Greek officials had ruled out supplying the S-300, initially purchased by Cyprus in the 1990s but ultimately delivered to Crete <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/pauliddon/2022/12/31/greek-s-300s-why-russian-officials-are-referencing-the-cyprus-missile-crisis/?sh=10ce75385859">to defuse a crisis with Turkey</a>. Athens has supplied Kyiv infantry fighting vehicles and small arms since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.The list of advanced weapons that countries initially denied Ukraine is long and includes F-16s, M1 Abrams tanks, and ATACMS missiles. The conversation around the Greek S-300 is changing, said George Tzogopoulos, a senior fellow at the Centre International de Formation Européenne."What is new is the change in the tone of the national media coverage about such a possibility," Tzogopoulos told Business Insider. "Greece's priority is its defense. As long as Greek defense needs are satisfied, the policy of swap deals will continue. Ukraine may have lost at least one Patriot launcher — not an entire system — in a Russian Iskander missile strike outside the eastern city of Pokrovsk on Mar. 9; this claim could not be independently confirmed. The <a target="_blank" href="https://t.me/mod_russia/36445">Russian defense ministry</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://tass.com/defense/1757417">identified</a> the destroyed launcher as a Ukrainian S-300.There were already credible theories <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-destroyed-key-russia-aircraft-maybe-used-patriot-missiles-experts-2024-1">in January</a> that Ukraine had relocated Patriots near the front lines, enabling them to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-says-it-downed-over-dozen-russian-planes-this-month-2024-2">shoot down a dozen Russian fighter jets in February</a>."The loss showed the consequences of not changing location frequently in the context of a much faster detection-engagement cycle enabled by ubiquitous drones integrated with fire capabilities as part of multi-level reconnaissance-strike complexes," Borsari said.Russia attacked Ukraine's Odesa on Mar. 6 while Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was visiting. A Russian missile exploded <a target="_blank" href="https://edition.cnn.com/2024/03/06/europe/russia-missile-odesa-greece-russia-zelensky-intl/index.html">a mere 500 meters</a> from the convoy he was traveling in with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelensky."The Odesa military strike was a personal shock for the Greek delegation visiting Ukraine," Tzogopoulos said. "But strategic decisions are not made on the grounds of personal experiences. Greece values its strategic relationship with the US, which is how the new tone of the media discussion about sending S-300s to Ukraine could be better framed."While Ukraine's capacity to continue fighting against Russia's invasion depends on many factors, Tzogopoulos pointed out that Greece's contribution could "acquire new significance" if it transfers S-300s. Greece is <a target="_blank" href="https://greekcitytimes.com/2022/03/14/nato-explores-sending-ukraine-more-advanced-weapons/">estimated</a> to have 32 launchers and up to 175 missiles it could provide."Important as it will be, such a decision can hardly be considered a game changer, though," Tzogopoulos said. "Ukraine already possesses that type of long-range surface-to-air system and will benefit by seeing the number of its batteries increase — not by acquiring a new type of weapon."Although it certainly won't be a new capability, the particular S-300 variant in Greece's possession could benefit Ukraine.Borsari of CEPA pointed out that Greece's S-300PMU-1 variant is more capable than the S-300PS variant typically operated by Ukraine."The S-300PMU-1 relies on an upgraded battery's radar module with improved detection, tracking, and engagement capabilities (comprising the 30N6E fire control radar and 76N6E low-level early warning/acquisition radar — and potentially the battalion-level 64N6E acquisition radar) and can fire the 48N6E missile besides the usual 5V55 series," Borsari said.Borsari added, "The latter has better kinematics, a longer range (up to 150 km), and a larger warhead. It uses a combination of radio command guidance and semi-active radar homing guidance and is effective against a wide target set, from cruise missiles and fast jets to ballistic-type threats." Kinematics refer to the flight paths that can be flown to intercept an incoming missile or aircraft.Given the "attrition suffered" by Ukrainian S-300 systems so far in this war, Borsari believes that even a "limited number of launchers" could be "very useful" for Kyiv."If radars and spare interceptors are also included in the package, that would be a significant addition to Ukraine's air and missile defense," Borsari said.

Greece's S-300 missiles could bolster Ukraine's air defenses at a critical moment

