Washington [US], July 15 (ANI): According to a case-control research published online in the journal Occupational &amp; Environmental Medicine, certain occupations, such as hairdressers, beauticians, and accountants, may be associated with an elevated risk of <keyword id="142479" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ovarian-cancer" source="Orion">ovarian cancer</keyword>. Those working in sales, retail, clothing and construction industries may also be vulnerable, while high cumulative exposure to particular agents, including <keyword id="1089516" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="talcum-powder" source="Orion">talcum powder</keyword>, ammonia, propellant gases, petrol and bleaches may have an important role, the findings suggest. Few modifiable risk factors for ovarian cancer have been identified. Environmental factors, including those associated with the workplace, may increase the risk, but relatively few studies have evaluated the occupational hazards faced by women, say the researchers. And those that have, have often failed to account for potentially influential factors, previous employment history, or have included relatively few participants, so limiting the findings. To try and avoid these issues, the researchers drew on lifetime employment history from a population-based case-control study, to carry out an exploratory analysis looking at two dimensions of the workplace environment: employment in a particular role or industry; and specific occupational exposures. They included participants in the PRevention of OVArian Cancer in Quebec (PROVAQ) study, all of whom were aged 18-79, and who had been recruited from seven Montreal hospitals between 2010 and 2016 after being diagnosed with epithelial ovarian cancer. In all, 491 of these women meeting the inclusion criteria for the current study were matched for age and electoral roll district with 897 women who didn't have ovarian cancer. Information was collected from all the participants on sociodemographic background, medical history, prescribed meds, reproductive history, weight and height, lifestyle factors and lifetime employment history. More of the women with ovarian cancer had lower educational attainment, shorter oral contraceptive use, and either no or fewer children than women in the comparison group. These are all potential risk factors for the disease. For each job held for at least 6 months, participants reported the job title: start and end dates; working hours, including shift work; and main tasks performed. Cumulative length of employment in a job or industry was then categorised as never, less than 10 years, and 10 or more years. The Canadian job-exposure matrix (CANJEM) was used to calculate participants' exposure to specific agents in the workplace, and the relationship between exposure to each of the 29 most common agents and ovarian cancer risk was then assessed. After accounting for potentially influential factors, the calculations indicated that several job roles may be linked to a heightened risk of the disease. Specifically, working for 10 or more years as a hairdresser, barber, beautician and in related roles was associated with a three-fold higher risk, while employment for 10 or more years in accountancy was associated with a doubling in risk, and working in construction with a near tripling in risk. Similarly, long term work in the clothing industry, including embroidery, was associated with an 85% heightened risk of developing the disease while working in sales or retail was associated with heightened risks, respectively, of 45% and 59%. Heightened risks of more than 40% were observed for high cumulative exposure (8 or more years)-compared with none-to 18 different agents. These included talcum powder; ammonia; hydrogen peroxide; hair dust; synthetic fibres; polyester fibres; organic dyes and pigments; cellulose; formaldehyde; propellant gases; naturally occurring chemicals in petrol and bleaches. Hairdressers, beauticians and related workers were the jobs most frequently exposed to 13 agents, including ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, organic dyes and pigments, and bleaches, and the second most frequent occupation exposed to talcum powder. It's not clear, however, if these associations were driven by a single agent, a combination, or other workplace factors, say the researchers. The numbers of women employed in certain occupations--paper, printing, textile production, dry cleaning, manufacturing-or who had been exposed to specific agents, including those previously reported as potential ovarian cancer risk factors-asbestos and pesticides-were small, acknowledge the researchers. And some statistically significant associations observed were likely due to chance, given the number of analyses performed, they add. Further studies to replicate the findings will be needed, they emphasise. But they nonetheless conclude that their results "suggest that employment in certain occupations and specific occupational exposures may be associated with increased risks of ovarian cancer." The current study "reminds us that while the lack of representation of women in occupational cancer studies-and indeed, even potential strategies to address this issue-have been long recognised, there is still a need for improvement in studying women's occupational risks," write <keyword id="18017907" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="drs-melissa-friesen" source="Orion">Drs Melissa Friesen</keyword> and <keyword id="18017906" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="laura-beane-freeman" source="Orion">Laura Beane Freeman</keyword> of the <keyword id="819095" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-national-cancer-institute" source="Orion">US National Cancer Institute</keyword> in a linked commentary. "By excluding women, we miss the opportunity to identify risk factors for female specific cancers, to evaluate whether sex-specific differences in risk occur, and to study exposures occurring in occupations held primarily by women," they conclude. Deorah already has his plan charted out. Deorah feels apna has embarked on a Herculean task, to solve the earth-scale problems of unemployment, poverty and upskilling. He plans to do it by strengthening the platform, giving both jobseekers and prospective employers a good experience. He walks us through his plans of ensuring apna is able to achieve the ambitious goals it has set for itself in the next few years to come. Excerpts: Q) It’s been around 3 years since apna came into being. How has the journey been so far? Let me walk you through our journey so far. We launched apna in 2019 and our job is to connect job seekers with recruiters, and vice versa. Fast forward to 2022, we have over 20 million users, with a presence in over 50 cities. We have about 2 lakh people who trust us. Last month, we facilitated close to 20 million interviews through the platform. We try to create and expose opportunities to the rising workforce of India. Everyday we hear people asking, where are the jobs? At the same time, if