However, he's confident that many other frustrations are legitimate and widespread.</p><p>Avedian shared what he considers to be the top concerns of Uber and Lyft drivers: declining pay, driver safety, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-for-avoiding-deactivation-or-firing-uber-doordash-lyft-2023-11">wrongful deactivations</a>.</p><h2 id="80c679ae-d004-44ad-b014-71d07f412d03">Low earnings and declining share of pay</h2><p>Avedian said drivers have experienced a decline in earnings over the last few years. Drivers have reported being offered lower-paying rides more frequently than in past years, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-lyft-pay-tips-minimum-wage-driving-gig-work-expenses-2024-5">sometimes below $3</a>, and have seen fewer promotions and bonuses.</p><p>"The trend has not been the driver's friend," Avedian said.</p><p>Avedian said that Uber and Lyft have also recently taken a greater share of the rider's fare. Whereas drivers used to take home about 80% of the fare, he said drivers "are lucky" if they receive 50%.</p><p>In a statement, an Uber spokesperson said that "Uber's take rate has remained largely flat over the past few years," adding that "the amount of the rider fare that goes toward local government taxes and fees, as well as commercial auto insurance, has increased significantly."</p><p>Lyft says its drivers are guaranteed to earn at least <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-earnings-gig-driver-rider-payments-uber-hourly-pay-stock-2024-2">70% of rider payments</a> each week, after external fees like local taxes and government-mandated insurance.</p><p>"We've heard lots of feedback around consistent themes — earnings, deactivations, and safety — and we're taking action to address them," David Risher, Lyft's CEO, said in a statement provided to BI.</p><p>Though the companies refute some of the findings, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-lyft-doordash-drivers-earn-below-minimum-wage-tips-study-2024-5">UC Berkeley study</a> from May found that many gig drivers earn less than their area's minimum wage after accounting for expenses.</p><p>An Uber spokesperson told BI that drivers, on average, make more than $30 an hour while active in the app. In February, Lyft said the typical US driver who used a personal vehicle <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-uber-lyft-drivers-make-per-ride-2023-10">earned</a> about $31 per engaged hour — and $23 an hour after accounting for expenses like gas and maintenance. However, many drivers have told BI has spoken to said they earn less than this.</p><p>George, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/is-driving-for-uber-worth-it-declining-pay-more-competition-2024-4">full-time Uber driver</a> in Cleveland who has driven since 2017, said he wants to quit but has few other options. He made $109,000 in driver earnings last year but only took home $17,000 after Uber's commission, gas, and maintenance fees. He said he has to work nearly double the hours to make the same amount in a week he made last year.</p><p>Drivers have also reported lower or more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/should-you-tip-uber-lyft-driver-doordash-rideshare-food-delivery-2024-6">inconsistent tips</a> over the past year, with UC Berkeley finding that customers were three times as likely to tip delivery drivers as rideshare drivers. Uber previously told BI that tipping frequency and average tip size have both roughly doubled over the last four years.</p><h2 id="60a7044f-78e6-4e5f-905b-8d91790539e8">Some drivers worry about their safety</h2><p>Avedian said many drivers also have concerns about their safety.</p><p>"Not a day goes by that we don't hear about carjacking of Uber or Lyft drivers or, unfortunately, physical assaults," he said.</p><p>Julie, a part-time Uber driver in Cleveland, hasn't always felt safe during her five years in the gig economy, she <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/women-uber-lyft-driver-female-safety-tips-gig-economy-work-2023-12">previously told BI</a>. Some riders have threatened her, damaged her vehicle, or encouraged her to speed. Due to her safety concerns, Julie said she only drives during the daytime.</p><p>One of her worst experiences came when a customer who appeared to be unwell rolled down the windows and yelled that he was being kidnapped.</p><p>"He kept telling me he killed many people," said Julie, who asked to use a pseudonym and spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of professional repercussions. "I reported it to Uber, and nothing was done."</p><p>An Uber spokesperson said that the company has in-app safety features that show its commitment to safety, including an emergency button, an audio recording feature, the ability to chat with a live safety agent, and its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uber.com/newsroom/ridecheck/">RideCheck</a> system, which can detect if something unexpected occurs on a trip like a crash. They said the company has piloted a new rider verification program that will help confirm riders who they say they are and a <a target="_blank" href="https://help.uber.com/am/driving-and-delivering/article/record-my-ride---frequently-asked-questions?nodeId=7f86cc51-2c3e-4888-8dc1-0ac2b6337b92">Record My Ride</a> feature that turns a driver's phone into a dashcam.