The mission will attempt a soft landing on a high plain between two of the Moon’s craters on the South Pole — Manzinus C and Simpelius N. It is expected to last a total of 15 days once ISRO successfully lands on the Moon. Even Gangayaan is unlikely to get off the ground in 2020. Sivan did not disclose a launch date for the mission other than it will happen "very soon". According to ISRO, it will only take three days to prepare for an SSLV launch as compared to the months it takes to prepare for launches using other rockets. "The small satellite ecosystem is expanding at an accelerated pace," according to ResearchAndMarkets <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/global-small-satellite-launch-services-market-h1-2019---2033---growing-demand-for-launch-and-the-onset-of-scheduled-dedicated-launch-services-300964484.html">report</a>. India is one of the players in the market that sees the demand for more rideshare capacity. It plans to meet the upcoming demand by providing dedicated services and launch flexibility. Even though the details of the rocket haven’t been officially disclosed, it has already landed its first customer — Spaceflight. The company bought a payload aboard the SSLV in August. The upgraded variant of the GSLVs, the GSLV Mk III, is capable of launching 4-tonne class of satellites. This is also India’s 73rd launch mission from SDSC. Take-off after tweaked countdown The 24-hour countdown began a little later than scheduled at 6:43 on Sunday evening because ISRO was reportedly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/isro-scientists-tweak-chandrayaan-2-countdown-to-avoid-the-number-13/articleshow/70324534.cms">superstitious about avoiding Rahu Kalaam.</a> Chandrayaan 2 received authorisation of the launch from the mission director 18 minutes ahead of the launch following which the vehicle director and cryo chief will authorised the vehicle operations sequence. During the launch's initial stage, the S200 burners are ignited on ground. Following which the L1 10 rocket was ignited, one of the primary engines of the GSLV Mark III vehicle. The S200's subsequently separated after which the launch was under close loop guidance which was followed by the vehicle's shedding its heat shields. The cryogenic stage then ignited and performance was reported as normal at 204 kms around 405 minutes into the launch. The crygenic stage burnt out after 8 more minutes and the satellite successfully separated from the launch vehicle to enter geostationary transfer orbit (GTO). The Chandrayaan 2 will undergo 15 crucial maneuvers before actually landing on the Moon’s South Pole. Chandrayaan 2’s journey through space Chandrayaan 2 is going to attempt a soft landing on the Moon’s South Pole — one of the most cratered lunar surfaces. K.  In a press conference late, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) officially declared that it wouldn't be possible for Chandrayaan 2 to make the launch window. "A technical snag was noticed. We first have to approach the vehicle to assess the problem. First we have to empty the fuel loaded in the rocket, then the rocket will be taken back for further investigation," an ISRO official told IANS. "This process will take 10 days after that only we can decide on the launch schedule," he added. This makes it the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/isros-moon-mission-chandrayaan-2-halted-yet-again/articleshow/68737760.cms">seventh time</a> that India has tried to get Chandrayaan 2 off the ground but circumstances have gotten in the way.  Even though there was a slight drizzle at the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, the space agency said it would have no impact on the launch. But amid conducting final checks, the countdown clock was paused at 56 minutes leaving onlookers wondering what had gone wrong. India’s Chandrayaan 2 gets delayed due to a technical snag, pausing countdown at 56 mins

 Ironically Mission Mangal's <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/bollywood/akshay-kumar-on-mission-mangal-my-film-2-0-had-a-budget-of-500-crore-india-s-mars-mission-cost-less-than-that/story-bQBoxtyvC1ewHgJXNRhYFN.html">budget</a> is more than that of the actual Mars mission at ₹5 billion (₹500 crore), according to Kumar. But unlike the movie, the story of Mangalyaan doesn't quite end happily ever after. Defying the odds Mission Mangal's trailer shows that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had proposed a budget ₹8 billion (₹ 800 crore) to launch Mangalyaan but were only allotted a little more than half that amount for the project. <div type="image" title="mom_edited" msid="70498449" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;First image of the Earth by MCC of Mars Orbiter Spacecraft taken on Nov 19, 2013&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>