you speak to prospective employers, they say they’re not finding the right candidates. So this is an asymmetry of information in the market that apna is trying to bridge by firstly ensuring that people who are posting jobs are deeply verified and have the right intent. At the same time, the candidates who are applying to jobs are well-filtered so that when they are connected to the employers, both sides get a relevant lead, ensuring higher chances of conversion. That's what we do today. In the future, we are working towards building a strong professional social network for the rising workforce of India, just like <keyword id="28120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="linkedin" source="Orion">LinkedIn</keyword> does for you and me. We also want to create upskilling opportunities for our target audience to help them move ahead in their careers. Q) The pandemic brought about a seismic change in the world around us. How did it affect apna’s business? During the pandemic, especially the second wave, we felt that we had a huge responsibility, to ensure that all with the reverse migration, people could find enough opportunities to help set up their lives all over again. And during those 4-5 months of the second wave, we grew by almost 70% because we were working overtime to ensure that everything is at the right place for the candidates to find the right opportunities and the employers to post the right kind of jobs. Q) How have you been communicating with your audience? How have you been able to grow your reach? Apna is a network effects product. More employers will bring more candidates and vice versa. And the second network effect is a professional network that you create for these candidates, where people from similar vocation can speak to each other, just like we do on LinkedIn. So the power of the product has helped us grow over the last couple of years. Secondly, we have put together some innovative marketing campaigns. We’ve worked a lot to ensure that our value propositions which we swear by and execute are communicated to the candidate. There is a lot of asymmetry of information in the market and a lot of job postings on the internet are fake. That's something we’re extremely mindful of. When a candidate comes to apna, he or she knows that the jobs on our platform won’t be fake. And that helps us. Once they find the job, they refer us to multiple of their friends and family. So walking the talk is our second critical piece. Marketing can only take you so far. If you're selling something that is not right for me, I won’t care about how beautiful your ads are. Q) Word-of-mouth has worked well for you then? Absolutely. And word-of-mouth is a function of good execution. Q) You spoke about some innovative marketing. Can you give me a few examples? Marketing has two parts. The first is what you say and the second is how and where say it. The ‘where you say it’ part has been democratized over the last 5-6 years because people are spending more and more time on their phones. So when about 30-35% of their attention span in a day ends up being on the mobile phone, that becomes a conduit for us to reach our audience. What we say becomes extremely critical because we primarily focus on our value propositions. The reality is that this is a market that is plagued by mistrust. So if you walk the talk, your audiences and consumers will absolutely love you. We ensure that we only talk about things that we can actually execute and pull off and I call that innovative because you're doing the regular things but you're doing it well. We don't discount any mediums. We use anything that helps us reach out to our audiences. Q) Where does the majority of your target audience reside? Is it metros or smaller cities? We don't really segregate it that way. We try to understand where are the right opportunities for the right candidates. Our internal data says that over 50% of people in say a city like Agra are looking for jobs in Delhi. So while we target them in Agra, we tell them about jobs in different cities. Q) Can you talk us about your growth? Where are you currently and where do you want to go? Today, there are over 20 million consumers who trust us. Our aim is to at least double this number in the next 12-18 months because you can't do enough for the country. We want to ensure that we keep working hard and delivering on what our aim and ambition is, and hopefully add to the growth of the country. Q) There are already many players in the segment who have been around longer and already have a wide consumer base. What gives apna an edge? Internally, we don't really worry about or discuss competition because if we know what the right thing to do is, we just execute on that. So what gives us the edge is, over the last couple of years, we have very deeply focused on ensuring that the experience of the candidates as well as the employers is absolutely fantastic because that would make people come back to our platform. We make sure every call is genuine. Of course, if today we’re good, in the future we want to be exceptional. So we have a long way to go. If we keep doing the right things consistently, we only have the size of our ambition to worry about. Q) Is there a community communication side to apna as well, similar to what we have on LinkedIn? Absolutely! That’s one of our core focus areas. We launched a community product or groups for Indian professionals where they can send each other connection requests and connect with each other. Some of our groups like government job preparation or beautician groups are buzzing. We have included this in our Android app. We see people sharing helpful tips to each other, they try to help each other find jobs. And it's a very safe and professional place to communicate with each other and build a professional network for the rising workforce in India. Q) How big is the team currently? How are you expanding it further? We have about 500 people across India. We need to at least double this number over the next 18-24 months if we want to hit our ambitious goals because there's a lot we want to do. Q) Going ahead, what are a key focus areas for you going to be? A key focus area for us for this year as well as for the next 4-5 years is to keep improving the platform, the candidate and employee experience and our community. We already have over 70 communities and groups for different kinds of vocations, our task is to keep improving on those so that people look forward to coming online, sharing and exploring better opportunities for themselves at all times. As a company, we believe that for the rising workforce of India, there's a glass ceiling that people around them have created for them. They are told they can’t go beyond that and they themselves start believing that. We want to break that glass ceiling. Secondly, our aim would be to take our brand story to the world. Today, how much we can help people is not very well-known within our target audience. So our job would be to take that message to the right people in the right way which will help catapult growth.

