="2744778" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Albinder-Dhindsa" source="Orion">Albinder Dhindsa</keyword> announced on Twitter. "In 1973, there were just nine tiger reserves which have now increased to 50. It is important to know that none of these reserves are of poor quality. He added, “Despite India's constraint of 2.5% of global land, 4% of rainfall and 16 % of world's human population, India is home to 8% of world's biodiversity, which includes 70% of the world's tiger population.” Currently, the tiger population within the reserves is 1,923 (65 percent of the total tiger population of India), the report said. The 'Status of Tigers, Co-predators and Prey in India report for 2018' showed that out of the 50 tiger reserves in the country, three reserves - Mizoram's Dampa reserve, West Bengal's Buxa reserve and Jharkhand's Palamau reserve - have no tigers left. According to the population estimation of tigers in reserves for 2018-19, Corbett has 231 tigers, followed by Nagarhole and Bandipore reserves in Karnataka with 127 and 126 tigers respectively, reported PTI. India is ready to work with other tiger range countries According to Javadekar, India is ready to take a leadership role and work with all tiger range countries for the management of the reserves and the conservation of the big cat. There are currently 13 tiger range countries — India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam. According to the report, in the state-wise distribution of tigers, Madhya Pradesh was found with maximum tigers at 526 followed by Karnataka at 524 and 442 in Uttarakhand. Last year Prime Minister Narendra Modi had released the four-yearly tiger census report according to which the tiger population in the country had grown from 1,400 in 2014 to 2,967 in 2019.
