With their rather bright red colours, those things are unmissable, after all. But if you’ve been fighting temptation because of how unhealthy they could be, we have some good news for you.<br /><br />Making kebabs the teensiest bit healthier, the Karnataka government is putting a ban on artificial colours in your favourite kebabs, be they vegetarian, chicken, or fish. This move comes after a series of actions by the <keyword id="19987876" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka-Health-Department" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Karnataka Health Department" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Karnataka Health Department">Karnataka Health Department</keyword> to ensure <keyword id="20000858" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-safety" source="keywords">food safety</keyword> and protect <keyword id="19913584" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-health" source="keywords">public health</keyword>.<br /><br />Reports of poor kebab quality due to artificial colouring prompted the department to take action. In light of these concerns about kebab safety, the government tested 39 samples from across Karnataka and 8 variants of kebabs were found to have harmful artificial colours. The presence of sunset yellow and carmoisine colours, in particular, were deemed unsafe for consumption.<br /><br />This isn't the first time the Karnataka Health Department has cracked down on harmful food additives. Following Tamil Nadu and Goa, Karnataka joined the fight for safe treats earlier this year when it flagged the use of artificial colours in cotton candy and gobi manchurian.<br /><br />The survey, conducted between February 12 and an unspecified date, revealed the presence of concerning chemicals in 15 out of 25 cotton candy samples and 107 out of 171 gobi manchurian samples. They found Rhodamine-b, a suspected carcinogen which already has a nationwide ban. This ban extends to sunset yellow and carmoisine in cotton candy, and tartrazine (when not used within approved limits) in gobi manchurian.<br /><br />If any vendors are found flouting these bans, the Food Safety and Standards Act enforces strict penalties: licence cancellation, hefty fines (up to ₹10 lakh), and even jail terms (from 7 years to life imprisonment) for using banned substances.<br /><br />Looking ahead, the government plans to raise awareness among food vendors about safe colouring alternatives, empower consumers and conduct surprise checks to ensure compliance with the new regulations.<br /><br />The success of this initiative might lead to similar scrutiny of other popular street foods, like kebabs, which often use colouring agents. This could pave the way for a future where vibrant colours on our plates come courtesy of nature, not potentially harmful chemicals.<br />

A recent inspection by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (<keyword id="20225209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FSSAI" source="keywords">FSSAI</keyword>) has revealed concerning results. Nearly 22% of pani puri samples collected from across the state failed to meet safety standards.<br /><br />A few days after banning artificial food colouring in kebabs across Karnataka, <keyword id="21070182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-safety-officials" source="keywords">food safety officials</keyword> went after the pani puri stalls littered throughout the state and even more established eateries. FSSAI reportedly collected pani puri samples randomly from 79 places across Karnataka, with 49 of them being from various parts of Bengaluru.<br /><br />The FSSAI received numerous complaints regarding the quality of pani puri being sold across Karnataka, said Srinivas K, Commissioner of Food Safety, in a press release. Experts have spoken about the potential health risks associated with these artificial colorings, suggesting that exposure to these chemicals can lead to a range of health problems. These can range from simple stomach upsets to more serious conditions like heart disease and even some autoimmune disorders.<br /><br />The FSSAI is currently analysing the test results to understand the full impact of these chemicals on public health. They are also collaborating with the Karnataka Health Department to explore potential enforcement measures against offenders.<br /><br />Srinivas K said that they are committed to ensuring food safety across the state, and are studying the data and exploring various options to improve food safety standards, particularly at smaller eateries.<br /><br />This pani puri incident is not an isolated case. <img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/47829332.cms" /><br /> In yet another case of food contamination, five samples from five different outlets of US fast food retail giant <keyword id="6376241" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="KFC">KFC</keyword> have been found to contain harmful <keyword id="52657" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="pathogens">pathogens</keyword>, <keyword id="396235" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="salmonella">salmonella</keyword> and <keyword id="101875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="E-coli">E Coli</keyword> bacteria, reported TOI. <br /><br /> The <keyword id="2920393" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Telangana-State-Food-Laboratory">Telangana State Food Laboratory</keyword> (SFL), which conducted the test on the request of NGO Balala Hakula Sangham, called the samples "unsafe". The US fast food giant, however, rejected the findings and denied any knowledge of the samples being collected from its outlets. <br /><br /> The SFL is a part of the Hyderabad-based <keyword id="177658" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Institute-of-Preventive-Medicine">Institute of Preventive Medicine</keyword>. <br /><br /> The report, dated June 24, filed by SFL food analyst AV <keyword id="346457" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Krishna-Kumari">Krishna Kumari</keyword> said: "I am of the opinion that the samples contain E.Coli and salmonella, which are pathogens and injurious to health. It is, therefore, unsafe." <br /><br />

	"We took the samples from Himayatnagar, Vidyanagar, Chikkadpally, Nacharam and ECIL X Road on June 18 and sent it to the state food laboratory the same day in packed and sealed condition in the original KFC snack box," Anuradha Rao, president of the NGO, told TOI. 
