Also, it was a position that most people never expected him to hold — even when he made a stellar statement before the state elections in 2019, that there could be a day when a Sena member would become the CM. This was when Sena was allied with BJP, and only a few cracks had developed. This changed the power dynamics within and outside the family; along with Uddhav’s career. He had to wrap up his ad business, and join the family business — the business of power. The rise of Uddhav was just as dramatic as his end. When Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was formed, he became the chief minister for merely a day when NCP’s Ajit Pawar broke off a faction to join BJP and Fadnavis. That plan failed too after yet another big man and NCP’s head <keyword id="6364749" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sharad-pawar" source="Orion">Sharad Pawar</keyword> took the control back into hands and placed Uddhav, the son of his friend – back in the CM’s seat. In the conceding press conference, Fadvanis used the choicest words to describe the alliance, “A three-wheeled vehicle which will move in different directions, and will fall soon,” he had said. Not only did Aditya hold three cabinet positions, he also attended meetings of departments like MMRDA, angering senior Sena loyalists like Eknath Shinde and many more – as they rebelled against the government. As the rebels left, Uddhav made no strong-arm moves like his father would have made or even Pawar would have. He simply asked them to come back and meekly vacated the CM’s bungalow, resigning to his fate – long before he resigned from his post yesterday on June 29, a day before the floor test was ordered by the governor B S S Koshiyari, an RSS veteran. If the Maha crisis as it is being called is a test Uddhav Thackeray’s fortitude, then he accepted his defeat with grace that befits an artist more than a politician. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah among others for reposing confidence in him. Backed by the BJP, <keyword id="6360495" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="shinde" source="Orion">Shinde</keyword> on Thursday took oath as the chief minister of Maharashtra with the support of a breakaway faction of Shiv Sena MLAs and Independents. After taking the oath in Mumbai, Shinde returned to Goa at midnight to meet his colleagues who had supported him in rebelling against <keyword id="53973" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uddhav-thackeray" source="Orion">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword>. Interacting with reporters at the Goa Airport, he said Maharashtra could see this day because of his 50 MLAs. The chief minister said his government will do the works that are expected from them by the people of Maharashtra. Shinde said his government will work to deliver justice to every section of society. "We will also take ahead the vision of Balasaheb Thackeray." Asked about cabinet expansion, he said the future strategy would be discussed in the meeting with his colleagues. Eknath Shinde says Balasaheb's Sainik has become the chief minister

Mumbai, Former Lok Sabha Speaker and ex-Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar G. <keyword id="19952829" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="joshi" source="keywords">Joshi</keyword>, a senior <keyword id="19905334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shiv-sena" source="keywords">Shiv Sena</keyword> (UBT) leader, passed away following a heart attack early on Friday morning. "Our family is deeply saddened to inform you that <keyword id="20281058" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manohar-joshi" source="keywords">Manohar Joshi</keyword> passed away today morning at 3 a.m. following prolonged age related health issues," his family said in a terse announcement at dawn. Joshi, 86, was rushed to the Hinduja Hospital in Mahim after suffering a heart attack late on Thursday. 'Sir', as he was popular in political circles because of his teaching background and a stern demeanour, succumbed during treatment around 3 a.m., plunging the state political fraternity into gloom. His family said that Joshi's mortal remains will be kept at their home in Matunga to enable people to pay their last respects from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., and then taken in a procession for the funeral at Dadar Crematorium around 3 p.m. One of the closest confidantes of the late Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, Joshi had over six decades in politics starting as a Municipal Corporator, then Mayor, Maharashtra CM, Union Minister, then crowning glory as the Speaker of Lok Sabha. Joshi had been suffering from certain old-age related ailments for the past several months and largely kept out of public glare, but remained with the SS-UBT, till he breathed his last. Top leaders across the political spectrum have paid rich tributes to Joshi who headed the first-ever saffron government in the state comprising the undivided Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (1995-1999), in an era when politics was more principled and less unscrupulous. Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> condoled the demise of the veteran leader. Manohar Joshi: The 'Sir' with a stern demeanour

