Equity benchmark <keyword id="6484188" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensex">Sensex</keyword> tumbled over 300 points in early trade on Monday, tracking losses in <keyword id="10617334" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="index-majors-reliance-industries">index majors Reliance Industries</keyword>, HDFC Bank and <keyword id="6653" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> amid a weak trend in global markets. The 30-share BSE index was trading 305.33 points or 0.61 per cent lower at 49,552.91, and the broader NSE <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty">Nifty</keyword> fell 76 points or 0.52 per cent to 14,668. PowerGrid was the top loser in the <keyword id="9940028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensex-pack">Sensex pack</keyword>, shedding around 2 per cent, followed by <keyword id="6355199" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries">Reliance Industries</keyword>, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and IndusInd Bank. In the previous session, Sensex ended 641.72 points or 1.30 per cent higher at 49,858.24, and Nifty surged 186.15 points or 1.28 per cent to finish at 14,744. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital market on Friday as they bought shares worth Rs 1,418.43 crore, as per exchange data. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said the market is in an excessively volatile zone. Support comes from sustained FII buying which has crossed Rs 7,000 crore during the last four trading days. "But, there is a major dampener in the form of fast-rising COVID-19 cases, especially in some economically significant cities. Restricted economic activity in these regions might impact the optimistic growth projections for FY 22," he added. Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai and Seoul were trading on a positive note in mid-session deals, while Hong Kong and Tokyo were in the red. Meanwhile, the global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.50 per cent lower at USD 64.21 per barrel. Mumbai, Mar 16 () Equity benchmark Sensex plummeted over 2,000 points and the Nifty gave up the 9,400 level in opening session on Monday after the Federal Reserve's rate cut fanned concerns over the impact of Covid-19 on world economy. The rupee too depreciated 41 paise to 74.16 against US dollar in morning session. Resuming its downward spiral, domestic BSE Sensex sank 2004.20 points or 5.88 per cent to 32,099.28 in morning session. Similarly, the NSE Nifty cracked 596.25 points, or 5.99 per cent, to 9,358.95. In the previous session, the 30-share BSE barometer recovered over 5,380 points from its intra-day low of 29,388.97, ending 1,325.34 points or 4.04 per cent higher at 34,103.48. The Nifty settled 365.05 points, or 3.81 per cent, up at 9,955.20. All Sensex components were trading in the red. IndusInd Bank was the top loser, tanking up to 12 per cent, followed by ICICI Bank, HDFC, Axis Bank, Titan, Tata Steel and Bajaj Finance. According to traders, volatility heightened in global markets as US Federal Reserve's interest rate cut stoked concerns over an impending economic recession. Faced with a growing economic shutdown amid the new coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the US Fed on Sunday made its second emergency rate cut in less than two weeks, cutting the benchmark borrowing rate to a range of 0-0.25 percent, where it was during the 2008 global financial crisis. US stock futures fell sharply after the Federal Reserve slashed interest rates. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India on Friday said it is closely monitoring the current global situation and assured that it will take all steps to keep markets adequately liquid and stable. Further, Bank of Japan (BOJ) convened an emergency policy meeting after the Fed rate cut. A BOJ statement said the meeting was "to discuss monetary control matters based on recent economic and financial developments." Japan's Nikkei was the sole Asian benchmark that did not lose ground early Monday. Elsewhere in Asia, Shanghai Composite Index, Hang Seng and Kospi fell up to 2 per cent. Incessant foreign fund outflow also kept market participants on edge, traders said. On a net basis, foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 6,027.58 crore on Friday, data available with stock exchanges showed. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil futures plunged over 2.98 per cent to USD 32.84 per barrel. Covid-19 has claimed over 6,000 lives and infected more than 1,62,000 people across the globe. Sensex tanks over 2,000 pts in global equity carnage; Nifty gives up 9,400

The Sensex crashed 667 points while the <keyword id="6354813" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty">Nifty</keyword> closed below the 10,900-mark on Monday as investors remained in selling mode for the fourth straight session amid frothy valuations and mounting COVID-19 cases. A depreciating rupee and grim macroeconomic data further sapped risk appetite, traders said. The 30-share BSE Sensex, which opened in the red, stayed in the negative zone throughout the session to close at 36,939.60, down 667.29 points or 1.77 per cent. Similarly, the NSE Nifty tumbled 181.85 points or 1.64 per cent to end at 10,891.60. The Sensex has now lost 1,553.35 points in four days, while the Nifty has shed 408.95 points. Kotak Bank was the top loser in the Sensex pack in Monday's session, slumping 4.41 per cent, followed by IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, ONGC, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Auto and Reliance Industries (RIL). Only six index constituents closed with gains -- Titan, Tata Steel, SBI, L&amp;T, HCL Tech and PowerGrid, spurting up to 3.15 per cent. According to traders, massive selling in index majors RIL and HDFC duo dragged the key indices lower. Further, foreign fund outflows and concerns over the unabated rise in COVID-19 cases across the world kept investors on edge, they added. The rupee too sank 20 paise and settled below the 75 per US dollar mark. On the macro front, India's manufacturing sector activity contracted at a slightly faster pace in July as demand conditions remained subdued, PMI data showed. The headline seasonally adjusted IHS Markit India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) stood at 46 in July, down from 47.2 in June. This is the fourth straight month of contraction for the Indian manufacturing sector. "As virus cases continued to rise and with the uncertainty regarding rate actions by the RBI, markets succumbed to the momentum slowdown visible in the last couple of trading sessions. Losses were led by financials. "Although momentum has slowed down, stock specific action is still happening, dependent mainly on the earnings results and commentary. As long as the markets hold the current range, these downturns could be short-lived and should be utilised to accumulate quality stocks," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. BSE bankex, finance, energy, oil and gas, realty, utilities and telecom indices fell up to 2.73 per cent, while, consumer durables, healthcare, metal and industrials ended in the green. Broader BSE mid-cap index slipped 0.31 per cent, while the small-cap gauge rose 1.02 per cent. Global markets were mostly higher following upbeat PMI data from China and the Eurozone, though the rising coronavirus caseload capped the gains. Bourses in Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul settled on a positive note, while Hong Kong ended in the red. Stock exchanges in Europe were also trading on a positive note in early deals. Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.69 per cent lower at USD 43.22 per barrel. India's COVID-19 tally crossed the 18-lakh mark on Monday, just a day after it went past 17 lakh, with 52,972 cases reported in a day, according to the Union Health Ministry data. The number of recoveries surged to over 11.86 lakh, while the death toll climbed to 38,135.

The RBI cut interest rates for the first time in nearly 18 months in February 2019 to boost economic growth and market sentiment. However, as a net importer of crude oil, higher prices as a result of the output cut by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will worsen India's inflation, and as a result, the fisc too. Together, they will limit the room for policymakers to stimulate the economy further.
