<keyword id="6400882" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TVF">TVF</keyword> is on a roll. With their Pitchers series and ‘Tu Beer Hai *ahem ahem*’ getting accolades across the country, they’ve recently launched the 2nd Season of Permanent Roommates. 
 For the uninitiated, <keyword id="2997521" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TVF-Pitchers">TVF Pitchers</keyword> is about four friends, Naveen Bansal (Naveen), Jitendra Maheshwari (Jitu), Yogendra Kumar (Yogi), and Saurabh Mandal (Mandal) launching their own start-up. 
 
The series revolves around how these four friends rediscover what they really want from life and the challenges they face to get their off the ground. 
 Business Insider India spoke to <keyword id="1362593" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arunabh-Kumar">Arunabh Kumar</keyword>, the CEO of The Viral Fever on how it all started. 
 
How did you stumble upon this idea? 
I wrote TVF Pitches back in July 2012. The idea back then was to write a startup comedy. 
 
It took us 3 years, but it couldn’t have been timed better. 2015 is when the startup boom happened, and we decided to tell an aspirational story rather than give it a comic treatment. That’s how it started, the rest is history. 
 
What was the core idea? 
For startups it’s always about pitching. The idea was to have a series on Pitchers - people who pitch till the evening and sit over a pitcher in the evening.People say Bangalore’s a copy of Silicon Valley. They couldn’t be more mistaken. 
 
What was your research like? 
I passed out of IIT Kharagpur in 2006, and 2008 was when a lot of this started. I remember meeting Abhishek, a friend who had invested in Flipkart, a company that sold second hand books. Me and Golu met a couple of startups in Bangalore. There were friends in IIT Bombay. 
 We wanted to keep it very real. That’s why we also got <keyword id="192201" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kunal-Shah">Kunal Shah</keyword> and <keyword id="219793" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kunal-Bahl">Kunal Bahl</keyword> to feature in it. 
 
What has the reaction been so far? 
‘Tu Beer hai’ has become the new startup phrase. One couldn’t have asked for more.The series has gone on to become the 22nd best show globally. Many more will discover it with the upcoming 2nd season. 
 
Next Season? When’s that? 
By the end of the year. 
 
Will you consider a TV Series like On Air with <keyword id="1875393" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="AIB">AIB</keyword>? 
We’re in talks with several networks, but that’s a different art form altogether. They’re (AIB) the best guys to do it. We generally work on fiction. 
 
What triggered the standup comedy boom in India? 
The credit goes to people like Rivaldo and AIB. That way people have started laughing, and developed a sense of humor. 
 
Creators have also realized it’s the easier thing to do over the tedious art direction and costume designing, writing and editing. 
 
If you write well and are a goof performer you can pick up a mike and get going! 
 
Do you think it was the tipping point of intolerance or the comic buildup that helped? 
I think it was a gradual buildup. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=AIB">AIB</a> Roast controversy was really the trigger. When you have idols to aim to it makes the job so much easier. It helps the ecosystem. It’s a welcome change. 
 
What’s your idea of the under 35 young and progressive Indian youth? 
They’re sensible, honest and want to watch quality entertainment. 
 
It’s more than the horniness, booze and profanity. The problem really is that the content generators know only these. The creators need to work really hard. The industry can’t be lazy and replicate tried-and-tested models. 
 
Your advice to a to-be YouTuber. 
Enjoy the process rather than the result. 
 
If you enjoy making videos you’ll end up becoming a film-maker . If you like the idea of being a film-maker, you’ll end up being no one.

The Man behind ‘Tu Beer Hai…’

Heineken, Anheuser-Busch InBev, and Carlsberg, world's top three brewers, together control about 90% of India's beer market. However, due to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/latest/liquor-ban-would-dent-state-governments-estimated-revenue-by-rs-50000-crore/articleshow/57985674.cms">sales bans</a>, shrinking store networks, and stagnant demand, these companies are forced to introduce about a dozen new beer brands in India, so that it can reverse the recent decline in sales. 
 
These new brands can help these brands with their business in India, which has promising demographics and increasing affluence towards their products.

