The <keyword id="46227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="International-Cricket-Council" source="Orion">International Cricket Council</keyword> (<keyword id="6355164" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICC" source="Orion">ICC</keyword>) chairman and CEO are in Lahore to seek guarantees from the <keyword id="6355595" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PCB" source="Orion">PCB</keyword> that it will not push for implementing a hybrid model for its matches in the ODI World Cup in India later this year. Insiders confirmed to PTI that ICC chairman Greg Barclay and CEO Geoff Allardice have specifically come to Lahore to get some assurances from the <keyword id="43712" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan-Cricket-Board" source="Orion">Pakistan Cricket Board</keyword> on the national team's participation in the World Cup in October-November. The development comes after PCB chief Najam Sethi made it clear that the team will not travel for the World Cup in India if the Rohit Sharma led side doesn't visit Pakistan for the preceding Asia Cup. “The ICC and World Cup hosts, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are concerned with the hybrid model being pushed by Najam Sethi who heads the cricket management committee of the PCB. “Although the hybrid model has been suggested by Sethi for the Asia Cup which precedes the ICC event, the concern remains that once accepted for the regional event the PCB might also then ask the ICC to implement it for the World Cup when it comes to Pakistan playing in India,” he explained. Sethi has already indicated that if the Pakistan government doesn't give clearance or has security concerns about sending the team to India, PCB could ask the ICC to hold Pakistan's matches at a neutral venue. “Naturally neither the ICC nor the BCCI want such a situation since Pakistan's unequivocal participation in matches in India would guarantee the success of Indo-Pakistan matches and also the tournament itself.” Another source said this was the primary reason why BCCI secretary Jay Shah was still reluctant to accept the hybrid model for the Asia Cup and support having three or four matches of the tournament in Pakistan and the remaining games in UAE or Sri Lanka. Pakistan are the hosts of the Asia Cup and Sethi has said repeatedly that if the tournament is moved to one neutral country from Pakistan, it will not take part in the competition. ICC top brass seeks PCB assurances that it will send team to India for ODI World Cup

A cricket series between neighbouring countries India and Pakistan, sharing a love-hate relationship with each other, is yet to be approved from the government, but it has already started attracting advertisers and sponsors. However, if media planners are to be believed, amidst the growing debates about religious intolerance in India, brands can be bit guarded. 
 As per the reports, Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan, has already given his nod for the bilateral series to take place in December in the neutral country Sri Lanka in December, <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> is yet to get an approval from the external affairs ministry. 
 
In February this year, the World Cup match between India and Pakistan got a very high rating of 14.8 among males. The match was watched by 288 million people in India, thus becoming the most watched event in the country after the final of the cricket world cup that India won in 2011. This match saw brands paying 25 lakh rupees for 10 seconds of ad time, making it count in the highest ad rates ever for a cricket match. 
 
However, amidst the heated debates about whether India is becoming more and more intolerant about religious matters, experts are of the view that brands would be a bit hesitant before spending too much. "In the current environment, brands will be a little reticent before taking the final decision," Nandini Dias, chief executive at media agency Lodestar UM, told ET. She, however, also said that all these matches between India and Pakistan appeal a lot to advertisers, wherever they might happen. 
 
The last time India played a match against Pakistan was in India in December 2012; the series saw three one-days and two T20s. However, talking of test matches, there hasn't been one since 2007. Even the impending December series could see three one-days and two T20s. While Sri Lanka has emerged as the favoured destination, other venues were also considered. 
 
The news however, didn’t get too much support on social media, because we soon saw the hashtag #NoCricketWithPakistan trending.

It’s a way of life, and as clichéd as it sounds, it has the power to unite people in joy (think of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Indian-Cricket-Team-To-Don-A-Different-Blue-This-World-Cup/articleshow/45896013.cms">World cup wins</a> or semi-final clashes with Pakistan, Bangladesh or Australia) or in collective anger, especially after a harrowing defeat. 
 However, what has remained constant since time immemorial is that <keyword id="1521" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cricket">cricket</keyword> has always triumphed and been a staple of our sports diet, even at the cost of other sports’ fight for recognition. 
 
But, for the first time, it seems like the spirit of cricket might be leveling down in the country, and there’s no better proof of that, than the recent controversy surrounding the possibility of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-India-Pak-cricket-series-may-not-have-the-govts-no-yet-but-advertisers-are-lining-up-by-the-hoards/articleshow/49947113.cms">India vs Pakistan cricket series</a> taking place. 
 
Both the teams who make for excellent rivals on field and are brimming with talent haven’t played Test cricket since 2007 though Pakistan toured India in the winter of 2012-2013 for a short-limited over series, clearly highlighting the anticipation of cricket fans to see the Indian cricket team clash with their Pakistani counterpart once again. 
 
