Historically, India has been the largest consumer of sugar in the world but the focus on meeting that demand has led to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-could-soon-become-the-worlds-largest-sugar-producer-but-heres-why-thats-a-problem/articleshow/65657844.cms">surplus in the market.</a> Not only is the demand for ethanol higher, but it is a more profitable option as well. The main boon of the policy lies in the fact that India is the fourth largest producer and consumer of energy. And, ethanol, serves as an alternative fuel. Nitin Gadkari, the Union Transport Minister, made a <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/auto/switching-to-ethanol-cng-will-reduce-petrol-diesel-prices-in-india-bjp-union-minister-nitin-gadkari-1874025.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">statement</a> saying that switching over the alternative fuels like ethanol could serve as a important catalyst in driving down the prices of petrol and diesel that currently rising at an increasing pace. The new policy could be a boon to stabilise sugar prices, increase the income of farms and reduce India's dependency on foreign crude oil, all in one sweep. What are B-heavy molasses? Molasses are basically any fluid substance resulting from refining sugar cane into sugar. So far, mills only derived ethanol from C-heavy molasses because without remuneration backed by policy, using the B-heavy molasses wouldn’t be profitable. But with this policy allowing for a 25% increase in the price of ethanol from B-heavy molasses from ₹47.5 per litre to ₹52.43, <keyword id="6374174" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sugar-mills">sugar mills</keyword> have a margin they can rely on. Demand-supply disparity According to the India Sugar Mills Association, India is set to produce 35.5 million tonnes of sugar between October 2018 and September 2019 but the demand is only at 25 million tonnes. Even historically, reports <a href="http://www.indiansugar.com/PDFS/Kingsman_2016-final.pdf">show</a> that India sugar consumption has remained stable at around 20 kilos per capita a year. So, a decline in sugar output through incentivising B-heavy molasses might not only be good for the economy but a more sustainable solution as well. There are three crucial outcomes tied in with each other. One, the current level of sugar output will decrease leading to an increase in price. That will take the burden off the government who’s currently set the MSP at ₹29/kg, which is above the global average hurting the product’s export competitiveness. Two, the farmers who are owed money will quickly be remunerated. Currently, the debt is expected to reach around ₹30 billion if the output isn’t curbed. And, three, the economy would benefit as a whole since ethanol is more profitable and there is excess demand is waiting to be addressed. It also serves as an alternative fuel that could potentially reduce India's dependence on crude oil. And, addressing the price disparity of sugar would increase the global demand for sugar, a market that's currently sluggish as is.

India's curbing its sugar surplus by incentivising ethanol production

The government on Thursday permitted the use of sugarcane juice and sugar syrup for ethanol production in the 2024-25 ethanol supply year, reversing last year's ban. In December 2023, the government prohibited the use of sugarcane juice or sugar syrup for ethanol production in the 2023-24 ESY (December-November) to ensure adequate sugar availability for domestic consumption and keep prices in check. "Sugar mills and distilleries are allowed to produce ethanol from sugarcane juice/sugar syrup, B-Heavy molasses as well as C-Heavy molasses for ESY 2024-25 as per the agreement/allocation with OMCs (oil marketing companies)," the food ministry order said. The Food Ministry and Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry will periodically review the diversion of sugar for ethanol production vis-a-vis sugar production in the country to ensure year-round availability of sugar for domestic consumption, it added. India is the world's second largest sugar producing country after Brazil.

