So, in 2015, Mattel conducted a consumer study to understand the market's perception of the brand and the reason behind this dip in sales. Its latest report from March 2021 says that Hasbro, Mattel, and Jakks Pacific are the top five global toy players. The toy industry is poised to grow at a CAGR of over 4% during 2019-2025, adding $30 billion in revenue. <br /><br />Over the years, the 60-year-old brand Barbie adapted to changing times with expanded career options, broader representation across race, nationality, and body type, and the latest styles. Now, it has started making its marketing communication more inclusive. As a result, Barbie hit $1.5 billion in revenue in 2020. Barbie’s global campaign reminds us how kids playing with dolls can aid in developing empathy and generosity at an early age

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Mattel just announced a new Barbie doll with Down syndrome.</li><li>Model Ellie Goldstein, who has Down syndrome, shared her excitement about the doll's release.</li></ul><p>Mattel just announced it will be releasing a Barbie doll with Down syndrome in its latest effort to be more inclusive.</p><p>Ellie Goldstein, a model who also has Down syndrome, shared her excitement over the newest Barbie, saying that when she first saw the doll, she "felt so emotional, and proud."</p><p>"It means a lot to me that children will be able to play with the doll and learn that everyone is different," Goldstein wrote in an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/CrdjSkMAMXq/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=96f11bbe-6262-4be7-a22d-a13738f6ae21">Instagram post</a> shared on Tuesday.</p> <p>Goldstein, who was also chosen by the company to appear in a campaign announcing the newest doll, continued by saying that "diversity is important as people need to see more people like me out there in the world and not be hidden away."</p><p>"Barbie will help make this happen," she continued.</p><div type="image" title="barbie's 2023 lineup of fashionista dolls" height="2125" width="2834" msid="99769801" hostid="261"></div><p>Mattel worked with the National Down Syndrome Society to design the doll. According to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/mattel-introduces-barbie-doll-with-downs-syndrome-2023-04-25/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a>, the new Barbie's face is a rounder shape, has almond-shaped eyes, smaller ears, and a flat nasal bridge. </p><p>"The doll's palms even include a single line, a characteristic often associated with those with Down syndrome," <a href="https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/mattel-introduces-barbie-doll-with-downs-syndrome-2023-04-25/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mattel said</a>.</p><p>The doll, which is currently available for preorder in the United Kingdom, also has a shorter frame and longer torso than the other dolls in its Fashionista collection.</p><p>The doll wears a floral-patterned dress that pays homage to the colors typically associated with Down syndrome awareness, as well as a pink necklace with three upward chevrons representing the three copies of the 21st chromosome and pink ankle foot orthotics.</p><p>This is just the <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-barbie-dolls-changed-evolution-2018-3">latest step that Mattel is taking</a> to make its Barbies more inclusive.</p><p>In September, the company launched a line in the UK that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barbie-dolls-hearing-aids-prosthetic-legs-wheelchairs-body-diversity-mattel-2022-8">featured dolls with hearing aids and prosthetic limbs</a>. The company has also brought out dolls that have wheelchairs and varying body types, as well as new skin colors and hair textures. </p><p>"Our goal is to enable all children to see themselves in Barbie, while also encouraging children to play with dolls who do not look like themselves," Lisa McKnight, the executive vice president and global head of Barbie and Dolls at Mattel, said in <a href="https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/mattel-introduces-barbie-doll-with-downs-syndrome-2023-04-25/">a statement</a>.</p>