Even though India's beer sales fell 2% in the year ending March 2017, these companies are expecting that it will expand 5-7% in the current fiscal, thanks to premium products they are offering. 
 
"We need to strengthen our portfolio because consumers want to choose, and we want to be a part of their choice. In the next six months, we will come up with two strong beer brands in the premium segment, and an interesting portfolio of imported brands in the next six weeks," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/small-business/companies/united-breweries-asks-vijay-mallya-to-step-down-from-board-over-a-sebi-order/articleshow/57054898.cms">United Breweries </a>MD Shekhar Ramamurthy told ET.

Heineken owns 43% of UB, which controls half of India's beer market with brands like Kingfisher, Kalyani Black Label, and Zingaro beers. 
 
UB will be bringing Desperados, a pale lager beer; Edelweiss, a wheat beer brand; Sol, a Mexican brand; and Dos Equis, a pale lager from Heineken's international portfolio to India. 
 
"Then some more are being developed in India in the premium segment to further strengthen our market leadership. Kingfisher will continue to be our lead brand," said Ramamurthy.

About a dozen new beer brands are coming to India

<ul><li>India is home to over 200 co-working spaces and their seats are filling out fast.</li><li>But their popularity is surging because they are more than just office rental spaces. </li><li>In India, co-working spaces had leased about 2.9 million square feet in area just between January-March 2019. </li></ul>Dhruv Mullick, a sports management professional who handles Mayank Agarwal, the Indian test cricketer, used to work out of a Starbucks in Bengaluru . But one day when he had to sign a confidential legal contract, he needed an office space. He walked into WeWork in Churchstreet, Bengaluru, signed up for a membership for half a month in December, 2018. Today, he runs a business out of there. American entrepreneur Carolyn Horner needed to do a beta testing for her app, all she had to do was look across the room, offer a free donut and in return get real-time validation for her product. Horner, the co-founder of Jenzy, an app that makes it easy for parents to find the right fit shoes for young children, could do all of this just by sitting at her desk at WeWork in Philadelphia. Mullick and Homer are among many <keyword id="53533" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="entrepreneurs">entrepreneurs</keyword> who have embraced co-working around the world for their many benefits, ranging from affordability to a chance to network to finding business deals. In India, co-working spaces have opened up in almost every other corner of big cities and are now also entering Tier 2 and 3 cities in India. They have found favour with entrepreneurs mainly for convenience, affordability, and a place to network and become a part of a community, without having to invest in real estate. With seat prices starting as low as ₹7,000 a month at some places, many of these places can be a steal for business owners. According to a report done by property consultant Knight Frank, as of 2018, there were about 200 co-working spaces in India, with the likes of WeWork, Regus, Awfis etc., being the most popular. Such has been the craze of co-working spaces in India, that WeWork which launched in the country in 2017, already contributes to ₹6,788 crore of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) across its centres in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Not just seat sharing But co-working spaces are evolving from being just seat sharing office spaces to a hub of mentorship from experienced professionals, giving entrepreneurs a chance to test their products before it goes live or just fall back on their peers when they are at a fix. Many co-working spaces also encourage networking events which also include beer-on-tap, creating a fun work environment, one which millennials love. And Amit Ramani, CEO of Awfis points it out – a millennial wants a break every hour and a half. “The fundamental question is if an office just has a meeting room and seats, where does that millennial go? The infrastructure with new age technology has even attracted corporates to co-working spaces - which offer activity-based settings,” Ramani told Business Insider. Infrastructure happens to be the key attraction of a <keyword id="2987257" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="co-working-space">co-working space</keyword>. Mishu Ahluwalia, Founder &amp; CEO, GoHive, a co-working space based out of Delhi NCR, believes that in a co-working environment a startup gets open access to a whole pool of networks which they can leverage for mentorship, vendor empanelment, recruiting and peer to peer learning. The model has worked so well that now co-working spaces are making money off offering services and building partnerships with corporates. “Co-working spaces now make focused efforts to give a bouquet of business services (including the likes of accounting, recruitment help, employee engagement, knowledge exchange, training) and on building value-added services, partner discounts and specific startup friendly rate charts to increase engagement within members and amidst people,” said Ahluwalia. Mullick, five months after he went into WeWork, has now set up his own firm – zlait Sports Bangalore LLP. “It was only because of the community which really motivated me to start up. You meet so many diverse professionals and get to bounce your ideas off them,” he told Business Insider. From beer-on-tap to testing an app for a donut, here’s how co-working spaces are bidding traditional offices goodbye

