Mahindra Thar 2020 crosses 15,000 bookings — 57% are first time car buyers

(Eds: Adding more info) <p>New Delhi, Jun 19 () Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said the government is monitoring progress of various relief measures, especially the transmission of repo rate cuts to corporates and consumers to stimulate the economy, hit by COVID-19 crisis. </p><p>While interacting with the Managing Committee Members of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry through video conferencing, she said the government has always recognised the importance of wealth creators as they generate employment opportunities and utilise resources in optimal manner for promoting the socio-economic development in the country. </p><p>Sitharaman acknowledged that the Prime Minister has always facilitated a helping hand and recognised importance of MSMEs, an official statement from the ministry said. </p><p>"We are closely monitoring the situation in consultation with banks so that relief measures announced by the Government are effectively percolated at ground levels especially the transmission of repo rate cuts to consumers in terms of reduced interest rates," the release quoted her. </p><p>Last month, the RBI slashed the benchmark repurchase (repo) rate, the price at which banks borrow from the central bank, by 40 basis points to a historic low of 4 per cent. </p><p>RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had said monetary policy transmission to banks' lending rates has continued to improve. </p><p>"The 1 year median marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) declined by 90 bps (February 2019-May 15, 2020). The weighted average lending rate (WALR) on fresh rupee loans has cumulatively declined by 114 bps (basis points) since February 2019, of which 43 bps decline occurred in March 2020 alone," he had said. </p><p>The Finance Minister said that they are closely watching the developments in disbursement of loans under the provision of Rs 3 lakh crore collateral free automatic loans for businesses to mitigate the daunting impact of COVID-19 on trade and industry. </p><p>The government has always focused on minimum government and maximum governance with a special focus on addressing challenges faced by industry and promote ease of doing business, she said. </p><p>The government has always provided a helping hand without differentiation to all industry stakeholders especially to MSMEs. </p><p>PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry termed Rs 20.97 lakh crore stimulus package comprehensive and substantial. </p><p>The package is not only the monetary and financial stimulus, but also contains the game changing reforms to take India to the next high, it said. </p><p>The chamber suggested that one-time restructuring of the loans without affecting the classification for the severely impacted sectors such as tourism, aviation, entertainment, real estate, and automobile, among others is the need of the hour. </p><p>There may be a formal communication from the government to the banking sector to remove the fears from the minds of bankers so that the bank officials are able to sanction and disburse loans to the trade and industry without any fear, the chamber suggested. </p><p>It also said that there may not be any criminal proceedings if some business entity turns into NPA because of some genuine reason. </p>Besides the Finance Minister, Revenue Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey, Financial Services Secretary Debasish Panda, Corporate Affairs Secretary Rajesh Verma and Chief Economic Adviser Krishnamurthy Subramanian were present. Govt closely monitoring repo rate cut transmission by banks to customers: FM

New Delhi, Jan 14 () Auto-maker FCA India on Tuesday launched two variants of its sports utility vehicle Jeep Compass priced up to Rs 24.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
<p>The two variants -- Longitude and Limited Plus -- with all wheel drive (AWD 4x4) configuration powered by the locally manufactured BSVI-compliant 2 litre 173 HP turbo-diesel engine.
</p><p>The new trims also come with nine-speed automatic transmission.
</p><p>The Jeep Compass 4x4 Longitude 9AT is priced at Rs 21.96 lakh, while the Limited Plus trim is tagged at Rs 24.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
</p><p>"We are strengthening and expanding the Jeep Compass range with the introduction of four diesel automatic variants, of which, the base and top-end variant will available to consumers right away," FCA India President and Managing Director Partha Datta said in a statement.
</p><p>Both variants offer more equipment, boosting the value-for-money proposition for the customer, which the company believes will increase its share in the segment, he added.
</p><p>"This roll out has also given us the opportunity to offer our locally-made BSVI-compliant 2.0-litre turbo-diesel powertrain to consumers much before the statutory deadline," Datta said.
</p><p>The Longitude version comes with standard features such as 17-inch alloys, safety aids such as anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control (TC), hill start assist (HSA), disc brakes on all four wheels, among others.
</p>The top-of-the-line Limited Plus trim comes with sun roof, auto headlamps, rain sensitive wipers, six airbags and 18-inch alloy wheels.   MSS