<br /><br />

	KFC in turn questioned the conditions under which the samples were taken for the test. KFC further said it did not receive any intimation from any authority over the issue.  
<br /><br />

	It said in a statement: "This alleged report is a case of false allegation. We have no knowledge of the sample being collected from any of our stores and in what condition it has been transported for this alleged test. This is a perishable food item meant for immediate consumption." 
<br /><br /> On Thursday, the NGO at a press conference quoted the report where <keyword id="2920392" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="FSL-food-analyst">FSL food analyst</keyword> AV Krishna Kumari specifically sought to clear doubts of any tampering by stating: "Sample received in sealed and labeled card box kept in brown colour paper." <br /><br /> While the NGO sought an immediate ban on KFC products, K Balaji Raju, the designated food safety officer (DFSO) in charge of central zone of <keyword id="75378" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Greater-Hyderabad-Municipal-Corporation">Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation</keyword> (GHMC) clarified that his department cannot take action if food samples are tested independently by an NGO. <br /><br />

	"Only when the food samples lifted by our department turns out to be positive in food safety lab for any contamination, it can result in an action against the defaulter from our side," he said.

KFC food samples contain harmful bacteria: Govt. report

The apiarists of Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan are as busy as a <keyword id="6363485" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bee" source="Orion">bee</keyword> itself. Sadly, they are not getting a fair price for the hard work they put in. Over the years, production cost has soared, but honey prices have not increased proportionately, putting around 1,500 beekeepers in the district in a tight spot.<br /><br />Considering the charges incurred on bee boxes, labour, food and accommodation of labourers and transport, the production cost of one kg of honey comes to Rs 125. In contrast, companies buy the produce for Rs 60-70 per kg, which is at least Rs 10 less than the procurement price provided almost two decades ago!<br /><br />The struggle does not end with this wide disparity in input and procurement costs. The drop in honey production also stings beekeepers. "Twenty-five years ago, one colony produced 50 to 60 kg of honey in the mustard growing season (October to March). With the increased use of pesticides and fertilisers, this has come down to 15 kg," said Punjab-based Jaspreet Singh, who supplies bee colonies to apiarists in Hanumangarh.<br /><br />"Bees do not visit flowers of crops sprayed with pesticides, else they will die. This has affected pollination. There is also a new concern that genetically modified plants might have an adverse effect on pollinators," he added.<br /><br /><strong>Honey trap<br /></strong><br />Among the many issues, the addition of artificial colours and sugars to honey is a major cause of concern for beekeepers. "The authorities are hand in glove with procuring companies. It keeps changing norms, which encourages companies to sell adulterated honey instead of buying pure produce from us. Some parameters were unnecessarily diluted, without any explanation,' Prakash Singh <keyword id="6382895" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="badal" source="Orion">Badal</keyword>, a resident of Nohar in Hanumangarh and president of the northern Rajasthan unit of the Rashtriya Beekeepers Sangharsh Samiti, told 101Reporters.<br /><br />The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations has defined honey as a natural sweet substance produced by bees from the pollination of plants or by separating living parts of plants or by insects sucking on living plants. The bee collects, transforms, dehydrates and stores it, ripens and matures it in the hive.<br /><br />For the greed of money, several companies play with the health of unsuspecting consumers by selling honey mixed with maize and rice syrup. An investigation carried out by Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in 2020 found that 10 out of the 13 major brands sold honey containing sugar syrup.<br /><br />"In 1994, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had set the standard for pollen count and plant element in honey at 50,000 per gram, but it was changed to 25,000 per gram in 2018. A year later, it was diluted to 5,000 per gram. The government also did away with the quality control test for honey," Badal explained.<br /><br />At the same time, pollen count is not considered a measure of the quality of honey globally. Consequently, determining adulteration by checking the pollen count has been a matter of controversy. This is exacerbated by the fact that pollen count varies in different types of honey. For example, it can be different in mustard, litchi, or honey obtained from a single flower or different flowers.