The car replaces multiple basic controls in the pursuit to be more connected to the driver, like switching out the steering wheel and pedals for an interactive joystick-like controller on the center console. Here's what it's like inside the symbiotic concept.Inside the AVTR, the car comes to life when the driver puts their hand on the central control pad. The device is used by drivers to accelerate, brake, and turn the car. The pad itself vibrates and pulsates like a heartbeat in order to mimic a living, breathing animal. Instead of a dashboard or infotainment screen, the front of the cabin features one giant curved display module that projects real-time footage of the road ahead. You can even choose for it to light up with 3D graphics of Pandora, the fictional world from the 2009 film "Avatar." In order to access the car's different features, take your hand off the center pad, and a menu of controls is projected onto your palm that you can cycle through with gestures.The car's body uses Mercedes' same one-bow design, like many of the automaker's other <keyword id="87931" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Concept-cars">concept cars</keyword>, but features a massive windshield and entirely transparent doors. This is a car you're gonna want to dress your best for. Its most distinct feature is the 33 bionic flaps on the rear of the car. These flaps move and light up in different colors to indicate when the vehicle is accelerating, braking, or turning.Despite being a show car, the AVTR is no slouch on the road. The all-electric concept features four motors, one at each wheel, that together make a combined 469 horsepower. Its battery also manages a total driving range of up to 435 miles. The car's spherical wheels combined with two independently moving axles allow it to crab-walk sideways at a 30-degree angle, both a neat party trick and potentially useful for certain driving situations that require squeezing through some very tight spaces.The AVTR's battery cell takes eco-friendly to another level. Unlike modern EV batteries made from toxic metals like lithium and cobalt, this concept's battery is graphene-based, making it recyclable through composting. The battery also has a high-energy density, making it capable of being fully charged in 15 minutes. It's good for the environment and convenient for drivers, but still requires a lot of research before this technology is applied to modern <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword>. And while we don't expect anything close to this car in the near, or even distant future, some influencers got a chance to test-drive the concept earlier this year for the first time.

Futuristic Mercedes doesn't have a steering wheel

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="25952" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mercedes-Benz">Mercedes-Benz</keyword> released driving footage of its futuristic "Vision <keyword id="9343994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="avtr">AVTR</keyword>" concept car on Saturday. </li><li>Mercedes got its inspiration for the car from the film "Avatar" and aimed to develop a "completely new interaction between human, machine and nature." </li><li>The car has no steering wheel and can "crab walk" diagonally.</li></ul>Back in January, before the pandemic canceled auto shows and forced new-car reveals to go virtual, Mercedes-Benz <a href="https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko/Consumer-Electronics-Show-CES-2020-In-collaboration-with-the-AVATAR-films-Mercedes-Benz-is-developing-a-vision-for-the-future-of-mobility-the-VISION-AVTR.xhtml?oid=45322778">showed</a> off a bizarre, futuristic concept at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Now, there's some footage of the car actually driving. The concept is called the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mercedes-benz-vision-avtr-concept-car-no-steering-wheel-avatar-2020-1">Vision AVTR</a>, and Mercedes debuted the otherworldly car in partnership with the "Avatar" films. The idea behind the vehicle, <a href="https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko.xhtml?rs=0&amp;ls=L2VuL2luc3RhbmNlL2tvLnhodG1sP29pZD00NTI5MjY4NCZyZWxJZD02MDgyMiZmcm9tT2lkPTQ1MjkyNjg0JmJvcmRlcnM9dHJ1ZSZyZXN1bHRJbmZvVHlwZUlkPTQwNjI3JmZyb21JbmZvVHlwZUlkPTQwNjMw&amp;oid=4531375245313752">Mercedes said</a>, was to create a "completely new interaction between human, machine and nature." Instead of a steering wheel, the concept sports a "multifunctional control element" on the center tunnel that drivers operate with one hand. "By placing the hand on the control unit, the interior comes to life and the vehicle recognizes the driver by [their] heartbeat and breathing," Mercedes said. Mercedes aimed to give the Vision AVTR a more organic design than vehicles on the road today, and included 33 "bionic flaps" on the car's rear that look like reptile scales. Although a vehicle allowing "human and machine to merge," as Mercedes describes it, is probably a long way away, the Vision AVTR has some interesting powertrain elements that could possibly make their way into production vehicles. While labeled as a concept vehicle, the Ariya's styling wouldn't look out of place on the road today, and Nissan plans to release a production version next year. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/ford">Ford</a>, which at CES in 2018 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-makes-push-catch-up-autonomous-vehicles-2018-1">outlined a vision</a> for connecting vehicles, pedestrians, and infrastructure while shying away from specific timelines, focused this year on its Mustang Mach-E electric SUV. The Mach-E will hit dealerships at the end of the year.Even at an event dedicated to the Vision AVTR, there was a connection to immediate, real-world concerns. It will also require a thoughtful approach to how those technologies interact with the world around them.Uber has clashed with some cities it entered without warning, leaving the ride-hailing service banned in <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/uber-lost-london-license-may-get-worse-warning-to-investors-neil-wilson-1028715607">London</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/german-court-bans-uber-services-via-rental-cars-in-germany-2019-12">Germany</a>, while complaints about the hazards of electric scooters that were quickly dropped in cities by startups like Bird and Lime have led some local governments to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/san-francisco-ban-shared-dockless-scooters-2018-5">cap</a> the number allowed in their jurisdictions.Both cases have shown that the "move fast and break things" ethos embraced by Silicon Valley startups can invite unintended consequences that pose moral and logistical challenges."The investment in going into a city is tremendous," said John Rich, the COO of Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC. "We can't have an adversarial relationship. We have to be solving their problems. We have to be invited in."No automaker at CES split the difference between idealism and realism more than <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/toyota">Toyota</a>, which put at the center of its display a smart-city prototype it will build in Japan. Called the Woven City, the prototype will serve as a testing ground for a number of technologies, including self-driving cars, robots, and smart homes, creating an opportunity to see how they work together. While renderings of the Woven City have a science-fiction sheen to them, the project will focus as much on urban design and renewable energy as it does on high-tech gadgets."Peope have to be at the center of anything that Toyota does," said James Kuffner, the chief technology officer of the Toyota Research Institute. Daniel Kirchert, CEO of the electric-vehicle startup <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/byton">Byton</a>, whose debut vehicle, the M-Byte SUV, will have the auto industry's largest <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/byton-exec-explains-why-48-inch-screen-wont-distract-drivers-2019-2">dashboard screen</a>, said the company does not want to reinvent every part of the automotive business. Instead, it will focus on innovating in areas where it believes it has an edge."We should not believe that we can do too many things," Kirchert said. "We need to stay very focused."In an apparent reference to Tesla, which struggled mightily when it tried to automate much of its vehicle-assembly process in 2017, Kirchert said Byton would not follow a similar path, instead attempting to implement the auto industry's best practices for manufacturing.Ultimately, a shift away from speculation and toward implementation could bode well for the auto industry's seemingly inevitable transition to electric and self-driving vehicles. CES isn't where you should expect to find the newest gadgets you'll be able to get your hands on in the coming year. Rather, it provides a broad view of where the world's biggest companies in the technology, home appliances, and automotive sectors, among other industries, are investing their resources. It provides a peek at the world we might live in anywhere from between five and 25 years from now.This year's show was full of dazzling TVs, futuristic car prototypes, home robots, and a whole lot more. It alleges Google has copied includes the tech that lets smart speakers pair and sync.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-exec-andrew-bosworth-employees-should-not-try-to-stop-trump-2020-1?r=US&amp;IR=T">Facebook exec Andrew Bosworth warned fellow employees against using their power to stop Trump's re-election</a>. In an internal memo leaked to The New York Times, Bosworth said he "desperately" didn't want Trump to win in 2020 but that the company shouldn't try and stop him.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zume-pizza-robots-layoffs-leadership-turmoil-alex-garden-softbank-2020-1?r=US&amp;IR=T">SoftBank-backed robotic pizza startup Zume plans to lay off up to 400 employees - 80% of its staff- and won't renew its Seattle lease</a>. The layoffs come as the startup has struggled to secure additional funding from SoftBank. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ring-ceo-security-practices-2fa-hacks-cyberattacks-passwords-police-2020-1">Ring's CEO says the company's security was 'at the top of the industry standards' as its devices were being hacked</a>. Jamie Siminoff said that customers' insecure passwords were to blame for the hacks.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fake-military-draft-text-message-warning-2020-1">Fake text messages about a military draft are being sent to Americans, the US Army has warned</a>. The messages claimed the sender was "contacting you through mail several times and have had no response," according to pictures obtained by Insider.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-user-terminal-flat-round-ufo-stick-elon-musk-2020-1">Elon Musk says a device resembling a 'UFO on a stick' will connect people to SpaceX's new Starlink satellite internet service</a>. The AVTR is an electric concept car which uses a glowing mould instead of a steering wheel. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-gaming-worker-organizers-get-boost-from-major-labor-union-2020-1">Tech and gaming workers seeking to organize have received a boost from one of the country's largest labor unions</a>. Communications Workers of America is launching a new initiative to support unionization efforts by increasingly vocal workers in the tech and gaming sectors.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marc-benioff-salesforce-attends-ivanka-trump-ces-2020-keynote-2020-1">Salesforce billionaire Marc Benioff was spotted front row at Ivanka Trump's controversial CES speech</a>. The outspoken CEO appeared to be front and center at Ivanka Trump's keynote talk - wearing his signature fedora, of course.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/logan-paul-youtube-antonio-brown-nfl-boxing-match-fight-talk-2020-1">YouTube star Logan Paul and NFL player Antonio Brown are trading insults online and hinting at a possible boxing match</a>.
