And some of these theories ended up being right on the money.</p><p>Insider spoke with cocreators and <keyword id="12971563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="showrunners" source="Orion">showrunners</keyword> Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson ahead of the wild "Yellowjackets" season finale, which aired on Sunday. (<a href="https://www.insider.com/yellowjackets-finale-explained-what-happened-showrunner-interview-2022-1">You can read our full, spoiler-filled debrief about all those twists and turns here.</a>) The duo divulged how they really feel about the surge of fan theories and teased what viewers can look forward to in future seasons (hint: expect Tori Amos songs at some point).</p><h2>Jackie seemingly died of exposure in 1996 — but that might not mean she's gone for good</h2><div type="image" title="Taissa, Shaun, and Jackie in the &quot;Yellowjackets&quot; finale" height="1193" width="2386" msid="88998003" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Libby Torres, Insider: So is this the last we're gonna see of Jackie? Can we expect to see her next season?</strong></p><p>Ashley Lyle, showrunner: I guess what we can say is that Jackie, not only as a person, but as a figure and a symbol, looms large for all of these women, particularly Shauna, and I don't think that that's going to change moving forward. In fact, it's going to deepen.</p><p>I think that this isn't necessarily the last that we've seen of Jackie, I'll put it that way.</p><h2>The show's killer soundtrack was a highlight of season 1. Expect even more excellence in season 2.</h2><p><strong>Are there any particular songs or artists we can expect in future seasons?</strong></p><p>Lyle: There are a few artists that we definitely want to find a good place for. I was just a huge Tori Amos stan when I was a teenager, and mark my words. We will get some Tori in there at some point.</p><h2>Season 2 will address a whole new set of questions</h2><p><strong>I saw in a <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1311716/how-yellowjackets-assembled-the-best-new-cast-on-tv">previous interview</a>, Ashley, that you said you wanted to answer certain questions in season one, and then raise some new ones. So what are the new questions that have been raised and that will hopefully be answered in season two?</strong></p><p>Lyle: I think the biggest new question that we ask is: What has Lottie been up to, and how does she play into what's going on in their lives? That is very much a question that we'll be exploring in season two.</p><div type="image" title="Lottie in the &quot;Yellowjackets&quot; finale" height="1179" width="2358" msid="88998005" hostid="261"></div><p>Bart Nickerson, showrunner: I think another one that we're all sort of curious to dig into and start exploring is: What does Shauna and Jeff's relationship look like moving forward? They seem to have really maybe seen each other for the first time in a very long time, obviously under less than perfect circumstances.</p><p><strong>In terms of questions you feel were answered in season one, are there any that you feel have been definitively answered, for good?</strong></p><p>Lyle: That's such an interesting question and I feel a very sort of instinctual reluctance to fully answer it just because you never, as a storyteller, wanna close a door. Even if you think that it's an absolute dead end, you never know what spark of inspiration you may have a couple weeks down the road.</p><p>A great example of that is that the character of Laura Lee was intended, in our original pitch, to die in the initial plane crash. And we really fell in love with not only the character, but Jane Widdop and their portrayal of Laura to such an extent that we decided that she needed to have a bigger part in what happens over the course of the first season. While that didn't fundamentally change any of the big story moves, it did have a really big impact on the girls' relationships.</p><p>Even though there are some paths that we don't necessarily intend to continue going down, you just never know.</p><h2>The fan theories are great — even the ones that are wrong — but also a little stressful</h2><p><strong>Zooming out a little bit, I'm sure you guys have seen that there's been such an amazing fan reaction to the show. Were you expecting this strong of a response while you were making it?</strong></p><p>Nickerson: Obviously, a part of you fantasizes about, "Everyone's gonna love this thing that we've been working so hard on." I don't think even I had the audacity to imagine that there would be this kind of engagement.