<br /><br /><strong>Banks sting them<br /></strong><br />Rajasthan Khadi and Village Industries Board does not run any special scheme for beekeepers, but gets grants from the Khadi and Village Industries Commission through the state government. While banks give loans to apiarists, the board pitches in by offering subsidies to the loanee using the Central Commission's grant. The subsidy component differs for Scheduled Castes and Tribes, Other Backward Classes and the general category. However, the subsidy upper limit is 35 per cent of the loan amount. <br /><br />Harjeet Singh of Araiyanwali Dhani explained how banks let him down. "My brother Gurmeet Singh and I made a loan application with the Khadi board in 2019. The board sanctioned Rs 8 lakh each in our names and sent the proposal to ICICI Bank, which turned it down after a long-winding process. If the bank had passed our loan, we could have expanded our beekeeping business and taken advantage of the subsidy." <br /><br />Kuldeep Saharan of Ranjitpura had a similar experience. "The board sanctioned Rs 4 lakh in my name, but the State Bank of India did not disburse the money. No bank gives money to beekeepers," he lamented.<br /><br />Confirming the charge, Madan Lal Swami, Divisional Officer, Rajasthan Khadi and Village Industries Board, Bikaner, told 101Reporters that banks were not cooperative. He said they have raised the issue in several meetings and seminars, but the attitude of the banks have remained the same.<br /><br />"From 2018 to date, 58 apiarists have applied for loans. We rejected 21 applications at the departmental level due to various deficiencies, but approved 35 and asked various banks to give loans. Yet, only four beekeepers got the money. The remaining two applications are pending with us."<br /><br />When contacted, <keyword id="103483" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="raj-kumar" source="Orion">Raj Kumar</keyword>, lead district manager, Hanumangarh, told 101Reporters that banks do not adopt a negative approach in any matter. "It is quite possible that banks have rejected several applications because they are not confident that the loanee can pay back the amount. They just want to ensure the return of the money. At the same time, there may be cases where the banks have given loans to all applicants. It is purely based on the merit of each case," he said.<br /><br />Rajasthan Horticulture Department also has a provision to arrange a 40 per cent subsidy from the National Horticulture Mission for the supply of bee colonies and bee boxes. In the 2022-23 financial year, the department planned to distribute 2,850 colonies and boxes in Hanumangarh district. Similarly, neighbouring Sri Ganganagar district was to get 7,550 colonies and boxes each.<br /><br />Horticulture Officer <keyword id="6110560" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajendra-nain" source="Orion">Rajendra Nain</keyword> told 101Reporters that a tender invite was issued last year, but the contract was not inked with any of the bidders. Two months ago, a new tender invitation was made. <br /><br />Bogged down by several issues, the apiarists of Hanumangarh district held a protest outside the Collectorate in February and submitted a memorandum of demands, which included announcing a Minimum Support Price of Rs 150 per kg for honey.<br /><br />They sought recognition of honey bees as inputs to agriculture and landless beekeepers as farmers, as recommended by Bibek Debroy-led Beekeeping Development Committee under the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. "The Debroy committee had recommended plantation of bee-friendly flora at appropriate places and employment of women self-help groups for its upkeep," said Badal.<br /><br />The committee report released on June 26, 2019, had discussed the state government's role in training beekeepers, besides promoting infrastructure at the national and regional levels for the collection, processing, marketing and promotion of honey and related products. There were suggestions to simplify the procedures and specify clear standards to ease exports.<br /><br />"We would have benefitted if the committee's recommendations were implemented, but it has been shelved for almost four years," he added.<br /><br />The beekeepers also sought the setting up of a laboratory that met international standards to check the purity of honey and curb adulteration. They want the administration to ban genetically modified crops and the indiscriminate use of pesticides in agriculture. Rajasthan's beekeepers in the honey trap of high costs and low prices