 Innovation and jugaad (cheap quick fix solutions to problems) did help turn the mission. This is in spite of the fact that its ‘chances of success were less than 1%'. And, while Mission Mangal seems to highlight the obstacles that India had to overcome in order to launch Mangalyaan — it could fail to illustrate the fact that it came at a cost. Cost of science In the movie, the project team worries about getting the payloads aboard the rocket. In typical movie fashion, the narrative seems to be skewed towards how they finally managed to ‘fix' it. In reality, ISRO had to drastically cut down on the instruments it had planned to send to Mars because it lacked a rocket with the requisite capacity. Technology like the ‘<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-most-powerful-launcher-will-carry-chandrayaan-2-on-moon-mission/articleshow/70202043.cms">Bahubali</a>' GSLV-Mark III heavy launch vehicle which recently launched the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/heres-why-chandrayaan-2-is-landmark-moon-mission-for-india/articleshow/69842571.cms">Chandrayaan 2</a> mission into space wasn't available back in 2013. Instead, India used its lighter PSLV XL launch vehicle — originally built for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-were-the-challenges-with-chandrayaan-1/articleshow/70202192.cms">Chandrayaan 1</a> and the largest available rocket at the time — to reach Mars. <div type="image" title="pslv-c25-23 (1)_edited" msid="70498392" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Mangalyaan&amp;#39;s PSLV XL C25 rocket taking off in 2013&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>

 A smaller rocket also meant that it could only carry so much weight. Mangalyaan's payload was only 15 kilograms and it could only take five payloads along.  To put it in perspective, US' National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) had five years to work on Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (<keyword id="443648" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MAVEN">MAVEN</keyword>) — which launched a mere 13 days after MOM. It had a capacity of 65 kilograms, carried eight payloads and cost a total of $671 million. And so, its contribution towards scientific advancement and the understanding of Mars was also much higher. Mangalyaan, on the other hand, the aim was just to get there. ISRO, in the past, stated that Mangalyaan was merely a technology demonstration mission to show India's capabilities in outer space technology. In that sense, it could be termed successful, yet its contribution to understanding the elusive planet, is quite less. Bollywood’s badshaah and Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan has donated Rs one crore for the victims of Chennai flood. 
 According to sources, Shah Rukh, who will be seen with Kajol in his upcoming film '<keyword id="1665132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dilwale">Dilwale</keyword>', has contributed the sum to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund. 
 In the wake of <keyword id="493481" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="chennai-floods">Chennai floods</keyword>, many Indian actors such as Rana Daggubati of 'Bahubali' fame, and sports persons such as Saina Nehwal and Dipika Pallikal, have come forward to help the flood victims. 
 About 280 people have died so far across <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> since torrential rains on December 1 submerged tracts of Chennai and caused havoc and devastation.

If you are crazy about seafood, you must visit this place. Well if you are not, you can still consider visiting Sanadige just as a tribute to the Southern part of India and its culture after having watched Bahubali II recently. <div type="image" title="1" msid="58776985" hostid="261"></div>

 Sanadige stands for the brass lamp that is lit on special occasions during any Kannada ceremony. And when you enter Sanadige, the lavishly earthy restaurant, the lamp will guide you to the table. For a location, where property prices skyrocket, Sanadige occupies two levels of dining, which is a clear indication of the seriousness of the business in the minds of the promoters. On any random day, you would find bureaucrats and embassy people lunching at Sanadige. The interior is well done and would remind you of a Kannada theatre. With wood engraved sculptures that depict fishermen returning home and boatmen selling for their catch, this place takes you to a faraway land where you can relish a candlelight dinner with your love forgetting about other anxieties of mundane city life. Yes it’s that surreal. Wait for the food to arrive at your table if you weren’t convinced much. We started our gastronomic sojourn with Anjal Tawa Fry, Chicken Ghee Roast, Prawn Butter Pepper Garlic, <keyword id="4557979" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mamsa">Mamsa</keyword> pepper fry and Baby corn Butter Pepper Garlic. For the non-initiated ones, Anjal is king mackerel and Mamsa is an enormous sized fish found in backwater. Sanadige specializes in Mangalorean cuisine, so it’s pretty obvious that there would be a lot of Southern spices. And taste wise, the fried fillet of Anjal tasted heavenly. The prawns were fresh and tender. On inquiring, we learnt, the fishes and prawns are flown everyday from Bangalore. No wonder, they charge accordingly. The mercury level being too high, we cooled ourselves with Guava Pepper Mocktail and Tender Coconut Mojito. <div type="image" title="3" msid="58776986" hostid="261"></div>

 The main course was a blissful spread of Vegetable Stew, Goan Fish Curry, Koan Kundapuri, Chemmeen Ularthiyathu and Mangalorean Mutton Curry. These might sound quite cliché when it comes to experimentation with southern cuisine but these tasted delicious. Not an ounce of overpowering spices and balanced coconut flavour made each of dishes retain the accuracy. <div type="image" title="5" msid="58776987" hostid="261"></div>