</p><p>It's just been so fun to see it play out, the creativity and the talent that seems to have been tapped into online. Some of these theories are so elaborate, delicate, and well-researched. They're not right, but they're still cool.</p><p>Lyle: It's also a little terrifying. I feel like the more people engage, the higher the expectations, which is always a little bit anxiety producing.</p><p>But I think my favorite part, like Bart said, is the creativity — not just with all the theories, but there's been really incredible fan art. And I am buying all of it. I am a one woman cottage industry right now.</p><p><strong>In terms of the theories, has anyone ever predicted something that actually happened on the show, or that you were interested in pursuing?</strong></p><p>Lyle: I feel like at least one person has been either right or pretty close to right with almost everything. There were certainly people who caught on to Jeff at a certain point.</p><p>When Shauna's having her flashes right before she kills Adam, they are almost exclusively glimpses of things that we've already seen, with the exception of one frame. It's this very slight flash of teenage Shauna, right as she's about to dig Jackie out of the snow.</p><p>And so I noticed that <keyword id="11910046" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="reddit" source="Orion">Reddit</keyword> has very much caught onto that — there's a lot of theorizing, "It's a suitcase, it's where she put her journal," it's like all different things. And then there was one person who was like, "I think it's Jackie. I think they got into a fight and they wouldn't say that they were sorry. And she went outside and it snowed and she froze to death." And I was like, "Are you a member of the crew? Like you are very confident and you are very correct." And so I was just sort of delighted by that.</p><p>It was also interesting that it didn't pick up a lot of steam. Some people were like, "Yeah, maybe, but I think it's a suitcase." And I was like, oh my God, this is a trip.</p><p>Nickerson: It does seem like it's all been in the realm of where even when people are right, they're not so sure that it spoils the experience. When they turn out to be right, it's just like, "Oh yes, I called it," but it's not like, oh, they're angry that it was too easy. I do think it is also something that we'll probably have to be a little aware of moving forward.</p><p>I think it really shows maybe the hazard of leaving things hanging between seasons. Especially with how engaged Reddit is, if we tried to leave too much dangling between seasons, Reddit's gonna nail it like 10 times over, you know? And so closing things out, I think will become a necessity, as much as just a choice.</p><p><strong>People were so convinced that Adam was actually Javi, but with the way things ended with him, it seems like maybe he was just a regular guy. Were you dangling him out as a red herring? Or is there more to his story?</strong></p><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Melanie Lynskey on &quot;Yellowjackets&quot;" height="2133" width="2844" msid="88998007" hostid="261"></div><p>Lyle: I don't quite know how to answer that. I feel like red herring has taken on sort of a negative connotation, as though you're trying to trick the audience. What I will say is that we had this idea to put the viewer in Shauna's mindset and in the survivors' mindsets as much as humanly possible. To take their subjective experiences, the world, as it was shaped by their trauma, and try to impose that to some extent on the viewer's experience.</p><p>So her growing paranoia, her sort of false pattern recognition, those are all things that we wanted the audience to be experiencing as well. And the idea that people were very suspicious of Adam was certainly not an accident. Our goal was for Shauna — and the audience — to have these wild theories, because that's what kind of ends up happening to you.</p><p>It worked a little too well, I think. We did not anticipate people in episode three being like, "That's Javi, it's gotta be Javi." [laughs] You're like, "Holy shit."</p><p>It's something where I think we can learn from the experience of season one and seeing how closely people are watching. We're very, very deliberate in so many of the things that we do on this show and so many of the details of the characters, in their lives. It's great to see people paying that close attention, but, you know, ultimately there are gonna be a few things here or there that aren't necessarily breadcrumbs or clues and now sort of everything is being treated as such. So it's been pretty wild to watch that happen, honestly.