Recently, Bihar government had banned the sale of liquor in the state, in a bid to promote a healthy lifestyle. However, there is one state in India which is penalising bar-cum-restaurants for not selling enough liquor. 
 
Reportedly, the Karnataka government has started to impose fines under a now-defunct law that required such establishments to sell a minimum of 468 litres of liquor every month. 
 
Suddenly reminded of this law, the state excise department has started to slap fines worth crores of rupees, on over 150 bar-cum-restaurants in Bengaluru, with retrospective effect. Needless to say, over 30 premium establishments have even moved the High Court against the penalities. 
 
The notices were issued under Rule 14(2) of the Karnataka Excise (Sale of Indian and Foreign Liquors) Rules, 1968, which required CL-9 licence holders to sell a minimum of 52 cases or 468 litres of liquor - excluding fenny, wine and beer - every month, failing which they would be fined with Rs 100 for every litre of shortfall. 
 
Even though the rule was scrapped nearly two years ago, it is being cited for violations that happened in the past. The notices even threaten cancellation of liquor licences that these establishments hold if they don’t pay the fine before June. 
 
"Yes, the rule was quashed in August 2014, and there is no longer any prescribed quantity to be sold. But they have to pay a penalty for not serving 468 litres a month in the past. If they do not pay the penalty, we won't renew their licence," said Excise Commissioner SR Umashankar.

