I send my last Slack messages for the evening, fire off a few emails, and shut my laptop with a false sense of finality as if I don't have to return to my desk in sixteen short hours.I make the short trek from my at-home office to the couch, where I grab the remote and settle in for yet another night of "Real Housewives" viewing. Before I know it, four hours have passed. My eyes are heavy, and it's time for bed. So long, Tuesday.That's how it goes on Wednesday and Thursday, too. Maybe I'll grab drinks with friends on Friday or switch out reality TV for the newest Netflix movie come Monday, but generally speaking, I spend most of my adult life eating, sleeping, working, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/no-free-time-adam-alter-2017-5">scrolling to the ambient sounds of the telly</a>. It's a far cry from the schedule I kept as a teenager, sprinting from play rehearsal to swim practice and still finding time for homework and socializing in between.It's true that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-are-burned-out-because-overwork-is-celebrated-says-author-2022-1">Americans are overworked</a>, overstressed, and generally awful at unplugging from work, two time-use researchers told Business Insider.But that only tells half the story.Americans, on average, have between four to six hours of leisure time every day, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/atus.nr0.htm">the American Time Use Survey</a>, which measures the amount of time people spend doing various activities. People have to choose an activity freely and have control over the time they spend doing it.That's why, for much of human history, leisure time was out of reach for the masses, restricted to those with the social standing and status to engage in it — namely, rich men."It used to be that having discretionary time and being able to engage in leisure activity was a mark you were of a high social class," said Liana Sayer, director of the University of Maryland's Time Use Lab. "If you could do what you wanted with your time, it meant other people were providing the necessities of life for you."That changed with industrialization, Sayer said. But the idea that those who have more money also have more time is one that still holds true today. People who work steady, 9-to-5 jobs with predictable schedules are much more likely to find extra time in their day, Sayer said. Gig workers and hourly employees, on the other hand, are increasingly reliant on multiple jobs and unpredictable schedules.Despite class differences, 95% of Americans over the age of 15 engaged in some kind of leisure activity on a typical day, according to the 2022 time-use survey. The leisure category encompasses pastimes like socializing, exercising, and reading for pleasure.But the vast majority of Americans' leisure time is spent — you guessed it — in front of the television. Watching TV is the most popular leisure activity, accounting for an average of 2.8 hours a day — more than half of all Americans' leisure time.Much has been made about America's co-dependant relationship with the tube. (Some influential time researchers have argued Americans' social skills started to decline when air conditioning and television became commonplace, allowing people to remain both comfortable and entertained without leaving their homes, Sayer said.) But whether the small screen rots our brains or helps us relax, the act of watching TV is often an inherently anti-social one, researchers said.It's easy to flip on the TV after a busy day at work because it requires almost no planning and very little brain engagement. Partaking in an out-of-the-house activity or making plans with other people, meanwhile, takes organization and coordination.Our reliance on TV is part of a larger trend that has seen Americans engage less and less with other people and pro-social institutions like church or volunteer groups, Sayers said, adding that this is a pre-pandemic pattern. There's some evidence that men are starting to step up their contributions post-pandemic, according to Sayer. However, much of women's "free" time is still dedicated to household duties and parenting."Most women don't feel like they deserve leisure time," Schulte said. "They feel like they have to earn it."That mindset is not unique to American women and dates as far back as biblical times, researchers said. Women have long been transforming their leisure time into productive activities, from starting sewing circles to socializing at the watering hole, Schulte said.But Americans' toxic relationship with leisure isn't gender-specific. A valorization of "hard work" was built into the very founding of our country, Schulte said. As a result, Americans have an intrinsic desire to be busy; we take it as a point of pride to overwork ourselves and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hobbies-death-side-hustles-remote-work-job-market-economic-precarity-2023-7">cultivate little societal respect for hobbies and recreation.