Sugar stocks soar as govt permits use of sugar in ethanol production; Triveni Engineering, Dhampur Sugar rally over 7%

Total number of 408 sugar mills in operation across the country as on November 30, 2020 have produced 42.90 lakh tonnes of sugar in the ongoing sugar season 2020-21 (October-September) as compared to 20.72 lakh tonnes produced by 309 sugar mills in the same period a year ago, said <keyword id="124503" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Sugar-Mills-Association">Indian Sugar Mills Association</keyword> (ISMA) in a release on Wednesday. According to industry body, <keyword id="115567" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sugar-production">sugar production</keyword> rose by 22.18 lakh tonnes or 107 per cent in the early two months of the current season as compared to last year because of earlier start of <keyword id="46885" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sugarcane">sugarcane</keyword> crushing this season. "Production trend in the current season so far, appears to be more or less similar to 2018-19, when 418 sugar mills had produced 40.69 lakh tonnes of sugar, except that the diversion of cane juice and B-molasses this season to ethanol will be much more, resulting in a net reduction of around 20 lakh tonnes of sugar," said ISMA. In Uttar Pradesh 111 sugar mills were crushing sugarcane on November 30, 2020 and have produced 12.65 lakh tonnes of sugar till that date. As per reports, about 28 mills are currently diverting B heavy molasses/cane juice for production of ethanol in the current season, while during the corresponding period last season, about 18-20 sugar mills were diverting B heavy molasses/cane juice. In Maharashtra, 158 sugar mills have started crushing operations as on November 30, 2020, as compared to 71 sugar mills which operated in the corresponding date of last year. Till November 30, 2020, sugar production in the state was 15.72 lakh tonnes, compared to 1.38 lakh tonnes in the previous year. The higher production is because of earlier start of crushing operations in Maharashtra and higher availability of sugarcane in this season, said the industry body. Currently, it is reported that about 55-60 sugar mills are diverting B-heavy molasses/cane juice for production of ethanol in the current season, as compared to about 25-30 sugar mills in the corresponding period last season. In Karnataka, 63 sugar mills were crushing on November 30, 2020 and 11.11 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced. During the corresponding period last year, 60 sugar mills were operating which had produced 5.62 lakh tonnes of sugar. About 28-30 sugar mills are currently diverting B-heavy molasses/cane juice for production of ethanol in the current season, as compared to about 15-18 sugar mills in the last season. In Gujarat, 15 sugar mills were operational as on November 30, 2020 and 1.65 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced, compared to 14 sugar mills which had produced 62,000 tonnes of sugar. Crushing operations in all the other states have also begun and the pace of crushing is picking up. About 61 sugar mills are operating in other states which have produced 1.77 lac tons in this season as on November 30, 2020, as compared to 53 mills which produced 1.64 lakh tonnes of sugar in the previous year. The average ex-mill sugar prices in most of the major states are reported to be declining with the commencement of current season w.e.f. October 2020, barring a few Northern states where the prices are more or less steady. In the two major states, Maharashtra and Karnataka, the ex-mill prices which were hovering around Rs 3,200-3,250 per quintal for last couple of months have gone down by almost Rs 50-100 per quintal. Similarly, in the Southern states also, the ex-mill prices have declined by a similar margin. This indicates pressure in domestic market due to high opening balance, expected increase in production in the current season, delayed export programme announcement by the Government and no decision yet on increase of MSP of sugar. India has produced twice the amount of sugar in the first 2 months of the current season

New Delhi, Dec 18 () India's sugar production stood at 4.58 million tonne till December 15 of the ongoing marketing year, down 35 per cent from the year-ago period, owing to sharp fall in output in Maharashtra and Karnataka, industry body ISMA said on Wednesday.
Sugar marketing year runs from October to September. Mills had manufactured 7.05 million tonne of sugar in the same period of the 2018-19 marketing year.
According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), 406 sugar mills were crushing sugarcane as on December 15, as against 473 mills on the year-ago same day.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh, the country's largest sugar producing state, have manufactured 2.12 million tonne of the sweetener till December 15, up from 1.89 million tonne in the year-ago period. The UP mills had begun crushing operations a week earlier in the current season.
However, there has been a sharp fall in production in Maharashtra, the country's second largest sugar producer. Mills were able to manufacture 7,66,000 tonne as against 2.9 million tonnes in the same period a year ago, ISMA said.
Similarly in Karnataka, the third largest sugar producing state, the production declined to 1.06 million tonne till December 15 of this year from 1.39 million tonne in the same period a year ago.
"The production in Maharashtra and Karnataka is lower than last year due to the fact that mills in these states started late by one month and one week, respectively," ISMA said in a statement.
Apart from this, sugar recovery so far is reported to be lower as compared to last year, mainly because mills are crushing damaged sugarcane due to floods, along with the fresh cane as also other climatic factors, it added.
Sugar output reached 1,52,000 tonne in Gujarat, 1,35,000 tonne in Bihar, 75,000 tonne in Punjab, 73,000 tonne in Tamil Nadu, 65,000 tonne in Haryana, 35,000 tonne in Madhya Pradesh and 30,000 tonne in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana combined, in the said period.