The <keyword id="53973" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="uddhav-thackeray" source="Orion">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword> camp, led by Sunil Prabhu, has moved the Supreme Court seeking suspension of 16 MLAs, including <keyword id="193503" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="eknath-shinde" source="Orion">Eknath Shinde</keyword>, from the Maharashtra <keyword id="6354702" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="assembly" source="Orion">Assembly</keyword> till the disqualification proceedings initiated against them are decided and also urged the court to restrain 'delinquent' MLAs from entering the Assembly. Prabhu has filed the plea through advocate Javedur Rahman, which will be mentioned on Friday before a vacation bench. The plea said till date there is no dispute regarding the leadership position of Uddhav <keyword id="41515" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="thackeray" source="Orion">Thackeray</keyword> as the president of the <keyword id="6358821" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="shiv-sena" source="Orion">Shiv Sena</keyword> political party. It cited the resolution passed in national executive meeting of the Shiv Sena political party held on June 25, this year, where Thackeray's leadership was re-affirmed and the conduct of the delinquent MLAs led by Eknath Shinde has been criticised. The plea said it has further been resolved to take necessary steps to disqualify the rebels from the membership of the <keyword id="130426" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="legislative-assembly" source="Orion">Legislative Assembly</keyword>. The plea said despite the rebellion carried out by the Eknath Shinde faction, the original Shiv Sena political party remains under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray, who was elected as the president on January 23, 2018, when the organisational elections of the Shiv Sena were conducted and the same was duly communicated to the Election Commission on February 27, 2018. The plea said, "Pass an interim order suspending the delinquent MLAs, against whom disqualification petitions have been filed by the <keyword id="892378" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="applicant" source="Orion">Applicant</keyword> herein, from the membership of the 14th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, till the final adjudication of the Tenth Schedule proceedings initiated against them." The editorial compared his resignation to that of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s in 1996 ahead of a trust vote after BJP emerged as the single largest party but woefully short of seats to form the government. A few lakhs of young volunteers have been the strength of Sena and they have been lacking the personal touch that they received from Uddhav’s father. In fact, MLAs too have been complaining about his uppity nature which not only let his son keep three ministries under him, but was not meeting MLAs, and has been tight fisted about distribution of public funds as well. “MLAs receive funds from the government to spend towards their constituents. A lot of MLAs have been unhappy that Congress gets a larger share of these funds and that has made them weaker in their constituencies,” said a Sena insider who has been working with the party for over ten years. As less trickled out, party workers too have been feeling slighted in spite of the fact that “their party” rules the CM’s chair. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The Anand Dighe’s disciple" comment="subhead" text="The Anand Dighe’s disciple">The Anand Dighe’s disciple</cmsannotation> Shinde, on the other hand, has always been a man of the masses – having learnt from the best, his mentor Anand Dighe. The late Sena strongman was so powerful and well known in Thane as he used to hold emperor-style darbars everyday, solving big and small problems alike from troubles with neighbours to hooligans teasing their daughters. In fact, that’s the introduction scene of the recently-released Marathi movie ‘Dharam Veer’ which is a biopic made on Dighe. After members of a Brahmin society complain in the darbar about the nuisance created by a Thane dance bar closeby, Shinde dashes into a bar, hitting the offenders and bringing them to his knees. The Sena insider also tells another secret behind Shinde’s power – he is the moneymaker. In fact, he is richer than another Sena member Sanjay Raut, who is currently being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). “The fact that ED never did touch him in spite of how rich he was, shows that he was probably hand in glove with BJP for a long time,” the insider says. Both Uddhav and Shinde have arsenals — the former has legacy, a newspaper, and now even sympathy. The latter has money, men and the support of a national party — and now he also holds power. It’s left to be seen what people choose to go for — backing a winner or picking the underdog — both popular vote banks in India. It’s not the CM seat but the one who wields ‘bow and arrow’ will be the Sena head