</a> And Americans have been getting busier and busier over the course of the last few decades, increasingly to the detriment of their civic and social life, Schulte said."A lot of that panic and anxiety can be tied back to the '70s and '80s and the dismantling of the social safety net," she added.When it comes to prioritizing leisure time, America could take some cues from its European friends. Norwegians average more than six hours of leisure time each day. At the same time, the Belgians and Greeks pursue relaxation and hobbies for more than five-and-a-half hours each day on average, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?DataSetCode=TIME_USE">time use data</a> from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The US ranked 21 in global leisure time.But America today lacks much of the infrastructure that would allow people to fully embrace and prioritize their leisure time, researchers said. People can't take the time to learn a new skill or truly unwind without robust maternity leave, affordable childcare, a better work-life balance, and dependable healthcare in place, Schulte said.European countries far outrank the US when it comes to social spending. In 2019, France spent nearly a third of its gross domestic product on services related to health, family, unemployment, housing, and other benefits, according to OECD data compiled by the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/02/social-spending-highest-lowest-country-comparison-oecd-france-economics-politics-welfare/">World Economic Forum</a>. Finland, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Spain, Japan, and the UK all dedicated 20% or more of their spending to social services, while the US ranked ninth with 18.7%."A lot needs to change big-picture with policymakers and business leaders," Schulte said of the US. "But people can't wait until then to pick up a new hobby."Most adults struggle to remember what they even liked to do as a kid, which is one of the reasons TV has become the national default leisure activity. With a small strip of sand to spread your towel on, the small cove is protected by a reef, so it's swimmable and suitable for beginner surfers, even during winter. Keep a lookout here — I often notice turtles wading by. <h3>The best hikes to avoid crowds</h3>Make time for hikes during your trip to Oahu so that you can take in magnificent views only accessible on foot. Oahu has a majestic landscape of ridges, craters, waterfalls, and more that are worth significant time on your itinerary, no matter your skill level. <div type="image" title="Grass-covered cliffs and blue ocean with bright blue sky" height="2847" width="3797" msid="91770132" hostid="261"></div>The Pillbox TrailIn Kailua, <a href="https://www.alltrails.com/trail/hawaii/oahu/kaiwa-ridge-lanikai-pillbox-trail?u=i" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">the Pillbox Trail</a> is a somewhat steep but short ridge hike that provides a stunning view of Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands (what we call the Mokes) from former military bunkers. Not only is it less crowded, but watching the sunrise above the horizon is so memorable; a camera can't do it justice. The moderately challenging hike takes about two hours, but the reward is multiple waterfalls and water pools for swimming. During the first year of the pandemic, when options to go out were slim, I spent most of my time here wandering past mossy stones, bamboo forests, and tranquil streams.Keep in mind that many hikes on Oahu start in residential neighborhoods, so I ask that you be respectful and quiet. I also rarely hike without sunscreen, water, and snacks, and take any trash with me when I leave. If the weather is rainy, don't venture out, the mud gets slippery. Safety first!<h3>Must-visit historical attractions</h3>One reason I always recommend Oahu for first-time visitors to Hawaii is because of the important cultural and historical sites. A basic pair of skis, poles, and boots cost around $40 a day — more if you want a demo or advanced set. Snow pants, a ski jacket, and goggles can be hundreds of dollars each, but last multiple seasons. The biggest splurge is chair lift tickets. If you're a frequent skier, the best bang for your buck is a season pass. The <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/guide/epic-ski-pass/">Epic Pass cost $783</a> (down from $979 last year) and allows access to over a dozen mountains partnered with Vail Resorts around the world.If one person in your group has an Epic Pass, you can get discounted day tickets as a guest or "buddy." At Okemo, this brought my ticket down from $130 to $99 a day. "Going to buy a lift ticket at the window is kind of like going to the airport and buying a ticket for that day," Adrienne Isaac, the director of marketing and communications for the National Ski Areas Association, told <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/02/why-is-skiing-so-expensive-its-not-if-you-plan-right.html">New York Magazine</a>.But unless you plan in advance and do your research, the ticket-window may appear as the only option for many Americans.