FCA India expands Jeep Compass range, drives in diesel automatic trims

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Dual-clutch transmissions got their start on race cars, but nowadays, they're common on supercars.</li><li>More recently, DCTs have moved to less-expensive vehicles.</li><li>Typically, they can operate in automatic or manual mode, using paddle shifters on the steering column.</li><li>I driven many DCT-equipped cars - here's a rundown of my favorites.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>As you all know, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-stick-shift-manual-transmission-cars-and-trucks-ranked-2020-4">I love stick-shifts!</a></p><p>But as the manual transmission has faded from the automotive landscape, it's been replaced by a high-end technology that was actually invented in the middle of the 20th century, but that didn't wind up in application until Porsche and Audi started to use it for endurance-racers.</p><p>It's called a "dual" or "twin" clutch. In a nutshell, a dual-clutch transmission divides the gears into two sets, odd and even, and enables an interrupted flow of torque from the engine to the driveshaft. This eliminates the need for a clutch pedal and, typically by using paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel, enables the driver to click through gears quite quickly.</p><p>Matching engine revs on downshifts isn't necessary, and the transmission can also operate in full automatic mode. (DCTs are part of the overall global automotive supply chain; big makers include ZF, Getrag, and BorgWarner.)</p><p>Dual-clutches are their own kind of fun. I most often encounter them in high-horsepower supercars and sports cars, where they offer obvious advantages. But in recent years, "DCTs" have begun to appear more often on cheaper vehicles.</p><p>I've driven plenty - here's a ranking of my favorites:</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Kyodo/via REUTERS</span></p><p class="caption">Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo poses in front of the new Honda NSX, at its Japan launch event in Tokyo, Japan.</p></div><p></p></div></div>For nearly three decades, the transmissions of choice were the four-speed automatic and the five-speed manual.</p><p>However, over the past couple of years, the number of gears in transmissions have skyrocketed.</p><p>Now, Honda has taken the madness to a whole new level with a patent for an 11-speed multi-clutch transmission, the <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20160919/OEM06/309199985/this-transmission-goes-to-11" target="_blank">Automotive News' Naoto Okamura reported</a>.</p><p>In addition to 11 gears, the patent also calls for three clutches - one more than the industry standard for this type of transmission.</p><p>According to the publication, Honda filed the patent in December of 2014, but its existence was only recently made public.</p><p>A representative from Honda was not immediately available for comment. </p><p>While the four- and five-speed transmissions offered solid, reliable performance, automakers have turned to higher gear counts as a strategy to achieve greater fuel economy without sacrificing potent acceleration.</p><p>As recently as 2012, Honda's mainstream products sold with five-speed automatics.</p><p>Currently Honda's mainstream offerings in the US use a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to get its power to the road. However, its Acura premium brand deploys a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission on its RLX Sport Hybrid sedan while its ILX and TLX sedans get an eight-speed DCT. The brand's new flagship NSX supercar gets a nine-speed DCT.</p><p>Honda isn't the only company bolting transmissions with sky high gears counts on their cars. All Fiat-Chrysler's cars come with nine-speed ZF automatics - as do many Mercedes-Benz models. Jaguar Land Rover, BMW, and Lexus prefer an eight-speed automatic transmission. While Audi and Infiniti prefer seven-speeds. ;</p><p>In addition, <a href="http://autoweek.com/article/technology/ford-mustang-leak-new-ten-speed-automatic-transmission" target="_blank">Ford and</a> <a href="http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/home.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2016/may/0511-10speed-gm.html" target="_blank">GM are both readying 10-speed automatic</a> transmission for release in the near future.</p><p>Venturing towards double digit gear counts is not without risk. Thus far, no manufacturer has been able to smooth out the the rough edges on any transmission with more than eight gears. In addition, more gears and more clutches also translates into greater levels of complexity. This $450 semi-automatic espresso machine is a commercial-grade workhorse for a fraction of the price - here's how it works