Shiv Sena chief <keyword id="53973" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uddhav-Thackeray">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword> on Monday said his son taking a plunge into electoral politics does not mean he is retiring, and expressed confidence that a Sena worker would one day become the state's chief minister. In an interview to Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana', he claimed his party put a check on the 'Modi wave' in the 2014 state Assembly polls, but maintained there was no point in a discussion now on why they parted ways with the BJP at that time. This time, the Sena is contesting on 124 out of the total 288 constituencies in alliance with the BJP, which has nominated candidates for 150 seats. Rest of the seats will be allotted to smaller allies from the BJP's quota. "One day, a Shiv Sainik would become the chief minister of Maharashtra, it is a promise I made to my father and Sena founder late Balasaheb," Uddhav Thackeray said in the interview, a part of which was released on Monday. The Sena chief's son Aaditya Thackeray is entering electoral politics from Worli constituency in Mumbai, and the October 21 state polls are being seen as a litmus test for the party, whether it can bank on the young leader's popularity to win public mandate. "Aaditya contesting the Assembly election does not necessarily mean I am retiring from active politics. I am very much around," he said. "I am not going to do farming," he said sarcastically, in an apparent reference to NCP leader Ajit Pawar who recently resigned as an MLA and advised his son to prefer farming or business over politics. He also claimed that in 2014, when the Sena and BJP snapped ties ahead of the Assembly polls, his party put a check on the 'Modi wave' which had swept the country. "There is no point in discussing the reasons behind the BJP and Sena contesting (the 2014 polls) separately. It was a war. There was a 'wave' at the national level, but we put a check on it in Maharashtra," he said. "Despite being in power, we have always raised voice for the cause of the common man," he added.

Shiv Sainik will be CM one day, Uddhav Thackeray says as his son enters politics

A year has passed since the tiger stopped roaring. But does Mumbai miss him? Of course, the Marathi Manoos part of Mumbai does miss him every day, with every event and every political development. When <keyword id="6371377" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bal-Thackeray">Bal Thackeray</keyword> breathed his last on November 17, 2012, at the age of 86, Mumbai spilled out on the streets to mourn for the man who ruled the very spirit of the city. It is difficult to imagine Mumbai without Balasaheb. 
 
This cartoonist-turned-activist was Mumbai personified and sometimes transmogrified into aggression that an average Mumbaikar wanted to express. After he passed away, Mumbai had not only lost its voice, but also the spirit. Balasaheb had a finger on the pulse of Mumbai. He could never be wrong with the city or the people of Maharashtra. 
 
When alive, Balasaheb was a total mystery wrapped in contradictions. And those contradictions lie in his very personality. He was a chuffy man with a serious look, a tiger who sat on the throne, and a man who commanded thousands but was most humble when dealing with friends. 
 
In other words, he was human. He carried no pretentions. Just as the cartoonist he was when he worked with the Free Press Journal, Balasaheb evoked humour with every situation that touched him. And he had the capacity to laugh at himself. For this, he could contradict himself. Yet, his Shiv Sainiks did not grumble, ever. They followed their leader with as much loyalty as before, which was a puzzle even to his close relatives. 
 There are many real-life instances and legends involving Bal Thackeray’s reactions and responses to situations and people. His jibes were never short on satire. They were timely, sharp and always hit the bull’s eye. Even in his editorial in <keyword id="6358821" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shiv-Sena">Shiv Sena</keyword> mouthpiece Saamna, Balasaheb was as powerful as he was with his spoken words. A true artist who had perfected his art of curvy lines and never let the guard dictate terms over his persona. 
 
Although he was referred to as the ‘tiger’ of Maharashtra, Balasaheb was more than that. The thespian of Hindi cinema, Dilip Saab, chose to call him a ‘lion’ who had the whole forest at his command, without having to strike his claws at anyone. 
 