ISMA, which represents private millers, has pegged total sugar output to decline 21.5 per cent to 26 million tonne in the 2019-20 marketing year.
On ethanol supply to oil marketing companies (OMCs), the industry body said sugar mills and standalone distilleries have offered to supply 163 crore litres of ethanol in the year starting December 2019.
Of the total ethanol, 10.38 crore litres will be made from sugarcane juice, 62.58 crore litres from 'B' heavy molasses, 86.39 crore litres from 'C' heavy molasses and 3.78 crore litres from damaged foodgrains, it said.
The supply of 73 crore litres of ethanol from sugarcane juice and 'B' heavy molasses is almost double than what was supplied in 2018-19 and, therefore, the diversion of sugar into ethanol this season is higher, it added.
ISMA also said another tender is expected shortly from OMCs, against which more quantities of ethanol including ethanol made from 'B' heavy molasses and sugarcane juice, is expected to be offered for 2019-20. LUX ANU

Sugar output drops 35 pc to 4.58 mn tonne till Dec 15: ISMA

New Delhi, Feb 25 () Industry body ISMA on Tuesday revised the country's sugar production upward by two per cent to 26.5 million tonnes for the ongoing 2019-20 marketing year, much lower than last year but enough to meet the local demand. It may be noted that a senior Food Ministry official on February 24 had said the total sugar output would be around 27 million tonnes this year. Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) had in November last year pegged sugar production at 26 million tonnes for the 2019-20 marketing year (October to September) considering fall in sugarcane crop in key growing states, compared with 33.16 million tonnes during the 2018-19 marketing year. Already, about 17 million tonnes of sugar has been manufactured by mills till February 15. Annual sugar consumption in India, the world's second largest producer after Brazil, is about 26 million tonnes. Releasing the latest data, ISMA said: "Sugar production during 2019-20 would be slightly more than what was estimated in November 2019. ISMA has accordingly revised its sugar production estimates upwards from 26 million tonnes to 26.5 million tonnes for 2019-20. The production estimate has been revised after considering reduction of sugar following higher production of ethanol by way of diversion of B-heavy molasses and sugarcane juice, it said in a statement. According to the second estimate, production in Uttar Pradesh, the country's largest sugar-producing state, is estimated to be 11.8 million tonnes this year, almost similar to what the state had produced in 2018-19. However, in Maharashtra, sugar production is estimated to drop by almost 40 per cent to around 6.2 million tonnes in 2019-20 as against 10.72 million tonnes in 2018-19. "Based on our analysis, we expect higher yield from the balance sugarcane available for harvesting which is mainly in areas which are high yielding districts like Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli and Pune," ISMA said. Similarly, in Karnataka, sugar production is estimated to be around 3.3 million tonnes in 2019-20 from 4.43 million tonnes in 2018-19 due to fall in cane acreage by 21 per cent. According to ISMA, there has not been any major changes in the other sugarcane growing states of the country. As per the second advance estimates, other states including Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Odisha and Uttarakhand are collectively expected to produce about 5.2 million tonne this year. On ethanol supply for blending with petrol, the industry body said 61.63 crore litres of ethanol made from B-heavy molasses and 10.60 crore litres ethanol made from sugarcane juice have been finalised from the first tender. Another tender is under finalisation and is expected that some more ethanol supplies would be contracted, including ethanol from B-heavy molasses and sugarcane juice. ISMA said closing stock of sugar at the end of the current year is expected to be around 10 million tonnes. If the government continues with its buffer stocks of 4 million tonnes next year too, the net available sugar balance for market sale will be around 6 million tonnes, which is considered reasonable, it added. ISMA revises India's sugar output upward by 2 pc to 26.5 million tonnes for 2019-20

New Delhi, Feb 3 () India's sugar production declined 24 per cent to 141.12 lakh tonne during October-January period of the current marketing year because of fall in output in major producing state Maharashtra, according to industry body ISMA.
 Sugar production stood at 185.59 lakh tonne in the year-ago period.
 The sugar marketing year runs from October to September.
 "As on January 31, 2020, 446 sugar mills in the country have produced 141.12 lakh tonne of sugar, as compared to 185.59 lakh tonne produced by 520 mills last season on the corresponding date," Indian Sugar Mills Association said in a statement.