Expressing solidarity with the people of Lakshadweep, the <keyword id="28504" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword> Legislative Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a <keyword id="6359987" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Resolution">resolution</keyword> demanding the recall of island administrator Praful Khoda Patel and requesting the immediate intervention of the Centre to protect the lives and livelihood of the islanders. With this, Kerala has become the first state in the country to come up with a resolution to support the people of the union territory over the recent developments. <br /><br />An archipelago located in the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep is witnessing protests by local people for some days over the recent actions and administrative reforms being implemented by Patel. <br /><br />Chief Minister Pinarayi <keyword id="6388414" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijayan">Vijayan</keyword> moved the government resolution, the first such motion in the 15th <keyword id="144407" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-Assembly">state Assembly</keyword>, reminiscing the historic and cultural bond between Kerala and Lakshadweep and criticising the Centre for allegedly trying to destroy the natural democracy there. <br /><br />Stating that the future of Lakshadweep is a matter of concern, he said any attempt to undermine its unique culture and indigenous lifestyle is unacceptable. <br /><br />Anyone who upholds Constitutional values should register a strong disagreement against the actions of the administrator of Lakshadweep, the Chief Minister urged. <br /><br />Setting aside their political differences, members of the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front and the Congress- headed United Democratic Front unanimously backed the resolution, except some amendments suggested by the latter. <br /><br />The hard-hitting resolution allegedthat attempts were being made to impose "saffronagendas" and "corporate interests" by destroying the unique way of life of Lakshadweep people. <br /><br />The implementation of the agenda, rolled out in the name of reforms, began with the painting of coconut trees with saffron colour and it has now grown to the level of destroying the traditional habitat, life and natural relationships of the island dwellers, it alleged. <br /><br />Steps have been taken to bring in the Goonda Act in the island where the crime rate is exceptionally low, it said. <br /><br />Pointing out that the authorities also aimed at destroying their traditional livelihood of fishing, the resolution said tents, where the fishermen's boats and nets are kept, have been rampantly destroyed. <br /><br />Through the attempt to exclude beef, which is part of the natural diet of the people of the territory, the Sangh Parivar agenda of banning cow slaughter was being implemented through the backdoor, it alleged. <br /><br />Thus, the administrator has taken the lead in annihilating the indigenous life and culture of the people of a territory inch by inch, the brief resolution further charged. <br /><br />Criticising the Centre's act of giving the administrator special powers to intervene into the affairs of various government departments, Vijayan said it amounted to undermining the island's natural democracy by deploying officials of their choice. <br /><br />"The recent developments in Lakshadweep should be seen as a laboratory of the Sangh Parivar agenda. Kerala Assembly passes resolution seeking recall of Lakshadweep administrator

By Aditi Khanna <p>London, Apr 13 () The Sikh festival of Vaisakhi will not be marked with large gatherings and melas in different parts of the UK this year as the community has been urged to stay safe amid the coronavirus pandemic as events stand cancelled. </p><p>Vaisakhi, which this year falls on Monday, commemorates the creation of the Khalsa, a collective body of Sikhs.</p><p>Virtual kirtans and shabads being streamed from gurdwaras are aimed at supporting the UK government's stay-at-home message for a festival usually marked by large gatherings and festivities across different parts of the country.</p><p>"As households come together over the coming days for family celebrations, we will be also thinking about how we can support our incredible NHS [National Health Service] people as they care for people through this global health emergency," said Prerana Issar, NHS Chief People Officer.</p><p>"Our NHS staff are doing extraordinary things at this extraordinary time. The best thing we can do is to protect them by following government guidance and staying indoors and washing our hands. Together we can then focus on respecting and celebrating the important upcoming dates and festivals, safely with our families," she said.</p><p>Under the UK's ongoing social distancing measures to try and curb the spread of Covid-19, gatherings of more than two people in public, including religious gatherings and except for funerals, are banned. </p><p> Police forces have the power to fine or even arrest individuals breaking that ban as the government has been urging the public to stay the course during what is a long Easter holiday weekend in the UK, including Monday.</p><p>London's annual Vaisakhi on the Square held at Trafalgar Square, scheduled for next Saturday, was cancelled as Mayor Sadiq Khan took measures to enforce the lockdown measures in the UK capital.