I knew I'd have to drive there, but I was nervous about driving in a country that's notorious for its aggressive drivers. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I wasn't sure how I'd navigate new roads, signs written in a foreign language, and using a stick shift for the first time. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Though there are a few automatic cars in Italy, the majority of cars there have manual transmissions. And when they are available, automatic cars tend to cost significantly more to rent than manual. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">However, after a failed driving lesson in a manual car where I continually stalled out, I decided that it was worth it to pay for an automatic car.  </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I checked several booking sites to compare the costs for automatic car rentals, like <a href="http://www.kayak.com/">Kayak</a> and <a href="http://www.expedia.com/">Expedia</a>, and even went directly to the rental companies sites for Budget and Avis. However, I found it tricky to search for automatic cars on those sites.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Since I was renting in Europe, I found the most helpful sites to be <a href="http://www.holidayautos.com/">Holiday Autos</a>, and <a href="http://www.autoeurope.com/">Auto Europe</a>, which allow you to specifically search for automatic cars. Holiday Autos brought up cheaper rates and seemed easier to navigate, but I wanted to see if I could find even better fares, so I called the car rental companies directly. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">When I took the time to actually call Budget and Hertz, the companies listed on Holiday Autos, I found that they had several automatic cars available and their rates were even cheaper. When I mentioned that I was a AAA member, my rental cost was discounted even more. Though they did have automatic cars available, the downside was that most of the cars were small-compact or economy size-and I was looking for at least a midsize car. I booked an economy size car anyway.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In the end, I paid just 245 euros (about $300) for 5 days in an automatic car. I was also upgraded from the small economy car to a full-size Volkswagen station wagon, which fortunately had a built-in GPS.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I also got an International Driving Permit, which is required for foreigners driving in Italy, in addition to a valid license from your home country. Though you may be able to rent a car in Italy without an IDP, you risk major fines if you get pulled over and don't have one. The IDP c</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">osts just $15, and you can apply for one through either <a href="http://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html">AAA</a> or the <a href="http://www.thenac.com/idp_faqs.htm">National Automobile Club.</a></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I'm so glad that I rented a car: It enabled me to leisurely explore small towns that would have otherwise been inaccessible. I'm also happy that I drove an automatic car. I'm not sure I'd have felt the same way if I had driven in a manual car, which would have been a much more stressful experience.</span></p>

Automakers have taken two path to solve this problem: more forward gears; and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs).</p><p>Neither is a perfect fix. Adding gears to an automatic transmission - 7-, 8-, and 9-speeds are becoming common - means that a car's computer needs to have modes that will enable more aggressive driving. Otherwise, the transmission's brain will make a beeline for the "overdrive" gears to max out the MPGs. Downshifts for acceleration can be balky: the power takes too long to come on.</p><p>CVTs eliminate this problem by eliminating the gears. The CVT-equipped car has in theory an infinite range of gearings and can match power to driving conditions to maximize fuel-economy. It's the ideal solution for vehicles were the MPGs matter and performance doesn't, such as hybrids and gas-sipping compact SUVs.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Honda</span></p><p class="caption">CVTs have clear advantages.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Trouble is that consumers have been raised on a lifetime diet of old-school transmissions that pull hard when they're supposed to. <a href="http://www.strategyand.pwc.com/perspectives/2016-auto-industry-trends">PwC noted this in a recent report on trends in the auto industry</a>, focusing on <a href="http://world.honda.com/automobile-technology/CVT/">Honda's implementation of CVTs in many of its vehicles</a>:</p><p><span>Obviously, this is a generation challenge: more mature drivers have long-held beliefs about how cars should behave.</span></p><p><span>But CVTs are routinely savaged by the automotive media, and there's a trickle-down effect. Enthusiasts are justified in despising the things. Just give me my 5-speed manual and a clutch! But most consumers will appreciate the better fuel economy once they get used to the CVT's quirks. </span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Honda</span></p><p class="caption">The system uses a belt instead of fixed gears.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>I've driven plenty of CVT cars - my own Toyota Prius has a type of CVT - and I think they're fine. If I want quick access to horsepower and torque, I'm not going to worry too much about MPGs. And the CVT-equipped vehicles I've driven, after a brief learning curve, are plenty fast enough when needed.</span></p><p><span>But consumers' reactions shouldn't be underestimated. People are surprisingly conservative about new stuff when it comes to cars. Hybrids are the most successful new innovation to come along in half a century, and they succeeded mainly because they didn't ask drivers to accept a paradigm shift: they still ran on gas, for example. </span></p><p><span>However, the history of the car business is one of constant incremental improvement. An automaker like Honda is playing a long game with CVTs. There's a great new transmission technology on cars - but consumers don't like it