 In Maharashtra, sugar production in the first four months of the 2019-20 marketing year is estimated at 34.64 lakh tonne compared with 70.99 lakh tonne in the corresponding period of the previous year.
 Sugar output in Uttar Pradesh, however, increased to 54.96 lakh tonne from 52.86 lakh tonne. In Karnataka, production fell to 27.94 lakh tonne from 33.76 lakh tonne.
 ISMA has pegged the country's sugar production at 260 lakh tonne for 2019-20.
 The estimates are based after accounting for the diversion of sugarcane juice and 'B' heavy molasses into ethanol, which will reduce about 8.5 lakh tonne of sugar production.
 "260 lakh tonne of sugar will be around 70 lakh tonne less than the production of the last season. We can already see that current year's production is trailing by almost 44.5 lac tonne till the end of January 2020 as compared to the previous season," the statement said.
 The sugar sales in the first four months of the current season would be almost 7-8 lakh tonne more than the year-ago period.
 "In the last year, the estimated sugar sales by the sugar mills were around 255 lakh tonne and considering the higher sales in this year, ISMA expects the sugar sales by sugar mills in the current season to be around 260 lakh tonne," it added. MJH SHW

Sugar production down 24% at 141 lakh tonne during Oct-Jan of 2019-20 mkt yr

New Delhi, Jan 17 () The country's sugar production has declined sharply by 26.15 per cent to 10.88 million tonne till January 15 of the current marketing year due to fall in output in Maharashtra and Karnataka, industry body ISMA said on Friday.
 Sugar output was 14.74 million during October-January 15 of the 2018-19 marketing year (October-September).
 In its first estimate, Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) had pegged sugar production lower at 26 million tonne for this year against 33.16 million tonne in 2018-19. The second estimate will be released next month.
 Sugar production in Maharashtra -- the country's largest sugar producing state -- fell by 55.44 per cent to 2.55 million tonne till January 15, as against 5.72 million tonne in the same period last year.
 About 139 sugar mills were in operation till January 15 as against 189 mills in the same period last year.
 Whereas production in Uttar Pradesh, the country's second largest producing state, rose to 4.37 million tonne so far when compared to 4.19 million tonne a year ago.
 About 119 mills were operating and average sugar recovery was 10.83 per cent so far.
 The production in Karnataka, the country's third largest sugar producing state, declined by 18.16 per cent to 2.19 million tonne as against 2.67 million tonne in the said period.
 Sugar production in Gujarat touched 3,72,000 tonne, Bihar at 3,30,000 tonne, Punjab 2,05,000 tonne, Haryana 2,00,000 tonne, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana at 1,85,000 tonne, Uttarakhand 1,52,000 tonne, Tamil Nadu 1,50,000 tonne, and Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh 1,63,000 tonne till January 15 of this year, the data showed.
 On ethanol, ISMA said about 156 crore litres has been finalised for supply to oil marketing companies (OMCs) after the first tender.
