Bellatrix was founded in 2015 by Rohan M Ganapathy and Yashas Karanam — is in the business of manufacturing satellite launch vehicles and propulsion systems. It co-exists with other spacetech companies like Agnikul, Dhruva Space and Pixxel. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Space taxis as a B2B offering" comment="subhead" text="Space taxis as a B2B offering">Space taxis as a B2B offering</cmsannotation> The company plans to use this funding to expand its commercialization efforts by the end of 2022 with the launch of space taxis, Bellatrix’s chief executive officer Rohan M Ganapathy told Business Insider. “The technologies being developed for use in space have the potential to offer many opportunities for the chemical industry, for example in new materials and for innovative application cases of chemistry on earth and in orbit. In India in particular, this industry is currently experiencing an unprecedented upturn," said Markus Solibieda, MD of BASF Venture Capital GmbH. Space taxis would be a business-to-business offering, which will allow the company to launch multiple micro-satellites into space on behalf of its clients using one Orbital Transfer Vehicle. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Size does matter" comment="subhead" text="Size does matter">Size does matter</cmsannotation> Ganapathy explained that the size of satellites have been reducing, while the size of rockets or space launch vehicles has remained consistent. Launching small satellites on this big rocket is expensive and it underutilizes the space available. This has brought opportunities for several big spacetech companies to develop small launch vehicles, but it is again an expensive process. “It is again like a chartered flight, it is still expensive,” he noted. “What we want to do is, look at the underutilized capacity of the larger rocket, whose launch frequency is expected to increase. The initial version of the Space Taxi, called the Pushpak, can carry satellites up to 600 kg. “We see the space industry is growing exponentially, and Bellatrix’s products will play a major part in democratizing access to the space industry with their cost-effective and power-efficient thruster systems, ideal for small satellite manufacturers,” said Venkat Vallabhaneni, managing partner at Inflexor Ventures. The company also tested a green propulsion system last month. Spacecraft propulsion is any method used to accelerate spacecraft and artificial satellites. The company plans to hire 40 more employees across both technology and business verticals, Karanam added. While the company will be looking to hire tech talent from India, the business talent would be hired all across the globe. This startup which makes satellite launches cheaper and faster raises funds to start commercial operations

<ul><li>After investing in space technology startup <keyword id="2578058" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bellatrix">Bellatrix</keyword>, <keyword id="9902884" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Inflexor-Ventures">Inflexor Ventures</keyword> co-founder Venkat Vallabhaneni now has his eye on telecom and remote sensing startups.</li><li>In an interview with Business Insider, Vallabhaneni highlights how the fund is now looking to invest in startups that go beyond the 'core' space industry.</li><li>According to him, softer sectors is where next set of intellectual property (IP)-heavy startups will emerge.</li></ul><keyword id="11341870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-technology-startups">Space technology startups</keyword> have become a hot commodity ever since the Indian government opened up the sector to private players last year. Inflexor Ventures co-founders, Jatin Desai and Venkat Vallabhaneni, threw their hat in the ring well before 2020, with Bellatrix — a startup developing satellite propulsion systems. Vallabhaneni, a postgraduate from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), believes that softer sectors like telecommunications and remote sensing can be taken to the ‘next level’. And that’s where the fund will focus next. “Many startups will come with services around satellite use. That’s where we would be focused on as well — beyond the core industry, what are the auxiliary areas where the startups will come in. The company plans to deploy at least 60-70% of its fund size in the next two-three years. “We plan to fund a total of six to eight startups in a financial year,” said Vallabhaneni. This is, however, spread out across different categories of technology startups — not just space technology. But space technology is where Vallabhaneni believes the most money is to be made. “Space [sector] has got nonlinear kinds of dividends, so the growth is non-linear as well… I’m pretty optimistic about the space sector,” he said. Simply put, space startups have a better shot at hitting hyper growth and bringing in revenue than other startups in other sectors. While things like human spaceflight may sound fancier, they are not likely to be a focus for Inflexor Ventures from the India point of view. <div type="ExtQuote" text="“Telecom sector focused on satellite communications. The industries around that, whether it’s telecommunications, services, ground equipment, that build around the ‘core’ space industry — that’s what is very very exciting,” Vallabhaneni told Business Insider. Demand for data isn’t just about casual users like you and me being online. Services like autonomous cars, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality need huge amounts of bandwidth to function as they find new use cases. Global financial firm <a href="https://www.morganstanley.com/ideas/investing-in-space">Morgan Stanley</a> believes that the most significant short and medium term opportunities will come from satellite broadband internet access. It makes up for 50% of the projected growth of the global space economy by 2040 — set to hit $1 trillion. Another report by <a href="https://www.nsr.com/new-nsr-report-projects-1-trillion-in-cumulative-revenue-for-global-space-satellite-markets/">Northern Sky Research</a> highlights that connectivity-focused use cases dominate the revenue opportunities in the global space economy. “If there can be improvements in IP creation, around that area, how telecom services around satellites can be taken to the next level, that will be a very very interesting area,” said Vallabhaneni. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Inflexor Ventures is ‘waiting and watching’" comment="subhead" text="Inflexor Ventures is ‘waiting and watching’">Inflexor Ventures is ‘waiting and watching’</cmsannotation> “You can’t just look at the current year,” said Vallabhaneni. Allied space technology sectors may not have as long a gestation requirement as ‘core’ sectors, but things like IP-creation and the high financial cost are high barriers to entry. Aside from Bellatrix, the fund is not looking to invest in other ‘core’ space technology startups in the short term. After Bellatrix, Inflexor Ventures will be looking to invest in startups creating IPs around satellite services