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Honda</span></p><p class="caption">The 2017 Honda HR-V is a small crossover that comes with a CVT.</p></div><p></p></div></div>One of the big advantages that traditional gas-powered cars have over electric vehicles is that for people who like to feel the power of an engine, internal combustion is the way to go.</p><p>Electric cars have lightning acceleration, but because they effectively have only one gear, they can feel a bit space-age and technical after that initial burst of speed.</p><p>Plenty of drivers grew up on that visceral sense of having the car shift through the gears with an automatic transmission. </p><p>Plenty of other drivers shifted the gears themselves with a manual. I learned to drive on an auto, but soon picked up the skills needed to "drive stick," and I still prefer it.</p><p>But my feelings aside, traditional transmissions for gas cars are inherently not fuel efficient. Automakers have taken two paths to solve this problem: more forward gears; and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs).</p><p>Neither is a perfect fix. Adding gears to an automatic transmission - 7-, 8-, and 9-speeds are becoming common - means that a car's computer needs to have modes that will enable more aggressive driving. Otherwise, the transmission's brain will make a beeline for the "overdrive" gears to max out the MPGs. Downshifts for acceleration can be balky: the power takes too long to come on.</p><p>For example, when you put a new Porsche 911 Carrera with an automatic transmission (a "PDK" dual-clutch set, actually) in Sport Plus mode, it will hold off on a shift from second to third gear for an eternity, if you aren't laying heavy on the throttle. </p><p>CVTs eliminate this problem by eliminating the gears. The CVT-equipped car has in theory an infinite range of gearings and can match power to driving conditions to maximize fuel-economy. It's the ideal solution for vehicles were the MPGs matter and performance doesn't, such as hybrids and gas-sipping compact SUVs.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Honda</span></p><p class="caption">CVTs have clear advantages.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Trouble is that consumers have been raised on a lifetime diet of old-school transmissions that pull hard when they're supposed to. <a href="http://www.strategyand.pwc.com/perspectives/2016-auto-industry-trends">PwC noted this in a recent report on trends in the auto industry</a>, focusing on <a href="http://world.honda.com/automobile-technology/CVT/">Honda's implementation of CVTs in many of its vehicles</a>:</p><p><span>Obviously, this is a generational challenge: more mature drivers have long-held beliefs about how cars should behave.</span></p><p><span>But CVTs are routinely savaged by the automotive media, and there's a trickle-down effect. Enthusiasts are justified in despising the things. Just give me my 5-speed manual and a clutch! A lot of new cars have an innovative, high-tech transmission - but consumers don't like it