</p><p>The London Mayor said: "Our Trafalgar Square celebrations are key moments that bring communities together from across the capital, but the government has advised that large gatherings should not take place so we will be cancelling them until further notice.</p><p>"It is vital that we take all necessary precautions to ensure the health of all in our city."</p><p>A similar mega Vaisakhi event held at Handsworth Park in Birmingham, one of the cities with the UK's largest Sikh population, stands cancelled amid the lockdown, with celebrations in Leicester, Southall and Gravesend also called off.</p><p>"No event in the Sikh calendar should endanger lives," said Southall Gurdwara in west London.</p><p>The events at annual Vaisakhi events, including colourful street processions in the form of nagar kirtans, feeding the community with langars as well as cultural activities including the traditional Sikh martial art of Gatka, have been replaced by a focus on community service to help the vulnerable during the lockdown.</p><p>"Our amazing selfless volunteers are dedicated in helping those in need during this difficult time," said the Khalsa Aid charity, which has been working on food deliveries and other community support initiatives through the pandemic.</p><p>In social media, an @SikhAssembly initiative is aimed at involving British Sikhs in a "Virtual Vaisakhi" as part of a worldwide celebration including sharing texts, poems, art, photos, video clips.</p>The Sikh Council UK said that special food production guidance compiled by the Sikh Doctors Association had been issued to gurdwaras during the pandemic to aid the production of healthy langars. <p>Haggis is a <a href="http://culinaryarts.about.com/od/glossary/g/Haggis.htm">traditional Scottish dish </a>made of the heart, liver, and lungs of a sheep or lamb. The chopped up meat is mixed with oatmeal and other spices, such as cayenne pepper and onion. It's then packed up like a jumbo sausage into the lining of a sheep or lamb's stomach and boiled. </p>
<p><span>The US Food and Drug Administration has </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">prohibited the import of Scottish haggis since 1971, when a ban was placed on any food containing animal lungs. The ban was </span><a href="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2010/01/usda-to-lift-21-year-ban-on-haggis/#.VLfSKoqsVJ0" target="_blank">reinforced in the late 1980s during Europe's mad cow disease</a> scare<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Food Safety News reports.</span></p>
<p>But Lord McColl of Dulwich, <a href="http://www.parliament.uk/biographies/lords/lord-mccoll-of-dulwich/1892" target="_blank">a member of the House of Lords who previously worked as a professor and surgeon at Guy's and St Thomas' Medical School in London</a>, is working toward having that ban lifted. He <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">lamented the conditions of 24 million American Scots who were denied "this wholesome food" because of a ban on food imports, the BBC said. </span></p>
<p>The remark was directed at British prime minister David Cameron, currently in Washington for a state visit to President Obama. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The BBC reported that food minister Lord de Mauley said the EU and the UK were working to get import bans in the US lifted. </span></p>
<p>Dulwich <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-30834196" target="_blank">claims that haggis satisfies "hunger very much more than the junk food which Americans consume,"</a> the BBC reports, and that the Scottish food would help deal with the "obesity epidemic" in America. </p>
<p>Haggis does have some nutrients - <span>a haggis producer in Edinburgh describes the "</span><a href="http://www.macsween.co.uk/what-is-haggis/" target="_blank">oaty, spicy mince" as a "great source of iron, fibre, and carbohydrate with no artificial colours, flavourings, or preservatives</a><span>" - </span>but it's far from a health food. It's high in saturated fat and salt. </p>
<p>In 2006, the Scottish government <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4642682.stm">placed haggis on list of foods that should be eaten in moderation</a>, alongside turkey twizzlers and burgers. </p>
<p>At the time, BBC quoted a Scottish Executive spokeswoman who said: "Haggis is tasty but due to fairly high salt and fat content young children should only indulge in moderation."</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 1.17em; color: #000000;"></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">On Tesco's online market, </span><a href="http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=264577840" target="_blank">haggis' nutritional values are listed as 240 kCal per 100 grams</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. Almost 14% of it is pure fat. </span></p>

Former British Surgeon Says Americans Should Eat More Haggis To Fight Obesity