But in the true sense, tiger was what he was. By temperament and by design. Just as the tiger never moves out of its habitat and protects its territory from other big cats, Balasaheb worked in the same way. 
 He rarely moved out of Mumbai. And when he saw Mumbai (then <keyword id="6356654" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bombay">Bombay</keyword>) being overtaken by outsiders, he launched the Shiv Sena in 1966. The idea was to protect his people’s turf, the Marathi Manoos (Maratha people), from the ‘outsiders.’ For that, he could reprimand anyone including the so-called stars with millions of fans. His political legacy was unquestioned and remained unquestionable, too. Even after his death, Shiv Sainiks have made sure that nobody would ever dare to question his authority. Remember the incident where two girls were arrested (they were later released) for their FB status – questioning the Mumbai shutdown on the day when his last rites were held? That was Mumbai grieving over its true son. It was an emotional moment that couldn’t be countered with logic or rationality. Balasaheb’s equation with his Sainiks was built on human bridges, over decades. It couldn’t come down with his physical demise. They still believe he is there with them for without him, they remain ideologically orphaned. He gave them their thinking and actions, and told them when to employ either of these. 
 Those who knew him had clearly understood he had no long-term goals to achieve. He did not aspire to be the <keyword id="5269" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Chief-Minister">chief minister</keyword> or occupy any position that would take him to corridors of power. He had clearly understood where his powers lay. He was powerful in his very being. Not even the <keyword id="6362177" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="union-government">Union Government</keyword>, no matter which party occupied the seats at the Parliament. Balasaheb was in power, always. In fact, HE was THE power. 
 
That he had no encumbrances had never been a problem for this leader who had shown his ‘human’ side to his men. But it was a problem for others who tried to fit him into a definition or tried to psychoanalyse him and understand him in a straitjacketed manner. Like a true cartoonist, his lines never came straight. They always curved to say something. That something was always between the lines. 
 That is why <keyword id="4952" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Michael-Jackson">Michael Jackson</keyword> visited him at his abode Maatoshree on the former’s India visit. And so did a host of politicians and Hollywood stars. Even though he declared that he wouldn’t allow India-Pakistan matches to be held in Mumbai, he also had the gumption to invite Javed Miandad to his house for dinner. When asked, he said he wanted the Indian team to have similar ‘killer instinct’ as Pakistani cricketers had while playing on the ground. 
 
His Hindutva was not as skewed as that of the Hindutva-vadis. In fact, he chafed at the RSS men calling them ‘knickerwallahs.’ He remained the uncrowned king of Maharashtra for 45 years. And unless psychologists dig deep into his persona, this legend called Balasaheb can never be understood through mere words.

Earlier, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had announced at a joint meeting of the three parties that swearing in of the new government will take place on December 1, but the schedule was apparently changed after Uddhav met Governor. The Sena president, alongwith key leaders of Congress and NCP, met Governor B K Koshyari to stake claim to form government on Tuesday night. "Uddhav Thackeray will take oath as chief minister on November 28 at Shivaji Park ground," the Sena leader who accompanied him said. The rest of the cabinet will be sworn in later, he said. Balasaheb Thorat, leader of legislative wing of the Congress, confirmed that Thackeray will take oath on November 28.

