Yet, it appears that scenario has become quite common in India. As many as 181 pilots of scheduled and non-scheduled airline operators failed alcohol tests between 2015 and 2018, Economic Times <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/181-pilots-tested-positive-for-alcohol-during-2015-2018-aviation-min/articleshow/67075356.cms">reported</a>, citing India’s civil aviation ministry. Speaking about the number of such cases, where the test results showed ‘positive’, the Civil Aviation Minister Jayant Sinha said 43 pilots were found drunk in 2015 while the number of pilots who failed the test in 2016 stood at 44. There was certainly no drop in such cases in the next two years. In 2017 and 2018, the number of cases reported was 45 and 49 respectively. Delhi and Mumbai, which are also the prime cities to board flights in India, lead the list of cases where pilots have failed in alcohol test, reported India Today citing an RTI filed by an Indian media house. Both the cities have reported 18 cases each. The second in the list was Chennai followed by Bengaluru. Indian airlines have been struggling with unethical behaviour of pilots in India. India has seen 181 incidents of airline pilots failing alcohol tests in the past 3 years

This 16-year-old might not have a driving license yet, but she has a student flying permit by her name. This makes <keyword id="1118661" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Varija-Shah">Varija Shah</keyword> the youngest student in Gujarat to have a student <keyword id="624329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pilot-license">pilot license</keyword>. 
 
Earlier this week, she few Cessna 152 as co-pilot. It was special for her because the day coincided with her birthday. She was given the opportunity to take the pilot's seat and fly the aircraft. 
 
She says she was fascinated about flying planes since she was in seventh grade. 
 "My dad always dreamt of becoming a pilot and that's how I got fascinated with flying. My parents were supportive of my decision, so I joined <keyword id="370374" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-Flying-Club">Gujarat Flying Club</keyword> last year. It was a one-year course that included ground training, theory classes and flying plane on simulator," she told the Times of India in an interview. 
 
Shah is currently an eleventh grade student in Navrachana School. She aims to become a fighter pilot. 
 "I will get a private pilot licence, join <keyword id="6363208" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Cadet-Corps">National Cadet Corps</keyword> and then join the IAF," she says. 
 
Chief flight instructor at the Gujarat Flying Club, Group captain (retd), Charlie Weir says, "Varija is a smart and bright student. She will now have to fly regularly to get expertise in flying planes." 
 
Apart from flying, Varija is also a state and national-level tennis champion.

The RBI is on track by at least December to begin a pilot program for a central bank digital currency, or CBDC, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said in a pre-recorded Thursday <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/27/india-central-bank-rbi-digital-rupee-trials-could-begin-by-december.html">interview with CNBC.</a>"We are being extremely careful about it because it's completely a new product, not just for RBI, but globally," Das said. India could begin testing a digital currency in December, says the country's central bank chief

The US-based <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> has started testing longer subscription plans in the country, as it looks to woo new users in India where online video consumption has seen a massive growth in the past few years. According to sources, Netflix has started testing multiple months subscription plans (three, six and 12 months) that will be offered at a discounted price. However, this will be available only to some new users, and they may see different options, they added.
 The sources said the intent of the pilot is to see whether subscribers will be open to paying for several months, or a year in advance.
 Earlier this year, Netflix had piloted and then launched a mobile phone-only plan in the Indian market -- a first for the company globally. The new long-term plans being piloted are also India-first.
 When contacted, a Netflix spokesperson said, "We believe that our members may value the flexibility that comes from being able to pay for a few months at once. As always, this is a test and we will only introduce it more broadly if people find it useful."
 Currently, Netflix only offers monthly subscription plans across three price slabs of Rs 499, Rs 649 and Rs 799, respectively, apart from the Rs 199 mobile-only pack.
 Its competitors like Amazon Prime Videos, <keyword id="2739840" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotstar">Hotstar</keyword> and ZEE5 already offer annual subscription packs (Rs 999) which is cheaper than their monthly plans (ranges between Rs 99-299). A premium player Netflix started its operations in India in 2016 and has introduced a number of Indian shows on its platform.
 Last week, Netflix founder and Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings had said the company was focussed on creating original Indian content for audiences not just in India but also globally.
 "This year and next year, we spend about Rs 3,000 crore developing content and you will start to see a lot of stuff hit the screens. We got about 100 employees in Mumbai and a couple of thousand working on different productions. So, we are trying to become more Indian in content offering," Hastings had said.
 Globally, the company has over 158 million users. It does not provide country-specific numbers.
 There is a growing trend of consuming on-demand content services on television, a significant number of people watch content on smartphones. According to a FICCI-EY 2019 report, Indians spend 30 per cent of their phone time and over 70 per cent of their mobile data on entertainment.
 Online content consumption in India has seen massive growth with data plans becoming more affordable. Data rates in India are among the cheapest globally.