<h2>2. For folks without that option, journeying away from the local mountain is tough to schedule. Time is of the essence once you're on the slopes as well, as highlighted in viral videos showing incredibly long lift lines (which we thankfully did not experience). It's a surreal experience to be in the water with these creatures, who are the largest sharks in the world, as well as the biggest fish in the sea.Their <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/species/whale-shark" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">huge mouths are not dangerous</a>, as these sharks don't have any sharp teeth, nor do they care one bit that you're in the water with them. You can join in the fun by taking a special cruise designed to transport you to the spots whale sharks love, run by the <a href="https://www.cortezclub.com/whale-sharks/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Cortez Club La Paz</a>, <a href="https://www.bajaadventureco.com/whale-shark/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Baja Adventures</a>, and other adventure-tour operators in the region. My whale-shark experiences have been similar with both of those companies. There are big-money tournaments, too, as anglers from all over the world gather to vie for bragging rights. Depending on the time of year, you'll find marlin, tuna, grouper, snapper, and more. Fishing trips can be single-day adventures or longer live-aboard experiences. I've found that going out for a single day is really an exhilarating adventure, and I quickly learned that fishing for larger fish is definitely a workout. When we returned to the docks in the Cabo marina, the hungry sea lions who crawled right onto the back of our boat to beg for fish were an added bonus. They're hilarious and know they'll get fed by the boat captains — just make sure they don't climb aboard and steal your prize catch. Most sportfishing boats will clean your fish for you, and then you can take your catch to many local eateries in both Cabo and La Paz where the chef will fix it up for you in a delicious meal. Snakes on the golf course? Check. Coyotes or condors? I've seen them all in Baja California Sur while on the course, especially snakes and coyotes early in the morning. Baja California Sur has some of North America's best golf courses, including the Tiger Woods-designed<a href="https://golfdiamante.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored"> Diamante golf</a> course in Cabo San Lucas and the Gary Player-created <a href="https://elcortesgolf.com/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Puerto Cortés Golf Club</a> in La Paz. Many of these desert courses are juxtaposed against the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean or the Sea of Cortez, offering beautiful vistas and challenging holes. Lessons are readily available at every course for those in need of help with their short or long games, and I recommend playing early in the morning, as temperatures will heat up as the day progresses, no matter what time of year it is.<div type="image" title="turtle beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico" height="3886" width="5181" msid="92524500" hostid="261" sizebytes="1809170"></div>Watch baby sea turtles hatchOne of my favorite eco-adventures in Los Cabos happens from September to December, when baby sea turtles hatch at Pedregal Beach and head toward the sea. Perhaps it's because it reminds me of my father (who was a herpetologist) and his love for reptiles (turtles on land or sea are not amphibians, as you might have thought, but hard-shelled reptiles), or perhaps it's just because it's so fantastic to see these tiny creatures begin their lives. This sea adventure by proxy is supervised by scientific experts, which allows visitors and local volunteers to help release the babies on their perilous journey into the water. I recommend booking with the Cabo Turtle Hatchery and <a href="http://www.cabotrek.com">Cabo Trek</a>, which make sure the baby turtles are as protected as possible and that we, as helpers, do not do anything invasive to interrupt their hatching. <div type="image" title="Playa El Chileno in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico" height="4000" width="5333" msid="92524501" hostid="261" sizebytes="2042540"></div>The beach adventure, Cabo styleA final thought