While both restaurants and delivery partners are happy about it, city authorities are concerned about the rising plastic waste – be it bags, plastic boxes or containers that are used to pack food. After banning single-use plastics, Mumbai city authorities are making a move to curb the use of plastic boxes and containers for food deliveries. In a meeting with restaurant <a href="https://www.freepressjournal.in/mumbai/mumbai-no-food-deliveries-in-plastic-boxes">bodies this month</a>, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) suggested restaurants and hotels use steel containers instead. This, the city says, is phase II of their initiative to fight plastics, after a nation-wide ban on single-use plastics in July this year. ‘Want a practical eco-friendly solution’ Pradeep Shetty, senior vice president, <keyword id="4905471" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hotel-and-restaurant-association-of-western-india" source="Orion">Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India</keyword> (HRAWI) told Business Insider India that looking for alternate solutions was not easy as they scramble to satisfy their already-demanding customers’ need for speed with services like 10-minute delivery. Steel containers, Shetty says, are completely impractical. It will also double the cost of delivery. “The plastics used in restaurants are not one-time use. If they ban plastic containers, do they have an eco-friendly plan in place? Will the Indian customer base be willing to pay more for an eco-friendly alternative? Our country does not have a Starbucks clientele as customers who can afford Starbucks can pay for eco-friendly packaging,” said Shetty. That said, the food delivery ecosystem has been trying to transition to eco-friendly options but it’s still work in progress. Swiggy launched a packaging-assist programme in 2016 with the aim of partnering with restaurants across Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore, to provide eco-friendly packaging solutions. Swiggy did not respond to queries sent seeking an update on its five year old initiative. What’s the cost of saving the environment? While the transition to eco-friendly options is on the rise, it is slow and will take time for them to become mainstream and popular. The biggest challenge remains the prohibitive cost and limited availability of most eco-friendly options – be it reusable glass containers, bamboo or <keyword id="82169" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="edible-cutlery" source="Orion">edible cutlery</keyword>. Eco-friendly products can also be made out of Areca leaves, bamboo, birchwood, and biodegradable plastic called polylactic acid (PLA), said Devendra Agrawal, Founder of boutique investment bank Dexter Capital Advisors. Edible cutlery – made out of a mix of sorghum flour, rice flour and wheat flour – is another eco-friendly option that is seeing interest, he said. “Edible cutlery by being tasty, nutritious and environment-friendly, is setting new trends. This eliminates the need for disposal and recycling, thus being a great solution for sit-in restaurants,” said Agrawal. Restaurants and aggregators are taking baby steps towards adopting eco-friendly options. “What aggregators are doing is not revolutionary, they are merely promoting a packaging solution or a company. It’s the restaurants that are doing the packaging and we are trying to be as eco-friendly as possible as we have already done away with single-use plastics,” said Shetty. Change takes time and an adjustment in mindset. A lot of time, energy, investments and collaboration are needed for take-outs to become completely eco-friendly. Takeouts without plastics is impractical now say restaurants with ‘few or no’ eco-friendly options

Now, as more alternatives to conventional toilet paper enter the market, there are greater options for consumers who don't like the thought of wiping away all that sequestered carbon with every flush.Estimates <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jul/05/toilet-paper-less-sustainable-researchers-warn">vary</a>, but only about 25 to 30% of the world's population uses toilet paper. Many people use water. Shri Ramaswamy, a professor in the department of bioproducts and biosystems engineering at the University of Minnesota, said using the bagasse and preventing it from going to waste was, of course, a good thing. But if producers are slashing forests to grow the sugarcane, that's not a win for the climate."Just because it is nonwood, and they're not cutting trees, it doesn't mean it is