NO SUCCESS IN SHOOTING RANGE After the high of four medals in two days, there was disappointment in store for India in the shooting range with Lekhara failing to qualify for the final following a 11th-place finish in the mixed 10m air rifle prone (SH1) qualification in which Sidhartha Babu ended 28th. In the mixed 10m air rifle prone (SH2) qualification, Sriharsha Devaraddi Ramakrishna ended in 26th place with a total of 630.2. In the Paralympics mixed event, both men and women compete on the line against each other. Coming off her historic gold medal in the 10m air rifle standing SH1 event, Lekhara ended the competition with a total of 632.8. World No.23 Singh was the first athlete from India to win a gold medal at a major para competition in the 2018 Asian Games. An economics scholar from the Punjabi University, Patiala, Singh collected three shoot-off wins on the day starting with his triumphs in the opening rounds. In the bronze playoff, the 31-year-old was leading 5-3 before the Kroean clinched the fifth set shooting a perfect 10 to force a shoot-off where the Indian responded in style shooting a perfect 10 against Kim's 8 for a 6-5 (26-24, 27-29, 28-25, 25-25, 26-27) (10-8) win. Singh effected a spectacular turnaround from 0-4 down to bring the match on an even keel 5-5 (26-28, 23-26, 29-26, 23-21, 28-28) and force a shoot-off where he edged out his Russian opponent 8-7. In the quarters, Singh swept aside 49-year-old three-time Paralympian Maik Szarszewski of Germany 6-2 (25-21, 28-23, 25-28, 26-23) dropping just one set. Hailing from a middle-class farming family, Singh had dengue when he was just one-and-half years old and a local doctor administered him an injection that had an adverse effect and his legs stopped working properly. Meanwhile, para-archer Rakesh Kumar gave all the credit for the victory to his coaches. "I am feeling very good...The credit for my victory goes to my coaches...We will work hard and perform better at the next Paralympics," Rakesh told ANI. The Indian archery pair of Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi clinched the bronze medal in the Mixed Team Compound event with a win over Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonnacina of Italy at the ongoing Paris Paralympics. They defeated the Italian pair with a scoreline of 156-155 in the bronze medal match of the ongoing marquee event on Monday. With this win, they bagged a bronze medal for their country. The ongoing Paris Paralympics started on August 28 and will conclude on September 8. India's medal tally in the ongoing Paralympics has gone up to 27, with six gold medals, nine silver medals, and 12 bronze medals. This is the most gold India has ever won at a Paralympics Games event, outdoing the total of five golds in Tokyo 2020. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is seeking new powers that would allow Canberra to dictate terms to companies like Apple and Google over how they operate their mobile wallets and how they cooperate with local financial institutions, according to <a href="https://www.afr.com/companies/financial-services/treasurer-to-force-apple-into-line-20210829-p58mui">The Australian Financial Review (AFR)</a>. The move would help consolidate power over payments in Canberra, effectively wresting control from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). It would enable Treasury to create new rules and force tech companies to comply with them. “Ultimately, if we do nothing to reform the current framework, it will be Silicon Valley alone that determines the future of our payments system, a critical piece of our economic infrastructure,” Frydenberg told the AFR. It comes as policymakers increasingly scrutinise the outsized influence of tech platforms in Australia which are often subject to different regulations. The campaign is spearheaded by a parliamentary commission into ‘Mobile payment and digital wallet financial services’. Late last month, CBA boss Matt Comyn told the Committee that it was “cause for concern” that Apple controlled 80% of the digital wallet payments market, calling for greater local regulation of the $US2 trillion company. At the heart of the feud is the near-field communication (NFC) chip in Apple phones, the technology that enables iPhone users to ‘tap and go’. Without access to the chip, banks are forced to pay a fee to Apple every time a mobile payment is made via the iPhone’s mobile wallet. As mobile payments represent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/australia-debit-cards-apple-pay-afterpay-payments-retail-2019-11">a growing piece of the payments market</a>, it is an arrangement that has frustrated banking incumbents. Apple has <a href="https://www.smh.com.au/business/banking-and-finance/misleading-apple-hits-back-at-cba-s-matt-comyn-in-payments-stoush-20210827-p58mh5.html">fired back</a>, claiming in a Committee submission that Comyn’s comments deliberately mischaracterise Apple’s business in a bid to squeeze out competitors. “Central to some banks’ advocacy for open access to NFC is the pursuit of an anti-competitive model that’s detrimental to the customer experience, and an opposition to fair and reasonable fees,” it wrote. Similarly Google wields significant influence in the payments sector via its own eponymous wallet. Further reform will be guided by <a href="https://www.afr.com/companies/financial-services/treasury-scrutiny-on-payments-regulation-welcomed-by-disrupters-20201127-p56ifw">the Payments System Review</a>, which has made 15 recommendations currently being assessed by the Morrison government. Significantly, the Review did not pull any punches when it came to criticising the RBA and other regulators’ lack of intervention in the market, including its hands-off approach to the buy now, pay later (BNPL) space. The conclusions open the doors for a more proactive approach, with Canberra apparently thinking it is best placed to spearhead such an effort. It follows a range of recent battles to curtail the influence of Silicon Valley. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/facebook-news-media-bargaining-code-news-ban-2021-3">media bargaining code</a> was finalised earlier this year in an attempt to redistribute power within the local media landscape. Home Affairs meanwhile has warned Google and Amazon need to ensure they aren’t helping finance dangerous extremists.