 Of which, ethanol made from B heavy molasses and sugarcane juice is about 61.63 crore litres and 10.60 crore litres, respectively. It is learnt that the second round of tender is expected to be floated by OMC's shortly, it added. LUX MR

This is well over domestic demand, and hence as India exports the surplus stocks, global prices will decline. </li><li>India has tried to curb the problem of overproduction by incentivising the production of ethanol, but the initiative is still in the early stages. </li></ul>As the US clashes with India over the latter’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/america-doesnt-like-indias-farmer-subsidies-and-thats-unlikely-to-change-anytime-soon/articleshow/64123715.cms">agricultural subsidies</a>, India is all set to be hit with a fresh challenge over its subsidies to local sugar producers — this time from Australia. At the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) Committee on Agriculture meeting later this month, Australia is all set to raise the issue of India’s sugar production subsidies, according <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2018-11-16/india-sugar-subsidies-priority-for-industry/10176976">to ABC News</a>, complaining that these distort the global market for sugar by lowering prices and increasing supply significantly. To this effect, it has issued a counter-notification against India -- the first step required to compel a WTO member to cut subsidies, wherein the complainant explains the nature of the subsidy and subsequent market distortion. India’s astonishing rate of sugar production is well-documented. Given that they are assured of a government-set fixed price from sugar mills that helps them exceed their costs, India’s sugarcane farmers are expected to produce <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-could-soon-become-the-worlds-largest-sugar-producer-but-heres-why-thats-a-problem/articleshow/65657844.cms">35.5 million tonnes </a>of sugar between October 2018 and September 2019, according to the <keyword id="124503" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Sugar-Mills-Association">Indian Sugar Mills Association</keyword>. As a result, India will overtake <keyword id="6355226" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="brazil">Brazil</keyword> as the world’s largest sugar producer. However, this isn’t something to be celebrated. India needs to do a better job at converting excess stocks of sugarcane to ethanol. Otherwise, it risks flooding the global market with excess sugar, since annual domestic demand is only about 25 million tonnes, depressing prices even further. That is largely where Australia’s complaints emanate from. The low global prices of sugar have hurt its sugarcane farmers falling well below their costs of production. In addition, more sugarcane importers are expected to choose India’s sugarcane over other countries like Australia and Brazil because of the cheaper prices. Meanwhile, India’s sugarcane mills are also struggling with low sugar prices, which has resulted in a huge build-up of <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/agriculture/sugarcane-arrears-to-farmers-down-to-rs-16600-crore-government/articleshow/65214878.cms">arrears to </a>sugarcane farmers. Contrasted sharply against the gray concrete and the similarly gray cars typically parked here, the orange Jeep was garish, lurid, and rude. A punchline straight to the eyes.But it wasn't just the color. There was presence. The Gladiator stands tall; it has beefy, all-terrain tires. Swaths of blocky, black trim. Squared-off fenders that stick out inches from the body. A design composed of straight lines and right angles.<div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon107" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323132" hostid="261"></div>The good news is that the Jeep Gladiator's look will likely age well; straight lines and 90-degree angles don't exactly go out of fashion.<h2>The 2020 Jeep Gladiator: Jeep went wild on the optional features </h2>The Gladiator is Jeep's take on the highly lucrative midsize pickup truck market. Designed to compete against the likes of the Honda Ridgeline, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Tacoma, the Gladiator offers four-wheel drive, a five-foot bed, off-roading prowess, and Jeepish looks. In fact, if you were to eye it straight in the familiar seven-slot grille-face, you wouldn't be able to tell there's a pickup bed attached back there at all. From the side, too, its front half is a Jeep Wrangler. Its back half is a rectangle. <div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon96" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76323134" hostid="261"></div>Jeep offers <a href="https://www.jeep.com/bmo.gladiator.2020.html#/models/2020/gladiator?app=bmo&amp;vehicle=gladiator&amp;year=2020ear=2020">seven trims</a> for the 2020 Gladiator. The cheapest is the Sport, which starts at $33,545. The most expensive is the High Altitude, which starts at $51,745. For the purpose of my review, Jeep loaned me the Gladiator Rubicon — tied for the second most expensive in the lineup.<div type="image" title="Jeep Gladiator trims" height="769" width="1400" msid="76323138" hostid="261"></div>Rubicon Gladiators come with trimmings like an available forward-facing off-road camera, LED headlights and fog lights, protective cab and cargo-bed rock rails, two-piece body-color fender flares with black insert, 33-inch tires as standard, and a fancy Rock-Trac 4x4 system, good for scaling over obstacles while traversing off road. My loaner was also outfitted with seemingly all of these options: leather-trimmed bucket seats ($1,495), a premium audio system ($1,695), a roll-up <a href="https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/r/advice/car-truck-mods/tonneau-cover">tonneau cover</a> ($595), adaptive cruise control ($795), an eight-speed automatic 850RE transmission ($2,000), a body-color three-piece hardtop ($2,295), a winch-capable steel front bumper ($795), 17-inch polished black aluminum wheels ($995), and the forward-facing trail camera ($595).