It seems that the NDA government did not have a glance at 2014 survey of <keyword id="259702" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Labour-Bureau">Labour Bureau</keyword> before rooting for skill programme. 
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has set a new target of getting 400 million Indians skilled by 2022, aiming to plug the ‘skills gap’. 
 
However, the survey done by the Labour Bureau in 2014, which has been revealed this year, reads that the unemployment rate among skilled ones was higher. 
 People who got formal training from institutions like <keyword id="129428" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Industrial-Training-Institute">Industrial Training Institute</keyword> (ITI) or other Skill Centers, the unemployment rate was high - at 14.5% - compared to 2.6% overall. 
 
Surprisingly, the survey revealed that apart from trades like plumbing, motor driving, leather work, all other categories of skilled persons exhibited double-digit unemployment figures. 
 
The unemployment rate of engineers, other than civil and computer, was 25% and that of hairdressing/beautician was 19%. 
 
Over 14% with machine operator skills were without jobs. 
 Jayan Jose Thomas of IIT Delhi, who has researched the Indian employment scenario extensively, told Times of India that unless new jobs, especially in the <keyword id="6395867" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="manufacturing-sector">manufacturing sector</keyword>, were created, imparting skills to millions would not solve the problem. 
 
"Existing industry does face a skills gap. That's what entrepreneurs and industrialists keep telling me. So, imparting skills will help somewhat. But the primary thing is to have a policy for industrial growth that will create millions of new, decent job opportunities," he told TOI. 
 
About 12 million people join the workforce every year in India. 
 
Labour Bureau survey shows that unemployment rates are higher among those with higher educational qualifications. 
 
