"Assuming 80% availability of registered allopathic doctors and around 5.65 lakh <keyword id="20522856" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AYUSH-doctors" source="keywords">AYUSH doctors</keyword>, the doctor-population ratio in the country is around 1:836 which is better than the WHO standard of 1:1000," Patel stated. She also said that there are 731 medical colleges in the country with an annual intake of 1,12,112 <keyword id="20585495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MBBS-seats" source="keywords">MBBS seats</keyword> as of now. Further, there are 72,627 <keyword id="22645227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PG-seats" source="keywords">PG seats</keyword> as of date, she said. Measures taken by the government to augment medical education facilities and to improve medical standards include <keyword id="22366985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centrally-Sponsored-Scheme" source="keywords">Centrally Sponsored Scheme</keyword> (CSS) for establishment of new medical colleges by upgrading district/referral hospitals, under which 157 new medical colleges have been approved and 109 are already functional. Under the CSS, medical colleges have been upgraded to increase the number of MBBS (UG) and PG seats. Support has been provided for an increase of 4,977 MBBS seats in 83 colleges with an approved cost of Rs 5,972.20 crore, 4,058 PG seats in phase-I in 72 colleges with an approved cost of Rs 1,498.43 crore and 4,000 PG seats in phase-II in 65 colleges with an approved cost of Rs 4,478.25 crore. Besides, under "upgradation of government medical colleges by construction of super specialty blocks" component of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), 75 projects have been approved, of which 66 projects are complete. Under the Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved and undergraduate courses have started in 19 of these. Also, DNB qualification has been recognised for appointment as teaching faculty, to take care of shortage of faculty and there has been enhancement of age limit for appointment, extension or re-employment against posts of teachers/dean/principal/ director in medical colleges up to 70 years. <h2>Claims of Indians being unfit "extrapolated" </h2>Furthermore, Union Health Minister J P Nadda told the Lok Sabha today that WHO's recent report stating that half of India's adult population is physically unfit relied on data collected only from three states and one UT, and the results were extrapolated through a modelling technique indicating inbuilt methodological issues. Responding to a question, Nadda said the WHO defines 'sufficient physical activity' as 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activities per week (brisk walk, lifting light load etc.) or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity per week (running, digging, construction work, outdoor games etc.). The activity level so quantified is based on a self-reported response to questions about physical activity lasting at least for 10 minutes. The National NCD Monitoring Survey of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) 2020 has assessed, inter alia, physical activity amongst Indian adults and found that 58.7% had conformed to the WHO recommendations, Nadda told the Lok Sabha.

Nearly 90 per cent of India's trade is seaborne, necessitating robust port infrastructure to manage increasing exports and bulk commodity imports, it added. Noting that India faces rising domestic energy demands and can look to sustainable technologies, including renewables and low-emission fuels, balancing energy security with its energy transition plans, the report stated that agriculture will rely on advanced technologies and new policies to improve infrastructure and productivity. The need is to address critical infrastructure issues such as irrigation, storage, and supply distribution to ensure food security and economic stability, it added. My peers labeled me as "the intelligent one," though I would say <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/performance-reviews-study-gender-race-impact-men-brilliant-women-overachievers-2022-6">chronic overachiever</a> was a more accurate description.But when I went off to college in the late 1980s, I found myself surrounded by many other brilliant minds and realized that maybe I wasn't so special. Unsupportive professors only magnified my self-doubt; I remember one who said girls learned slower than boys and another who suggested the girls sit in the back of the room because none of us were going to use our degrees.I lost faith in myself and let go of my dreams to be a doctor. I graduated with a degree in liberal arts and settled into a job at a coffee shop.When I met my first husband at 24, I clung to our relationship as my source of identity. He reassured me it was okay I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life and that he would take care of me. We got married at 26 under the pretense that we'd try for kids right away and I would <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-left-high-paying-job-stay-home-with-her-kids-2022-12">quit my job</a> to care for them.A challenging pregnancy had me in and out of the hospital and restricted to bed rest. My twin boys were born prematurely and required a year of isolation within the home. Shortly thereafter, one of my boys was diagnosed with autism and thus began the relentless hunt to find services for him. I loved having my babies at home, but the first two years of their lives were exhausting.By the time they hit four, my boys were healthy, meeting all their milestones, and getting ready to enter kindergarten. I was finally able to take a breath, and my career ambitions crept back in.<h2 id="d5668db0-100c-46da-bd1d-cb0d6497912e">I applied for a master's program without the money for it</h2>When I told my ex-husband about my desire to go <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-xer-why-going-back-school-50s-was-worth-it-2024-5">back to school</a>, he shut me down, saying we didn't have money for it and making disparaging remarks about my intelligence.Our conflicts continued and ultimately led to a divorce when our boys were five. I became their primary caretaker and took on dual jobs as a barista and receptionist to make ends meet.I was determined to continue my education so I applied for a master's program in special education. I figured I'd learn how to better accommodate my autistic son in a career that would allow me to work during school hours.But I didn't have a way to pay for it. I applied for several <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/student-loans/how-to-get-college-scholarship">scholarships and grants</a> through Portland State University, but I was still about $10K short on tuition.