on adventure in Los Cabos is to be aware that many of the waters near beaches in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are very dangerous, even for experienced swimmers. That's why so many resorts do not allow swimming at their properties, as it's far too easy for guests to get injured or even drown because of the jagged rocks and rip currents along much of the Tourist Corridor. So be sure to pay attention to the flags posted on the beaches, as red flags mean do not get in the water — and they mean it. As mentioned in the hotel section of this guide, select hotels like the Montage Los Cabos and the One&amp;Only Palmilla do have swimmable private beaches, but most do not. Here are some of the public beaches in Los Cabos where swimming (and snorkeling) is safe for both adults and children.<ol><li>Medano Beach: This long public beach is in downtown Cabo San Lucas and often the most crowded around, as locals as well as tourists from hotels without swimmable water come here. You'll find bathroom facilities, lifeguards, and people selling everything from tamales and tacos to jewelry, sarongs, and locally made art pieces.</li><li>Lovers Beach: This small public beach near El Arco in Cabo San Lucas is accessible only by boat and swimmable only when the tides are out. While it's a little sliver of a beach that appears only at low tide, I recommend visiting because it is such a picturesque place. </li><li>Playa Acapulquito: This small, sunny beach near San José del Cabo can sometimes get very crowded with locals and tourists alike. It's a great place to catch some waves, and you can rent surfboards nearby. Families like this beach, as kids of varying ages can find fun things to do here, from surfing and boogie boarding for tweens and teens and just playing in the sand for the younger set. <div type="image" title="Cannery beaches in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico" height="4000" width="5333" msid="92524502" hostid="261" sizebytes="2164964"></div></li><li>Cannery Beaches: These two small public beaches are near the Cabo San Lucas marina and get very crowded on warm days. They're easy to get to and offer good snorkeling, but on a hot day, they are overrun with people, so be warned. Shade from the large rocks that frame the beach make these places where families come for a chance to be in the sand but not in the sun.</li><li>Palmilla Beach: This is a large public beach near San José del Cabo, not far from the One&amp;Only Resort, but it does not have any restaurants nearby, so bring along a cooler with water and snacks. You can try to snorkel here, but the water is often choppy, so visibility isn't good, but it's fine for swimming. This beach isn't so great for families with small children, as the water can be hard to handle. Many vendors come and set up to sell cool drinks and typical beach wares, like towels, sarongs, and sunscreen.</li><li>Chileno Beach: This less-crowded beach is well north of Cabo San Lucas' center on the Tourist Corridor. It has restrooms, lifeguards, and good snorkeling. Some parts of this beach have more dangerous waters, so be sure to swim in the designated green-flagged areas. Like most beaches on the peninsula, the sand is fine and the sun is relentless, so be sure to bring an umbrella and plenty of water when coming to this less-popular spot. <div type="image" title="Cabo Pulmo in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico" height="4000" width="5333" msid="92524503" hostid="261" sizebytes="1053886"></div></li><li>Cabo Pulmo Beach: This uncrowded beach with great snorkeling is in the state park two hours north of Cabo San Lucas, past San José del Cabo. It's very clean with beautiful sand, but there are no restaurants or other amenities here, so pack what you need ahead of visiting.</li><li>Balandra Beach: Baja California Sur's most famous beach, it is north of La Paz on a calm lagoon and accessible by car, bus, or boat. Often called Mexico's "most beautiful beach," it really is a perfectly picturesque place. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are usually available for rental here, and the lagoon is perfect for either of those activities. Transporting that futon from the car, up the building steps and into your dorm room – that will be tough. Leaving the comfort of home and family for a campus full of strangers in what is likely your biggest life milestone so far – that won't be easy. Taking Harvard University's Math 55 class, deemed on the school website as, "probably the most difficult undergraduate math class in the country" – that may be a bit of a challenge for those who sign up.
But being healthy in <keyword id="6360288" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="college">college</keyword>? That doesn't have to be so difficult. You can do it; here's your guide.