sustainable," Ramaswamy said. He added, for example, that it's important to consider how much water goes into the production of a tree alternative to get a better sense of its environmental benefits. Meanwhile, the paper-products industry has continued to boost its overall use of recycled paper and reduce its use of some chemicals, Ramaswamy said.The Natural Resources Defense Council <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/sites/default/files/issue-with-tissue-2-report.pdf">recommends</a> that consumers look for the Forest Stewardship Council's "FSC" label to make sure, for example, that the bamboo used in toilet paper wasn't grown in places that were recently deforested. Mumbai, Mar 4 () Power sector PSUs in Maharashtraincurred an overall net loss of Rs 3328.13 crorein 2017-18,according to a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG)reporttabled in the state legislature on Wednesday.During 2017-18, out of the eight working state PSUs,one earned profit of Rs 814.51 crore, five incurred loss of Rs4142.64 croreand the remaining two posted marginal profit/loss, said the CAG report on public sector undertakings.The profit-making PSU was Maharashtra StateElectricity Transmission Company(Rs 814.51 crore), where asmajor losses were incurred byMaharashtra State electricityDistribution Company (Rs 3176.49 crore) and Maharashtra StatePower Generation Company (Rs 929.71 crore), the report said.Overall, power sector PSUs incurred a combined netloss of Rs 3328.13 crore(Rs 4142.64 crore minus Rs 814.51crore) in the financial year under review, it said.The CAG noted that the balance of investment of thestate government in the share capital of the power sectorPSUsincreased to Rs 88,086.99 crorein 2017-18 from Rs 0.45crore in 1999-2000.The present value of state government investments inthese entities up to March 31, 2018, worked out to be Rs1,18,570.22 crore, the auditor said.The report said Maharashtra State ElectricityDistribution Company made an excess payment of Rs 1.94 crorefor purchase of power from a bagasse-based co-generationproject due to incorrect application of energy tariff. Maha power PSUs post overall Rs 3,328 cr net loss in FY18: CAG

New Delhi, Dec 8 () Amid a growing debate over impact of single use plastics on environment, paper offers a sustainable option and can capture a fourth of the Rs 80,000 crore single use plastics market by 2025, if its use is totally banned by the government, a new study said.
India generated 26,000 tonnes per day of plastic waste in 2017-18, of that only 60 per cent was recycled and the rest ended up as litter on roads, in landfills or streams. Single use plastic industry is close to Rs 80,000 crore right now and growing. Packaging accounts for a third of India's plastic consumption, and 70 per cent of plastic packaging is turned into waste in a short span.
While uncollected plastic waste poses a huge threat to species on land and in water, single-use plastic bags and styrofoam containers can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, said the study released at the world's largest paper fair, PAPEREX organized by Hyve India, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Hyve Group Plc, London, last week.
Paper, on the other hand, is eco-friendly green product and bio-degradable, it said, adding it was a myth that the paper industries cut trees for production, and consumption of water and energy is high. Paper industry plants more trees than harvested and primary raw material are 100 per cent renewable like wood and agro-residues.
The study said about a third of new paper comes from recycled paper and an equivalent amount from waste such as sawdust and scrap from lumber mills.
"In India, companies use 46 per cent raw material from recovered paper, 29 per cent from agro residue like bagasse, straw etc and 29 per cent from plantation wood," it said, adding paper promotes literacy, hygiene and reduce pollution by using bagasse.
For production of one tonne paper, 2.1 tonne of wood is required but "no forest wood is being utilised for paper manufacturing," it said. "All (paper) mills are fulfilling their requirement through social forestry plantation on its own or through farmers."
More importantly, average cost of recycling of paper is Rs 32 per kg -- Rs 20 for cost of collecting paper trash and Rs 12 conversion cost. In comparison, the cost to collection of plastic waste is Rs 30 to 36 per kg and recycling is Rs 22 to Rs 35 per kg, it said, adding transporting one tonne of paper costs Rs 4.5 per kilometer as compared to Rs 6.2 in case of plastic.