<h2 id="4663e2c9-49b4-447d-8ba6-8fa7f95e6326">My friend convinced me to audition for a game show</h2>I was hanging out at a friend's house and telling her about my financial woes when she joked about finding a part-time gig on Craigslist. We started sifting through sketchy job postings and laughing at the absurdity until my friend stumbled upon a local casting call for Singing Bee, a game show on Country Music Television.She knew I had a knack for memorization and I loved country music, so she begged me to audition. I wasn't sold on the idea until she told me about the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-jeopardy-contestants-spend-prize-money-crypto-holidays-pony-cars-2023-11">prize money</a>. Then, I was all in.That Thursday, she drove me to the local Marriott to join 700 other auditioners. We were ushered through rounds of auditions until the number of applicants was whittled down to 30, and then they sent us home.A few nights later, I got a call from a Singing Bee representative offering to fly me to Los Angeles the next morning to compete on the show. He promised free hotel accommodations and a minimum prize of $1000. I flew to LA and a few hours later found myself standing on a television sound stage with six other country music fanatics anxiously awaiting directions from the host. She was nailing every lyric, and I thought I was toast — but then she missed a word on a song and they told me if I could get it right, I'd <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/big-brother-interesting-things-you-never-knew-from-someone-on-show-2022">win the game</a>.I did. I was shocked as I was given a trophy and a check for $10,000 — exactly what I needed to fund the first semester of my master's degree.<h2 id="93cd017d-91ae-4444-8356-7aeca5879a21">I started doing research and dabbling in medicine</h2>I pursued the master's degree while still working service jobs, but my heart wasn't in teaching. My advisor helped me change my focus to research, and I was hired as a full-time researcher at my university's Autism Research Institute the day after I graduated.I began to work in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/travel-nurse-tripled-salary-pandemic-perks-downsides-job-2022-2">local hospitals</a> and lean into the biomedical aspect of autism studies while pursuing a master's in nutrition at Notre Dame of Maryland.By 2013, I had met my now-husband. I was so close to my childhood dream, but, I thought I was too old in my 40s to apply for medical school.<h2 id="2dd43906-a50f-4a23-9e62-97217b7f8e92">The pandemic made me realize it was time to help</h2>In 2020, I saw the devastation that the pandemic caused to our rural community which was already a medically underserved area. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7723130/">physician suicide rate</a> was skyrocketing and healthcare workers were overworked and exhausted. I remember telling my husband that I could sit here and be angry about what was going on or I could be a part of the solution. I threw all my self-doubt aside and knew it was time to go back to school.At 50 years old, I enrolled in Pacific Northwest University's medical school. I would be lying if I said I wasn't terrified, but I have my husband, beautiful boys, and parents to thank for being my biggest cheerleaders. The Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed the hospital and two <keyword id="20000183" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="doctors" source="keywords">doctors</keyword> to pay Padmavathi, a resident of Jayanagar, Rs 50,000 as litigation expenses. It has also directed <keyword id="22497673" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-India-Assurance-Co-Ltd" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="New India Assurance Co Ltd" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="New India Assurance Co Ltd">New India Assurance Co Ltd</keyword>, which had issued a policy covering the hospital expenses, to pay her Rs five lakh for "the professional and <keyword id="21130249" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medical-negligence" source="keywords">medical negligence</keyword> caused." The then 32-year-old woman underwent the surgery on September 29, 2004 at the <keyword id="22497672" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deepak-Hospital" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Deepak Hospital" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Deepak Hospital">Deepak Hospital</keyword>, with the two doctors allegedly performing the hernia operation. On completion of the surgery, her appendix was also removed, according to the Commission's order last month. Immediately, on the next day, she complained of severe pain for which she was prescribed some pain killers and assured that it is post surgery discomfort and that it will get cured. She suffered acute stomach and back pain for several years and was also admitted in the same hospital twice later, the order noted. Padmavathi later approached another private hospital here in 2010 and during a scan, it was noticed that some foreign body existed in the abdominal and back portion of her body and it was suggested to her to get it (surgical needle) removed. She then underwent surgery and the 3.2 cm surgical needle was removed following which she approached the consumer forum with a complaint the following year. The forum noted that the complainant was aged about 32 years, when she underwent all these surgeries and removal of the surgical needle. "Definitely she suffered severe pain and inconvenience till removal of the surgical needle," the order stated. Hence, she is entitled to get "global compensation" of Rs five lakh and the insurance company (New India Assurance Company Limited) is directed to pay the amount while the two doctors are liable to pay litigation expenses of Rs 50,000 to the complainant, it further added.
