Sure, having a great product and building a community of loyal fans is still crucial. But in 2023, there isn't an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/angel-investors-help-early-stage-dtc-brands-as-vc-retreats-2022-8">army of investors ready to back</a> consumer brands. CEOs are also spending less cash on Google or Facebook ads for fast growth and are more preoccupied with profitability.<a href="https://the-lead.co/">The Lead</a>, a research and events company, has released the fifth edition of its <a href="https://the-lead.co/the-foremost-50-2023-gated/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Foremost 50"</a> list, which highlights the DTC fashion, beauty, and lifestyle startups navigating these hurdles and disrupting how legacy brands operate. Most of the companies on the list are funded. But raising capital is not a major factor for making the list like it was in the past, Sonal Gandhi, chief product officer at The Lead, told Insider. "A lot of the brands featured this year have raised no money or have raised very little at the very early years," she said. "And then, somehow, once they hit that profitability number that they were looking for, they've managed to grow without having to raise additional funding." More important is "how efficient they are with the money that they have," Gandhi added. How startups <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/metas-bet-on-ai-is-bringing-back-advertisers-2023-1">acquire customers outside of Facebook and Instagram</a>, how they configure <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/breakfast-getting-pricier-americans-data-2023-1">supply chain networks</a>, and the rate of repeat purchases from customers are other key factors. As examples, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/athletic-brewing-company-beer-taste-experience-2022-7">Gandhi highlighted Athletic Brewing</a> and jewelry brand Dorsey — both on the list this year. The latter owns its own breweries, which Gandhi says shows a unique way to use capital and attract customers outside of online ads, while Dorsey is catering to better-for-the-environment trends by selling lab-grown diamonds. "Product is an important part of what these brands do, but you cannot just win with a great product," she said. "So we're seeing creative approaches to customer acquisition. We're seeing creative approaches to building communities and then using influencers or other ways to sort of build your brand."While higher borrowing rates and the macroeconomic environment are top of mind for DTC CEOs this year, hiring should be much easier in 2023."Just in terms of growing your teams and getting the expertise, certainly it's gonna be easier going forward for them," Gandhi said. Recently, we've noticed that tree-derived fabrics are popping up under names like <a href="https://www.tencel.com/sustainability">TENCEL Lyocell and TENCEL Modal</a>, <a href="http://yulex.com/products/fsc-hevea/">Yulex Pure</a>, and bamboo-derived <a href="https://goodonyou.eco/material-guide-viscose-really-better-environment/">viscose</a> to name a few. These are all just fancy terms for fabrics that are spun from tree fibers. To shoppers like us, it might seem like a no-brainer to use environmentally-friendly alternative fabrics, but for brands, it can be a tricky place. Lyocell, patented by the Austrian company <a href="https://www.tencel.com/">TENCEL</a>, is made by <a href="https://goodonyou.eco/how-ethical-is-tencel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">taking wood pulp</a> from the bark and leaves of trees, dissolving the pulp in an organic solvent which creates cellulose fibers, and finally weaving it into yarn. Not only does this create a soft breathable fabric, but it goes one step further in gaining a stamp of sustainability. <a href="https://www.tencel.com/sustainability">TENCEL</a> uses wood from natural forests and sustainably managed plantations that are approved by the Forest Stewardship Council. According to Kathrin Hamm, founder and CEO of <a href="http://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=999&amp;u=1088116&amp;m=84704&amp;afftrack=biip_060319_products-brands-tree-derived-materials&amp;urllink=bearaby.com%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bearaby</a>, "TENCEL is produced in a responsible closed-loop process, using 10 times less water than regular fabrics." Meaning the water and solvents used during the process are <a href="https://www.tencel.com/sustainability">recycled at a rate of more than 99%</a> which keeps the water we interact with cleaner after production. Patagonia uses another type of tree-fabric called <a href="http://yulex.com/products/fsc-hevea/">Yulex Pure</a> in its rubber wetsuits, which is also <a href="http://yulex.com/about/sustainability-commitment/">FSC Certified</a>. Latex sap is extracted from Hevea trees and processed in a solar-powered factory that refines the material rather than chemically alters it. This process removes more than 99% impurities and toxins that are associated with rubber - including the protein that causes latex allergies - while maintaining its elasticity.Matt Dwyer, Director of Material Innovation at <a href="http://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;merchant_id=50d08f80-6a3b-4a15-90d3-1b7c09b770b0&amp;website_id=9597bdee-ce2a-4552-aa13-419b5f275c06&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.patagonia.com%2Fhome%2F&amp;ctc=biip_060319_products-brands-tree-derived-materials" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Patagonia</a>, says, "Our environmental assessments revealed [that] because the polyisoprene polymer was produced in trees instead of factories using solar energy instead of generated electricity, up to around 80% less climate-altering CO2 was emitted in the manufacturing process when compared to traditional neoprene.He continues, "Most importantly, since only 0.5% of the world's rubber supply currently comes from FSC-certified sources, we hope our choice will motivate other businesses to incorporate more sustainable practices in their supply chains."Other companies like <a href="http://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=999&amp;u=1088116&amp;m=72231&amp;afftrack=biip_060319_products-brands-tree-derived-materials&amp;urllink=coophomegoods.com%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Coop Home Goods</a> are creating viscose from bamboo which is "bridging sustainability with modern fabric developments," says co-founder Kevin Chon. Made similarly to lyocell, bamboo-derived viscose uses cellulose fibers from pulped bamboo to create yarn. Although it's technically a grass, the structure of bamboo is comparable to that of wood. But using sustainably sourced bamboo is key as it can help eliminate the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and release about <a href="https://open.library.ubc.ca/cIRcle/collections/undergraduateresearch/18861/items/1.0108410">40% more oxygen</a> than trees.