</p><p>A Lyft spokesperson told BI that the company has an around-the-clock safety response team that can be contacted via phone or chat, a trauma-informed care team with specialized training, and a location-sharing option drivers can use to ensure loved ones know where they are.</p><h2 id="e74002a0-804e-40d7-9741-ed3ee1910a1d">Drivers worry about being wrongly deactivated — and don't receive enough support</h2><p>Avedian believes many drivers have been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-for-avoiding-deactivation-or-firing-uber-doordash-lyft-2023-11">wrongly deactivated</a> from the Uber platform. When drivers try to contact Uber to discuss their deactivations or other issues, he said the company's driver support system and agents are often unhelpful.</p><p>Drivers can be deactivated for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uber.com/us/en/drive/safety/deactivations/">various reasons</a>, including a low platform rating, a failed background check, an expired license, and customer accusations of safety issues. However, Avedian said drivers are sometimes deactivated due to "fraudulent rider claims."</p><p>Aaron Lavender, an Uber and Lyft driver in Colorado, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teacher-quit-to-become-full-time-uber-lyft-driver-2023-9">previously told BI</a> he was deactivated from the Uber app for three days after a customer filed a complaint saying that his appearance and smell made them suspect he was intoxicated. Lavender said he was eventually cleared by Uber following a brief investigation and had his account reactivated.</p><p>"Stories of permanent deactivation do scare me and make me not want to rely solely on this job," he said.</p><p>Some drivers have a harder time getting their deactivations reversed. An Uber Eats driver in Oregon was making a delivery when the customer changed the dropoff location, he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-gig-workers-are-fighting-against-sudden-account-deactivations-2023-9">previously told BI</a>. The new destination turned a 10-minute trip into a one-hour one, so he contacted Uber Eats support to try to cancel the order.</p><p>He said the support agent approved the cancellation, but a few days later, his account was deactivated.</p><p>"All of a sudden, it says my account is under investigation for fraud," he said. "It just says 'fraud.' It doesn't give any details."</p><p>After two months of exchanging messages with agents, he said his account was eventually reactivated.</p><p>An Uber spokesperson told BI that last year, the company announced <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uber.com/blog/deactivations-principles/">major changes</a> to its deactivation process to make it more fair to drivers. This includes giving them a "clear process to appeal a deactivation and protecting them from false allegations and unfair ratings."</p><p>The spokesperson said that drivers have a dedicated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uber.com/ca/en/drive/driver-app/phone-support/">support team</a>. For safety-related issues, there is a 24/7 Safety Incident Reporting <a target="_blank" href="https://help.uber.com/riders/article/safety-incident-reporting-line?nodeId=d3551d19-cb72-43c5-813f-8042009ecc01">line</a>. The company also has 24/7 customer support available through the Uber app to "get users answers to common questions and resolve issues as quickly as possible."</p><p>A Lyft spokesperson told BI that the company rolled out an in-app button earlier this year that allows drivers to appeal deactivation decisions. <p class="drop-cap">Ingrid Vilorio, 42, knows what it means to fight to make a job into a good job.</p><p>Vilorio, a fast-food worker at a Jack in the Box in California, is one of the people reshaping work culture from the inside out. She's gone on strike for better staffing, quarantine pay, and paid sick days. She said it's the "best thing" she could have done.</p><p>"It didn't just change my work life or the conditions in my work, but I also then was able to start learning about my rights as a worker," Vilorio told Business Insider in Spanish, speaking through a translator. "It's not just my boss who has rights — but I have rights."</p><p>Vilorio is one of the workers forcing a transformation of work through striking, unionizing, and demanding better. Despite threats to job security such as layoffs,<strong> </strong>the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-making-workers-employees-return-to-office-rto-wfh-hybrid-2023-1">rise</a> of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snap-snapchat-rto-employees-wifi-usage-morale-2023-11">return-to-office mandates</a>, and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-jobs-at-risk-replacement-artificial-intelligence-ai-labor-trends-2023-02">prospect of artificial intelligence taking over jobs</a>, workers have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/year-workers-said-no-labor-shortages-unions-great-resignation-quits-2022-5">realized</a> what's akin to letting a genie out of the bottle: Their jobs don't have to be just jobs. They can be <em>good</em> jobs.