 While we weren’t really dessert people, on insistence of the waiter, we thought of sampling payasam, the signature ending of any southern meal. But no this payasam isn’t the regular one. The payasam is way different – with tender coconut pulp and coconut cream combined neatly, this was actually theobroma, the food of gods. <ul><li> The Kerala cabinet has approved ₹1.3 crore ($180,000) as compensation to for S <keyword id="1371628" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nambi-Narayanan">Nambi Narayanan</keyword> who was falsely accused of being a spy.</li><li>It took Narayanan over two decades to find justice after being tortured during his nearly 2-month detention in 1994.</li><li>This highest compensation that Narayanan has received after he petitioned the Supreme Court, which allotted ₹50 lakh in 2018. </li></ul>S Nambi Narayanan believes that he could’ve been the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He was instrumental in developing a mechanism which was used in 'Bahubali' rocket that launched Chandrayaan 2.  Inadequate compensation In 1994, Narayan was accused of stealing classified information and sharing it with Pakistan. Though he was cleared of all allegations in by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Supreme Court in 1998 — only ₹1 lakh was offered in compensation. Disappointed with the treatment meted out to him, Narayanan approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to seek damages for the torture and mental agony that he had to endure during his 50-day incarceration.

To compensate him for the unlawful detention, the Kerala cabinet has now approved ₹1.3 crore ($180,000) as compensation. The road to becoming ISRO chairman Before the scandal broke, Narayanan was on the road to success at ISRO. “I could have become the chairman of ISRO, without any doubt, but I am not sad. What is sad is that because of my dream job, I did not take care of my family,” he said in an interview with <a href="https://theprint.in/india/governance/the-spy-who-wasnt-space-scientist-nambi-narayanan-fought-for-his-innocence-for-24-years/118914/">The Print</a>.

During his stint at ISRO, Narayan is credited for developing India’s first liquid-propellant motor. The motor forms the backbone for the advanced cryogenic engine, which now powers India’s ‘<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/why-chandrayaan-2-will-take-7-weeks-to-reach-moon/articleshow/70346159.cms">Bahubali</a>’ rocket — the Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV). It is the biggest rocket in India’s portfolio and is responsible for missions like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/chandrayaan-2-fails-in-the-final-seconds-of-descent-to-moons-south-pole/articleshow/71018196.cms">Chandrayaan 2</a>, India’s second mission to the Moon.

 Accused of being a spy Narayanan says that the authorities not only tortured him during his nearly 2-month arrest but also coerced false confessions out of him. At the time, the investigators stated that Narayanan had “been wanting to quit his job for the past two years,” according to <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/magazine/special-report/story/19941231-key-questions-about-spy-scandal-remain-unanswered-month-after-spy-ring-exposed-810101-1999-11-30">India Today</a>. At the time, he never realised that clearing his name would take another two decades. Even former President and rocket scientist APJ Abdul Kalam told him to give up, but Narayanan claims that he had made it his life’s mission to prove that it was not a spy.

 Here comes the Padma Bhushan In 2018, justice finally came. The Supreme Court ruled he was “arrested unnecessarily, harassed and subjected to mental cruelty” finally clearing him of all charges. The verdict also directed that a committee should be set to look into the activities of the police officers behind the arrest. In January 2019, Narayanan’s contributions to India’s space programme were finally recognised when the government awarded him the Padma Bhushan — the third-highest civilian award in the country.

An Indian rocket scientist lost 25 years falsely accused of being a spy— now he will get $180,000 as compensation

 Precisely, why Yepme has not only extended contract with their superstar face <keyword id="6357753" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="shahrukh-khan">Shahrukh Khan</keyword>, but it has also roped in south Indian heart-throb <keyword id="6370559" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tamanna">Tamanna</keyword>, who became well known in the north recently after she set the box office on fire with Bahubali. The duo will be seen vouching for Yepme's brand new ethnic line in a short film that will flash on your screens from November 1. The timing of launch of ethnic collection has been kept just when the festive season would kick in. 
 
"Apart from the ethnic collection, we are getting into three more distinct areas- premium party wear, active wear and inner wear. The plan is to bring party wear by end of this year (around December when the party spirits are high) and inner wear by Sept-Oct next year which is an altogether new segment for us," said Vivek, adding that the company is eyeing vertical growth and wants to go beyond just offering western casual wear to customers. 
 At the moment, Yepme is deriving 15-20 per cent benefits in the ongoing Big Billion Days and festive season sale on <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> as a result of being positioned among famous brands like Benetton on the featured banners of e-commerce websites. It, however, aims to cash in more from its presence on these portals once its brand becomes salient. 
 
