On repayment, we have asked them to discontinue the rating which has now been done. Fitch withdraws Lodha's rating

Mumbai, Mar 27 () Appreciating the massive liquidity infusion with a slew of measures that the RBI announced earlier in the day, the national exporters body has called for specific steps for the industry since it being the worst hit."While the moratorium on all loans repayments for three months and 75 bps cut in interest rates would help exporters as well, the export sector has been the worst hit by the Coronavirus pandemic and would thus need bigger relief."The moratorium on loan repayments should be extended at least to 6-12 months for exporters since the global economy is set to be slipping into a recession," EEPC chairman Ravi Sehgal said in a statement.He said it will be a long haul for exports to resume as almost the entire world is under lockdowns. "Moreover, it takes years to develop and nurture exports markets and once the supply chain is broken, for whatever reasons, resumption is always challenging," he added. Sehgal also said exporters are also dealing with double whammy of export controls and import stoppages, bringing their operations to a virtual halt. BEN BALBAL

Exporters call for one-year repayment moratorium

Mumbai, Mar 27 () Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) has signed an agreement with the central government to provide an official development assistance (ODA) loan of 39,928 million yen (around Rs 2,480 crore) for Mumbai Metro Line 3.The ODA loan agreement was signed between the finance ministry and Katsuo Matsumoto, the chief representative of Jica in India.Matsumoto said, "Given the population of Mumbai, there is an essential need for the metro project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Mass rapid transport systems also help in reducing pollution caused by private vehicles and improving living conditions".With a total of 33.7 km, entailing 26 stations, the Line 3 or the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz line is planned to connect southern part of the city with the major activity areas like Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the airport, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation area and Seepz area.The fully underground project is scheduled for completion by 2021.Overall, Jica has so far extended concessional ODA loans worth over 1 trillion yen (around Rs 60,000 crore) for the development of metro systems in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Mumbai metro line 3 gets Rs 2,480 cr Jica loan

Mumbai, Mar 29 () Indian Oil Corporation has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh if any of the personnel from its distributor team dies due to Covid-19 infection."As the threat of the Covid pandemic is applicable to all key personnel of distributors, it has been decided that, as a one-time special measure, in case of their death from Covid infection, an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh will be paid to the spouse of such personnel of the distributor," according to a circular from Sunil Mathur, the executive director in-charge of LPG distribution and marketing, to his counterparts in all the states.In case, the spouse is not there, then payment is to be made to the next kin of the deceased, the circular added.The circular dated March 28 also lists the LPG personnel at risk from the virus as show-room staff, godown-keepers, mechanics and delivery boys employed by the distributors.These personnel are also required to attend duty during this crisis period to maintain uninterrupted LPG cylinder supplies across the country to all Indane customers, says the circular, a copy of which is with .It further said all LPG heads are responsible to maintain a database of certified list of all the mentioned personnel at each distributorship on its rolls as of March 25."This is only a gesture of goodwill in recognition of the services rendered by the said personnel in this trying time to serve the customers and fellow citizens," it noted. Mumbai, Mar 29 () Largest commodities bourse MCX is offering up to 3x more salaries to select few employees, who are working from office in the city.MCX, which dominates the commodities exchange space by a wide margin, employs around 400 people across the country and 300 of them are based in the headquarters here."Since last Friday, 50 of our key employees have been working from the office. The office had made all the provisions, including their daily needs and stay in the exchange building itself."And to reward them monetarily for the risk they are taking, the management has decided to pay them at least double the salary to them. In some cases this may go up to 3 times," a senior exchange official told , who also claimed that MCX is the only exchange to do so.The nomination and remuneration committee of the bourse has approved a new reward/compensation programme for employees working in the office in the wake of the Covid pandemic to boost their morale and incentivise their productivity, the official added.Under this programme, employees working in the office for a minimum of one week and continuing to work thereafter without a break will get a gross salary compensation for each week of work in the ratio of 1, 1.5 and 3 times in addition to their regular salary.Other support staff on contract employment will also be adequately compensated directly by the exchange, the official explained.Critical staff comprising four categories from all the departments have been identified from MCX &amp; MCXCCL for Mumbai and Gandhinagar offices for activation of the contingency plan.Employees are working in non-critical functions from home on a rotational basis from mid-March onwards. Practo inks pact with Thyrocare to conduct Covid tests