</p><p>That's a reversal from the past 50 or so years of work, said Rob Bruno, a professor of labor and employment relations at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the director of the Project for Middle Class Renewal, as well as the author of the forthcoming book "<a target="_blank" href="https://usw2.nyl.as/t1/275/7rqnamq3jxqw4idg6dkho0sz4/0/aa71971eebfbfb2ca049e97d867ed34400a241518d0f9db2ea12e4ecd52e5321">What Work Is</a>."</p><p>Beginning in the 1970s, jobs began deteriorating, Bruno said, citing research. Wage growth <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-quiet-fleecing-wages-pay-productivity-economy-recession-inflation-2022-9">has stalled since then</a>, what's been termed "quiet fleecing." Workers were disaffected and unsatisfied — and the decline continued from there. It wasn't just about morale: Material benefits <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-quiet-fleecing-wages-pay-productivity-economy-recession-inflation-2022-9">were sliding, too</a>. Pay didn't keep<strong> </strong>pace with productivity,<strong> </strong>and pensions and time off slowly began disappearing.</p><p>But within that dissatisfaction there was one key nuance: While people did not like their jobs, they still valued work itself.</p><p>"What I think has happened nationally is we've seen this resistance to work that is soul-crushing and mind-numbing and body-breaking," Bruno said.</p><p>That appeared in the job shifting of the past three years,<strong> </strong>as well as the resurgent interest in and support of organized labor. The push to make jobs back into careers, and good jobs, is just beginning. And if it continues at this pace, it may reshape the workplace for decades to come — especially, Bruno said, with the soon-to-be dominant <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-how-to-manage-nine-to-five-work-schedule-2023-11">Gen Z rethinking how work fits into their identities</a>.</p><p>"A quality job isn't just 40 hours with overtime, with healthcare benefits, with decent pay. Unionization is strongly correlated with people feeling their jobs are better," Bruno said. "But I think it is all of these other social, psychological, value-based aspects of what it means to work in society, and the kind of work that actually contributes to a quality life."</p><p class="drop-cap">The idea of a comfortable job that can provide a worker with enough money to live happily, or support a family, all while providing some meaning to daily work might sound familiar. It's the concept that underpins the middle class in America, that group of workers meant to be tucked in between the jet setters and those striving to move up in the world.</p><p>Too bad the middle class <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americas-middle-class-shrinks-as-richest-households-make-more-2022-4">has been shrinking</a> for decades.</p><p>"The last four decades we have seen a gap between growing productivity and stagnating worker wages," Julie Su, the acting secretary of labor, told BI. "And we've also seen just the massive gap between CEO salaries and frontline worker pay."</p><p>But that's where Su, and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/president-biden-picket-united-auto-workers-strike-union-2023-9">Biden administration</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/union-petitions-increased-since-biden-took-office-nlrb-2023-10">is trying to step in</a>. Coming out of the COVID-19 emergency, workers realized they didn't want to just be called essential — "they want to be treated as essential," she said. That drive comes alongside the Biden administration's stated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joe-biden-economy-is-bidenomics-working-policies-progress-unnoticed-2023-9">desire</a> to build out the economy from the bottom and middle, rather than through trickling down gains from the top.</p><p>"One of the things that's very powerful at this moment is the sense of solidarity between and among working people," Su said.</p><p>For instance, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/middle-class-workers-falling-behind-unions-could-help-biden-administration-2023-8">Treasury Department found</a> in an August report that middle-class workers had been falling behind with more debt, more expensive houses, and increasingly pricier college education. That <a target="_blank" href="https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy1706">same report</a> found one thing that could reverse that inequality: unions. Americans have been increasingly embracing labor unions, with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-union-approval-hasnt-been-this-high-since-1965-2022-8">support skyrocketing over the past 15 or so years</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/510281/unions-strengthening.aspx">Gallup polling found</a>.</p><iframe title="American approval of labor unions" id="datawrapper-chart-ts5NP" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/ts5NP/1/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;" height="400"></iframe><p>For some workers, that labor resurgence is paying off: Look no further than the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uaw-strike-contract-raises-pay-details-ford-gm-stellantis-2023-10">economic wins racked up by the United Auto Workers</a> in its unprecedented strike, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uaw-strike-support-union-bipartisan-2023-10">powered in part</a> by messaging on the disparity between how much CEOs and firms are making compared with their workers.