</p><h2>One theory we can definitely debunk — Jackie is <em>not</em> a time traveler</h2><p><strong>Speaking of breadcrumbs, something I've really seen people just latch onto is Jackie's diary. And when Shauna's looking through it, and there are all these movies mentioned that came out after the plane crash. Was that a conscious decision to include these anachronistic films? If so, what does that mean for Jackie? Some people think she's a time traveler.</strong></p><p>Lyle: We can definitely say that Jackie is not a time traveler and Jackie is very dead at the end of the season.</p><div type="image" title="Jackie in the &quot;Yellowjackets&quot; finale" height="1152" width="2304" msid="88998009" hostid="261"></div><p>I think, though, that the guilt that all the characters carry with them, their complicity in Jackie's death, is something that really haunts everyone. What's interesting to me is that in episode six, we were kind of making very literal the fact that Shauna is haunted by her memories of Jackie, and her survivor's guilt has manifested in so many different ways that we've even seen already — in terms of her marrying Jeff, for example. We haven't necessarily fully dramatized it because to be perfectly honest, we did not necessarily think that people were going to screenshot things that were happening that quickly.</p><p>So it was a little bit of an Easter egg for ourselves. We imagined a world in which Shauna's guilt, especially in those early years, was manifesting in a way where she was trying to keep Jackie's spirit alive to some extent.</p><p><strong>One last question — what can you tell us, if anything, about season two? Have you guys started writing? How is Shauna's pregnancy going to go?</strong></p><p>Nickerson: We are in the very early days of the creation process. Spoilers are tough because we did pitch a multi-season plan that's still holding together pretty well. But a lot of the details of it and the specifics of it do have to shift and emerge. I think it's safe to say that Lottie will play a pretty significant role in what happens in season two.</p><p>Lyle: As Bart said, it's really hard to get into the specifics, but I will say that our intention is for things to get darker and wilder in season two. Make of that what you will.</p><p><strong>So does that mean Shauna's baby is gonna get eaten? I've seen lots of discussion online about that.</strong></p><div type="image" title="Ella Purnell, Sophie Nélisse, Alexa Barajas, and Keeya King on &quot;Yellowjackets.&quot;" height="600" width="1200" msid="88998010" hostid="261"></div><p>Lyle: People are fucked up, man. [laughs] Everyone went straight to baby eating.</p><p>Nickerson: I'm not saying we're going to do that, but also, how cool is that? That this is a season of a television show where that's in the realm of possibility.</p>

With only one surviving adult, and a whole lot of hormones, the team is forced to figure out how to survive in the Ontario forest before winter comes.</p><p>Viewers learn in one of the show's very first scenes that some surviving members of the team turned to cannibalism in order to stay alive in the wilderness — but who got eaten, who made the decision to feast on human flesh, and why haven't been revealed yet. The show also jumps forward in time to the present day, where several surviving Yellowjackets are now adults, but still grappling with the effects of the ordeal they endured 25 years prior.</p><p>But to categorize "Yellowjackets" as a mere survival epic, writing it off as simply a teen-girl version of "Lost" or "Lord of the Flies," would be doing it a massive disservice.</p><p>In addition to the horror elements, the show is also, at times, a psychological thriller (some of the adult Yellowjackets are being blackmailed by an unknown person who knows what they did to survive in the woods), a coming-of-age drama (even teen girls stranded in the wilderness can't escape hormonal urges), and, oddly enough, a love story (adult survivor Shauna's strained relationship with her husband, Jeff, is both fascinating and excruciating to observe).</p><p>Insider spoke with showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson ahead of the season finale to break down all the episode's biggest twists and turns, from Jackie's unexpected fate to Simone's disturbing discovery — and of course, that huge Lottie twist in the final moments.</p><p><em><strong>Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Sunday's "Yellowjackets" season finale, "Sic Transit Gloria Mundi."