Under the new policy, employees are allowed to wear shirt colors outside of solid black or white, as well as dark wash jeans. But just getting the votes on the agenda of the annual shareholder meeting represents a victory of sorts for the activist investors involved.</p><p>Amazon fought an unusually hard legal battle to silence shareholders and stop the votes from taking place this week. After engaging law firm Gibson Dunn, it appealed to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) twice to strike the proposals out. Legal documents show that in doing so, Amazon trash talked the commercial potential of Rekognition and said customers are to blame if the technology is misused.</p><h2>Rekognition under heavy fire</h2><p>Amazon launched Rekognition in 2016 and it is used to analyse images or videos to identify people or objects. Hosted on Amazon Web Services' servers, Rekognition is mainly licensed by media and technology companies, such as <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/4/17318354/royal-wedding-uk-facial-recognition-sky-news-date" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sky News, which used the software to identify celebrities at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding last year.</a> Amazon has also worked with government groups to, among other things, rescue victims of human trafficking, the firm said in its proxy statement.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5ce3bff7021b4c063d2c9034-1907/andy jassy.png" border="0" alt="Andy Jassy" data-mce-caption="Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy introducing Rekognition in 2017." data-mce-source="Amazon/YouTube" /><p class="source"><span>Amazon/YouTube</span></p><p class="caption">Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy introducing Rekognition in 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But Amazon has come under heavy fire from human rights organizations, such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), <a href="https://gizmodo.com/amazon-workers-demand-jeff-bezos-cancel-face-recognitio-1827037509" target="_blank" rel="noopener">and its own staff,</a> over sales of Rekognition to government agencies and law enforcement. The ACLU fears it could be used for surveillance and has raised alarming questions about its accuracy.</p><p>The ACLU tested the technology last year on members of Congress, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-under-fire-aclu-facial-recognition-tech-identified-congress-members-arrested-2018-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">28 of whom it mistakenly identified as people who have previously been arrested</a>. A group of AI experts also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-experts-call-on-amazon-not-to-sell-rekognition-software-to-police-2019-4?r=US&amp;IR=T">published an open letter in April</a>, warning that the technology is particularly inaccurate when analyzing the faces of women and people of color.</p><p>Amazon said the ACLU had not applied the correct "confidence threshold," which it says is necessary to use the technology. However, reports from <a href="https://gizmodo.com/defense-of-amazons-face-recognition-tool-undermined-by-1832238149">Gizmodo</a> and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/04/30/amazons-facial-recognition-technology-is-supercharging-local-police/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Post</a> revealed that police in Washington County, who are currently deploying Rekognition, do not necessarily pay attention to the 99% confidence threshold that Amazon recommends. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-police-running-sketches-through-amazon-facial-recognition-tech-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The force was even running black and white sketches of suspects through the software</a>, the Post said.</p><p>In a statement sent to Business Insider, an Amazon spokeswoman said it has spent the past few months talking to customers, researchers, academics, and lawmakers about balancing the "benefits of facial recognition with the potential risks."</p><p>She added: "We have not seen law enforcement agencies use Amazon Rekognition to infringe on citizens' civil liberties. We've received no reports of misuse of Amazon Rekognition by law enforcement agencies, and if anyone is concerned that the service is being misused, they can report it <a href="https://aws.amazon.com/rekognition/report-abuse/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://aws.amazon.com/rekognition/report-abuse/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1558541077359000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF6FpKx9NaDz0hpmwjvPyIRBQoYmg">here</a> and we will investigate."</p><h2>A brusque 30-minute phone call</h2><p>Activist shareholders swung into action late last year, drawing up plans for a vote on sales of Rekognition at Amazon's annual investor meeting.</p><p>The battle to get the proposals on Amazon's proxy statement started with a brusque, 30-minute phone call in December, according to Michael Connor, the executive director of Open Mic, an organization that helps shareholders campaign to improve governance at some of America's biggest companies.