By virtue of being an online fashion retailer and not an e-commerce website per say, Yepme is not competing with the likes of Snapdeal. "Unlike them, we don't spend money on discounting and schemes. We want customers to come to us not for cheap pricing or discounts but for the brand," says Vivek. 
 
He explains:"On every product that I ship, I make 20-25 per cent margin. That pays for my fixed cost apart from covering the delivery and product cost. So all these costs are covered by way of selling. And all the money that I raise goes into advertising and building the brand. That's how I have a Shahrukh in my TV ads." 
 
With so much investment in building the brand, Vivek aspires to make Yepme global by shaping it as a million dollar brand by 2020. 
 
But there’s no hurry. The prime agenda is to first make India a profitable market for Yepme’s line of products. And that’s not a difficult task for an Indian company at this time. Rivals such as the likes of H&amp;M have to manufacture in India and Bangladesh and ship products back to their country. But for an in house newbie like Yepme wanting to become a fashion brand in the country, the game is sort of easy, or so it seems for now. 
 
With a huge textile base, large garment manufacturing base, technology as good as in the US, excellent resource from fashion institutes to create designs and IITians to analyse fashion trends and behavior- everything is under the same roof. 
 
"We are tapping it. Once your home becomes a big market, there is an aspiration value for your product across countries," says Vivek. 
 
In light of the above facts, why can't the next H&amp;M or Zara be from India!

Exclusive: Yepme to soon launch a Zara-like brand in India!

They say there is no business like the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Mid-year-assessment-It-was-a-roller-coaster-ride-for-Bollywood/articleshow/47830513.cms">movie business</a> and indeed every Friday we have at least one new movie tossed at the audience. And by Sunday, we get to know whether the movie will be a hit, a miss or just an average fare. 
	 
	So far, 2015 has been quite an interesting year from Bollywood’s perspective. Why I say so is because on one hand we had magnanimous opus like Baahubali achieving great success and on the other, there were small budget movies such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Relive-the-90s-with-Dum-Laga-Ke-Haisha/articleshow/46395043.cms">Dum Laga Ke Haisha</a>, NH10 and Badlapur, that managed to swoon the audiences and the critics. 
	 
	Sequels like Tanu Weds Manu Returns managed to outshine their last offering and then we had Piku that conveyed human emotions in a brilliant way and also got the cash register ringing.

	So should we conclude that the era for clichéd, formula-based movies, is coming to an end? 
	 
	Not really as in 2015, we had movies like Hero, Tevar, Roy, etc that banked on the predictable story line to woo the audience and managed to garner mixed acceptance. 
	 
	But, if we see a larger picture, new concepts with small budgets and strong script are doing well. 
	 
	The success of Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Tanu Weds Manu Returns and last year’s Queen hinted that directors and storytellers should venture with newer concepts to engage and entertain the audience. 
	 
	To this trend, Komal Nahata, trade analyst, said, “I would not like to say that there is a trend shift that is happening. From the past three-four years we have seen some small budget movies doing pretty well. The market for such films is also growing. Earlier they used to do well only in certain multiplexes, then it grew to few cities but now in pockets pan-India, they do well.” 
	 
	While it is true that there are quite a few experimental movies that are being screened, but multiple sources in the industry, on conditions of anonymity, told us that about 60-75% of the movies that go on the floor never see light of the day. 
	 
	 
	 
	A lot of these movies are actually finished products but fail to make it to cinema halls as the distributors are unwilling to buy them or the producer has lost confidence in the movie and does not want to spend more money in promoting them. 
	 
	Despite of the fact that some movies do well in global markets, they are not released in India. The movies that have found place in this list include Peddlers, The Coffin Maker, Dekh Indian Circus, etc. 
	 
	Mind you, not all of these shelved movies have lesser known faces as their star cast. The Coffin Maker stars Naseeruddin Shah while Nawazuddin Siddiqui features in Dekh India Circus. 
	 
	Siddiqui said, “It is rather unfortunate that a lot of content-oriented movies in India are still struggling to get funding in the country and there are a few completed projects that are not able to secure a release. Not just Dekh India Circus, there are a few more of my movies that are currently not released and I have started taking more commercial projects since last year with the hope that if I become a little more known face, it will be easier for my directors and producers to get the pending projects released.” 
	 