<ul><li>The Indian alcoholic beverages market is projected to grow at 11% per annum in value terms for the period between 2021 to 2025. </li><li>The alcohol and <keyword id="1453601" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="beverage-industry" source="Orion">beverage industry</keyword> in India is projected to cross 1200 million cases in volume by 2025. </li><li>India’s alcoholic beverages industry is having to deal with several obstacles – from tourists triggering pandemic scares to varying excise duties across the country. </li><li>Consumers are also switching from beer to whisky, rum, brandy and scotch on budgetary and health concerns. </li></ul>A growing spurt in post-pandemic social gatherings and socialising is seeing an uptick in food and beverages consumption, boosting <keyword id="13627872" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alcohol-sales-in-India" source="Orion">alcohol sales in India</keyword>. Consumers are also switching from beer to brown liquor like whisky, rum, brandy and scotch on budgetary and health concerns, industry experts say. “There has been a revenge buying going on in the market in the past 6 months. Many have shifted from beer to higher alcohol content products. Beer is comparatively more expensive as people tend to buy more of it due to less alcohol content,” said Ishwaraj Bhatia, COO of craft beer company <keyword id="138117" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="simba" source="Orion">Simba</keyword>, which witnessed a 35% growth post-pandemic. Indians have been getting out in droves to socialise in restaurants, clubs, pubs and bars – making up for all the lost social interactions after the Covid-19 pandemic’s forced isolation. Bangalore-based Ironhill, which claims to be the world’s largest microbrewery, clocked an overall sales in excess of ₹150 crore in 2022 alone. “The post pandemic era has been promising to us in many ways. Our sales have improved by steady dine-in footfalls across all our outlets. The consumption has been the highest in Bengaluru by a huge margin, followed by Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh and outlets in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh,” said <keyword id="12042815" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="teja-chekuri" source="Orion">Teja Chekuri</keyword>, Managing Partner of Ironhill India. Dine-in business of quick service restaurants or QSRs saw a strong growth in Q1FY2023 according to a <keyword id="87153" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bnp-paribas" source="Orion">BNP Paribas</keyword> sector report. That bodes well for <keyword id="25441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alcohol-consumption" source="Orion">alcohol consumption</keyword> too. According to a Mirae Asset QSR report 2022, pubs, clubs and bars comprise 27% of the sales share. Pubs and bars are expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.8% and 9.5% in FY25, Paribas said. Indian alcohol beverage market is the third largest market in the world after China and USA by volume. This market is projected to grow at 11% per annum in value terms in 2021-2025, while by volume it is projected to cross 1200 million cases by<a href="https://www.bseindia.com/corporates/download/380455/Sula%20Vineyards%20Limited%20-%20DRHP_20220719121719.pdf"> 2025</a>. Changing excise policies a challenge Even as the alcoholic beverages industry in India slowly gets back on the road to recovery, it is having to deal with several obstacles – from tourists triggering pandemic scares to varying excise duties across the country. Delhi, a major market for alcoholic beverages, recently changed its excise policy. From September 1, Delhi and Ghaziabad went back to their old excise policies, leaving private players in the lurch. Private players were offering one plus one free alcohol to sell the remaining stock before the old excise policy came back. “The old excise policy favoured the private players more than the government vendors. Label and registration fees have gone up 100 fold and marketing is restricted. For registering a label in Delhi, we have to pay ₹15 lakh per year. For us, Delhi has been very expensive from the beginning, “ said Simba’s Bhatia. The entrepreneurs in the industry say Tier 1 cities were facing hiccups getting back on track due to the high inflow of travellers post pandemic leading to Covid cases. The tier 2 and tier 3 cities were quicker to adapt. “It is more difficult to sell alcohol in India rather than abroad because every state is a different country with its own excise rules. We have a separate team just to monitor the rapid changes in excise rules across states in India. The southern region of India is especially difficult to tap into as it forms 40% of the beer sales,” said Bhatia. Despite these issues, the Indian alcoholic beverage industry is expecting to grow robustly in the next few years and are looking to expand. UK-based research agency <keyword id="14971974" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="iwsr-drinks" source="Orion">IWSR Drinks</keyword> market analysis says Indian spirits segments will grow 4.4% in the next five years while beer will grow 9.3%. “We have been pushing our franchise model quite aggressively and have already begun talks for outlets in Maharashtra, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan among other states. We plan to have at least 30 outlets across India in the next few years,” said Ironhill India’s Chekuri. If dating during the pandemic involved ‘roller skating’ or ‘grocery stores’, this year it evolved to ‘picnics’ ‘coffee dates’ and ‘stand-ups’. Hiking, movie night, a walk in the park, pairing up during festivals and board games were other popular forms of connection. Interestingly, going alcohol-free during dates also witnessed a spike in India. Over 25% of young singles surveyed said they drank less on dates compared with last year and 72% of members said on their Tinder profiles that they don’t drink or only drink occasionally. At Kannur the meeting was led by State Industries Minister E.P.Jayarajan and said the need of the hour is there need be no panic or fear as we are confident of able to keep things under check. Meanwhile the general advisory also came on Saturday that as a matter of abundant caution all those who arrive from abroad should remain in isolation for 28 days. And for the tipplers, there was a good news that while there has been decision to close down theatres, stadiums and to avoid large meetings, the excise department has decided they will not close down retail outlets that sell liquor and beer.

Vijay Mallya’s journey from a businessman to a fraudster

Vijay Mallya-led <keyword id="81868" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="United-Breweries">United Breweries</keyword> reported more than elevenfold rise in net profit to Rs 67.71 crore in the last quarter of FY2013-14. 
 
The company had reported a net profit of Rs 5.85 crore during the corresponding period of FY2012-13. 
 
For FY2013-14, the company reported a net profit of Rs 226.02 crore as compared to Rs 172.11 crore in the previous fiscal (2012-13). 
 
"The fourth quarter performance was in line with expectations and similar to that in the previous quarter," the company said. 
 
“The positive development in revenue has been partly driven by price increases and partly through optimisation of sales mix,” it added. 
 
The Bangalore-based firm, which markets various beer brands, including Kingfisher and Zingaro, said its board has approved to acquire assets of Pacific Spirits for Rs 105 crore. 
 