</p><p>That newfound willingness to push back has also touched workers across the economic spectrum. For those in traditionally high-earning, white-collar roles, friction came when firms ordered them back into the office.</p><p>"What we found was that those workers pushed back and said, 'Well, no, actually we don't have to,'" Bruno said. Indeed, BI has spoken with several workers who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retire-return-to-office-baby-boomer-never-wants-go-back-2023-4">quit rather than return to the office</a> — some for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/remote-job-return-to-office-quit-job-double-salary-2023-8">new and better jobs</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/remote-work-return-to-office-quit-job-micromanager-boss-salary-2023-4">others just to avoid getting yanked back in</a>.</p><p class="drop-cap">Of course, it hasn't been smooth sailing for every worker pushing for more. Bosses are still <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bosses-back-in-charge-rto-workers-layoffs-power-2023-9">seizing back power</a> with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/layoffs-sweeping-the-us-these-are-the-companies-making-cuts-2023">layoffs</a> or strict return-to-office mandates, and union membership is at a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-union-membership-fell-lowest-rate-record-2022-2023-1">record low</a>. The red-hot labor market that's helped enable some of these changes is cooling down, especially as low-wage workers see their wage gains begin to temper.</p><iframe title="Wage growth by wage level" id="datawrapper-chart-3es85" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/3es85/2/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;" height="450"></iframe><p>Even so, there's been what Bruno called a "national consciousness raising" around what a quality job is. For employers who want to retain their workers, or lure in Gen Zers — who helped drive the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-jobs-generation-quiet-quitting-great-resignation-recession-economy-2023-2">Great Resignation</a> and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-gen-z-is-changing-work-most-pro-labor-generation-2022-11">union boom</a> — it might pay to listen up.</p><p>And just hiking pay isn't going to cut it for workers anymore. The <a target="_blank" href="https://fedcommunities.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2023-worker-voices-special-brief-perspective-job-quality.pdf">Worker Voices project</a>, a research venture from the Federal Reserve Banks of Philadelphia and Atlanta, asked 170 workers and job seekers without a college degree what a quality job meant to them.</p><p>While compensation was important, the participants said they wanted jobs that offered flexibility, engagement, enjoyment, and a manageable workload,<strong> </strong>Keith Wardrip, the senior community-development research manager and advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, told BI.</p><p>They wanted to be treated well and feel like they had job security, Wardrip added.</p><p>"There are opportunities in this research and in our findings for employers to potentially consider how they can not only improve the hiring process but also how they can improve their retention of talented workers," Wardrip said.</p><p>And thinking toward a future full of quality jobs is a message workers are taking to heart. Vilorio, the fast-food worker in California, said that in 15 or 20 years, she hoped the new people entering her industry would know "there was a group who fought for them to have the wages and benefits that I hope one day they have."</p>

When receiving a phone call users can choose to answer or reject the call, like usual, or they can choose to have Google Assistant pickup the call the screen it. In the demonstration, the team had Duplex successfully call and schedule a haircut. Because of the lifelike-ness of the AI's voice, as well as its use of natural pauses in speech, the hairdresser on the other end had no idea they were speaking to a machine. </span></li></ul><h2><strong>How to optimize Google Assistant</strong></h2><ul><li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">To make sure you're getting the most out of your Google Assistant, try exploring the settings and toggling on and off extra options. For example, in the "My Day" briefing you can select if you'd like to hear the weather, the news, and or a traffic report. You can also select what kind of news you'd like to hear to stop Google from playing others.