A liquor sale queue management app in Kerala beat all other Indian food and drink apps in 2020

The <keyword id="68884" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="telangana" source="Orion">Telangana</keyword> government has increased the <keyword id="6356212" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liquor" source="Orion">liquor</keyword> prices by 20 to 25 per cent to mop up revenues. Prices of all brands of liquor were hiked and this is expected to help the government generate additional revenues of Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 7,000 crore annually. The state had earned Rs 30,000 crore from liquor sales in 2021-22 with the tax income reported at Rs 12,000 crore The authorities have increased the price of 1,000 ml liquor by Rs 120. The price has gone up to Rs 615 from Rs 495 earlier. The price of a quarter bottle has been hiked by Rs 20. On all types of beer, there was a minimum hike of Rs 10 per bottle. The new prices will come into effect from Thursday. The excise officials checked the liquor stocks at wine shops, bars and pubs on Wednesday night after the day's sales came to an end. The available stocks will be sold at new rates from Thursday. The liquor prices have been hiked for the first time since liquor policy 2021-23 came into effect. Liquor prices were last hiked in the state in May 2020 soon after the first phase of Covid-19 lockdown. This has come at a time when the state is facing a fund crunch to continue its welfare schemes as the Centre has tightened norms on loans and market borrowings. This is the latest in a series of measures taken by the state government to mop its revenues. However, it will have a major negative impact on sentiment,” said Amrit Kiran Singh, Executive Chairman, International Spirits and Wines Association of India’ (ISWAI). The ISWAI represents liquor companies like Diageo – United Spirits, Pernod Ricard, Moet Hennessy, Beam Suntory, Bacardi, and many more. Singh believes that the move will be detrimental to the liquor companies as duty free is an additional source of business for them. “The proposed move of reducing the duty free allowance from 2 Litres to 1 litre will break the back of this channel as over 75% of this channel is contributed by alcoholic beverages. Reducing 75% of this channel by 50% will break the back of this channel,” he said. The Ministry has recommended the move to bring India’s duty free allowance at par with airports around the world. However, industry experts believe that it is unfair to compare the duty free allowance of India with other countries as India has the highest Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on alcoholic beverages at 150%. “China is less than 30%. Companies therefore use the Duty Free channel to launch their upmarket brands. Duty Free allows potential customers to try the new brand at a lower price (due to zero duties) and then buy it at full price (with 150%) duty if they like the brand. It, therefore, plays an important role in stimulating demand in the local economy,” said Singh. Indian liquor makers and airports are in low spirits over duty free shopping restrictions

The ongoing election for the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament, has had an unintended consequence. The country's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, is fast running out of beer. In January 2019, chief minister Yogi Adityanath <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/politics/uttar-pradesh-government-to-impose-0-5-gau-kalyan-cess-for-cow-protection-1843661.htm" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">imposed a 0.5% cess on alcohol</a> to fund the state's cow protection programme. Every time there is a change in taxation, the retail price changes, and so does the label on the product. Every brand has to get an approval for these changes from the excise department before releasing the product into the market. "Every April, new policy gets into force. Every time you get into it, there is a delay of about a month because they re-register all the labels. The files go up and down. It's an annual process which is really painful. But everybody knows about it, so they keep extra stock for these incidences. This year that process has got further delayed," the owner of a renowned national chain of bars told Business Insider on the condition of anonymity. High UP in the air The approval process is common to every state in India, but the delay is the longest in Uttar Pradesh (UP), according to him. In UP, the delay has been thrice as long this time as the excise department officials were busy with election duties, delaying approvals on new labels . So, if you walk into a bar or a wine shop anywhere in Uttar Pradesh today, very few brands are available, and most of them strong beers. This is an additional blow for bar owners because most people in India who drink at bars prefer milder beers.  This is a cumulative effect of a price hike, supply crunch in beer as a whole, and the non-availability of mild beer brands. "The new gau raksha (cow protection) tax is ₹5 per bottle of beer. It is quite severe considering beer is 95% water," he added. In India, beer consumed outside home is three and a half times more than the beer consumed at home. Perishing stocks What is worse for suppliers in the state, nearly 100,ooo litres of expired beer was destroyed in April. The stock was worth ₹3 crore (about $440,000). "Beer is the only perishable liquor. By law, you have to quarantine it and the excise guys come and destroy it," he added. The wait to bring new stocks to shelves could be longer as excise officials will only get back to their usual drill after the election, the results of which will be announced on May 23. An Indian state is fast running out of beer due to the ongoing election