Long stints in electoral politics and past experience in handling key government departments are the hallmarks of Congress-NCP-Shiv Sena legislators who took oath as ministers along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray at the Shivaji Park here on Thursday evening. Thackeray is heading a coalition government, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), whose main constituents are the Sena, the Congress and the NCP. <keyword id="6360285" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="chhagan-bhujbal">Chhagan Bhujbal</keyword>, Jayant Patil (both from the NCP), Balasaheb Thorat and Nitin Raut (both from the Congress), Eknath Shinde and Subhash Desai (both from the Sena) took oath as ministers along with Thackeray. Chhagan Bhujbal: Bhujbal (72) is a veteran figure in Maharashtra politics, who has the rare distinction of being associated with all the three major non-BJP parties in the state. A senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, Bhujbal had been a member of both the Shiv Sena and the Congress at different times. Taking over as a minister is a sort of revival of his political fortunes after spending two years in jail since March 2016 in a money laundering case when the BJP-led government was in power. Bhujbal, who represents the OBC community, cut his political teeth in the Shiv Sena. He served as the Mayor of Mumbai, a Sena bastion, two times - 1985-86 and 1990-91. He quit the Sena in 1991, causing quite a stir in state politics, and joined the Congress. Bhujbal resigned from the Congress in 1999 and sided with Sharad Pawar who formed the NCP the same year. He became deputy chief minister in December 2008 and held key portfolios such as home affairs and public works in the Congress-NCP government. Jayant Patil: Jayant Patil (57) is perceived as a leader with a clean image. He took charge of the NCP's Maharashtra unit replacing Sunil Tatkare in April 2018, ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha and state Assembly polls. The NCP retained its tally in the 2019 April Lok Sabha election and fared better in the October Assembly polls, but the credit largely went to his boss, Pawar. Being part of a motley alliance of once-rival and ideologically divergent parties, Patil, known for composed demeanour, will be one of the key leaders who will be seen doing the trapeze act to ensure the three-party government sustains. Patil, son of well-known Maharashtra leader the late Rajaram Patil, held key portfolios like finance, home and rural development from 1999 to 2014 when the Congress-NCP combine ruled the state. Eknath Shinde: Shinde (55) is the most prominent face of the Sena in the adjoining Thane city from where has been elected consecutively four terms to the assembly. Considered a troubleshooter in the Sena, Shinde was the PWD minister in the previous BJP-led government (2014-19. Subhash Desai: One of the confidants of Uddhav Thackeray, Desai (77) is currently an MLC. The senior-most member of the cabinet had been a member of the assembly three times. Now serving his third term in the upper house of the legislature, Desai was the industries minister in the 2014-19 BJP-Sena government. Balasaheb Thorat: Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat (66) took charge of the party's state unit at a difficult time. When Thorat became the Maharashtra Congress chief in July this year, the party was already staring down the barrel after its Lok Sabha poll debacle in the state, once its citadel. It could win only one seat in the general election and was relegated to inferior position than its ally, the NCP. The Congress (44) though fared better in the Assembly elections, winning two more seats than its 2014 tally. The result may not be satisfactory for the party, which led the state several times in the past, a trusted lieutenant of the party's central leadership, Thorat ensured proper co-ordination in the state unit hit by factionalism. Thorat, known for maintaining a low profile, was first elected as an MLA from Sangamner in 1985 as an independent. In 1990, he contested Assembly poll on a Congress ticket and this is his eighth term as a legislator. He became a minister of state in 1999 and was promoted as a cabinet minister in 2004. The Congress legislature party leader has held revenue, agriculture, water conservation and protocol portfolios in the past. Nitin Raut: A key leader of the Congress from its erstwhile bastion of Vidarbha in eastern Maharashtra, Raut (62) is a four-term MLA. He is national chairman of the Congress's Scheduled Caste department and one of the working presidents of the party in Maharashtra. Hailing from Nagpur, Raut, too, comes with past experience in government. He has held animal husbandry, employment guarantee and water conservation departments so far.