The brewery is located at Shahjahanpur in Rajasthan. The acquisition is subject to due diligence and securing necessary approvals, United Breweries added. 
 
"The parties are in the process of completing various formalities for issue of statutory licenses and permissions in the name of United Breweries Ltd. Upon receipt of necessary approvals and completion of due diligence, requisite documents for sale of brewery assets shall be registered," it said.

This new breed of startups, fuelled by liberal doses of funding, is basically designing a work culture that emphasizes on creative thinking and collaboration among different departments, which doesn’t happen on a daily basis. To do this, they provide a plethora of activities including health and wellness sessions, team outings, hobby classes, provisions for indoor games, movies, book clubs and much more. 
 
Suresh Bhagavatula, assistant professor of entrepreneurship at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore says, "I have a feeling it's a function of boom time. 
 
In a boom time there is a lot of exuberance and positive thoughts or energy around; then people may want to invest in all this. If there is a recession, all this will become much more serious—it's a reflection of what is out there in the economy."

Bhagavatula, personally, isn’t much convinced with the idea of workplace fun. Bringing in light the other side he says, "It needs to be studied in greater detail than to just say that cool culture leads to better work. There has not been much research done to see whether it is actually a distraction. I assume so at some point it will become." 
 
Recently, DogSpot, a four-year-old pet supply store, has allowed its employees to bring their pets along at work. As per the company’s co-founder Rana Atheya, “it helped fill gaps in inter-department communication.” 
 
For gaming company Junglee Games, one of its periodic poker nights led to the creation of a new variant of the popular three-card game 'teen-patti', called Royal Teen Patti, which has attracted almost 2 million users. 
 
Not just this, but LivSpace, a home design and decor platform held a 48-hour design hackathon that included beer and pizza in the office. The designers were presented 1,000 photographs and design software and "we asked them to create beautiful imagery," said co-founder and CEO, Anuj Srivastava. The company revamped its website with these images, and has been attracting at least 10,000 page visitors since June, from about 3,000 earlier. 
 
"Designers haven't worked in the crazy internet world. They come from partner-driven firms where the culture's different, where owners are God. They take calls from them and here we ask for ideas," said Srivastava 
 
Anand Lunia, founder of seed-stage venture fund IndiaQuotient and also an investor in DogSpot however says, "Startups have realised (that) in their world it's not the number of people but amount of efficiency and effectiveness of each employee (that matters). This needs an environment that is conducive. Ordinary people have to perform extraordinary tasks and have to go beyond their past results." 
 
Even so, investors, too, are beginning to ask entrepreneurs about how they plan to build their startup's work culture, although this is not a prerequisite to signing a cheque. "Smart, experienced investors understand that apart from numbers and metrics it's important to build an organisation, especially at a time where companies are growing fast," said Varun Khaitan, co-founder of UrbanClap, which is backed by SAIF Partners, Accel Partners and Snapdeal co-founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal. 
 
But the litmus test will be when the chips are down, said entrepreneur-turned-investor Ronnie Screwvala. "If you are 15 days late with salary, will it make a difference if you have a dart board in the office, are eating 'pani puri' on Wednesdays or going to the pub on Fridays? I don't think so," said Screwvala. 
 
"No one has gone through that right now, because they are still in their multiple funding rounds," he added.

What Millennials Hate And Love Most About Their Jobs

Man really had no takers for his cry for sympathy and some consideration as far as his ‘cries’ were concerned. 
 The drama that unfolded right at the stage of auctioning is a clear indicator that <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> seems to have kicked off to a good start. A melodramatic opening always promises more entertainment ahead. By now, bookies have acquired new cell phones to mint money, quite oblivious to the verdict that has sounded like a death knell to <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> chief N Srinivasan. Supreme Court has upheld the recommendation. The court also felt adequate punishment in the form of life ban was meted out to two players – <keyword id="13418" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="S-Sreesanth">S Sreesanth</keyword> and Ankit Chavan, five years of suspension to Amit Singh, and a year-long suspension to <keyword id="82630" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Siddharth-Trivedi">Siddharth Trivedi</keyword>.