The overall unemployment rate was reported at 2.6% among the over-15 age population. While for postgraduates it was 8.9, for graduates the figure stood at 8.7%. The rate for diploma or certificate holders was 7.4%. 
 
As per a NSSO report, the average daily wage of an urban diploma holding worker was about Rs 524 for men and Rs 391 for women.

This anachronistic place has a greater goal than entertainment. Glenner Town Square is a treatment center that's helping improve the lives of people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia.The facility is named after Dr. George Glenner and his wife, Joy. Dr. Glenner was a renowned Alzheimer's researcher whose discoveries led to significant advancements in understanding the disease. The town replica sits inside a 20,000-square-foot building in Chula Vista, California, about 7 miles south of San Diego and 5 miles north of the Mexican border. But it looks nothing like its modern city neighbors. Instead, Town Square is designed to look like a town from somewhere between 1953 and 1961, meant to reflect the era when most of the participants were young adults.Scott Tarde: People make their strongest memories typically between the ages of 10 and 30. And if you think about it, the reason that that is is because people typically have a lot of life's firsts at that time. Graduating high school, graduating college, marriage, children, jobs.Narrator: Helping people recall and discuss these major life events is part of reminiscence therapy, one of the core concepts of Town Square's program. Reminiscence therapy often uses prompts like old photos and memorabilia to elicit reactions, trigger memories, or improve the mood of people with dementia. The therapy isn't a cure for Alzheimer's, but it's been proven to help ease some of the confusion and agitation that people can often feel. But instead of just a single photo or object, the town offers a more immersive experience with the idea that it will have an even more powerful effect.Scott: If we can take people back to a time where their memories are their strongest, what we're seeing is really a reduction in agitation and improvement in mood and improvement in sleep quality.Narrator: Sonia Bland has seen her mother improve since she started coming to Town Square.Sonia Bland: Mom was always very social, and when we received the diagnosis, she kind of withdrew. She's a lot happier these days. We've noticed she rests a lot better at night. She looks forward, in the morning, to getting ready and going, so there's more purpose for her. In the last six months, there has been no decline.Narrator: Being able to drop her mother off four days a week is a huge help to Sonia. She goes to work on those days and gets to take a break from caring for her mother 24-7, and Eva gets to participate in activities she likes, like painting and dancing.Producer: You like to dance?Eva Casillas: Oh, yeah. There are 11 different storefronts, but participants typically only visit around four or five in a day. There's a pet shop with birds and fish where participants go for pet therapy. The central town square, called Glenner Park, is where they play bocce or do group exercises. Inside the retro diner, participants eat lunch, socialize, and play bingo. Next to the diner is a mock pub where people can shoot some pool or play poker. And across the street is Joy's Department Store. Inside Joy's, participants can browse clothing or attend a class. This group is taking a jewelry-making class. The movie theater plays old TV shows and films, and there's even a vintage Thunderbird to tinker with or just admire.As part of the intake process for the program, caretakers fill out a form detailing information about the participant and their past. This allows Town Square staff to focus on particular activities that are meaningful to each individual. One participant had been a barber, so the staff at Town Square asked him if he would help out at the barber shop, called The Silver Fox. A visiting beautician comes to the shop a few times a month, so they asked if the former barber would consult on haircuts and help out with inventory of supplies.Scott: We encouraged him that we really needed his expertise, and then all of a sudden you could see that kind of spark and that trigger of purpose.Narrator: Scott wants to be able to give that sense of purpose to more people.Alzheimer's disease affects an estimated 5.7 million Americans, and if no cure is found, experts predict that number will keep growing. Currently, Town Square serves about 200 people in the Chula Vista location, but they have plans to expand. Town Square has partnered with Senior Helpers, a company that provides senior-care services. They aim to bring more facilities like this one to cities across the nation.Before Eva Casillas got Alzheimer's, she was a caretaker for her mother, who also had the disease. Now, Sonia fears she, too, will get Alzheimer's.Sonia: You know, there is some fear that in the future, if there's no cure, I may need to keep my mind busy and healthy.Narrator: But Town Square has been a big help to Sonia's family, and she hopes it will continue to help people in the future. With the growing need for senior care, not only for those with dementia but for the whole aging population, Scott sees this as an issue that shouldn't be overlooked.Scott: I don't see healthcare as a political issue. Healthcare's a right. It's not a privilege. At a very basic level, people deserve the right to be taken care of. I get goosebumps when I talk about this because people need to know that these services exist, and they shouldn't be hidden or a puzzle. Most people don't think about Alzheimer's disease until it's upon them, so, you know, let's get the dialogue going.