So, what’s the holdup and when did a harmless cricket series between these two countries snowball into a controversy? 
 
It all started when the issue of bilateral cricket resuming between India and Pakistan took centre stage and was debated incessantly due to the escalating border tensions between these two countries. The fact that both the cricket boards (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/BCCI-chief-Jagmohan-Dalmiyas-final-journey-begins/articleshow/49044999.cms">BCCI</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Pakistan-rejects-BCCIs-offer-to-hold-bilateral-cricket-series-in-India/articleshow/49783707.cms">PCB</a>) were at loggerheads regarding the venue of the scheduled series in December didn’t help matters either. 
 Even as IPL chairman <keyword id="13855" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajeev-Shukla">Rajeev Shukla</keyword> pushed for the resumption of cricket ties between the two countries, stressing on the fact that cricket should not be mixed politics, his suggestion fell to deaf ears with the <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> refusing to give out an official comment regarding the series. Pakistan Cricket Board (<keyword id="6355595" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="PCB">PCB</keyword>) on the other hand has made its consent regarding the series clear and it was decided that the bilateral series would be held at a neutral venue, i.e., Srilanka. 
 
Though, it’s a given that the PCB’s decision was also wrapped in politics, considering the venue is a massive relief for the PCB, as it solved the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/India-might-play-cricket-withPakistan-in-December-But-there-mightbe-a-spoiler-ahead/articleshow/47280508.cms">broadcasting rights issue</a> for them. 
 
“If the series was to be held in India, the broadcasting rights for the same would go to Star Sports as it has the exclusive rights of covering home, which would mean massive loss of revenue for PCB, whose multi-million dollar deal hinges on a match with India. And, now with Srilanka being the possible venue, Dubai-based Ten Sports will officially be the sole broadcaster of the series and as a result save PCB a lot of money,” said a Star Sports official on request of anonymity. 
 
However, BCCI who had sought an approval from the external affairs ministry is yet to offer an official statement as it is still waiting for a go-ahead from the government on the scheduled series. Pakistan’s Nawaz Sharif has given his consent. 
 
Till date, the government remains mum on the issue due to the politics and animosity that’s in question between the two nations. If that wasn’t bad enough, social media has been taken by storm with tweets against India playing Pakistan, with the hashtag #NoCricketWithPakistan trending at no 1 for a few days. 
 
There were tweets from people hinting that it would be an injustice to what happened in Mumbai if the government does intend to go ahead with the series. Another said, Modi should respect the public sentiment (which is against a match between the two countries) and instead cancel it. 
 
What they refuse to understand is that cricket or any sports for that matter has nothing to do with politics and for the first time they are encouraging an environment when cricket will end up being the loser.

 Anurag Thakur, the <keyword id="44284" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Secretary">secretary</keyword> of the <keyword id="81008" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Board-of-Control-for-Cricket-in-India">Board of Control for Cricket in India</keyword> (<keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword>) told The Economic Times that there is no final commitment yet and that these are just initial talks. Thakur had also met Khan in Delhi yesterady. 
 As per the news report published in the ET, a few <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> MPs had raised objections to a proposed India-Pakistan series. Modi had told his party men at a BJP parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday that the government has taken a decision to start a cricket series between the two countries to improve relations. 
 PCB chief Khan had said earlier this week, after a meeting with Indian cricket board president <keyword id="82274" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jagmohan-Dalmiya">Jagmohan Dalmiya</keyword>, that Pakistan was ready to host India in the UAE in December. 
 A <keyword id="160569" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="senior-official">senior official</keyword> told the financial daily that the home ministry had been broached for its views on the prospect of holding a India-Pakistan cricket series in the UAE and has conveyed that since the series is proposed in a third country, it falls outside the MHA remit. The <keyword id="6354852" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="official">official</keyword> said MHA view is that this is "purely a ministry of external affairs matter as it concerns international relations". "Had the series been proposed in India, we would have surely done a domestic assessment of the same considering the security scenarios. But a series in a third country is purely in the domain of the MEA. This has been conveyed by us," said a <keyword id="1735963" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="senior-home-ministry-official">senior home ministry official</keyword>, on condition of anonymity. 
 
The December series is likely to have three Tests, five ODIs and two T20 matches. Khan, however, was quoted as saying that there was one more hurdle to overcome. 
 A <keyword id="306885" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="senior-BCCI-official">senior BCCI official</keyword> said Khan was referring to differences between the two boards on broadcast rights as PCB has an association with Ten <keyword id="6356028" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sports">Sports</keyword>, owned by <keyword id="2850930" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Subhash-Chandra-run">Subhash Chandra-run</keyword> Zee group. Chandra has been in the news for trying to set up a rival cricketing league and BCCI does not approve of PCB's association with Ten.

Its too early for us to consider disciplinary action against the State association."