</strong></em></p><p><em><strong></strong></em></p><div type="image" title="Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci in &quot;Yellowjackets&quot;" height="1200" width="1600" msid="88952475" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Libby Torres, Insider: I just finished watching the finale, and I have so many questions. </strong><strong>But to start with the easy stuff — the show's use of music is so fantastic. <a href="https://twitter.com/yellowjackets96/status/1482352777917440008">That needle drop at the reunion!</a> </strong><strong>Have there been any songs that you wanted to use but you just couldn't get the rights?</strong></p><p>Ashley Lyle, showrunner: I think for the most part we actually got really fortunate. There were a couple that we almost didn't get and we wrote letters on occasion to really plead our case and why we felt it was just so perfect and so right to have a certain song in a certain place.</p><p>And we certainly had to get permission — a lot of different artists really wanted to see script pages. They wanted to see scenes. So there were a couple places where we got kind of nervous, cause we're like, "Okay, here you go. Our cannibalism show." And it was always a really delightful surprise when people said yes!</p><p>Bart Nickerson, showrunner: It was crazy. 'Cause like there were some scenes, you know, when it would come back that the band wanted to see the scene, we were just like, "Well, that might be it," but then we'd get a resounding yes. </p><p><strong>Probably the biggest reveal for me in the finale was that Lottie is seemingly the blackmailer of the surviving Yellowjackets in present-day. Does that mean that she's still alive? What's going on with her?</strong></p><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Lottie in the &quot;Yellowjackets&quot; finale" height="1172" width="2345" msid="88952479" hostid="261"></div><p>Lyle: I think everyone should buckle up to meet Lottie Matthews. I'll say that much.</p><p>Nickerson: I guess it's pretty clear, or mostly clear, that she survives, and I guess maybe, in a sort of twisted and warped way, has thrived since the rescue.</p><p><strong>Do you have another fabulous '90s actress lined up to play her in season two?</strong></p><p>Nickerson: We don't actually have someone cast yet. We're at the beginning of that process. But yeah, we definitely need to find somebody who is talented and dynamic. We just have such an incredible cast of skilled, sensitive, actors. We definitely need somebody that can hang at that level.</p><p>Lyle: That's gonna be a really interesting challenge. We have not cast anybody yet, but Courtney <em>[Eaton, who plays a teenage Lottie]</em> is very unique. She's unique in her spirit and her presence. She's unique in her heritage. And so we want to be very deliberate when it comes to casting an adult Lottie.</p><p><strong>I was absolutely shocked by Jackie dying from being out in the cold. I have so many questions about her last moments — like, the man that was talking to her in her vision. Was that the dead guy from the cabin?</strong></p><p>Lyle: Yes, he is the infamous dead cabin guy. I think that sequence — the "Jackie death dream sequence," as we referred to it — was one of our favorite scenes that we did all season. We wanted it to be moving, but deeply unsettling and really spooky.</p><div type="image" title="Jackie and Shauna in the &quot;Yellowjackets&quot; finale" height="1206" width="2413" msid="88952483" hostid="261"></div><p>And I think that Ella <em>[Purnell, who plays Jackie on "Yellowjackets"]</em> absolutely nailed her performance — the vulnerability, the relief that slowly gives way to fear. Everyone just did an absolute bang-up job on that scene and we were really, really happy with how it turned out.</p><p><strong>So was that just your run-of-the-mill death hallucination, or was it kind of trying to tie into the fact that there's clearly something supernatural going on in these woods?</strong></p><p>Nickerson: Well, that question of what was happening in that sort of space between life and death for Jackie — or was it Shauna's projection, like her subconscious becoming aware of what was happening? — what exactly is happening in that space really is like a fundamental question of the show that we are both exploring and learning about ourselves.</p><p>So, I don't know that it's possible to give a definitive answer. I don't mean that in a cagey way, I just mean that there are so many experiences that people have that are so difficult to interpret. Really at the end of the day, what it means for anything that is "supernatural" to be real is one that is both a litmus test for the individual character, and really for the individual members of the audience.