Netflix tests multi-month packs in India to woo new users

MUMBAI: In his latest visit to India, AirAsia founder Tony Fernandes pointed to an air hostess and announced the company will help her "realise her dream" of becoming a pilot. While, AirAsia India's fate in a turbulent sky of cut-throat competition is unknown, its quirky hiring has certainly caught the industry's attention. "It's true AirAsia has made some unusual choices," said Manish Sabharwal, chairman of staffing firm Teamlease Services. "This is something that AirAsia does globally too, and a different pair of eyes always makes things interesting," he added. Out-of-the-box appointments across the board have been integral to the AirAsia story, almost as much as its aggressive fares.

Yet, earlier last month over half of its flights were delayed. Reason? A large chunk of its <keyword id="55080" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cabin-crew" source="Orion">cabin crew</keyword> staff took a sick leave. There will be more such incidents in the coming months, experts say, as a new airline Akasa Airlines is all set to launch operations. Jet Airways too is making a comeback and even Tata Air India is getting ready for a revamp. All of them will face shortage of crew, leading them to poaching. There are around 17,000 registered pilots in India out of which over 2,500 are women. The industry needs much more. “India needs 10,000 more flight attendants, 6,000 more qualified pilots. Compared to past slowdown of 2010, 2012 or 2009 in the industry, this time it is going to be very hard for the airlines to sustain. To sustain growth one has to add aircrafts, fleets, need more pilots, flight attendants, engineers,” Mark Martin, founder and CEO of Martin Consulting told Business Insider in an interview. Experts also fear that this increase in demand for experienced pilots will push them to hire foreign pilots. Flying schools had closed during the Covid-19 pandemic for two years and there are a lot of pending licenses to be approved as well. It’s not just the pilots but there will be a shortage of experienced engineers, ground staff and other cabin crew that new airlines would love to have in their fold. This could be another reason why most of them could be swayed by better salaries and offers from the market. Praveen Paul, a Bengaluru based aviation consultant disagrees. He believes that employees would stick to bigger airlines which are better paymasters and will look for stability in addition to hikes. Indigo, he says, is one of the few airlines that pays its employees on-time, unlike most others. “I don’t see talent running to new airlines in a hurry. Indigo, Tata’s Air India will not lose any talent while SpiceJet, Go Air may lose as employees feel whatever happens they get their salaries on time at Air India and Indigo,” Paul told Business Insider India. Aviation sector jobs, while technical and necessary, have gone through many rounds of stress and strain in the last few years. After the debacle of Kingfisher employees who were never paid when it closed down in 2016, Jet Airways and its bankruptcy was also hard on the sector and its employees. However, now that there’s a turnaround, they would be in a better position to negotiate — that could be bad news for airlines who are already flying on wafer thin margins thanks to a massive increase in aviation turbine fuel prices. After techies, its aviation crew salaries that will be ‘up in the air’