<div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon88" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323140" hostid="261"></div>In all, the total price of the vehicle came to a whopping $62,020. Show me the person who would realistically option their Gladiator in such a fashion, because I cannot imagine them. $62,000 is a lot of money for a midsize pickup! The options Jeep gave its press car were appreciated, but they didn't really add or detract from the truck's primary job, which is being a truck.<h2>Details and safety ratings: Built for off-roading, but not for fuel economy</h2>Powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, the Gladiator makes a claimed 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual comes standard, but an eight-speed automatic is optional.<div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon99" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323144" hostid="261"></div>The engine is designed to produce low-range torque — meaning that it's best-suited for low speeds and doing low-speed things, such as off-roading, driving during harsh conditions, hauling cargo, or towing something. The Gladiator is based on the same platform as the current Wrangler and utilizes a body-on-frame design: the vehicle's frame and body are two different pieces. True, it means the Gladiator is perhaps heavier and less fuel-efficient than something with a unibody construction — where frame and body are combined into one piece. But it also means that the Gladiator was designed from the ground up as something intended for off-roading and transporting heavy loads. Body-on-frame vehicles are generally cheaper to build, too.<div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon93" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323148" hostid="261"></div>Rubicon-trim Gladiators also wear a Jeep Trail Rated badge, which means that they have added ground clearance, big tires, 30 inches of water fording ability, and up to 7,650 pounds of towing capacity. Although the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not yet given the 2020 Gladiator an overall safety rating, it did <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2020/JEEP/GLADIATOR/PU%25252FCC/4WD#safety-ratings-frontal" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">award the truck</a> four out of five stars for overall frontal crashworthiness. The front driver side earned four stars, while the front passenger side earned five stars. Side crash hasn't been rated, but rollover scored a mere three stars. The agency reported a 26.7% risk of rollover.<h2>What stands out: The thing is a god in its off-roading element</h2>Despite its fearsome and rugged looks, the Gladiator is actually a comfortable place to spend a few hours during long commutes. There's abundant room in the cabin for four passengers, and even the rear seats are roomy. Plenty of headroom and legroom. <div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon97" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76323152" hostid="261"></div>The bed, for us, hauled two suitcases, two backpacks, bags of groceries, electronics, a purse, a laundry hamper, and two large director's chairs. Jeep provided a tonneau cover and that came in very handy, as it kept all of our stuff dry. Some light off-roading later, it was clear to me the big Jeep was in its element. Trundling up and down grassy knolls and through the woods, the Gladiator happily bumped, tilted, and thumped across the uneven terrain, always solidly planted. The off-roading suspension drank in the turbulence — not so much soaking it up completely so that you, the driver, would be numb to it — but rather in a way that was pliable and inspired confidence. <div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon115" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323155" hostid="261"></div>Driving the truck across this sort of environment was akin to sitting astride a very sure-footed, four-legged animal. Sure, I wouldn't recommend doing it with an open mug of coffee in your hand, but all four wheels consistently felt they were working together, cohesively, under me. That feeling was a direct result of the truck's four-wheel drive and locking differentials — which allows both wheels on an axle to travel at the same speed so when one wheel loses traction, both keep spinning and hopefully will pull you out of the low-traction situation.The 11.1 inches of ground clearance also meant that the Gladiator could crawl over a great number of things in its way. The trunk of a fallen birch tree, for example, would have torn off the front bumper of (and caused significant damage to) your average crossover or SUV, but the truck stepped right over the obstacle and thought nothing of it. <div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon109" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76323160" hostid="261"></div><h2>What falls short: Not a happy highway camper </h2>The saying, "jack of all trades, master of none" unfortunately rings extremely true here. As stoked as the Gladiator clearly is while splashing about in muck or sand, it doesn't do the highway cruising with nearly as much gumption. Don't get me wrong; the Gladiator is a very fine around-town commuter, great for running errands. You sit high and can easily see around and over other cars — a very big deal for a short person such as myself. But once you hit the highway, that confidence and sure-footedness from the low-speed off-roading all but evaporates. The bouncy suspension, so well optimized for uncivilized terrain, feeds some unwelcome wobbliness into the cabin. The big, all-terrain tires hum loudly at high speed. <div type="image" title="Jeep Gladiator4" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323163" hostid="261"></div>The Jeep also didn't like maintaining