</p><p><strong>Switching gears a little bit, Taissa's wife found some crazy shit in their basement. Was that Taissa's altar? Did she kill Biscuit? And also there's this suggestion that Taissa kind of goes into this fugue state sometimes — anything you can say about that?</strong></p><p>Nickerson: I think it's fair to say that the altar was created by Taissa's body, we'll say. And then I think this question of the fugue state and to what extent she has any sort of agency within that, I think will continue to be a question that is played with.</p><p>I would submit that she wasn't fully conscious of what she was doing in the creation of the altar, but we do have the moment at the end of the finale where we see the revelation, that there's the connection between what we'll just call the darkness, and her win in the election. The realization of that connection is gonna be a problem that she's gonna have to sort out for herself in the next season.</p><div type="image" title="Adult Taissa in the &quot;Yellowjackets&quot; finale" height="1165" width="2331" msid="88952485" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Did Misty kill Jessica Roberts, or is Jessica just incapacitated?</strong></p><p>Lyle: No, she's dead. Misty very much killed her, yeah.</p><p><strong>That was what I thought, but sometimes things can be ambiguous! So I just wanted to double check she was dead.</strong></p><p>Nickerson: Yeah, no. I will just say, I think it is fair to question everything. Because we are definitely a show that wants to play with subjectivity and ambiguity, for sure.</p><p>Lyle: I think too, though, it's important to point out that our goal is to never leave the audience hanging fully. I mean, obviously, there's some cliffhangers at the end of this season, but if we ask big questions that have answers, we intend to give them. 'I think it's fair to question everything': 'Yellowjackets' showrunners break down Jackie's fate, that Lottie twist, and more major moments in the season finale

<ul class="summary-list"><li>One of the biggest mysteries on Showtime's "Yellowjackets" revolves around a mystery symbol.</li><li>Insider asked the series' cocreators and showrunners the symbol's meaning at PaleyFest.</li></ul><p>One of the biggest unanswered questions on "<a href="https://insider.com/category/yellowjackets">Yellowjackets</a>" revolves around a mysterious symbol.</p><p>The Showtime drama, currently in its second season, follows a girls' soccer team that gets stranded in the wilderness after their plane goes down and the fallout of the traumatic event 25 years later.</p><p>A mystery symbol, which resembles a human figure with a line through it and a hook underneath, has appeared in both the past and present timelines. More than a dozen episodes into the series, we still know very little about its meaning. Fan theories have postulated it's everything from <a href="https://screenrant.com/yellowjackets-show-symbol-meaning-theories-explained" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a relic to ward off evil spirits</a> to a <a href="https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/yellowjackets-symbol-theory-cinnabar-mercury-poisoning">possible map to a mining shaft</a>.</p><p>Insider asked some of the series' cast and its creators about the symbol during a red carpet event for the Showtime series at PaleyFest in early April — and I got a particularly interesting response from coshowrunners and executive producers Jonathan Lisco, Ashley Lyle, and Bart Nickerson when I showed them I had it drawn on my hand.</p><p>When asked what they could divulge about the symbol, Lisco joked that he was "actually very nervous" that I had it drawn on my hand. "But we can't tell you why," he teased. Lyle chimed in that she'd seen online "Yellowjackets" fans who had even gotten permanent tattoos of the mysterious symbol.</p><p>"I'm like, 'You don't know what that means,'" Lyle said. Melanie Lynskey, who plays adult Shauna, wasn't sure what she could share with us.</p><p>Meanwhile, Warren Kole, who plays Shauna's husband Jeff, told Insider of the symbol: "That's a mystery. I haven't even bothered myself trying to figure that out." <ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "Yellowjackets."</li><li>During a PaleyFest panel for the Showtime series, a fan asked about the mysterious "man with no eyes."