Model Ellie Goldstein celebrates the first Barbie doll with Down syndrome: 'People need to see more people like me'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Amy Jandrisevits, a former social worker, started making <keyword id="9450" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dolls">dolls</keyword> about five years ago for <keyword id="6354493" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="children">children</keyword> with physical differences.</li><li>The dolls, she said, help children cope with their differences and "see how beautiful they are." </li><li>Since the small online business became a nonprofit last spring, 400 people have commissioned her to make dolls that look like a child in their lives.</li></ul><p>Amy Jandrisevits has always kept dolls.</p><p>As a child, she played with them. And as an adult working as a social worker in oncology settings in Wisconsin, she used them to make it easier for worried children to express their feelings. </p><p>But she ran into a problem. For many of the children she was working with, there weren't always dolls available that looked like them.</p><p>For children who don't see themselves represented in the world, it can be isolating, Jandrisevits explained.</p><p>"You think of a child of color and you throw in some sort of medical difference — like being bald or having scars — the likelihood of you finding a doll that represents that is out of the question," Jandrisevits told Business Insider. </p><p>After she had her own children, Jandrisevits left her job as a social worker and has started using her doll-making skills to fill a gap she saw in the toy market. For the last five years, she has worked with the parents of children who have uncommon physical differences to make dolls that bear the same uniqueness that they do. </p><p>At first, families purchased the dolls at $100 each.</p><p><div type="image" title="Keagan" height="6720" width="4480" msid="75837487" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Last year, though, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/nannysbabiestoodollslikeme/">A Doll Like Me</a> became a nonprofit. Now, the cost of making each doll is covered through donations made to the organization, Jandrisevits said. </p><p>Since last spring, she's already made around 400 dolls at no cost to families, she said. </p><p>"I don't think this is something people should have to pay for. It should be a gift to the family from a stranger," Jandrisevits said. "All these parents want is for someone to see the same beautiful child they do."</p><h2>It all started when an acquaintance asked Jandrisevits to make a doll that looked like her daughter, an amputee </h2><p>The first "Doll Like Me" that Jandrisevits made was for an acquaintance. The woman had heard that Jandrisevits knew how to sew and asked her to make a doll that looked like her daughter, who's leg had been amputated.</p><p>That process taught Jandrisevits about the gap in the market. Though missing limbs are somewhat common, dolls featuring them are far and few between.</p><p>After that first project, word spread and she made a few more dolls, including one for a Chinese child with albinism.</p><p>Eventually, someone shared a photo of a child and their doll, and hundreds of parents started reaching out to Jandrisevits to ask for their own.</p><p>She's since been commissioned to make dolls featuring all kinds of differences, including cleft palates, rare skin diseases, and other anomalies. </p><p>She gets hundreds of messages on Facebook, many of them from parents saying, "I want my child to see how beautiful they are," Jandrisevits said.<strong><br /></strong></p><p>Jandrisevits said she loves that she can use her skillset to fill a need in society and feels grateful to have met so many families in the process. </p><p>After receiving their dolls, parents will send Jandrisevits photos and videos of their children opening them. Some even send her updates years later about how the doll has had a positive impact on the child's personality, she said.</p><p>One of the first dolls that Jandrisevits made was for a girl named Hope, whose hand developed unusually. Hope's parents took a video of her opening her doll. When Hope saw that she and the doll had the same hand, she wept, Jandrisevits said.</p><p>"It was the first time she'd seen herself in something. Her eyes go to the doll's hand and she sobs into the doll," Jandrisevits said.</p><p>Hope, who is now a teenager, is still in contact with Jandrisevits. </p><p>"It was crazy because someone shared the video and I got 200 orders in two months. And that was only for dolls with limb differences," she said. "I've never done advertising. I've never had to. I've never been at a place where I'm on top of orders." </p><p><div type="image" title="hope a doll like me" height="405" width="540" msid="75837490" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Another child Jandrisevits met virtually through A Doll Like Me was Sophia Weaver, of  North Carolina. Weaver had Rett Syndrome, a rare genetic neurological and developmental disorder that affects brain development and leads to the decline of language, breathing, walking, motor, and social skills. </p><p>Weaver was viciously bullied online. People had repurposed photos of the child, which were originally posted with the intention of bringing positive attention and awareness to her rare condition, to advocate for abortion — using the young girl's condition as an example of why the procedures are needed.