So, they have chosen this time to topple the Maharashtra government in an unethical manner and using money power," the Chief Minister said. BJP trying to topple Maha govt for prez polls: Mamata Banerjee

If reports from political galleries are to be believed, there is going to be a newfound alliance between Congress and Trinamool. However, senior officials of both parties are rubbishing these reports, citing it as an informal chit-chat between old friends. Interestingly, it was after three years that Banerjee was paying a visit to ‘old friend’ Gandhi's residence. 
 The rushed meeting between Banerjee and Gandhi could have had an agenda of preventing an electoral alliance between Congress and CPM. Her party, Bengal TMC, had earlier committed of not disrupting any of the Parliamentary proceedings, but has now shown support to Congress by staging a walk out protesting against the court's summon issued to Sonia Gandhi in <keyword id="1217689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Herald">National Herald</keyword> case. 
 
What gave rise to these speculations are some recent instances when Banerjee and Gandhi interacted with each other. Both had exchanged Diwali wishes in October, after hugging each other in August, when they met at the central hall in Parliament. 
 
"Even though I am not associated with any political party, as an outsider I feel that Mamata Banerjee is feeling a bit nervous. The nervousness is taking her from this door to that door. In the past three years, she only abused Congress and called them worthless. Suddenly, she overcame all bitterness and is trying to recover the relationship that she built before 2011 assembly election. Now, before 2016 elections, she appears to be really desperate," veteran parliamentarian and former speaker, Somnath Chatterjee told ET.

State power minister and Trinamool Congress veteran Sovandeb Chatterjee will contest from Bhawanipore seat as Mamata chose to contest from Nandigram. Former Trinamool Councilor and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC)'s Member of Mayor in council (MMiC) Debashis Kumar will contest from Rashbihari seat, in place of Chatterjee. The Trinamool supremo also fielded actor Kanchan Mallick, who had joined the Trinamool Congress a few days back, from Hooghly's Uttarpara; Soham Chakraborty from Chandipur; director Raj Chakraborty from Barrackpore; actress Sayantika from Bankura; actress June Malliah from Midnapore sadar; actress Sayani Ghosh from Asansol south; cricketer Manoj Tiwari from Howrah's Shibpur and Kaushani Mukherjee from Krishnanagar north assembly constituency. West Bengal will go to polls in eight phases between March 27 and April 29. Counting of votes will take place on May 2. Mamata Banerjee releases TMC's candidate list for Bengal elections

Though West Bengal Chief Minister <keyword id="43868" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mamata-Banerjee">Mamata Banerjee</keyword> is still trailing behind BJP's Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram, the trends after the fourth round of counting show that the other <keyword id="43826" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trinamool-Congress">Trinamool Congress</keyword> heavyweights are leading in their respective Assembly constituencies. After the fourth round of counting, Banerjee is trailing behind her one-time aide Adhikari in Nandigram in East Midnapore district by a margin of 3,710 votes. As per the latest Election Commission data, Adhikari, who had jumped ship from the <keyword id="43867" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trinamool">Trinamool</keyword> to the BJP in December last year, has got 34,430 votes against Banerjee's 30,655. Banerjee, who had won the last two elections from the Bhowanipur Assembly constituency in <keyword id="6354925" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>, left her seat this time and decided to contest from Nandigram. Adhikari, who was an important minister in Banerjee's cabinet before defecting to the BJP, had won from Nandigram in the 2016 elections on a Trinamool ticket. Though Banerjee is trailing, the Trinamool Congress is showing signs of cruising to a big victory with most of its major candidates leading in their respective seats. PWD Minister Arup Biswas is leading from the Tollygunge Assembly constituency over his BJP rival <keyword id="6721" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="babul-Supriyo">Babul Supriyo</keyword> by a margin of nearly 8,000 votes. Education Minister Partha Chatterjee is also leading from the Behala West Constituency by a margin of nearly 5,000 votes. Mamata Banerjee continues to trail in Nandigram while other Trinamool heavyweights are leading