</p><p>Long Island-based Catholic women's order, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, put forward a shareholder proposal to bind Amazon's hands on selling Rekognition to government agencies on December 7. It was supported by Open Mic and the Tri-State Coalition, which advocates for corporate social responsibility on behalf of 40 Roman Catholic dioceses and congregations.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-police-running-sketches-through-amazon-facial-recognition-tech-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A US police force is running suspect sketches through Amazon's facial recognition tech and it could lead to wrongful arrests</a></em></p><p>Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood only owns around $2.5 million worth of Amazon shares, but felt compelled to take a stand after becoming "alarmed" that Amazon's facial recognition software "may increase targeted surveillance of immigrants and people of colour," according to its letter to Amazon's general counsel David Zapolsky.</p><p>"It's a poor instrument to use and it's especially poor for African American communities," Sister Patricia Mahoney added in a phone interview with Business Insider.</p><p>Connor told Business Insider that it was clear from the initial phone call with Amazon representatives in late 2018 that the company was not prepared to engage with questions about its technology, and the conversation was over almost as soon as it began.</p><h2>Amazon bids to block shareholder votes</h2><p>On January 22, Amazon lawyers wrote to the SEC requesting that it block the proposal, known as the Tri-State proposal. It also asked the SEC to strike out a second proposal, put forward by activist shareholder Harrington Investments, calling for an independent review of Amazon's facial recognition activity.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5ce3d086021b4c08421aa1e6-1854/rekognition demo.png" border="0" alt="Rekognition demo" data-mce-source="Amazon Web Services" /><p class="source"><span>Amazon Web Services</span></p><p class="caption">An Amazon Web Services demo of Rekognition.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In a 17-page letter sent to the SEC, Amazon's lawyers provided grounds for the dismissal for two reasons. Firstly, they argued that Rekognition is not "economically significant" to Amazon or a big part of its day-to-day business.</p><p>The facial recognition software is just one of 165 Amazon Web Services products, lawyers said. It accounted for "significantly less" than 5% of Amazon's overall revenue of $233 billion last year and sales are not expected to "increase meaningfully" this year. Furthermore, the "vast majority" of Rekognition's customers are not in the public sector, according to the letter.</p><p>Amazon's second argument was basically this: If facial recognition is misused, it is the fault of the customer who has broken the terms of service, rather than Amazon itself. Amazon is "not aware to date of any reported misuse by law enforcement customers," lawyers added.</p><p>"The proposals do not have a sufficient nexus to the company's operations ... and instead address potential inappropriate actions by certain of the company's customers," Amazon's lawyers said. "Any unlawful use of Amazon Rekognition by the company's customers would violate the contractual terms on which the company has made its product available."</p><p>Six days later after Amazon's plea to block the votes, the SEC rejected the move. Amazon then appealed the SEC's decision in "legal action that's rarely taken," according to Connor. In a letter on March 29, Gibson Dunn rehashed Amazon's arguments from its first request, but again, the appeal was dismissed. Studies have shown error rates in facial-analysis systems built by Amazon, IBM and Microsoft were far higher for darker-skinned women than lighter-skinned men." data-mce-source="Elaine Thompson/AP" /><p class="source"><span>Elaine Thompson/AP</span></p><p class="caption">Protest over Rekognition last year.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>They were <a href="https://medium.com/aclu/an-open-letter-to-amazon-shareholders-374f4fb84e98" target="_blank" rel="noopener">urged to back the proposals in an open letter from the ACLU</a>, which is aggressively lobbying against facial recognition software, and was a vocal <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/san-francisco-bans-facial-recognition-software-by-police-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">proponent of the technology being banned in San Francisco.</a></p><p>"Without shareholder action, Amazon may soon become known more for its role in facilitating pervasive government surveillance than for its consumer <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> operations," the ACLU said on Monday.</p><p>Connor said it's "impossible" to predict the outcome of the votes, but they are quietly confident. "We know we've gotten the support of two leading proxy advisors for at least one of the proposals, and some large pension funds have said they are supportive," he said. "Whatever the outcome on Wednesday, Amazon will not be able to ignore us.