</p><p>From there, she became the subject of severe online abuse, leading to her mother to successfully campaign for Twitter to change its policy to include disability harassment in its reporting tools. Weaver died last May. She was 10 years old. </p><p>Jandrisevits said that making Weaver's doll, knowing that the girl would likely not live much longer, took an emotional toll. She knew that the doll would likely mean a lot to the family after she passed on and wanted to get it right.</p><p>"Her brother and sister have been using the doll for their therapy," Jandrisevits said. </p><p>"This is why a doll like me is not a factory," Jandrisevits added. "These kids are not a checklist. It's not, 'check the box if you need a hand missing or a leg missing.'  It becomes a relationship." </p><p><div type="image" title="hayden foot brace A Doll Like Me" height="960" width="540" msid="75837492" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>Jandrisevits never imagined her handmade projects would attract this level of attention. Now she hopes it will change the market.</h2><p>Jandrisevits remembers the day two years ago when her daughter Kalea, now 4, saw Cinderella for the first time and said she wished she looked like her. </p><p>Kalea is blonde and has blue eyes. Unlike many children, there is always a doll that looks like her, Jandrisevits said.</p><p>While there are exceptions — like American Girl — most mainstream toy brands are still making dolls that are either peach or brown, with few options in between, Jandrisevits said.</p><p>"Most kids don't look like my Kalea. She can go into any Target and see herself everywhere. She was two when she said she wished she looked like Cinderella," Jandrisevits said. "How do you ever expect these kids to develop any sort of confidence and love of their body if this is our mentality?"</p><p>Since A Doll Like Me started attracting attention from blogs and on social media, it has been included in a toy fair in Germany and will be an example used in a soon-to-be-released book about product <keyword id="528822" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Inclusion">inclusion</keyword>, Jandrisevits said.</p><p>She is amazed by how popular such a simple idea has become and hopes that the toy industry will become more inclusive in the future.</p><p>"We all have these skillsets, and you'd hope that they use to advance a cause or an issue," Jandrisevits said. A former Wisconsin social worker makes custom dolls for children with physical differences so they can finally 'see how beautiful they are'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Gen Alpha tweens are driving a surge in skincare sales, spending significantly in Sephora stores.</li><li>Gen Alphas that BI spoke with weren't convinced antiaging was behind their enthusiasm.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-generation-alpha-how-shop-spend-education-work-live-2024-1">Gen Alpha</a> is fueling sales in skincare, with many tweens blowing their pocket money on expensive cosmetics.</p><p>It could be that they are just the latest generation plagued by worries of aging, made all the worse by social media.</p><p>Gen Alpha tweens who spoke with Business Insider are unconvinced that fear of aging is behind their new obsession. They simply love the feel of the products and the act of comparing their new purchases with one another.</p><p>But skincare and marketing experts point to body image, social media's emphasis on antiaging, and targeted ads as possible reasons driving the trend, as well as the insecurities of the generations above trickling down and shaping the mental health of the youngest age group.</p><h2 id="d9c21822-89d1-4edc-b8ee-7af5ab06077e">Gen Alpha's spending power</h2><p>By all accounts, Gen Alpha is going to be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biggest-luxury-buyers-gen-y-z-alpha-2023-2">a mighty generation of big spenders</a>.</p><p>They're already getting started. Instead of gloopy, bright pink Barbie makeup and garish colorful eyeshadow palettes that millennials and some Gen Zers bought growing up, Gen Alphas — aged 14 and under — are saving up for cosmetics that set them back $50-$100 each or more.