It is the first week of January, 2017 and the deadline to deposit old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 has gone long past. But the queues outside RBI offices across the country show no sign of clearing up. Towards the end of December, the Narendra Modi government also came out with an ordinance that made possession or transaction of old currency illegal. The 50-day period from November 8 to December 30 saw frequent changes in rules and regulations, withdrawal and deposit limits. Even the relaxation to exchange invalid notes given to Non Resident Indians (NRIs) and Indians who were abroad came at the last minute after a lot of confusion. 
 
Initially, Prime Minister Modi in his November 8 speech had promised the citizens that they will be given adequate options even post December 30. 
 
This explains why many say they feel cheated as they relied on the Prime Minister’s assurances that genuine cases will be considered even after the deadline. But why they chose to not use the 50-day period remains often unanswered. 
 
A lady who got frustrated after failed attempts to exchange Rs 5,000 at RBI’s Delhi office for the past three days, protested by stripping in front of the bank. 
 
Our rounds at the RBI headquarters in Mumbai showed the situation was not any different as people were tensed and frustrated. Around 50 – 60 people had gathered near the entrance. Most were not aware of the change in rule that only NRIs could exchange the invalid currency at RBI branches post December 30th. They were also angry over not being able to communicate with the RBI officials for proper information. 
The officials appeared once in a while on the other side of the entrance and let the NRIs in while the rest were barred by the security personnel. Some were also under the impression that people with a passport can exchange currencies and not aware of the clause of ‘NRIs’ and ‘Indians who were abroad during the 50 days’. One shouted in anger, “Khali foreigner logon keliye, Indian keheke fayada kya hain?” 
 
But as much as one feels empathy for those who are left with invalid notes, some of the reasons given for not exchanging the notes are quite strange. However, the fact that they came to exchange small amounts does show that most of them are genuine cases. 
 
1. Cow offering: A person from Powai came with Rs. 2,500 with the money he collected from ‘gaay ka dabba’ or the offerings given to cows which are considered sacred. 
 
2. Money found inside a folded saree: A beautician from Bandra found Rs. 20,000 kept inside a folded saree in her cupboard while cleaning her house on New Year. 
 
3. Piggy bank treasure: An architecture student from Saboo Siddik College, Byculla said she found Rs 2,500 from her piggy bank when she opened it to gather money for her college picnic. When she approached Punjab National bank, they asked her to go to RBI. 
 
4. Saved it from alcoholic son: Vijaya a housewife from Thane had come to deposit the pension amount of her mother –in – law. The latter had hid an amount of Rs. 7,000 in the demonetised notes from her alcoholic son, but could not find it until recently. 
 
5. Forgotten wedding gift: A couple from Marine Lines found an envelope with Rs. 3,000 which was a blessing cover they received on their wedding in December 2015. 
 
6. Senior citizen’s memory failed her: A 78 year old lady from Vapi came with her daughter to RBI Mumbai. Her daughter said that she was losing memory and had forgotten about Rs. 5,000 pension amount kept in the cupboard. Upon finding it, she travelled all the way from Vapi, Gujarat to her daughter’s place in central Mumbai. 
 
7. Money found under the bed: A senior citizen from Kurla had brought an amount of Rs 5,500 which he found from under the bed of his wife who is bedridden. He said he did not know that only NRIs can deposit money after December 30. 
 
There were also people like two sisters who had come to exchange Rs 1,000 which they found recently, but were relaxed even if it could not be exchanged. However, the majority of the people we met were those who could not bear the loss of their hard earned money. 
 