The Finance Minister had presented the interim budget in February. Stating that the budget has important provisions to help women and unemployed youth to stand on their own feet, the Chief Minister said that "Chief Minister Majhi Laadki Baheen scheme, free vocational education to girl students, Chief Minister Annapoorna scheme which gives 3 cylinders per year to eligible families, project worth Rs 15 thousand crores for providing free electricity to farmers during day time, Chief Minister Baliraja electricity concession scheme which provides free power to farmers using agricultural pumps, training to 50 thousand youth every year to convey government schemes to masses and resolve to remove poverty of the weaker sections of the society have made this budget special." He said that provisions like free education to girl students for engineering, pharmacy, and medical education along with degree and diploma courses along with Rs. 1500 per month to every woman prove that the government has expressed its responsibility towards women of the state. Stating that the budget proves that it stands behind the farmers, Chief Minister Shinde said that the issue of food-grain storage would be resolved through schemes like Godown per village. He said that the lives of farmers would be transformed through various provisions in the budget which include financial assistance to cotton and soybean growers, special campaigns to complete irrigation projects, and solar pumps on demand. He said that the budget provides Rs 20,000 to every Dindi (the troops participating in the annual Pandharpur pilgrimage) and it has made the announcement of making arrangements for medical treatment of pilgrims through the Chief minister's medical relief cell and provision for Nirmal Waari show commitment towards the annual pilgrim and Warkari sect. He said that a separate Warkari Mahamandal or separate Corporation for the annual pilgrims would be set up. Stating that massive investment would be made in priority sectors and the <keyword id="21313056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-hydrogen-sector" source="keywords">green hydrogen sector</keyword>, he said that it would generate employment in a big way. He said that the chief minister's youth training scheme would impart training to ten lakh youngsters every year and a centre of excellence would be established in ITI's which would benefit the youngsters. Stating that the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar scheme and Shrawan Bal seva state pension scheme assistance would be raised are strong steps CM Shinde said that providing for housing of various sections of society, Anand Dighe housing scheme for differently abled amply proves that the state government is taking strong steps towards removing the poverty in the state. The chief minister said that Metro routes worth 449 Kms in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur along with 23 thousand kilometer road stretch works under Chief Minister Gram Sadak scheme, construction of buildings of village Panchayats under Balasaheb Thackeray memorial Matoshree Gram Panchayat scheme, PM e-bus scheme in municipal corporation areas and other infrastructure works would be undertaken in a big way which would result in speedy development of the state. The monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly began on Thursday (June 28) and will go on till July 12. This is the last legislative session before the state assembly polls, in the next four months.

He also rejected Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray's claim that the BJP agreed to share the CM's post with the ally, saying Prime Minister Modi many times and he "at least 100 times" said in public during the Assembly polls campaign that Devendra Fadnavis will again head the government if the saffron alliance gets a majority. Reacting to it, Raut said, "Had Shah informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about this decision of '50:50 formula' in time, we would not have been facing this situation today." "I heard Modi (during poll campaigns) saying that Fadnavis will continue as the chief minister of Maharashtra, but we maintained the decorum and did not object it as we did not see it as a political message to us," he said. "I wonder whether Modi was kept away by top BJP leaders from the decision taken between the BJP and Shiv Sena over seat-sharing," the Rajya Sabha member said. He said Shah and Thackeray had met at the latter's residence in Mumbai (in February before the Lok Sabha polls). "It was the drawing room of late Balasaheb Thackeray, but for us it is a temple. The talks were held in the temple. If someone says no promises were made, it is an insult of the temple, Balasaheb Thackeray and Maharashtra," Raut said, adding that the room is a "holy place" for Shiv Sainiks. Shah, in a statement on Wednesday, did not touch upon the details of the agreement between the two allies of 30 years, saying it is not the values of the BJP to bring to public what has been discussed in private. Hitting out at Shah's remarks, Raut said, "When a promise made behind closed door is not kept, then only it comes out. We never trade in politics nor we see politics from the angle of profit or loss. We are making it public because it is about our self-respect." President's rule was imposed in the state on Tuesday after Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari sent a report to the Centre, stating that formation of a stable government was impossible in the current situation despite all his efforts. The BJP and Shiv Sena, which fought the October 21 state polls in alliance, secured a comfortable majority by winning 105 and 56 seats, respectively, in the 288-member Assembly. But the BJP did not cede the Sena's demand of sharing the chief minister's post, leading to falling apart of the nearly three-decade-old alliance. The Congress and NCP won 44 and 54 seats, respectively, in the last month's polls. After the imposition of President's rule in the state, the Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP leaders on Wednesday held hectic parleys to work out a 'common minimum programme' for government formation.