New Delhi, June 2 (IANSlife) Even under normal circumstances, alcohol products are among those which remain under the continuous threat of counterfeiting. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the problem has further aggravated due to a gap in demand and supply. In last one month, almost every day a seizure had been reported in India related to smuggled or illicit liquor. There is always a risk of human life-consuming illicit alcohol. As per the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, harmful alcohol consumption resulted in over 3 million deaths in 2016, and most of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Counterfeiters ape the packaging of popular branded products to dupe customers into buying their fake, substandard, or bad quality products. But there are simple ways by which you can identify genuine liquor products. Chander S Jeena, Secretary of Authentication Solution Providers' Association (ASPA), a non-profit organization working towards building up authentication eco-systems in-country, lists down a few: Choose authorized sellers: Try to buy only from authorized sellers (retail) shop. Do not fall prey to online delivery of alcohol advertisements. Insist for a proper bill for your purchase. If there is online delivery system, please re-verify it from state excise website. Look closely at the packaging: Always pay close attention to the packaging. Counterfeiters can produce a close copy, but they mostly cannot perfect it. Usually, there are visible differences in the size, logo, and colors used in packaging. This difference might be as small as the text that is being used or a slight change in the logo. A regular user with a keen eye might spot it in an instance. For example: Names such as Johnnie Walker should be with an 'ie' and not a 'y' and Chivas Regal would suddenly be turned into Chivas Rigal. Never accept a product that might seems previously been opened. These features are generally missing from fake make-up products. Smudged labels also indicate that the product is counterfeit. Check for Government Tax stamps (Authentication signs): The most important is check for authentication features. These are extremely difficult to copy and replicate for counterfeiter. Most of the liquor bottles carry anti-counterfeiting features called tax stamps on neck of their bottle (For example, security hologram or paper label with QR code). These are placed to ensure that the product is original and untampered. One can verify these codes from state excise website or via mobile app. For instance, Delhi has one such "mLiquorSaleCheck". Check the manufacturing and expiry date: The scariest part about fake alcohol is how vendors would buy back empty real bottles from bars and clubs, then fill those bottles with the contraband liquid. If the date seems to be way too long ago, then that is likely a recycled bottled. Before consumption check for shade, colour and smell: Beware of inconsistency in texture, smell, and colour of the product. These are indicators if the product is fake or original. A responsible-reputed brand would never compromise on quality. Generally, alcohol smells strong, spicy, woody or fruity depending on the type you purchase. Denver is the most densely populated city in the state and has reported 125 cases as of Monday out of Colorado's 591 cases. Across the state, 58 people have been hospitalized and, as of Monday, six people have died.People in Denver are allowed to leave their home for essential needs, which is limited to grocery shopping or picking up medicine. Exercising outside is also OK, such as running, hiking, and walking dogs, he said, as long as people are staying at least six feet apart. Denver is closing its playgrounds but is not closing its park.However, police will be patrolling and stopping people if they are seen outside. The mayor did not mention what the penalties are if they are caught outside doing something other than the approved essential activities.Denver has also increased the types of businesses classified as nonessential.For instance, liquor stores and recreational marijuana stores are now considered nonessential and will be forced to close by Tuesday at 5 p.m. Yet medical marijuana stores are considered essential and will stay open.Restaurants will still be allowed to provide take-out meals and alcoholic beverages.