Demonetising 86% of the notes in circulation was never going to be an easy job. And, in a country of 1.2 bn people, there will always be late comers. But considering that such a massive exercise was pushed to be completed within 50-days, maybe the government should consider some leniency and a fresh window with exchange limits for those who were left out in the process. After all, this was an exercise to flush out black money hoarders and not the economically deprived.

At 13, a young Neetu was married off to a mentally challenged man three times her age. The fact that her father-in-law forced himself on her made things worse. 
 
Her decision to walk out of that marriage was met with apprehension from her parents who fearing social stigma married her off a second time. 
 
And, at 14 she became mother to two twins. 
 
For any other girl, that would have been the end. However, for Neetu, this was only the beginning. 
 
Belonging to a poor family, she had to work doubly hard to support her family and she took on many jobs. She's tilled land, worked as a beautician, a maid, a shop clerk and even a self-taught tailor. 
 
"I learned to sew just by unstitching old suits and restitching them back together. I couldn't afford training. I had no money," she says. 
Neetu who only studied till class 7 always had a knack for sports- which started with her high-hurdling over her grandmother’s bushes. She was inspired by wrestling while watching the TV coverage of the international games staged in New Delhi. 
 
 
 
But, being a mother to twin sons meant that she kept aside her dream of becoming an international <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=wrestler&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">wrestler</a> for the next two-three years and focused on their needs first. 
 
She couldn’t however stay away for long. 
 
It was a chance encounter with a yoga coach that she believed changed her life. The yoga coach gave her the number of wrestling coach Ziley Singh and Neetu expressed her desire to learn wrestling despite being a mother two. 
 
Singh encouraged her, telling her that if<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mary+kom&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> Mary Kom</a> can win a medal in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=olympics&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Olympics</a> after motherhood, so could she. 
 
This sent her hopes soaring.

	 
	Neetu who took the sport seriously only when she was 17, became a national medalist in the senior category by the time she was 19. And, last year the 21-year-old represented India at the Junior World Championships in Brazil and returned with a silver medal from the National Games held in Kerala as well. 
	 
	Achieving all this at such a young age meant she needed to train with strict discipline. 
	 
	 
	 
	 For over two years, Neetu rose at 3 am, for the bumpy one hour and a half bus ride from her village Bedwa to reach to her gruelling morning workout in the city of <keyword id="49507" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="rohtak">Rohtak</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=haryana&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Haryana</a>, which is famous for its wrestling tradition. 
	 
	After practice, she would return home to do housework, undertaking another journey back in the afternoon for more drills. Once back, she would help her kids with their homework. 
	 
	Now, Neetu lives in a small room near the gym, which spares herself the long deadly commute back and forth from her village. Her new living arrangement means that she sees her twin sons only on the weekend. According to Neetu, their father and her second husband has been her saviour. 
	 
	 
	"He's given me a new life. He pulled me out of hell and brought me to heaven. I'm able to wrestle because of him. I'm away and we don't have a usual husband-wife relationship. He's made a huge sacrifice," Neetu says. 
	 Her husband Sanjay however wasn’t always supportive. When Neetu first confided in him her dream of being a <keyword id="6373668" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="wrestler">wrestler</keyword>, he thought she was crazy. But, as time went on and he saw her passion,. He lent his support and adjusted to his new role as a house-husband. He claims he learnt to do housework by watching her. 
	 
	As the moment, she practice with 25 other young women in the Chhotu Ram Stadium and Wrestling Center twice a day- four hours in the morning and three and a half hours in the afternoon, lunging and contouring her body into impossible positions. 
	 
	The same village elders who were unhappy about her entering the male-dominated akharas gave her a grand welcome last year when she returned home victorious from the National Games. 
	 
	That’s not all. Neetu is also training to qualify for this year’s World Wrestling Championships and is being supported by the Sushil4Sports Foundation, started by wrestler <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=sushil+kumar&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Sushil Kumar</a>, her biggest idol.