Mumbai, Apr 24 () A consumer research among urban Indians has found a near-allout support for the COVID lockdown, with 98 per cent of those polled saying the shuttering has been effective in controlling the spread of the deadly virus.But a large number of those polled in the top 16 cities are worried about the economic fallout of the more than a month-long lockdown on their incomes and jobs.The overall perception on the crisis recovery is 'good' on health front and 'poor' on the economic front, said a report by market research firm TRA Research, which is into consumer insights and brand analytics.While 73 per cent of those polled trust the government's ability to combat the crisis, the same for the government's economic ability to fight the battle is only 63 per cent, showing that the fears of a long-term financial and economic impact are prominent in the minds of the people, the report said.The survey conducted across 16 cities from April 10 to 22, among over 900 people, delves into their perceptions, attitudes, worries, fears and expectations.According to the report, overall 91 per cent feel that the lockdown is effective, while 98 per cent of those polled in five cities feel its effectiveness is excellent. However, as much as 74 per cent feel the overall implementation of the lockdown across cities is lower.On the findings of the survey, N Chandramouli, chief executive of TRA Research said the survey shows big gaps in information and knowledge about the COVID transmission, especially in two age-brackets -- 21-24 years and 46-50 years. The same information gap is seen across cities, barring Mumbai.It is most important that parents take cognizance of the fact that children are going through extremely traumatic conditions during the lockdown, and need to take time and effort to explain and guide their kids through with empathy and love, Chandramouli said.The highest concern for families across the cities is the fear about contract the disease (74 per cent), followed by job/business loss (68 per cent), and delayed salary (62 per cent). While Lucknow has the highest number of worried families at 85 per cent, followed by Nagpur at 81 per cent. BEN BALBAL

Urban India gives Covid lockdown a thumbs-up

Mumbai, Apr 17 () The foreign exchange reserves gained by a healthy USD 1.815 billion to USD 476.475 billion for the week to April 10, as per the latest weekly data from the Reserve Bank released on Friday.The forex reserves had declined by USD 902 million to USD 474.660 billion in the week to April 3, due to the fall in foreign currency assets. In the week before, the reserves had surged by USD 5.65 billion to USD 475.561 billion.On a year-on-year basis, the forex reserves had rallied by a whopping USD 61.6 billion as of April 10, according to the RBI data. During FY21 also, the foreign exchange reserves have risen by almost USD 62 billion.The reserves had touched an all-time high of USD 487.23 billion in the week to March 6, after it rose by USD 5.69 billion. Since then the reserves had been falling as the rupee was on free-fall. In the second week of March it has fallen the steepest - a whopping USD 11.9 billion as the RBI was forced to defend the rupee.For the reporting week, the foreign currency assets, which form the major chunk of the reserves, gained by USD 1.222 billion to USD 440.338 billion, which on a year-on-year basis has jumped by USD 53.576 billion.In the previous week ending April 3, the same had declined USD 547 million to USD 439.116 billion.Expressed in dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and yen held in the foreign exchange reserves.As against a decline of USD 340 million to USD 30.550 billion in the previous week, the gold reserves rose to USD 31.136 billon, up by USD 586 million on a weekly basis and on an annualised level it had gained USD 7.832 billion.The special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which has risen by USD 5 million to USD 1.427 billion, fell USD 4 million to USD 1.424 billion, marking a net decline of USD 35 million annualised.The country's reserve position with the IMF, which dipped USD 19 million to USD 3.566 billion in the previous week, gained by USD 11 million to USD 3.578 billion on a weekly basis and gained by USD 216 million annualised. New Delhi, May 4 () Poynter Institute's International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) on Monday launched a WhatsApp chatbot that has been built to address the challenge of misinformation, particularly during COVID-19 pandemic.By using the IFCN's bot on WhatsApp, citizens from all over the world will be able to easily check whether a piece of content about COVID-19 has already been rated as false by professional fact-checkers, a statement said.Initially, the IFCN's bot - which is free to use - will be available only in English, but other languages, including Hindi, Spanish and Portuguese, will follow soon, it added."Billions of users rely on WhatsApp to stay in touch with their friends and families every month. Since bad actors use every single platform to disseminate falsehoods, to mislead others during such troubling times, fact-checkers' work is more important than ever," IFCN Director Baybars Orsek said.The IFCN's bot has been built to address the challenge of misinformation, particularly during COVID-19 pandemic, by connecting people with independent fact-checkers in more than 70 countries and also with the largest database of debunked falsehoods related to the new coronavirus, the statement said.Since January, more than 80 fact-checking organisations from 74 countries have identified more than 4,000 hoaxes related to novel coronavirus. The information has been compiled in the CoronaVirusFacts database and is updated daily by IFCN, so that chatbot users can navigate and easily access its content.The system is capable of identifying the user's country via the person's mobile country code and then providing them with their closest fact-checking organisations. Mumbai, Apr 16 () The radical behavioural changes that Covid-19 pandemic has forced on people as well as organisations following the lockdowns are here to stay for long-term, and will impact consumption patterns for a host of goods and services, according to a report. The most visible changes are in the media and information space that has seen massive adoption of digital format, said the report by domestic arm of the French advertising powerhouse Publicis Groupe.The findings of the report mark the "profound shifts in the wake of the Covid lockdowns and the resultant changes in the way consumer react and many of these behavioural changes are not transient but are likely to stay longer," the report noted.Titled 'Reboot to a new normal', the study highlights the changes on the consumption patterns when it comes to media usage, purchase behaviour and overall marketing and brand trends following the outbreak and resultant lockdown enforced by the government between March 24 and April 15, which has since been extended up to May 3.Moreover, the study examines the impact of the changing consumer on businesses, consumer sentiment and their behaviour towards brands and the response of the brands to these changes.According to Anupriya Acharya, the head of Publicis Groupe India &amp; South Asia, the impact of the pandemic has meant that uncertainty has become the norm for brands and businesses across sectors and geographies."Most certainly, only the ones who imbibe this change, and more importantly, lead it, will emerge stronger. Covid-forced behavioural changes to stay for long: Report