	And off-beat movies that managed to secure a release, had to face a tough time in the process. 
	 
	For instance, Shonali Bose’s “Margarita With a Straw”, which has Kalki Koechlin as the leading lady, garnered accolades at Toronto International Film Festival and Koechlin also bagged the best actress award at The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2014. After much delays, the movie finally released to Indian audience on April 17, 2015.

	Unfortunately, not all the movies are lucky as this one. There are quite a few of these Bollywoods' lost children that fail to get a screen space in the midst of high-brow glitterati. 
	 
	I managed to see the world premiere of one such movie in the very heart of London’s film world. Being a movie enthusiast, I had heard a lot about London’s prestigious Raindance Film Festival and it was quite a coincidence that I managed to see a Bollywood movie listed as an `official selection’. 
	 
	Curiosity got the better of me and I reached just in the nick of the time to see ‘Peter Gaya Kaam Se’ (PGKS) (aka The Goa Run). The super plush Vue Cinema in Piccadilly Circus was almost full and the first theatrical screening for this lost Bollywood baby was a complete entertainment package. 
	 
	John Owens' action packed adventure tells the story of a motorcycle taxi driver from Goa (Rajeev Khandelwal) who falls in love with Mira, a beautiful and beguiling drug smuggler from London (Lekha Washington). This out and out commercial flick was originally produced by UTV Spotboys but got shelved and largely forgotten during Disneys' protracted takeover of the company. 
	 
	Director John Owen, who has worked in India for many years as one of MTV and Channel [V]’s head honchos, had penned and directed this story. The movie was shot extensively in Goa and took about a month to complete. It turns out that, the Raindance founder Elliot Grove took a personal interest in the film. 
	 
	 
	 
	Says Owen, "Raindance loved the film and were determined to host the world premiere, especially as I am the first Brit to direct a Bollywood film. A fact that makes me very proud. So when Disney finally gave permission I flew over to Mumbai, finished the sound work we had pending at my cost, did the subtitles myself and had a high end digital print made. The quality of the screening was just superb.” 
	 
	Raindance is in its 22nd year and has become one of the world’s premiere film festivals and very highly thought of by the industry itself. 
	 
	Owen adds, "We didn’t have any money to promote the screening so it was all word of mouth and the buzz of social media. People came from all over the country, it was amazing." 
	 
	Ironically, on the very same weekend Disney's Khoobsurat was premiering in the UK and I could see a theatre just across the street in London's Leicester Square showing it. 
	 
	When I put this point across to Owen, he chuckled and said, "It's funny because Shashanka Ghosh and I have been friends since our MTV days. I stayed with him when I was over in Mumbai fixing up the film in September and we joked about him being Disney's loved and me being their unloved child.” 
	 
	Given the response this movie managed to get sans any promotion and that too in London, I was curious to know what plans Owen or Disney have for this movie. Owen shared that some high-flying industry folks were amongst the excited audience and they saw real potential for the film in the UK and the US. 
	 
	No wonder, UK distributors are showing interest in the movie. Even in India PGKS is well-liked amongst industry insiders who were given personal screenings by the director. After all, the film does come with some pedigree. Anurag and Abhinav Kashyap were `creative producers' and UTV’s top producer on the job at the time was the visionary Vikas Bahl (who has given movies such as Chiller Party and Queen). So, what happens now to Peter Gaya Kaam Se? 
	 
	Owen picks on a philosophical note and shares, "It's all about love and timing. PGKS came along at the wrong time in the marriage of UTV and Disney. So, it’s the unwanted child. A bit like how Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire was for Warner Brothers. Warners’ just didn’t like the film so they let Danny go off and find a new home with Fox Searchlight. Fox loved the film, supported Danny, and made Slumdog a massive box office success. The film industry does not work like a science. Sometimes it comes down to personal taste. When I get depressed about the whole thing I think of Danny and Slumdog and get inspired all over again.” 
	 
	While Owen never had the resources or connections to find buyers for PGKS, on its own, he is looking to crowd funding and other ways to get this movie to be released.

	It is noteworthy, that UTV Spotboys was the pioneer of small budget, content-oriented movies in India. 
	 
	Khosla Ka Ghosla was one of the first movies in this genre that was produced under UTV Motion Pictures. Later between 2008 and 2009, under the UTV Spotboys banner, they released movies such as Dev D, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Welcome to Sajjanpur, A Wednesday, Mumbai Meri Jaan and Aamir. All these movies managed to get a fair share of success at the ticket window. 
	 