Energy consumption for paper production is 0.59 to 1.19 tonne of oil equivalent per tonne as opposed to 1.48 to 2.58 a tonne in plastic, the study said, adding 55-60 per cent energy can be saved if paper is used in place of plastic.
According to Sanjeev Batra, Director, Hyve India, due to the fundamental and technological revolution, 100 per cent paper produced is recyclable and biodegradable.
"Paperex 2019 impressed upon the common man to save the environment and how this essential commodity use in our everyday life can reduce pollution and promote recycling," he said.
"Paper industry is going through the transformation phase and now the paper industry uses less power and water due to technological changes. Cost of production of recycled paper is at least 30 to 40 per cent cheaper depending upon the location than the recycled plastic," J P Narain, VP, Indian Paper &amp; Manufacturers Association and CEO of Century Paper said.
The requirement of better quality packaging products and the demand for other products, such as tissue paper, filter paper, tea bags and cardboard are expected to drive the paper and paper products market in India in the coming years, he said.
"There is a big opportunity for paper industry as single-use plastic market in India is close to Rs 80,000 crore. Paper industry is ready to take 25 per cent market share of single-use plastic by 2025 if totally banned by the government," he said.
Of the 9.1 billion tonnes of plastic that the world has produced since 1950, 6.9 billion tons has become waste, and only 9 per cent of that has been recycled, the rest ends up in landfills and in the world's oceans, the study said.
India's plastic consumption at 11 kg per capita is less than half of global average of 28 per kg. The US has per capita consumption of 109 kg, while it is 65 kg in Europe and 38 kg in China.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants India to eliminate single-use plastics by 2022, following on the footsteps of major nations around the world that are waging a war on them.
The study said chips and confectionery packets account for the largest share of plastic waste in India - 12 per cent of total plastic waste is bottle caps and lids, 19 per cent are chips and confectionery packets, 10 per cent are pet bottles, 8 per cent garbage bags and 8 per cent is packaging. What might sound like a funny incident, was actually a noble thought – the hotelier didn’t want to use plastic for <keyword id="6376068" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-delivery">food delivery</keyword>. While the Indian government might not have gone ahead with the <keyword id="6570438" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="single-use-plastic">single use plastic</keyword> ban, Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to eradicate the use of single-use plastics by 2022. And, it seems to have turned people wee bit conscious. If you order food online from Zomato, Swiggy, <keyword id="2960214" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ubereats">UberEats</keyword> or others, you would know about the plastic wrapping that comes along with the food – from the signature tape to plastic boxes. But aggregators are aware of the rising use of plastics by restaurant partners. Now, they are beginning to take up an active role. A marketplace for alternative packaging Two years back, Zomato was one of the first to come with an option called ‘don’t send cutlery’. The foodtech unicorn is also working with research-based start-ups and firms to introduce high quality, eco-friendly packaging. “For a wider use-case, we will soon be launching an online marketplace (akin to an e-commerce portal), employing our network of suppliers for restaurants to easily procure eco-friendly packaging. Packaging offered which will include a segment of 100% naturally biodegradable units, largely consisting of sugarcane bagasse, bamboo, palm leaf and paper solutions,” said a Zomato spokesperson. Taking charge Meanwhile, Swiggy has been running a marketplace called Swiggy Packaging Assist for over a year now. “Packaging Assist enables restaurant partners to get access to a variety of packing solutions including (but not limited to) eco-friendly packaging options made of materials such as paper and glass. Hundreds of our restaurant partners across cities have slowly started using greener packaging solutions when possible,” said a Swiggy spokesperson. Swiggy said that it took up Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for 100 tonnes of plastic a month, and will grow six times over in the next six months. Zomato and Swiggy’s rival – UberEats educates its restaurant partners about the importance of right packaging. “We firmly believe that food delivery platforms can play a major role to empower restaurants and local businesses with sustainable packaging and encourage implementation of economical, plastic free packaging / eco-friendly options,” said Uber Eats.