Mumbai, Mar 30 () Union Bank may look at exiting Andhra Bank's life insurance venture post amalgamation of the two lenders, according to a senior official.A final decision will be taken by the board of the merged bank, based on the valuation and also meeting the regulatory guidelines, Union Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Rajkiran Rai G has said.Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank will get amalgamated into Union Bank on April 1, making it the fifth largest public sector bank in the country.The merger is part of the government's mega consolidation plan to amalgamate 10 state-owned banks to create four global size lenders, beginning next financial year.Following the merger, all investments of Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank will come under Union Bank as a combined entity.Andhra Bank has a life insurance joint venture -- India First Life Insurance -- wherein it owns 30 per cent equity. The other partners -- Bank of Baroda and Carmel Point Investments, owned by Warburg Pincus, own 44 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively, in the insurer.Andhra Bank had made an attempt earlier to sell its stake in the life insurance company but it did not yield any result."The board of the merged bank will decide on exiting India First, based on valuation and according to the regulatory (Irdai) guidelines," Rai told in an interview.Union Bank also has a life insurance venture -- Star Union Dai-ichi Life -- with a 25.10 per cent equity, along with Bank of India and Dai-ichi Life Holdings of Japan."Both these insurance ventures are doing very well. Looking at SBI Life and others, I feel valuations of insurance companies are only going to improve going forward. So, exiting at the right time, with the right valuation is very important," Rai said.Besides, Andhra Bank has a banking subsidiary in Malaysia -- India International Bank Malaysia. It holds a 25 per cent stake in the bank and the balance is owned by Bank of Baroda and Indian Overseas Bank."We may look at existing the Malaysian banking subsidiary as well if there is a good valuation," Rai said, adding that the board will take a decision at an appropriate time.The amalgamated bank, however, will continue with Corp Bank Securities, the wholly-owned brokerage of Corporation Bank, he said."We were also planning to enter the brokerage business. But when this amalgamation was announced, and when we looked at this subsidiary of Corporation Bank, we shelved our plans. We will fully leverage its capabilities now," Rai said.Apart from providing broking services to institutional clients, Corp Bank Securities also distributes mutual funds and trade in government bonds, certificate of deposits, treasury bills, commercial papers and investment in fixed deposits.In FY19, it earned an income of Rs 9.73 crore and a profit after tax of Rs 7.68 crore.There are three other mergers of public sector banks under the mega consolidation plan.Punjab National Bank will takeover Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India to form the nation's second largest lender; Canara Bank will integrate Syndicate Bank with itself, and Allahabad Bank will be merged into Indian Bank.Following the consolidation, there will be seven large public sector banks, and five smaller ones. There were as many as 27 state-run banks in 2017 when the SBI took over five of its associates and Bharatiya Mahila Bank.In 2019, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank got merged with Bank of Baroda, making it the third largest state-run bank. Mumbai, Apr 12 () The global economy is likely to face more financial pains as the dollar swap cost has spiked to historic levels, reflecting the increased need for currency hedging by governments, corporates and investors outside the US, warns a paper by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, which has brought the world to a standstill, the dollar premium has started shooting over the roof, forcing the US Federal Reserve to open forex swap lines with at least five central banks on March 15. Governments across the world are looking to raise funds in efforts to fight against the pandemic, that has killed more than 1 lakh people besides infecting millions in different parts of the world. The paper by the Switzerland-headquartered BIS, often described as the central bank for central banks, noted that dollar funding cost in foreign exchange markets has risen sharply, reflecting demand and supply factors following the pandemic and the currency hedging needs of corporates and portfolio investors outside the US.Over The Counter (OTC) derivatives data available with the BIS shows that outstanding global debt at the end of June 2019 stood close to USD 86 trillion, with forex swaps accounting for an estimated three-quarters of the total amount. Not surprisingly, the dollar is almost always one of the two currencies exchanged (89 per cent) and three-quarters of it are under-one-year maturity. Nearly 89 per cent of the USD 86-trillion global debt pile is denominated in the greenback, which means any increase in the dollar swap premium will have an equal amount of additional interest burden on governments, corporations and other borrowers, as per the paper. There can be more financial pains for the global economy as the dollar swap premium spikes, heavily burdening those nations beyond the US Fed Reserve's dollar-swap lines, it said. The US Federal Reserve opened forex swap lines with the European Central Bank, Bank of Japan, Bank of England, Swiss National Bank and the Bank of Canada on March 15, bringing down the massive premium to some extent. Still, broader policy challenges remain to ensure that dollar funding markets remain resilient and that central bank liquidity is channelled beyond the banking system. "Since the onset of the pandemic, dollar funding cost in forex markets have risen sharply, approaching levels last seen during the 2008 crisis. "One such measure is the forex swap basis, which is the difference between the dollar interest rate in the money market and the implied dollar interest rate from the forex swap market where someone borrows dollars by pledging another currency as collateral," the paper said. A negative forex swap basis means borrowing dollars through the swaps is more expensive than borrowing in the dollar money market, the paper said, adding that in normal times, the swap basis is close to zero, as an arbitrageur can exploit the basis and supply dollars in the swap market to pocket the difference. "A large negative basis reflects a scarcity of dollar funding," it said. This pre-agreed exchange rate is called the 'forward rate', and defines an implicit interest rate on the dollar relative to that in euros given the current spot exchange rate and converts domestic currency into dollars, thereby gaining access to dollar funding on a currency-hedged basis. The widening of the swap basis has been evident especially at short maturities. The three-month basis has widened to as much as –144 bps for the yen, –85 bps for the euro, –107 bps for the Swiss franc and –62 bps for the pound. Three-month forex swap basis against the dollar calculated exploiting the covered interest parity condition as the spread between three-month dollar Libor and three-month forex swap implied US dollar rates, the paper said. Hedging at USD2 trillion of the USD 86 trillion of debt into dollar portfolio would require rolling USD960 billion in dollar swaps every three months, or USD320 billion every month. But supply of hedging by global banks has fluctuated with the risk capacity of financial intermediaries, the paper noted. BEN RAM BALBAL

