The company plans to use this capital to expand its commercial presence in the United States and the European Union. Besides this, it will also look to strengthen its operations in the Indian subcontinent. “Axio’s vision is to deliver disruptive products in the surgical and wound care space globally through our patented biomaterial technology. This Series B2 funding will help us to grow in developed markets and expand our roster of regulatorily approved products,” the company’s founder Leo Mavely said in a press note. The company’s existing investors Omidyar Network India, University of California-Ratan Tata Fund and Accel also participated in the round. Overall, the company has raised $20 million to date. Founded in 2007, Axio Solution develops proprietary products using biomaterial-bases technology for the hemostatic (capable of stopping the blood flow) and advanced wound care market. It has marked its presence in over 40 countries across the globe, including India and Europe. The company claims that its first-aid dressing, which is made of a natural biopolymer Chitosan, can stop bleeding within two-three minutes of application. MaxioCel, a wound care product made by Axio, can heal chronic wounds like pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, cavity wounds, post-operative surgical wounds and more. “Axio’s products are a testament to the kind of technology and manufacturing expertise being built out of India for the world. We have been impressed by Axio’s R&amp;D [research and development] capability along with their capital efficiency in building out an intellectual property-led medtech company,” TrueScale Capital’s managing partner Sameer Nath said. Nath will also be joining the company’s Board of Directors with this round. Scientists accidentally discovered <a href="http://science.sciencemag.org/content/315/5818/1544">the lake in 2007</a>, when they were examining satellite imagery of Antarctica's ice sheet. Then on December 26, 2018, they finally reached it.To explore the 50-foot-deep subglacial lake, researchers from a project called <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiUybigyPffAhUMk1kKHf82AugQFjAAegQIChAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fsalsa-antarctica.org%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw1dOxnlKuDBPcdBLeZTfJvK">SALSA (Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access)</a> had to bore a tiny hole nearly 1 kilometer into the ice. They did this using a drill with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scientists-in-antarctica-drilled-thousands-of-feet-into-lost-lake-2019-1">pencil-sized nozzle</a> that sprays heated water. Once the hole was made, they then used a corer tool to pull samples back to the surface. The team anticipated finding microbial lifeforms in those samples - and they did - but they were surprised by what else was lurking in the mud. The samples also contained carcasses of tiny crustaceans (creatures smaller than a poppy seed) and the body of a tardigrade, a type of eight-legged invertebrate known for its ability to withstand the very harshest conditions.<h2>A surprise in the mud</h2>The SALSA team wound up extracting a 5.5-foot-long core (the longest ever from a subglacial lake) along with <a href="https://salsa-antarctica.org/2019/01/07/salsa-celebrates-successful-mission-at-mercer-subglacial-lake/">"six out of six 'perfect' sediment cores."</a> They also filled six 10-liter bottles with lake water and captured the first-ever footage of the lake. The fruits of their labor were transported back to McMurdo Ice Station for analysis, according to the <a href="https://salsa-antarctica.org/2019/01/07/salsa-celebrates-successful-mission-at-mercer-subglacial-lake/">SALSA project's blog</a>.When the researchers discovered the bodies of tiny crustaceans and a tardigrade in the samples, Priscu was so surprised that he thought the finding was a mistake. He was convinced that the cores had been contaminated, <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-00106-z">Nature reported</a>. Nothing like this had ever been found under an ice sheet before. Lake Mercer is the second <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-subglacial-lake-has-been-found-beneath-antarcticas-ice-2016-4">subglacial lake</a> that scientists have accessed - they also drilled 2,600 feet down to reach the nearby <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/burried-antarctic-lake-shows-first-signs-of-life-2013-1">Lake Whillans in 2013</a>, but the samples taken there showed no signs of higher lifeforms (just microbes).Microbial life most likely exists in this mud under the ice because an ocean covered the area about one million years ago, SALSA's chief scientist, John Priscu, <a href="https://www.axios.com/scientists-find-life-in-lake-buried-deep-underneath-antarctic-ice-e1b63387-43de-45d0-aeb5-a38eef375cae.html">told Axios</a>. But that doesn't explain the origin of the carcasses. Instead, the discovery suggests that these crustaceans and tardigrades once lived on the continent; somehow, they were transported to the lake from nearby mountains (<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-00106-z">where such creatures have been found before</a>). Moving water could have carried them, or a glacier may have dragged them as it advanced, <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-00106-z">according to Nature</a>. <h2>How to reach a lake under the ice</h2>Subglacial Antarctica is an interstate of waterworks.Streams and rivers connect hundreds of bodies of water underneath the ice, and this network has changed over the course of Antarctica's history. Understanding how the continent's ice responds to changes in Earth's climate helps scientists understand more about its history."Antarctica is the place on Earth least touched by humans, and as such it's an amazing laboratory to understanding life and biodiversity, and our planet's glacial history," Ross Virginia, director of Dartmouth College's Institute of Arctic Studies, told Business Insider.Plus, studying Antarctic waterways is a crucial way to keep tabs on the potential consequences of global warming. "The evolution of ice sheets and ice shelves are major controllers of sea-level rise," Virginia said.But researching Antarctica's subglacial systems is incredibly difficult.Virginia has been working on and off in Antarctica's Dry Valleys for close to 30 years, and has worked with Priscu on other Antarctic research projects. Drilling in these environments, he said, requires the same kind of care that NASA takes when exploring new worlds in space - "like quarantining astronauts coming back from the moon or maintaining sterile equipment." This is because contamination can easily ruin costly and important research, or even lead scientists to think they've discovered a type of life that's not actually there. "We're always concerned with contamination," Victoria said. Even though the hole they drilled was no more than 60 centimeters wide, the researchers were able to slide that corer down the nearly 1-kilometer-long chute. After it hit the sediment below, the corer - and the lake mud it grabbed - were pulled back to the surface.