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US Navy wants to use compact lasers to shoot down cheap exploding drones.</li><li>Rechargeable magazines could enable laser weapons to fire more shots before needing to cool.</li></ul>The recent attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea have highlighted a problem: launching a $2 million air defense missile to stop a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/12/19/missile-drone-pentagon-houthi-attacks-iran-00132480">$2,000 drone</a> is a bad trade. Not just financially, but also because warships carry a limited number of missiles.Laser weapons avoid these problems, or at least in theory. As long as there is enough electricity, they can continuously fire. And do so more cheaply than missile launchers or air defense cannon, with costs as low as a dollar per shot or less. However, current high-energy lasers, or HEL, suffer from basic issues that have inhibited their use. Not running out of ammunition is nice, but the price is the need to access vast amounts of electricity. Continuously firing these lasers also generates a lot of heat, which limits firing time and requires bulky cooling systems unsuitable for mounting on small platforms such as drones.The US Navy’s solution? Create lasers that use the equivalent of a magazine for rifles. But rather than containing bullets, these clips would contain a limited amount of battery power. When the laser drains one magazine, just swap it out for a fresh one, while the depleted magazines recharge. “These ‘replacement’ magazines offer an opportunity to forgo ‘near infinite life’ requirements and examine the potential benefits of limited life (tens to hundreds of shots) and potentially expendable, quickly replaceable munition type power and cooling sub-assemblies,” according to the Navy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.navysbir.com/n24_1/N241-066.htm">solicitation</a>. The Navy is aiming for a magazine that can power a small weapon of 20 kilowatts and operate on a 1-micron wavelength. Because it would be air-cooled rather than cooled by water, the laser’s weight would be no more than 20 pounds. That’s not a very powerful system compared to current lasers that range from big <a target="_blank" href="https://news.lockheedmartin.com/2023-10-10-US-Army-Selects-Lockheed-Martin-to-Deliver-300-kW-class-Solid-State-Laser-Weapon-System">300-kilowatt devices</a> to 50-kilowatt weapons mounted on Stryker armored vehicles for short-range air defense.However, it would be perfect for the real prize that the Navy seeks: a laser weapon compact enough to disable small drones. “The demand on ‘infinite duty cycle’ cooling by water chillers deteriorates causing limited operational employment,” the Navy said. “Relieving the design and alignment constraints of separating the systems and examining ‘rechargeable magazines’ for cooling and electrical power in the deployment of such kilowatt-class HEL systems may have benefits on small platforms (ground or airborne, including unmanned weapon platforms) and offers some unique research opportunities.”<div type="image" title="Amphibious transport dock ship USS Portland disabled an unmanned aerial vehicle with a solid state laser during a demonstration in 2020." height="1051" width="1576" msid="107895896" hostid="261" sizebytes="22800"></div>Rechargeable magazines could enable laser weapons to fire more shots before needing to cool down. “Today's HEL weapons operate on a limited duty cycle,” Iain Boyd, director of the Center for National Security Initiatives at the University of Colorado, told Business Insider. “They can be fired for a finite amount of time, then they spend a period of time offline while batteries recharge and the system cools down. If this project is successful, it may pave the way for longer duration HEL weapon applications, particularly on mobile platforms. So, there is a lot of potential.”However, Boyd also sees challenges to the project. “The desired power levels are relatively high, which means there will be a lot of heat released, which then requires additional cooling technologies integrated into the magazine clip. This means the size and weight of the system may become too large.”Lasers small enough to be mounted on aerial drones or unmanned ground vehicles could dramatically affect the battlefield. In particular, they can help mitigate the threat from swarms of drones or anti-ship missiles that can saturate current air defense systems. On the other hand, lasers have yet to prove themselves in combat. The US Navy wants rechargeable magazines for lasers to take out drones 

The government has ordered a probe into <keyword id="42747" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="Orion">Tata Motors</keyword>' Nexon EV fire incident in Mumbai, as the company was investigating the "isolated thermal incident". The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which was earlier tasked with investigating electric two-wheeler fire incidents by the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry, would lead the probe into Nexon EV fire too. The DRDO probe had found serious defects in the batteries. These defects occurred because the electric two-wheeler manufacturers like Okinawa Autotech, Pure EV, Jitendra Electric Vehicles, Ola Electric and Boom Motors may have used "lower-grade materials to cut costs". A <keyword id="7931165" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Nexon-EV" source="Orion">Tata Nexon EV</keyword> caught fire in Mumbai and the company said on Thursday a detailed investigation is currently being conducted to ascertain the facts of the recent isolated thermal incident that is doing the rounds on social media. The EV car fire incident was reported from Vasai West (near Panchvati hotel) in Mumbai late on Wednesday. "We will share a detailed response after our complete investigation. We remain committed to the safety of our vehicles and their users," the company said in a statement. <keyword id="2055885" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-nexon" source="Orion">Tata Nexon</keyword> EV is the highest selling electric car in India and at least 2,500-3,000 cars are being sold every month in the country. The company has so far sold over 30,000 EVs, most of which are Nexon models. "This is a first incident after more than 30,000 EVs have cumulatively covered over 100 million km across the country in nearly four years," said the company. As fires and explosions in electric two-wheelers continue unabated, the government is all set to introduce EV battery standards (BIS standards) for EV two-wheelers that will be expanded to four-wheelers at a later stage. The BIS standards for EV batteries will look into "size, connectors, specification and minimum quality of cells, the battery's capacity". Earlier, NITI Aayog in a discussion paper also stressed upon the need for BIS standards as the first step towards a national battery swapping policy. The automobile maker essentially wants to be sure of how the government is planning to set up the infrastructure required for EVs, which includes ample charging stations, battery swapping hubs and similar. Yamaha <a href="https://www.timesnownews.com/auto/bike-news/article/yamaha-considering-launching-electric-scooter-in-india-reports/773521">had revealed</a> that it is developing a new platform for EVs at its headquarters in Japan, that will be used for making the EVs for Indian and global markets. However, Yamaha has not revealed details about the launch yet. Fame II scheme aims to promote electrification of public and shared transportation through subsidies. About 7090 e-buses, 5 lakh e-3 wheelers, 55000 e-4 wheeler passenger cars and 10 lakh e-2 wheelers are likely to be supported through subsidies that will cut the price of EVs in India. The electric scooter market has seen considerable growth in recent years and is expected to grow as biggies like TVS and Bajaj have already launched their EVs while Hero and Suzuki have also announced their 2-wheeler EVs. Yamaha to launch its electric vehicle in India only after seeing a stable roadmap from the government

It is concerning that the companies issued the recall only after a warning from the union minister and highlights the quality control issues in the electric vehicle industry in the country.