highway speeds. Other cars merely require periodic throttle inputs to keep up consistent speeds of about 65 mph or so; pretty effortless and thoughtless stuff. The Gladiator felt as though it was constantly driving through molasses that kept dragging its speed down. Eventually, I gave up trying to hold to a constant speed by myself and instead switched on the cruise control. And thanks to the approximate aerodynamics of a brick, I observed the Gladiator to return an average of 19.2 mpg during the course of my loan, which included city driving, highway driving, and around-town errand running. On the truck's window sticker, the EPA gives the Gladiator a fuel economy and greenhouse-gas rating of three out of 10. Hardware wise, I do wish the wing mirrors stuck out a bit further. The Gladiator is a long vehicle and it isn't always easy to see where it ends. It has thick C-pillars, which result in blind spots during over-the-shoulder glances. Wing mirrors with a wider field of view would have been helpful there. <div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon142" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323167" hostid="261"></div><h2>How the Gladiator compares to its competitors: A bit more expensive, and a bit more uncouth </h2>Compared to other midsize <keyword id="47193" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="trucks">trucks</keyword> available to US buyers, the Gladiator's base price is high. If your sole buying criteria is for a midsize truck, then the Ford Ranger would be a fine thing to bring home. The Ranger starts at $24,410, and its 4WD version gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The Gladiator with the automatic transmission gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.Certainly, other trucks are likely more comfortable and civilized than the rather uncouth Gladiator. That's the new truck trend these days: SUV-like quality and comfort, but with a bed for all your stuff. But if you want a truck where you can pull its doors off, a truck that revels in getting muddy from playtime and going where there are no roads, the Gladiator is for you. It'll do the suburban life just fine, but you can tell its heart is elsewhere.<div type="image" title="Jeep Gladiator2" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323171" hostid="261"></div><h2>Our impressions: Maybe if I didn't live in Brooklyn</h2>Perhaps this is a uniquely Me Problem, but I actually felt too short for the Gladiator. At five-foot-three, I was disappointed by the truck's lack of running boards (don't worry, you can get them as an option). It took several days for me to get used to the massive step up I had to take to climb into the cabin. Twice, while exiting backward, I misjudged the distance from the truck to the ground and nearly fell out of it.Thankfully, the Jeep has handles at the A- and B-pillars that passengers can use to pull themselves up, but this crutch falls apart when you approach the truck with items in both hands, such as a phone, car keys, and a beverage. Even if you manage to open the door with one finger, you'll still need to first reach into the truck to put everything down before grabbing the handle to hoist yourself in. It's an extra step. The lofty ground clearance — so great for fallen trees and the like! — also means that the bed is quite high up. Maybe you're tall enough that you can just reach in from the side to retrieve your items. To that end, I am ecstatic for you. I had to physically climb into the bed and push everything toward the tailgate before I could remove it. <div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon129" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323174" hostid="261"></div>Despite these small inconveniences, though, I liked the Gladiator. I appreciate its existence. I respect its off-road capabilities and how stable it always felt. If I lived in the desert, preferably somewhere in the American Southwest, I'd definitely consider one. But as it currently stands, I live in Brooklyn, and in Brooklyn, the Jeep pickup truck simply feels too big to be allowed. That being said, I have a hard time figuring out who the Gladiator is actually for. You'd think, given the popularity of midsize trucks, they would sell more quickly than Jeep could make them. It certainly seems like the automaker was betting on this very thing to happen. But it didn't.The Gladiator went on sale during the second half of 2019. Yet, the Compass, Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and even the Renegade <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/fca-us-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2019-sales-300980866.html">sold better than it did in Q4</a>. I remember automotive readers being very excited about the Gladiator. But it doesn't seem like many people bought them.<div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon86" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76323177" hostid="261"></div>Perhaps it's because the Gladiator markets itself a little bit too much to the niche truck buyer. The higher price tag certainly suggests that. This truck appeals to the buyer who probably wouldn't use their Gladiator as a work tool, but rather as a recreational vehicle. A playtime buggy. A toy. Look no further than <a href="https://media.fcanorthamerica.com/image-gallery.do?method=view&amp;imageGalleryId=1027&amp;mid=1015mid=1015">Jeep's own press images of the truck</a>, which feature it prominently at play (or doing play-adjacent activities): fording creeks, going to the beach, rock crawling, hauling a boat, and transporting kayaks and dirt bikes. This is the truck you load up with camping equipment to get to that far-out campsite that's inaccessible to everything except lifted Jeeps and donkeys. It's not a bad territory to occupy, even if a little niche. <div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon102" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323179" hostid="261"></div>