This could mean that space projects could potentially get cheaper for Indian startups, according to India’s Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>. “A lot of startups and individuals have spent time developing space-related technologies. Unfortunately because of Indian regulations, they have been unable to use ISRO’s available facilities for even testing their products,” she said. The big boost for startups According to DataLabs by <a href="https://inc42.com/datalab/to-infinity-and-beyond-indias-space-technology-startups-are-starting-to-blow-their-thrusters/">Inc42</a>, there are about 120 active startups working in the space sector right now. And, most of them emerged in or after 2014. As of 2019, their cumulative funding stood at $6.2 million. This includes some big names like Bellatrix, Dhruva Space, and Team Indus. Other’s like Kawa Space is even providing space-as-a-service — a change in real estate models from asset ownership to monetisation of access and services that include physical space. Reforms announced include levelling the playing field for private companies in satellites, launches and space-based services by introducing predictable policy and regulator environment to private players. “We want them to co-travellers with us, which is why the private sector is being encouraged,” Sitharaman explained. Private sector players will now be allowed to use ISRO facilities and other relevant assets to improve their capacities. In addition, future projects for planetary exploration, outer space travel will be open to the private sector. ISRO treasure trove of data Startups will also now have access to the treasure trove of data with ISRO as geospatial data policies become liberalised to provide remote-sensing data to tech-entrepreneurs. “There’s a lot of geospatial data in India for Indians, particularly for startups looking to do irrigation work, drought-prone area development work, groundwater work — they don’t most often get the data within India. They get from abroad, paying through their nose for the good work that they do for India itself,” she said. However, the government will only be doing so with a lot of caution balancing the sensitivity of the sector against the advantage that’s at stake for Indian startups who are also doing pioneering work. The agency’s budget is expected to increase by 35%, not only bolstering its own capabilities, but also facilitating the private sector. “We expect a steady increase in ISRO budget which can help even private sector players like SOIL in the longer run,” said ICICI Securities on its outlook for 2020. A budget, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indian-government-approves-10-billion-budget-for-two-of-its-space-programs/articleshow/64492363.cms">hit ₹10 billion</a> in 2018. ISRO budget has a multiplier effect on the economy where the benefits of working on rockets and satellites spill over to the private sector.  Companies like Walchandnagar Industries, Godrej Space and L&amp;T are already working with ISRO to manufacture rocket sub-systems. And, many more are just waiting on the sidelines to come into the fold. Shifting towards the private sector In the future, ISRO disclosed plans of moving the entire development of its Polar Satellite Vehicle Launchers (PSLVs) to the private sector. “We will be fully supporting this activity; we will invest and create this capability,” <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/science/isro-ready-to-support-private-rocket-launching-companies/article29331986.ece#">S Somnath</a>, director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center told reporters. And, since ISRO has shown an interest in private participation — the industry has responded in kind, A Rajarajan, Director of the Satish Dhawan Space Center told <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/private-firms-keen-on-working-with-isro-for-manufacturing-rockets-official-119121601306_1.html">Business Standard</a>. This is not just for manufacturing different parts of a rocket which are then assembled at ISRO — but also for high energy material, like propellants, high explosives and others. Over the next 6 to 9 years, ISRO — along with its revamped commercial arm <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/union-budget-2019-isros-new-commerical-arm-is-new-space-india-limited/articleshow/70086097.cms">New Space India Limited</a> — has planned 15,000 launches.  ISRO isn’t the only one looking to edge into the satellite launch market which is — expected to grow to a $30 billion by 2026. Start-ups also want a piece of the pie. Companies like Agnikul Cosmos, Skyroot, and Bellatrix are already attempting to build small rockets. The potential of the <keyword id="7803428" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Space-Activities-Bill">Space Activities Bill</keyword> Private companies can’t actually launch a satellite into space until the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-space-activities-bill-addresses-damage-in-outer-space/articleshow/69960212.cms">Space Activities Bill</a> becomes a law. The pending piece of legislation would allow India’s private sector to participate in the satellite launch market. It would regulate all ‘<a href="http://prsindia.org/sites/default/files/bill_files/Draft%20Space%20Activities%20Bill%202017.pdf">commercial space activity</a>’ — any space activity which generates or is capable of generating revenue or profit — with licenses. Since licenses act as a barrier to entry into the market, the bill has been <a href="https://www.orfonline.org/expert-speak/the-space-activities-bill-does-it-deliver-50019/">criticized</a> for not clarifying the eligibility criteria to apply for such a licence and how long it would take to process one. It is yet to be tabled in Parliament and has to be passed through both houses before it becomes a law.