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nissan announced that the 2025 Versa subcompact sedan will start at $17,190.</li><li>It will be the cheapest new car on sale in the US and the only one to start under $20,000.</li></ul><p>The cheapest new car for sale in America is about to get more expensive.</p><p>The Mitsubishi Mirage, which currently starts at $16,695, will be discontinued at the end of 2024, while the $19,990 Kia Forte will be replaced in 2025 with the pricier K4 sedan.</p><p>That leaves just one option for consumers with budgets under $20,000: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nissan-versa-sv-review-first-drive-features-verdict-2019-10">The Nissan Versa. </a></p><p>The automaker said in September that the 2025 Versa would start at $17,190. That's $500 more than before but still cheap enough to claim the title of cheapest new car on the market. </p><p>But the subcompact sedan will be fairly lonely at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/car-buying-prices-inventory-best-deals-dealerships-2023-8">the affordable end of the spectrum</a> as most of its closest competitors are set for the scrapheap.</p><div type="image" title="The left front corner of a red 2024 Nissan Versa SR sedan parked in front of a silver concrete building." height="4000" width="6000" msid="113609605" hostid="261" sizebytes="939312"></div><p>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.caranddriver.com/hyundai/venue">Hyundai Venue</a>, which also starts at $19,990, is expected to see a minor price hike past the $20,000 mark. </p><p>The next lowest-priced options for consumers next year will be the Kia Soul at $20,295 and the Chevrolet Trax at $20,400.</p><p>The Versa's starting price is less than half of the<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-new-car-market-is-a-little-less-brutal-2024-3"> average transaction price of a new car these days</a> and about $8,000 less than the average price of a used car.</p><p>The current fourth-generation Nissan Versa debuted in 2019 and will enter 2025 virtually unchanged, getting only updated LED headlights and three free oil changes.</p><p>The base $17,000 Versa S is the definition of basic transportation with a 1.6 liter, 122 horsepower naturally aspirated, four-cylinder engine and an old-school, five-speed manual transmission.</p><p>What isn't old school are its standard safety features that include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, rear automatic braking, and high beam assist.</p><div type="image" title="The front dash of a 2025 Nissan Versa SR sedan." height="3918" width="5877" msid="113609607" hostid="261" sizebytes="1046646"></div><p>It does come standard with a few minor luxuries, such as a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth audio streaming, and keyless entry.</p><p>But there really isn't much more beyond that.</p><p>If you need the car to handle the gear changes, the price point jumps to $18,990 for a Versa S with Nissan's Xtronic continuously variable transmission.</p><p>At the top of the range is the $21,190 Versa SR, which comes with sporty 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, heated mirrors, SR-branded heated front seats, and a dark chrome front grille.</p>

There's only one new car for sale for less than $20,000

<keyword id="19994372" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki-india-limited" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki India Limited</keyword> (MSIL) has introduced a new variant of its popular hatchback, the <keyword id="23141056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="epic-new-swift" source="Orion">Epic New Swift</keyword>, offering an S-CNG model that promises to set a new benchmark in fuel efficiency. With a claimed mileage of 32.85 km per kg, this variant promises to be the most fuel-efficient premium hatchback in its segment, according to the automaker.<br /><br /><h2><keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>'s Epic New <keyword id="23141055" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swift-s-cng" source="keywords">Swift S-CNG</keyword> launched</h2>The launch of the Swift S-CNG marks another step in Maruti Suzuki's commitment to providing greener mobility solutions. As the demand for eco-friendly vehicles continues to rise, the automaker has expanded its Swift S-CNG lineup to three variants: V, V(O), and Z, offering customers more choices. Each variant comes equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, and their ex-showroom prices are set at Rs 819,500, Rs 846,500, and Rs 919,500, respectively.<br /><br />Maruti Suzuki has been at the forefront of the CNG vehicle segment in India since 2010. Over the years, it has sold more than 2 million S-CNG vehicles, making it a leader in the industry. Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer of Marketing and Sales at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, talked about the company’s achievements and said, “Our S-CNG technology has democratized green mobility solutions, and we are proud to offer the widest range of 14 S-CNG powered vehicles across all body styles.”<br /><br />The automaker’s CNG vehicle sales have witnessed significant growth, with a 46.8% increase in the passenger vehicle category during the 2023-24 financial year compared to the previous year. Additionally, since 2010, Maruti Suzuki has maintained a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 28% in its CNG sales, underlining the strong demand for eco-friendly vehicles in India.<br /><h2>Swift S-CNG features<br /></h2><br />The new Swift S-CNG not only promises to offer best-in-segment fuel efficiency but also packs a range of features designed to enhance the driving experience. It comes equipped with six airbags for enhanced safety, automatic climate control, a rear AC vent, and a wireless charger.