Build relationships. College is a whole lot easier (and more fun) with an on-campus support network. Here's how to build it:
<ul>
<li>Before you even pack the car, find five people to be in your "corner" – like your trainers in the boxing ring, says Harlan Cohen, best-selling author of "The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College." Dig around the college website or ask alumni, and scout out professors, advisers, resident assistants, tutors, orientation leaders or staff of an academic resource center who you can count on. "Those people are already there for you," Cohen says.</li>
<li>Make friends by doing what you love, Cohen suggests. Passionate about painting? Sign up for an art class. Reigning debate team MVP in high school? Join the college debate team. Chances are, you'll meet people who share the same interests.</li>
<li>Someone who may (or may not) become a friend is your roommate, should you choose to have one. Eat healthy. Even with late-night pizza places and limitless soda refills in the dining halls, you can eat wisely in college. Here's your plan:

<li>Befriend your dining hall, not because many of them have endless supplies of soft serve, but because just as many offer salad bars, vegetarian options and fresh fruit. Take advantage of these healthy choices by filling your plate with colorful, nutrient-dense foods.</li>
<li>There are many reasons why the plea to "drink responsibly" is worth repeating, including the fact that, you know, alcohol is illegal for folks under 21 and can be unsafe if abused. For those of any age who choose to imbibe, calories are at stake, too. Keep healthy snacks nearby to avoid that 2 a.m. drunk call to Jimmy John's, and remember that calories from alcohol alone add up quickly. Work out. The freshman 15 is not inevitable. Make these healthy exercise choices:

<li>Forgo that ride to class or cross-campus bus and walk as much as you can. Walking is perfect for gym-wary students looking for low-intensity, practical workouts. Bonus: You can learn a lot about the campus layout as you trek from building to building.</li>
<li>You're more likely to make time for exercise if others hold you accountable, so look into intramural sports or recreational clubs. These opportunities help you continue activities you love and learn new ones. Plus, you may make a few friends in the process. No club for the sport or activity you're interested in? Find others who feel the same way via message boards and flyers and make your own club.</li>
<li>When the weather is unforgiving or your schedule is too packed, you may need to squeeze in a dorm-room workout. Look into exercises with resistance bands and stability balls, both of which are available at most major retailers.</li>
</ul>
Manage stress. The exercises above will help you deal with stress, which is an inevitable part of college. The activities below will help you reduce stress, too:
<ul>
<li>Meditate by simply walking at a slow to medium pace and focusing intently on your feet – your toe touching the ground, your foot landing flat on the ground and your toe pointing back upward. When your attention drifts (and it will), gently bring it back to your feet. The skill you're honing – of noticing when your mind wanders and bringing it back into focus – may be handy when you find yourself daydreaming in class.</li>
<li>There are likely many ways to sneak in some downward dog between classes. Check if your school's recreation center offers yoga classes or if you can even take a yoga course for academic credit. There are also many <a href="http://health.usnews.com/health-news/health-wellness/slideshows/5-people-who-are-changing-the-face-of-yoga">online yoga resources</a> available, as well as DVDs and books.</li>
<li>If you don't want to go the active route for stress management and need to slow down – way down – try this <a href="http://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/eat-run/2013/07/22/8-quick-relaxation-techniques">breathing exercise from Eat + Run blogger Keri Glassman</a>: Breathe in, and count to eight in your head. Hold your breath for two heart beats, and then slowly exhale for eight counts.</li>

Sleep well. Concentrating in class is tough when you're running on fumes. Too little sleep can not only zap brain power, but it can also affect your mood, happiness and food choices. Shoot to get at least seven hours of sleep each night by practicing proper sleep hygiene:

<li>Try to use your bed for just sleeping. If you're studying, watching TV, scrolling through Facebook and occasionally dining in bed, you'll have a harder time falling asleep when you want to. It may be hard to avoid using your bed for multiple purposes when it takes up much of a small dorm room, but this is all the more reason to explore other campus hangouts such as student centers, libraries and coffee shops.</li>
<li>Unplug. Falling asleep is not easy when you're <a href="http://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/eat-run/2013/02/04/want-to-sleep-better-unplug-first">still wired at bedtime</a>. Try turning off all electronics an hour before hitting the hay.</li>
<li>It's a no-brainer that you're more likely to fall asleep in a dark, quiet environment. What's not so obvious is how to pull this off with night owl roommates. Four words: Ear plugs. Eye mask.</li>

<li>Sleeping in eye makeup is a major beauty foul that can leave you trudging to your 8 a.m. class with red, irritated eyes thanks to a allergic reaction, contact irritation or infection. Remove eye makeup with about a quarter teaspoon of baby wash mixed with warm water.</li>
<li>If the daily grind is wreaking havoc on your pores, try mixing finely crushed almonds with a teaspoon of honey and some oatmeal to create a granular scrub. If you're prone to oily skin, add a few drops of lemon juice.</li>