</span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">And, as with any great assistant, part of utilizing Google Assistant is to let it take over tedious tasks to save you time. For example, instead of fumbling to take a selfie yourself simply ask "OK Google, take a selfie" and the assistant will open the camera for you and set a 3-second time for the perfect picture. Similarly, users can ask Google Assistant to turn on or off their phone's flashlight hands free. </span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another unique feature to take advantage of with assistant on your smartphone is something called Lens. By clicking the lens icon within the Google Assistant app the assistant will launch the phone's camera and help users learn more about what they're seeing. However, there are very few good instances of branded content that have stood out in the clutter and stayed with us for a long time. <br /><br />TVF’s Tripling was far ahead of its time. It was launched in 2016, when content marketing had just started getting some recognition in India, and is still referred to as a great case study in the industry for keeping the brand, Tiago, at the center of its narrative. The car had a character of its own. It moved forward with the series, surviving various ups and downs like others. <br /><br />We spotted three good examples last week that had all the ingredients it takes to create perfect content. <p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The dusty, industrial town of Ciudad Frontera, Mexico, has moved from the far reaches of the global auto supply chain to the front lines of an investigation into why air bags from Takata Corp are blowing up with lethal force in accidents.</span></p>
<p>The Takata plant there has been confirmed as the source of defective air bags made in 2001 and 2002 and again around 2012, according to recall records, automakers and regulators. In 2006, the factory blew up, driving home for workers and residents the volatility and risk of the explosive compound at the core of Takata's air bags.</p>
<p>Airbag manufacturers such as Takata favor low-humdity regions to assemble airbags, due the the risks associated with inflator propellant. Prior to this week, the massive Takata recall in the U.S. had been regionally focused on southern states and territories such as Puerto Rico. </p>
<p>But on Monday,  the <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) expanded its recall demand of major automakers to be nationwide.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">A whopping 17 million vehicles with Takata airbags have been recalled globally. In the U.S., 11 million vehicles are now under recall.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Additionally, NHTSA has ordered Tokyo-based Takata Corp to submit a wide array of records, including those pertaining to manufacturing controls at the Mexican plant, as part of an investigation into why its air bags have shot shrapnel at drivers in five fatal accidents from Oklahoma to Malaysia.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">On Thursday, executive from Takata and Honda are scheduled to testify before Congress. Apart from automakers and Takata, which controls over 20 percent of the global airbag market, questions are now being raised about the governments lack of urgency regarding a recall whose details are disturbing. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The Takata recall follows on the heels of two other massive recalls in recent years: the 2010 Toytoa recall for issues related to vehicles allegedly accelerating out of control; and the more recent General Motors recall, for a widespread problem with ignition switches that can disable airbags in certain cars.</span></p>
<p>All five of the Takata victims - including three in the last 14 months - were hit by shrapnel from air bags in Honda vehicles. At least another 160 injury claims involving cars from several automakers have been reported to NHTSA, according to Reuters.</p>
<p>Interviews with 21 former and current Takata workers and consultants, along with company presentations and email reviewed by Reuters reveal the pressure inside the Japanese supplier to ramp up output and drive down costs for inflators - the mechanism that triggers air bags to deploy in a fraction of a second after a crash.</p>
<p>The accounts include the concerns of managers that workers broke quality rules to boost output. It isn't clear whether the productivity pressures and quality issues they describe led to specific accidents. But the portrait they draw suggests that top executives at the company were not fully aware of what was going on at the foreign factories that churned out millions of air bags. So far, the Takata problems have led to the recall of over 16 million vehicles worldwide.</p>
<p>"We are highly focused on cooperating with NHTSA and the (U.S.) government investigation," Takata's U.S. spokesman Alby Berman said in response to questions sent by email.</p>
<p>The NHTSA administrative order requires Takata to supply documents and answer questions under oath related to any problems in producing air bag inflators. The order was prompted in part by an Oct. 17 Reuters report detailing production and quality problems at the Mexico plant. The company has until Dec. 1 to comply. In addition to the regulatory probe, Takata faces a criminal investigation by U.S. prosecutors.The investigations come as the Mexico plant gears up to make parts needed to replace millions of air bags in the ongoing vehicle recalls.</p>
<p><strong>'WE'RE SCARED'</strong></p>
<p>On the evening of March 30, 2006 Takata's Mexican air bag factory exploded a year into its run as the company's main inflator production point. The series of blasts blew out windows on houses a kilometer away and threw up fireballs as workers and residents fled to escape injury, witnesses say.</p>