An ace photographer, he is the third Sena Chief Minister, after Manohar Joshi and Narayan Rane (both in 1990s), and the first member of the Thackeray family to hold the top post in the country's richest state. Thackeray, 59, otherwise considered an affable, mild- mannered politician, displayed combative traits of his father, Sena founder Bal Thackeray, in dealing with one-time senior ally BJP on the demand for rotational chief ministership just after assembly poll results were announced on October 24. He stood his ground and refused to budge on the issue of splitting the chief ministership, a stand that eventually led to the collapse of the three-decade old saffron alliance. After outmaneuvering the BJP, Thackeray will now have to prove his credentials as a leader who can navigate a new political path with ideologically different parties like the Congress and the NCP, partners in the Sena-led ruling coalition, the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Though in politics for long, Thackeray has never contested an election or held a public post and it will be interesting to watch how he learns the ropes of governance in a state which is an economic powerhouse and home to the financial capital of the country. The Sena, a party identified with Hindutva politics and "anti-Congressism" since its inception, has entered a new phase where it will have to chart out a new course under Thackeray in the changed political scenario. Born on July 27, 1960 in Mumbai, Thackeray studied at Balmohan Vidyamandir and later graduated from the JJ School of Arts, where photography was his main subject. Besides being a published author, he is also a professional photographer whose work has appeared in various magazines and has been showcased at numerous exhibitions. Thackeray largely lived in the shadows of his legendary father before coming on his own after being appointed the Sena working president in January 2003. Thackeray formally took over as the chief of the Sena, founded in 1966 to fight for the rights of Marathi people, after his father died in 2012. Known for his passion for photography, he started out in the advertising field by setting up an agency called 'Chaurang'. Thackeray specialises in aerial and wildlife photography. He has two photo books to his credit, 'Maharashtra Desh' (2010) on the forts of the state, and 'Pahava Vitthal' (2011) on the Pandharpur wari (on pilgrimage to the temple town of Pandharpur). 'Maharashtra Desh' is full of breathtaking aerial shots, providing a glimpse into the cultural fabric, physical beauty and historical perspective of this wondrous state. A few years ago, he organised an exhibition of his photographs and Rs 10 lakh collected from their sale was donated for farmer causes. Like former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, who started out in politics by helping his mother Indira Gandhi, Thackeray began assisting his father at a time when the firebrand Sena patriarch was aging and the party's sphere was expanding. He focused on strengthening the organisation and encouraged cadres to take up issues of farmers in the suicide- prone districts of rural Maharashtra. Thackeray sought to make the Sena, known for street politics and aggressive stand on issues of public interest, more acceptable to people outside its core voter base. After completing his journey from 'Matoshree', the Thackeray home in suburban Bandra, to 'Varsha', the CM residence in south Mumbai, the Sena leader will have to reinvent himself, according to political observers. He will now have to display flexibility and political acumen to deal with new-found allies and keep the coalition government going for five years, they said. "Despite being in government, the three parties are independent entities and would want to expand their respective political base," the observers said. "A political affairs committee would be needed to identify constituencies where the Sena and the Congress-NCP are in direct contest with each other and prevail upon the local leadership to work out an arrangement where political base of the three parties remains unaffected," a senior Congress leader said. While Thackeray has shown political sagacity and maturity till now, he will also have to deal with an aggressive BJP in the opposition knowing very well the former ally will try to make functioning for his government difficult, the observers said. "Uddhav will have to keep his flock of MLAs together," they said. Over 20 years ago, Thackeray was seen as a 'reluctant' politician, living a cosy life with his wife Rashmi and sons Aaditya (now an MLA) and Tejas at 'Matoshree'. But now that he has taken plunge into governance and managing a disparate coalition, a slew of challenges await Thackeray, who will be one of the most closely watched politicians in the country in these media-driven times. Since the Sena leader is currently not a legislator, he will have to get elected either to the legislative assembly or the council within six months of taking oath.