</li></ul><p>The "<a href="https://insider.com/category/yellowjackets">Yellowjackets</a>" showrunners finally opened up about one of the show's biggest mysteries: The man with no eyes. </p><p>During a Monday night <a href="https://www.paleycenter.org/events/paleyfest-2023/">PaleyFest</a> panel comprised of the series' three showrunners and a dozen cast members, a fan asked if there was anything the group could share about the creepy character who Taissa (Tawny Cypress) briefly catches sight of in a mirror on the show's third episode, "The Dollhouse."</p><div type="image" title="Yellowjackets 103, man with no eyes" height="522" width="822" msid="99236562" hostid="261"></div><p>After a rousing murmur of anticipation from the Dolby Theatre crowd, showrunner and executive producer Bart Nickerson said, "Absolutely not, next question," eliciting laughter from fans.</p><p>Not accepting that response, Cypress unexpectedly got up out of her chair on stage and said, "We all want to know."</p><p>After 10 seconds of applause from the crowd, the showrunners gave in and discussed the mystery character, played by Brahm Taylor, for the next two-and-a-half minutes.</p><div type="image" title="Yellowjackets PaleyFest panel" height="3024" width="4032" msid="99236563" hostid="261"></div><p>The hit series, currently in its second season, follows a girls' soccer team whose plane crashes in the wild with no rescue in sight and the fallout 25 years later of those who survived the ensuing chaos as the group tried to make their way back home. </p><p>The "man with no eyes" has most noticeably appeared in the show's third episode of its first season as Tai's grandmother was dying. However, he also appeared briefly during a speech Taissa gave later in season one, popping up among a group of journalists. </p><p>It's much easier to catch the eyeless man weekly in the show's <a href="https://youtu.be/X6X2uEAbzJs?t=78">title sequence in the woods</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Yellowjackets Man With No Eyes" height="1502" width="2612" msid="99236564" hostid="261"></div><p>Coshowrunner and executive producer Ashley Lyle stepped in to give some insight into the creepy nightmare fuel man who may be plaguing some fans' dreams.</p><p>"All I'm going to say about the man with no eyes is that we see in the first season that Tai has lived as this person who's based her life on pragmatism," Lyle said. "I personally believe that she would define herself as an atheist, if not, an agnostic."</p><p>"And yet as a young child, she had this incredibly informative, traumatic experience when her grandmother, who she was very close to, was close to death and had this sort of terrifying moment where she was anticipating, you know, the transition to the next life and expecting sort of angels and trumpets and instead had a terrifying vision," Lyle continued, referencing how Tai sees a glimpse of the man in a mirror.</p><p>Lyle said the figure's inclusion wasn't random, adding she's done a lot of research on the visions people have in their final moments.</p><p>"I've gone down the rabbit hole of things like near-death experiences and there are a lot of threads about hospice nurses and what people do in their last moments. And, I've lost a lot of sleep because of it because it's a not uncommon experience that people will see something... disturbing," Lyle said.</p><div type="image" title="&quot;Yellowjackets&quot; showrunners and executive producers Jonathan Lisco, Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson at PaleyFest 2023" height="4032" width="3024" msid="99236565" hostid="261"></div><p>"And so I think that for Taissa, who's very much not in touch with her spiritual self, and very much not in touch with her ability to believe, or, her faith, there's this sort of symbolic character of, you know, you could look at him as death incarnate," Lyle said of the man.</p><p>At that point, Cypress jumped in to say that's how she views the man with no eyes as well, adding that "he's been cut out of scenes," implying that fans were maybe supposed to see more of the character.</p><p>When it comes to the mystery unnamed character, Lyle boiled it down to two words.</p><p>"I think what he represents is 'the unknown' and the unknown is something that Taissa is very uncomfortable with as a character," Lyle said. "And we will dig further into that."</p><p>"You will rue this day," Nickerson added.</p><p><a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/yellowjackets-renewed-season-3-1235462568/">Renewed for a third season in 2022</a>, the showrunners told Insider on the PaleyFest red carpet that "none of" the next season is writtten yet. We're always a little reluctant to set things in stone because what's most important to us is telling the right amount of story.