</p><p>Earlier this year, <a target="_blank" href="https://nielseniq.com/global/en/landing-page/campaign-landing-page/gen-alpha-skin-care/">a report by the consumer behavior data company NIQ</a> found that 49% of the mass growth in skincare sales in 2023 in the US was driven by Gen Alpha. US households with tweens aged between six and 12 grew their skincare sales by 27.2% that year, the report found.</p><p>On TikTok, "Sephora" tweens have been enraging older generations, who claim kids are buying up all the sought-after products, clogging up the aisles, and messing up displays.</p><p>This has culminated in them earning the slightly disparaging label of "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sephora-kids-gen-alpha-tiktok-trend-explained-2024-1">10-year-old girls in Sephora"</a> as millennials and Zoomers brandish them as "insane" and "out of control."</p><p>But Gen Alpha skincare enthusiasts are taking their newfound habit seriously.</p><p>Janice Miller, a VP at the marketing agency The Bliss Group, told BI her 13-year-old daughter and friends spend "a huge amount of money" on skincare products at Sephora and Ulta Beauty.</p><p>"She gets up an hour before I do to do her skincare regimen in the morning, and she also has a regimen at night and never misses it," Miller said.</p><p>When Miller asked her daughter what she likes about buying skincare, she said she started getting interested in it because she had acne a couple of years ago. It cleared up after visiting a dermatologist, who recommended special creams, as well as medicated sunscreen and moisturizer. After seeing the effects, she was hooked.</p><p>"Whenever there's a special occasion, I ask my parents to get me products, and my friends also give me products, and we sometimes trade," she said. "I had about $1,000 saved up last year, but I've spent most of it on products, so I don't have any money left."</p><p>Jenny Grant Rankin, an educational researcher and author, told BI her 14-year-old daughter, Piper Virginia Rankin, also spends all her money on skincare.</p><p>Piper told BI she started getting interested in it when she was 11, from family, friends, and social media, and now her routine makes her feel "comfortable, confident, and hygienic."</p><p>Usually, she gets her recommendations from her peers on social media, she said.</p><h2 id="0329de26-82b2-48e4-8a17-0b0bfbcb3533">Antiaging products</h2><p>Medical and marketing experts are noticing a skincare boom, too.</p><p>Valerie Aparovich, a certified cosmetologist-aesthetician and the science team lead at the skincare product scanner OnSkin, told BI there has been "unprecedented Gen Alpha engagement" on the app this year.</p><p>Aparovich said she has seen Gen Alpha girls posting "get ready with me" videos on YouTube and TikTok, where they show off and recommend the skincare products they use.</p><p>Shayan Cheraghlou, a resident physician at NYU School of Medicine, told BI skincare is a "huge trend" that he has observed at pediatric dermatology clinics, but with a concerning side effect.</p><p>"I've seen kids using expensive vitamin C serums that are completely unnecessary for their age group," he said, as well as some antiaging products, such as retinol, that can damage young skin.</p><p>There isn't a simple answer to why anyone aged 14 and under is interested in antiaging products.</p><p>Miller and Rankin's daughters both said antiaging wasn't something they thought about during their beauty hauls. It may be that young consumers don't understand the difference between the products that are beneficial and the ones that aren't.</p><p>However, a recent study by the wellness brand Thorne and YouGov looked into Gen Alpha's sentiment around aging. The survey of nearly 3,000 respondents included 537 US-based 13- to 17-year-olds who were asked about antiaging, skincare, and beauty.</p><p>The study found that 15% of the Gen Alpha kids felt depressed about aging and that 51% of them would spend more than $100 a month to slow or combat aging, compared to 24% of millennials and 15% of Gen Z.</p><p>Gen Alphas surveyed were also four times more worried about wrinkles and fine lines than other generations.</p><h2 id="1c770c18-fdbc-4436-aebb-f79fe15a11a0">Where influences lie</h2><p>It may be that Gen Alpha kids are learning from their parents as children of millennials and Gen Zers.</p><p>Zoomers under age 30 are helping drive <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/botox-injections-fillers-plastic-surgery-gen-z-social-media-filters-2024-5">demand for injectables such as filler and Botox</a>, BI's Eve Upton-Clark reported, with tweakments being the latest status symbol. The number of Botox injections in the US, in particular, jumped by 73% between 2019 and 2022.