In what is seen as a major standdown, the pilots' union of <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> has withdrawn its opposition to the new wage pact and employment agreement. In a joint letter issued on Thursday, the Indian Pilots' Guild (<keyword id="179256" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ipg" source="Orion">IPG</keyword>) and Indian Commercial Pilots' Association (ICPA) withdrew their stand and told their members that they are free to sign new wage contracts offered by the new <keyword id="6355725" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-group" source="Orion">Tata group</keyword> management of Air India. "As dedicated <keyword id="4746568" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="air-indians" source="Orion">Air Indians</keyword>, we believe it is crucial to express our readiness to settle the dispute at hand and find an amicable resolution for the benefit of both parties," the IPG and ICPA said in a joint letter to their members. The letter further read, "Over the past year, our attempts to reach a resolution have been hindered by a lack of cooperation from the management. Their unwillingness to address our concerns and apathetic attitude has resulted in a prolonged stalemate and escalating tensions." "Upon the assurances given in the online 'Townhall Meeting for Pilots' and in the interest of the aspirations of Air India, The <keyword id="8555" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata" source="Orion">Tata</keyword> Group and our passengers, the Joint Directive No.01 of 2023, Sub: Unilateral Changes in Policies stands withdrawn," the letter titled as 'Withdrawn of Joint Directive Np01 of 2023', added. The announcement came after a joint meeting held on Thursday, wherein the unions' members were told that they are free to sign the new wage contract. Last month, the Tata Group-owned airline announced a new salary structure for pilots and cabin crew but the staff was disappointed with the revisions. Their main grouse was about promoting captains with more than four years of experience in management. In a communication to all employees including pilots and crew members in April this year, Air India management had said that they announced the revision of their employment contracts and revised compensation for flying staff. "I am reaching directly to our flying staff through this platform as currently there is no recognized union at Air India. This is within the framework of law," said Air India Chief Human Resource Officer Suresh Tripathi, had said in a video message. The airline had said that the contract sent is a compilation of applicable policies and existing rules. Wherever there are differences, their changes are introduced to have a performance and merit-based culture as would be the ask of any world-class and professionally run airline. In the last one year, they have been hearing all the concerns of their flying community through various forums and constant communication, the Air India management said. "Guaranteed flying allowance has moved upwards from existing 20 hours to fixed 40 hours. With our ambitious growth and large aircraft order, we as an organisation are confident to provide you more and more opportunities for flying. The fact remains that at 70 hours of flying, income across the board has increased. We are a productivity-oriented organisation, and anyone who is ready to contribute will grow and prosper," the airline had said. "Our Trainers who would be investing more time in training as we ramp up, have been given a significant increase in pay in the form of both fixed and variable. There is more than 40 per cent increase in the allowance for trainers," it added. Air India said flying allowance rates are one of the highest in the Indian industry, with even higher amounts beyond 40 hours. There used to be a difference in flying rates in the same pilot rank which has been done away with to promote fairness. They have introduced additional compensation during training of command upgrade and conversion training which was not existing earlier. There was not any service reward existing to recognise the contribution of experienced staff. A fixed amount has been added to salaries. "These are all changes we have introduced for the better and to become market competitive, which was a key ask. We have also introduced best-in-class employee insurance and other benefits which were not existing earlier at Air India to support the welfare of our flying staff," the airline's management had said. Air India pilots' union withdraws opposition to new wage agreement

 <keyword id="1870652" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ayesha-Aziz">Ayesha Aziz</keyword> wanted to fly planes for as long as she can remember. When she got licensed as a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=pilot&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">pilot </a>at 16, that childhood dream suddenly became her reality. 
 Now 20, Aziz is India’s youngest female <keyword id="6356223" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pilot">pilot</keyword>. “I’ve always wanted to something challenging and unconventional all my life. I’m happy for being the country’s youngest female pilot, but I’m more proud for having achieved my childhood goal,” she says. 
 Her dream of becoming a pilot and her fondness for <keyword id="52392" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flying">flying</keyword> and airports took shape during the trips her family used to take from Mumbai to their native place,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=kashmir&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> Kashmir</a> while she was growing up.

“My brother who would be scared would always sleep during the flight while I would be giddy with excitement during take-off and landing,” she reminisces. 
 
Ayesha joined a flying school right after passing out of high school. She took ground lessons there and passed five viva sessions. She was awarded her student pilot license in November 2013. 
 
Currently she pilots single engine Cessna 152 and Cessna 172. 
 
Four years back, she was unable to start her training in commercial flying due to financial constraints. 
 Not one to let that demotivate her, Aziz is now in her third year pursuing B.Sc in <keyword id="31907" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aviation">Aviation</keyword> from the Bombay Flying Club, she will finally gain her commercial license once she completes 80 hours of the total 200 hours of flying.

According to her, her family is the reason behind all her sucesss. “When I told my father I wanted to be a pilot, he not only supported my decision but even pushed me into it right after I completed high school,” she adds.

The formal launch of Uber Shuttle, a bus service tailored for daily commuting needs, brings to fruition a pilot programme that was initially tested in Delhi-NCR and has been operational in Kolkata since last year under an MoU with the West Bengal government, as per the statement. Commuters will be able to pre-book seats up to a week in advance, track the live location and route of the bus, and view its expected time of arrival (ETA) -- all through the Uber app, it said. Each shuttle vehicle will be able to accommodate 19-50 passengers and will be operated by local fleet partners using Uber's technology.