Mumbai, Mar 29 () National oil marketing companies have come out on Sunday allaying the fears of consumers about product shortages, saying there is absolutely no shortage of any fuel, especially cooking gas, which is being supplied to customers at their doorsteps.On average, the daily supply of cooking gas has gone up by at least 35-40 per cent since the lockdown, in spite of working with minimal staff, the companies said.The collective assurance of uninterrupted supplies of all oil products, especially LPG cylinders, by Indian Oil, BPCL and HPCL, come amidst panic booking of cooking gas by consumers since the national lockdown imposed to contain the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.This, coupled with staff shortage, has led to some delays in the initial days of the lockdown but now it has been normalised, they added.Talking to in Mumbai on Sunday, Mukesh Kumar Surana, the chairman and managing director of the ONGC-run Hindustan Petroleum said, there is absolutely no room for consumers to worry about LPG shortages at all."I assure all public that there is no shortage of any oil products at all. All the more let me assure that there is absolutely no shortage of LPG at all. In fact, our LPG plants are working at over capacity to meet any spike in demand. I request all not to engage in panic booking of cooking gas," Surana said.Explaining how HPCL has augmented LPG supplies, he said at the national level the daily supply has gone from 12 lakh cylinders to 15 lakh a day for his company.In Mumbai, HPCL has supplied 56 per cent more cylinders on Saturday, from 34,000 to 51,000, while in Pune the spike in supplies is 54 per cent, he added.Surana also said, HPCL has equipped all its delivery boys with masks, sanitisers and also trained them in social distancing. Accordingly, they have been asked not to carry cylinders to individual homes but to the society gates as there are restrictions on entry for outsiders at many societies."Unfortunately, we had many instances of cylinders being returned from many societies in the city which is a logistical problem as wastage of resources, who are anyways are in very short supply," Surana rued.Similarly, the second largest player, BPCL said its daily LPG supplies in Maharashtra has gone up by 32 per cent, while the same is up 40 per cent in Mumbai and 37 per cent each in Navi Mumbai and Thane, a BPCL spokesman told .In an interview to earlier in the day in New Delhi, the IOC chairman said there is absolutely no need to worry about any shortage of fuel items."We have mapped demand for all fuel for entire April and beyond. We have refineries operating at levels enough to meet all of the demand. Besides all bulk storage points, LPG distributorships and petrol pumps are functioning normally.