</p><p>It's "worth noting" that millennials were the ones to popularize "get ready with me" content and makeup tutorials on social media, Dr. Geeta Yadav, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder of FACET Dermatology, told BI.</p><p>She said she thinks children in Gen Alpha have been influenced by content creators and their older relatives, similar to how Y2K fashion is having a resurgence.</p><p>Dr. Yadav said she thinks there is some component of anxiety regarding aging with this trend, and older generations could be partially to blame.</p><p>"Those who came of age in the early 00s and before were subjected to horribly aggressive and demeaning beauty standards, which damaged a lot of women's self-esteem and self-image," she said.</p><p>Learning not to pass along that messaging, which is deeply ingrained, can be incredibly difficult, she added.</p><p>There have been positive shifts regarding beauty standards, more size inclusivity, and young consumers demanding more skin tone diversity and range with their products. But "aging is one hurdle that we have yet to cross," Dr. Yadav said, especially with so many advances in skincare that make people look younger for longer.</p><p>"As millennials continue to age and continue to obsess about looking young, that can send a very loud message to Gen Alpha about aging and beauty standards," she said.</p><p>Alexandra Forsyth, a consumer retail and cyber security expert at AFRG, told BI she doesn't believe Gen Alphas are particularly interested in antiaging, but brands are pushing their messaging onto them.</p><p>"This raises eyebrows but also prompts serious questions about the influences shaping this young generation," she said.</p><p>Forsyth said children, sometimes as young as seven or eight, are posting about their skincare routines. Some tweens <a target="_blank" href="https://mashable.com/article/sephora-tweens-teens-drunk-elephant">spoke with Mashable about their adult skincare habits</a>, and one, named Maeve, suggested the fad was more about having what everyone else has.</p><p>"I didn't know I wanted it, and then when I see that someone else has it and how they use it, I realize it's something I'd actually use a lot," she said.</p><p>So it may be that they're doing much of the heavy lifting of marketing campaigns themselves.</p><p>"It's not necessarily that they're looking toward older people to influence them," Forsyth said. "They're influencing each other."</p>

Gen Alpha tweens are fueling sales in skincare. It isn't just because they are worried about wrinkles. 

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Carlo Allegri/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Supermodels like Gisele Bundchen have been the ideal for beauty for decades.</p></div><p></p></div></div>For decades, leggy supermodels were the ultimate ideal of feminine beauty. </p><p>Designer brands all over the world relied on statuesque characters like Kate Moss, Gisele Bundchen, and Heidi Klum to sell apparel. </p><p>But now, a shift toward "real" beauty is challenging American conventions, and retailers are taking note. </p><p>Consumers are clearly demonstrating that they like seeing people in advertisements who aren't traditional models cast by an agency.</p><p>American Eagle's lingerie brand Aerie has, in particular, been a champion of this idea. The brand has become famous for a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aerie-ad-photos-are-not-airbrushed-2015-7" target="_blank">Photoshop-free advertising campaign</a> which debuted in<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aerie-lingerie-ads-without-photoshop-2014-11" target="_blank"> 2014</a>. </p><p>Now, Aerie is taking things a step further. </p><p>In its most recent campaign, Share Your Spark, the company featured numerous women who <em>aren't</em> models. Some models, like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/meet-iskra-lawrence-aerie-role-model-2015-8" target="_blank">Aerie spokes model Iskra Lawrence</a> and popular curvy model Barbie Ferreira are featured, but the campaign also features a bevy of designers, bloggers, and "regular people".</p><p>The idea is that women don't need to be classified as models to be beautiful. </p><p>Consumers are clearly buying into the idea; i<span>n Aerie's most recent quarter, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/american-eagles-aerie-sales-2016-5" target="_blank">comparable sales soared 32%</a><span>.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Aerie</span></p><p class="caption">Aerie's Share Your Spark campaign.