<h2>Paving the way for drilling in other extreme environments</h2>Because the drilling operation was so difficult and complex, the SALSA project could offer lessons for pursuing research in other extreme environments, perhaps even those on other other planets.Drilling in Antarctica is about as close as scientists can get to understanding what it would take to drill into the liquid ocean on Jupiter's moon Europa, Mark Skidmore, a professor of Earth sciences at Montana State University <a href="https://www.axios.com/scientists-find-life-in-lake-buried-deep-underneath-antarctic-ice-e1b63387-43de-45d0-aeb5-a38eef375cae.html">told Axios</a>.Experts think Europa's oceans are one of the most likely places to find extraterrestrial life in our solar system."We're learning about the types of technologies and processes and how you'd go about doing it, and learning about what you'd find in those types of environments," Skidmore told Axios.But drilling under Antarctica benefits us on Earth, too Virginia's biggest concern is that the large floating ice sheets that extend from Antarctica's continental margins are melting from underneath thanks to warming water. The US has preordered millions of doses of the Oxford vaccine. <h2>VIEWS OF THE DAY</h2>Democrats must abolish the <keyword id="1585198" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="filibuster">filibuster</keyword> if they win the Senate<div type="image" title="chuck schumer" height="952" width="1905" msid="77074114" hostid="261"></div>Realistic about President Trump's declining poll numbers and the impossibility of re-taking the House, Republicans are increasingly focusing their electoral hopes on preserving<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/20/us/politics/republican-senators-2020-trump.html?action=click&amp;module=Top%20Stories&amp;pgtype=HomepageHomepage"> their Senate majority</a>. But even if Democrats take back the Senate, a slim majority would help President Biden very little if the filibuster persists. That's why the most consequential decision of this election could be in January not November, when the new Senate decides whether to preserve the filibuster or revert to majority rule. The filibuster, which is a Senate tradition but not a requirement, gives the minority a veto over most legislation. Under the Senate's arcane rules, President Biden would be able to push through one budget bill every year with a simple majority, and get his judicial nominees approved, but 40-plus Republican senators could filibuster and kill <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/07/why-senate-filibuster-could-be-gone-2021/614278/">any significant legislation on voting rights or police reform</a>, for example. We've seen this movie before. The Republican Senate used the filibuster (and later the majority) to block all significant non-budgetary legislation for the last six years of the Obama presidency. President Obama responded with significant executive actions that circumvented Congress, like DACA. President Trump has put circumvention on steroids, invoking his executive authority to remake immigration law, raid the Pentagon budget to build a wall, start trade wars, and stonewall congressional inquiries. Trump has dared the courts to stop him, which they haven't. Now he seems to be contemplating an even vaster presidential power grab, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-mulls-legal-loophole-bypass-immigration-law-national-review-john-yoo-2020-7">simply not enforcing laws he doesn't like.</a> If Democrats win the White House and Senate, President Biden and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer would need to choose one of three paths. <ul><li>First, they could maintain the filibuster, giving Republicans the ability to block all significant legislation, while also retreating from the executive overreach that has defined the Trump years. This would result in a weak presidency and none of the progressive change Democrats long for. </li><li>Second, they could maintain the filibuster, giving Republicans the ability to block all meaningful legislation, but continue the Trumpian executive overreach, allowing Biden to pursue progressive goals through regulation and executive orders. The problem is this would further concentrate executive power — which most Democrats fear —and it might not even work, since a conservative Supreme Court would probably stop it. </li><li>Third, they could abolish the filibuster, and use House and Senate majorities to pass as much progressive legislation as they can agree on. This would toss out a senatorial tradition but would strengthen Congress as a whole, and make it a more equal partner to the presidency. It would also mean that the next Republican president with a Republican Congress would be similarly untrammelled. </li></ul>If you're Biden or Schumer, it's obvious which of these three choices will accomplish the most and undermine our political system least. Last week the president bragged on Fox News that he "aced" a mental acuity test that he believed Biden would fail.<a href="https://twitter.com/rgoodlaw/status/1284860680773017600">Wallace told Trump</a> that he found the same test online and said "it's not the hardest test," noting that it requires you to identify a picture of an elephant and to count backwards from 100 by seven. These shouldn't be considered remarkable feats of journalism but in 2020, they are. A serious interviewer that isn't in the tank for one candidate or political party <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/27/politics/joe-biden-fact-check-gop-tax-cuts-naacp-endorsement/index.html">should always challenge and fact-check their subject</a>. And just because Trump lies at levels that go light-years beyond just your average spin, cable news interviewers <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/11/us/politics/fact-checking-biden-on-the-coronavirus-and-his-own-record.html">shouldn't let Democratic candidates off the hook</a> when they stretch the truth about their records or their opponents, either.