<p>Remarkably, residents and workers say, there were no injuries. Hundreds of workers inside the factory that evening all managed to evacuate, some by climbing over a factory fence because a gate had been mistakenly left shut.</p>
<p>Takata never announced the exact cause of the 2006 explosion, workers there at the time said. An official at the fire department, where Takata has donated trucks, said he had no records from that time.</p>
<p>Some workers said the blast was fueled by bunkers of ammonium nitrate stored next to the plant. Takata air bags are inflated using ammonium nitrate, an explosive propellant that is encased in a canister to make an inflator.</p>
<p>Josefina Vargas lives next door to the Takata factory. She said the first sign of trouble from the factory was a thin line of smoke visible from the sidewalk in front of her house. Vargas, 52, who did not work at Takata, remembers her shock as explosions threw fiery debris almost to her feet as she sat outside her house. Vargas and others fled by foot and by car.</p>
<p>"We're scared," Vargas told Reuters in recounting the explosion from her home where she sells tortillas and cookies. "When we hear a sound now, we think it's the plant."</p>
<p>Takata's Berman said the company's safety training had "allowed for the successful evacuation of thousands of employees within a few minutes of the discovery of the fire and prevented a possible loss of life." He said the company had put new safety policies in place after the accident.</p>
<p>Alejandro Perez, a former Takata facility manager, stayed at work for four days straight after the accident, taking short breaks to go home and nap or shower, he said.</p>
<p>The company offered workers who returned and stayed on the job special incentives, Perez and other workers say. Takata raffled off televisions, refrigerators and cars, and even held Easter services at the plant for workers on the job that April 16. </p>
<p>Takata managers were proud of the comeback. They marked the rebuilding with a commemorative in-house coffee table book with pictures of the blast, and baseball caps stitched with the exact date and time of the first explosion. The company took a $21 million charge as it prepared for an IPO in November of that year.</p>
<p>Within a month, Takata had resumed production, fast enough so that customers such as Honda Motor Co., Ford Motor Co. didn't have to shut down their own factories due to lack of parts. Rival Autoliv also stepped up its output to make up for what Takata could not supply, the companies said at the time.</p>
<p>Demand for airbags in the current auto market is high, as automakers surge toward sales figures not seen since the pre-recession peak for the industry. In 2014, the U.S. auto market in on pace to see 17 million new cars and trucks sold.</p>
<p>Takata has protested NHTSA's demand for a nationwide recall, on the grounds that fixing potentially defect airbags outside the initial recall region will limit supplies of replacement components that could be used in places where the airbags are more likely to malfunction. </p>
<p><strong>UNRELENTING PRESSURE</strong></p>
<p>On the ground, the pressure to restart and make up for lost production was unrelenting, especially from American managers who had been flown to Mexico, said Perez, the former facility manager. He was laid off at the plant in 2008. Other workers also said pressure remained high.</p>
<p>Takata workers said they had to make a quota of inflators - sometimes more than 200 per hour. "If you didn't make it, you would be behind and they wouldn't pay you a productivity bonus," said Jose Sanchez, 42, a former worker who made inflators at Takata from 2004 to 2010.</p>
<p>In 2010 and 2011, the Monclova plant was consistently behind quota in making a new kind of driver's-side air bag inflator. In an effort to crack down, supervisors used security cameras to catch workers on a line "fooling around," and apparently engaged in conversation rather than making inflators, an email circulated to staff that included still images from a camera shows. Takata's Berman said security cameras at the plant were there to prevent theft and not intended to monitor workers.</p>
<p>Around the same time, a worker was also cutting corners by trying to "rework" or fix defective parts on the inflator assembly line. That would have made it easier for them to meet output quotas. But Takata prohibited that practice in order to reduce the chances of bad parts being shipped to automakers, according to an email. Inflators identified as defective were supposed to be placed in a separate, red bin and then examined and repaired if possible by other workers, according to former workers.</p>
<p>Guillermo Apud, a supervisor at the plant, scolded other employees about this problem in a May 2011 email reviewed by Reuters. "Rework on the line is PROHIBITED!!!!" he said. "We can't have leaders/materials people/operators REWORKING material left and right without ANY control, this is why we have defect upon defect," his email, translated from Spanish, said. "We need to change NOW!"</p>
<p>Apud declined to comment. Berman said Apud was acting to reinforce company safety guidelines after finding an employee had improperly reworked an inflator. "The email is an example of the manager performing his supervisory responsibility and enforcing company quality controls," he said.</p>