	 
	 
	Another coincidence worth pointing out in the case of Peter Gaya Kaam Se is that it went on floor almost at the same time as Paan Singh Tomar. 
	 
	The latter, too, was produced by UTV Spotboys and managed to get a release on March 2, 2012, almost four years after it was complete and it managed to be a box office success largely due to word of mouth. 
	 
	The bigger coincidence is that Paan Singh Tomar, too, was premiered at the 2010 British Film Institute London, almost two years before its domestic release. 
	 
	We spoke to Rucha Pathak on why it was such a challenge to make a movie like Paan Singh Tomar. 
	 
	Pathak was the associate producer of Paan Singh Tomar and Sr. Creative Director at UTV (now Disney India) when this film was being made and is now Head of Creative &amp; Development at Fox Star Studios. 
	 
	“The main challenges we faced while trying to make Paan Singh Tomar was that because it was probably the first time a film like this was being made people did not realise what it was going to be like and it was therefore completely against the trend in those days,” she said. 
	 
	Also we could not help ask her if is it really possible to get any small budget movie out there in the market to which she answered, “It is difficult to release small and medium budget films these days but not impossible. I think if one can find the right marketing budget and the right target audience that you want to reach out to, then it’s possible to release a film. It is really critical these days to make films at the right budget and market films at the right budget. Once that is under control then I believe one can get a film out to reach an audience that it is meant for.” 
	 
	While Pathak emphasised on the budgeting bit, Nahata feels, “Exhibition or the release strategy is very detrimental to the business of content driven movies. The moment there is a big movie coming in, they are thrown out. Most such movies need time for the word of mouth to pick up.”

The distributors today are looking for instant gratification. They would expect the movie to have 80 to 90% occupancy rates for its release Friday itself. If the movie does not show results by Sunday, then on Monday it is thrown out. This was not really the case earlier. I still remember when Maine Pyaar Kiya released, it had just one cinema hall in Mumbai, later when the word of mouth spread, the movie was given more space and it was a such a huge hit,” shares Ami Shah, co-founder and creative director of IntelliAssist (a company that has handled social media mandates for Bollywood movies). 
 
Indeed, distribution is one big challenge for small budget, content-oriented movies in India. However, Director Onir mentions that it is not the only one. Just to give you a perspective, Onir is an Indian film maker, who has churned out movies such as 'I AM, My Brother Nikhil’ and Bas Ek Pal. He had crowd funded his movie I AM, which released in 2010 and also bagged the national award for the same. 
 
Ask him if given a chance would he again crowd fund a movie or give any other director struggling for funds the same suggestion and he replies, “No it is one thing to make a movie and altogether another to get it to the cinema. Marketing a movie, especially a content-oriented one is a hard job.” 
 
I would agree with his point that it is tough nut to market a movie that does not have bankable stars. Like, Filmistaan, the 2014 movie was an endearing tale of wannabe actor, who gets kidnapped by terrorists and held in the home of a Pakistani who deals in pirated Hindi films. The tale captures how both of them bond over movies. 
 
The trailers of the movie looked very bland and I was not sure whether I would want to waste time watching this movie. Fortunately for me, one of my friend dragged me to this movie and I would admit that it was actually one of the best movies of 2014 that I managed to see and yes it did manage to win a national award as well. 
 
The cost of marketing in itself is quite high as well and it is not just important to buy ad space but also to connect right with your target audience. This is perhaps one lesson that the movie Queen managed to do well and of course the word of mouth helped it consolidate its position over a period of time. 
 
Onir also mentions that the government will have to play a greater role to help protect content-driven cinema in India. “The approach that our government takes is that they treat Bollywood as a business and not art. However, it will have to realize that like any art even movies need a bit of support”. In his opinion, there could be plenty of other avenues where movies can be showcased. 
 
Now talking about television, we have 24-hour movie channels that end up playing same movie almost every weekend. Most TV channels pick up movies that have done well on the box office, so that they don’t have to do much in terms of marketing and yet they can have good TRPs on their so-called “World Television Premiere”. It is a possibility that some of these movies that are left biting the dust, some might be ideal for the TV watching audience but so far these gems are not able to get any real support for this medium too. 
 
With the coming of 4G, it is expected that some of these movies might get a fresh lease of hope. There are producers and directors that are looking for alternative channels to monetize their movies via online ads and pay per view models. Currently none of them has been able to come out with a full proof plan and hence some great marvels of Hindi cinema continue to rot in their graves, while the others in the hands of resilient makers are fighting it hard to get to their audiences.