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Many other retailers are also capitalizing on a more inclusive version of beauty. </p><p>Even Barbie, the Mattel toy often criticized for its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/barbie-doll-with-real-womans-measurements-2013-7" target="_blank">unrealistic proportions</a>,  now comes in a more <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/new-barbie-body-types-2016-1" target="_blank">curvy version</a> reminiscent of a "real" woman. </p><p> </p><p>And recently, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fashion-company-lets-the-internet-choose-models-race-and-body-types-2016-8" target="_blank">Chris Weller of Tech Insider </a>reported that up-and-coming fashion brand Orin announced it would let its customers decide what sorts of models they'd see for two weeks - with variables from race to size and more.</p><p>The company will also crowdsource what sort of products consumers would like to see, what factory workers will get paid during the process, and where the merchandise will be made, too.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Protein World</span></p><p class="caption">This Protein World advertisement got heat from consumers.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>When women are told that they need to look a certain way, they revolt.</p><p>Look no further than <a href="http://www.today.com/style/protein-worlds-are-you-beach-body-ready-ads-spark-backlash-t29671" target="_blank">Protein World's "Are You Beach Body Ready?" campaign</a>. New Yorkers were repelled by the idea that advertisers could think that they wanted to shift the way they looked. The only way their bodies could be prepared to go on a beach would be to simply pack a bag with a towel and a swimsuit. (The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, even had said he wanted to<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/londons-mayor-wants-to-ban-one-popular-type-of-ad-2016-6" target="_blank"> ban these sorts of body-shaming ads</a>.)</p><p>Even Kayla Itsines, the woman behind the viral Instagram workout sensation Bikini Body Guides, told <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-cult-of-kayla/" target="_blank">Bloomberg</a> that she regrets calling her business that exact name. That, she said, is why she named her app Sweat With Kayla. </p><p>"<span>Do I regret calling my guides Bikini Body? My answer is yes," she said to Bloomberg. "<span>That's why when I released the app, I called it Sweat With Kayla. Sweat is so empowering. The 4'9'' muscular gymnast told <a href="http://nymag.com/thecut/2016/07/simone-biles-gymnastics-rio-olympics.html" target="_blank">The Cut</a> that she used to hide her muscles.</p><p>"<span>I always hid it with a jacket, I was always wearing a jacket," she said to The Cut. "<span>Once I started going to the gym more, I realized that … it wasn't weird. I have these muscles because I do the sport that I do."<br /></span></span></p><p><span><span> "<span>Now people are like 'do you lift? Are you a gymnast? You have a good body,'" she said to the website. "People just appreciate it more."</span></span></span></p><p>Even the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/look-inside-the-life-of-star-ballerina-misty-copeland-2016-2" target="_blank">muscular ballerina and Under Armour spokesmodel Misty Copeland </a>has spoken out about this shift (which is obviously a huge boon to ballerinas, who have long been known for their pin-thin figures - consider Mila Kunis's frail figure in Black Swan, for example). </p><p>"<span>I've struggled with body-image issues and finding a way to fit in and create a new path for the typical body type of a ballerina," Copeland said to The Cut.</span></p><p><span>She also told The Cut:</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;" data-editable="text" data-uri="nymag.com/thecut/components/clay-paragraph/instances/cir2cr9bk006cldy6ub6oit3k@published">Over the course of different generations, the ballerina body<a href="http://nymag.com/thecut/swellness/2016/07/kathryn-morgan-tiler-peck-kaitlyn-gilliland-ballerinas-tell-the-truth-about-dancer-wellness.html" target="_blank"> </a>is constantly evolving. In this day and age we do a lot more contemporary and athletic movements that create a more athletic physique. With the conversations that I've opened up, people are more open to expecting the different body types that exist. Also, if you go back to the 1930s and '40s you'll see these ballerinas that had really soft physiques - they didn't have muscles, they weren't six-feet-ten, and had big breasts - but that changed through the '60s and '70s when ballerinas got really thin.