<p>In 2012, Takata workers at the Mexico plant put the wrong part into inflators being readied for shipment, according to documents Takata and automakers filed with NHTSA. More than 350,000 vehicles from three different car makers were later recalled for that defect. The mistake was possible because parts bins were kept too close together, the company told regulators in Japan.</p>
<p>The mistake was not discovered until after a lawsuit was filed over an October 2013 accident when Brandi Owens, then 25, hit another car in stop-and-go traffic while driving a new GM Chevrolet Cruze. The Cruze's air bag exploded and hit Owens so hard it blinded her in the left eye, she said in the lawsuit filed in April 2014. Her case prompted a recall two months later, in June. Owens settled with Takata and General Motors Co on undisclosed terms in August.</p>
<p>A fatal accident just after that June vehicle recall illustrates the complexity of the problem facing automakers and safety investigators. Takata said a defective inflator from its now-shuttered plant in the U.S. state of Georgia was installed in a 2003 Honda City assembled in Thailand and sold in Malaysia.</p>
<p>On July 27, Law Suk Leh was driving that car when she hit another vehicle in the Malaysian town of Sibu on Borneo island. Law, who was in the final stages of pregnancy, was killed by a "severe puncture wound" to the neck when she was hit by a metal fragment after the car's air bag blew apart, Malaysian police said. Honda revealed details of the death last week in announcing a recall of another 170,000 vehicles to replace their air bags.</p>
<p><strong>BOOMING DEMAND</strong></p>
<p>For Takata, building the factory in Mexico in 2000 would enable it to help meet booming demand for air bags with cheaper labor, projections prepared for executives show.</p>
<p>By moving inflator production from two plants in the United States to Mexico, Takata saved $70 million in labor costs over five years to 2006, an internal company presentation shows, dropping the labor cost for making an inflator from $2 to about 75 cents. Takata's automaker customers benefited: the cost to them fell by more than 20 percent to less than $20 each, according to the presentation.</p>
<p>Mexico's auto industry has benefitted greatly from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which has enabled the country to position itself as source of low-cost labor in close proximity to the world's most dynamic market for automobiles: the United States.</p>
<p>By spring 2005, Takata's big bet on the Mexican factory appeared to be paying off. Workers at the Monclova plant, as it was known in the company, posed for a commemorative photo, raising both hands in the air in a banzai salute.</p>
<p>Soon afterward, Takata closed its factory in La Grange, Georgia, southwest of Atlanta. Takata had been reducing inflator production there and at a second U.S. plant in remote Moses Lake, Washington for four years, records show.</p>
<p>Worker morale had suffered at the plant in Moses Lake, built on the site of a former U.S. military base, workers there told Reuters. By 2000, a new management team prioritized meeting output quotas and enforced overtime as demand for U.S. cars and SUVs soared, former workers say. "We just burned people out," said one former worker, who like others asked not to be named. In 2002, the plant laid off 100 workers and sent more production to Mexico, media reports at the time said.</p>
<p>A series of mistakes by workers in handling ammonium nitrate at the La Grange, Georgia and Mexico plants between 2000 and 2002 left the explosive compound exposed to dangerous levels of humidity, Takata told regulators in the United States and Japan.</p>
<p>Takata says inflators could be susceptible to rupture if exposed to moisture or extreme humidity. The defect in Law's airbag in the Malaysian accident was caused by humid conditions at the Georgia plant, Takata and Honda said.</p>
<p>It is unclear how much Takata's headquarters in Tokyo knew about the problems at its inflator plants. Takata did not dispatch permanent staff from headquarters to the Mexican plant as it ramped up output, workers say.</p>
<p>A Takata safety auditor dispatched from the United States inspected the Mexican inflator plant in May 2011 and found problems in handling the volatile ammonium nitrate. His audit report, seen by Reuters, faulted the plant for not closing bags of the compound tightly enough and for storing scrapped or contaminated propellant near good material, risking mix-ups. He said in his report he would not send the audit to Takata's headquarters in Tokyo.</p>
<p>Shigehisa Takada, the grandson of the founder, now chairman and chief executive, has said the company made a mistake by allowing too much autonomy to its local managers in North America during a period of rapid growth. Takata acquired at least six companies in the United States and Germany between 1989 and 2012.</p>
<p>"Back then, the U.S. markets were expanding very rapidly, and we could not see everything that was happening there," according to a recording of Takada's speech to a closed shareholders meeting in June. It was his most recent public appearance.</p>