She believes, the clause would be harmful for small businesses as that may lead to harassment by a section of officials. On a <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> post, <keyword id="20420" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Banerjee">Banerjee</keyword> wrote, “I would like to point out that under the current VAT regime, the field officials of the State do not have the power to arrest. If they feel that there is a serious tax offence, then they will have to file an FIR and pursue the due process of law. But in the case of GST, the Inspectors will have the power to arrest on 4 different types of offences which can result in jail from 1 year upto 5 years.” “West <keyword id="6356978" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengal">Bengal</keyword> opposed this arrest clause in the GST Council but the Government of India did not pay any heed. In fact, in the name of GST, they have deviated in many areas from the original intent,” <keyword id="6359280" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mamata">Mamata</keyword> said. “Given the atmosphere in the country of vindictively targeting anyone who dares to disagree with the Central Government, I am deeply concerned that the arrest clause in GST may well be used to target business leaders who raise their voice of dissent on any policy matter or any practices. In her letter, dated August 30, Banerjee emphasised the gravity of the situation and urged for prompt central intervention, highlighting the inadequacy of the reply received from the Union Minister of <keyword id="20086338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women-and-Child-Development" source="keywords">Women and Child Development</keyword>. The letter reads, "No reply was received from your end on such a sensitive issue. However, a reply has been received from the Minister of Women and Child Development, Government of India (vide their No. 1/RESC/HMWCD/2024 dated 25th August 2024), which barely addresses the gravity of the issue raised in my letter. I am of the view that the seriousness of the subject and its relevance to society have not been adequately appreciated in this generic reply." The letter was posted on her social media handle, X. In response to Union Minister Annapurna Devi's allegations regarding the state government's failure to implement essential safety measures for women and children, including Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), CM Mamata stated that the state government has approved 10 exclusive POCSO FTSCs, while 88 FTSCs and 62 POCSO-designated Courts are functioning with complete state funding. The letter mentioned, "Moreover, I would also refer to some of the initiatives in this area that our State has already undertaken, which appear to have been overlooked in the reply. Regarding Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), 10 exclusive POCSO Courts have been approved by the State Government. In addition to this, 88 FTSCs and 62 POCSO-designated Courts are functioning throughout the State with complete State funding. Monitoring and disposal of cases are entirely in the hands of the Courts." Highlighting the issue of appointing Presiding Officers in FTSCs, she further stated that this process requires examination and action from the Government of India, which, according to her, needs PM Modi's intervention. "As per Central Government guidelines, only retired Judicial Officers can be posted as Presiding Officers in FTSCs, but the Hon'ble High Court has observed that, in view of the severity of the cases, permanent Judicial Officers need to be appointed. This requires examination at the level of the Government of India and appropriate action thereafter, for which your intervention would be necessary. Moreover, Helpline Nos. 112 and 1098 are functioning satisfactorily in the State. Additionally, Dial 100 is also extensively used in emergency situations," the letter added. Urging for central <keyword id="20082569" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="legislation" source="keywords">legislation</keyword> and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes, the West Bengal CM expressed hope for very considered attention from PM Modi. Mamata Banerjee mentioned in her letter, "I would reiterate and earnestly request that a stringent Central legislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes of rape/rape and murder be considered, with a mandatory provision for the disposal of cases within a specific timeframe by the trial authorities. I hope this matter would receive very considered attention at your kind end in the interest of our society at large." On August 26, Union Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi criticised the West Bengal government for its failure to implement essential safety measures for women and children in the state. In a letter written to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, the Union Minister stated that 123 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) were allocated to the state, but none of them are functional yet. Earlier, on August 22, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the central government to bring in central legislation and set up fast-track courts for "sensitive" issues to ensure a speedy trial. Mamata, in the letter, mentioned that such "sensitive" issues need to be addressed comprehensively through stringent central legislation prescribing exemplary punishment against the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. The Bengal Chief Minister suggested the setting up of "fast-track special courts" to deal with such cases, which require a speedy trial. This development comes after the trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

Banerjee, born in 1961 in <keyword id="6358070" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword>, bagged the award for his "experimental approach to alleviating global poverty". The 58-year-old economist received his PhD in 1988 from <keyword id="97117" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harvard-University">Harvard University</keyword>. He also studied at the University of Calcutta and Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> had invited a 13-year-old Indian-origin boy, <keyword id="2583888" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shubham-Banerjee">Shubham Banerjee</keyword>, to showcase his low-cost portable <keyword id="2069351" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="braille-printer">Braille printer</keyword>. 
 
Now, Banerjee is working with the technology giant to integrate the printer-Braigo 2.0-with Windows to make it easily accessible to the visually-impaired. The company plans to launch the printer commercially in November. 
 The eighth-grade student in Santa Clara, California showcased his <keyword id="2853160" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="braigo">Braigo</keyword> 2.0 at a tech fair organised by the company here. 
 
"Our relationship with Microsoft will help Braigo achieve a seamless experience for a visually-impaired person who wants to use a computer at home or at the office to print documents for offline reading," Banerjee said in Microsoft blog post. 
 
He told news agency PTI that it was an amazing experience while participating in the fair and working with Microsoft. “I am looking at ways to integrate the Windows technology with the printer as I prepare to launch it commercially by November this year," he told PTI. 
 
Banerjee is targeting a price point of 500 dollars or less for the printer to ensure its affordability in organisations working for the visually-impaired in developing and least developed nations. 
 
"Also, think about the banks, the government institutions or even the libraries where Windows-based computers are widely used. They will all benefit from having a Braigo to provide accessibility services to their visually-impaired customers," Banerjee told the news agency. 
 
The young student is being flooded with reviews and valuable support from experts for Braigo that he had developed using Lego Mindstorms EV3, a robotics kit. 
 
The idea of developing such a printer came to him when he was working on a science fair project last year. He worked on the printer for almost one month and also did not lose focus from studies. 
 
He said he was shocked to learn that braille printers cost over 2,000 dollars. 
 
His father has supported him all this while. The printer uses new technology and an Intel Edison chip.
