<ul class="summary-list"><li>Bloomberg reported this week that Tesla would scale back production at its Shanghai factory.</li><li>Tesla is being outsold in both the Chinese and the European markets as competitors press in.</li></ul><p>What's Elon Musk to do when electric-vehicle makers start vying for Tesla's top spot in the US? That's a question investors will follow as Tesla faces steep competition in China's and Europe's EV markets. </p><p>Bloomberg reported Tuesday that <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-stock-price-slides-production-cut-reports-shanghai-factory-musk-2022-12">Tesla planned to scale back production of its popular Model Y</a> car by 20% at its Shanghai factory, one of its largest sites. A Tesla representative said the report was "untrue." Regardless, UBS and Deutsche Bank analysts have said an output-cutting measure is a good move for Tesla, as the EV-car market in China shows signs of softness.</p><p>Tesla's Shanghai factory sold 100,291 electric cars in November, setting a monthly record for the company and putting it on track to double the previous year's production of 484,130, <a href="https://english.news.cn/20221206/4c6f4451fd5e470aa44fe86712afd19d/c.html">Xinhua</a>, China's state news agency, reported. Reaching those numbers <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-cuts-dec-model-y-output-shanghai-plant-by-over-20-versus-nov-sources-2022-12-05/">required cuts of up to 9% of the</a> Model 3 and Model Y sale prices, Reuters reported. </p><p>But Tesla didn't sell the most electric vehicles to Chinese customers in November. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/byd-auto-car-china-tesla-rival-electric-sales-stock-2022-12">BYD, a Chinese automaker</a> and <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/global-ev-sales-q3-2022/">global EV market leader backed</a> by Berkshire Hathaway, did, selling <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-sold-100291-china-made-vehicles-nov-xinhua-2022-12-05/">229,942 EVs</a>, or more than double what Tesla sold.</p><p>To boost December sales and clear inventory, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3202423/tesla-offers-us859-discount-chinese-buyers-drum-sales-amid-slowing-economy">Tesla's China operations cut its prices again</a>, despite announcing on its WeChat page that it wouldn't offer discounts again in 2023.</p><p>Patrick Hummel, the global head of autos at UBS, thinks more promotional sales will come. He wrote in a report Tuesday: "Further pricing action to stimulate more demand and or gain market share cannot be ruled out."</p><p>Emmanuel Rosner, the lead auto and auto-technology analyst at Deutsche Bank, said in his report: "It makes sense for Tesla to be prudent on production as local demand is generally under pressure." </p><p>Tesla's inventory woes seem to be a result of China's slowing economic growth. Continuous COVID-19 lockdowns and inflation are taking their toll on the pockets of Chinese consumers. The <a href="http://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202212/t20221205_1890803.html">National Bureau of Statistics of China's purchasing managers index</a> for November dropped below 50% to 48%, indicating a recession. </p><p>Rosner also wrote in his report that China's cash subsidy for EVs helped boost industry sales, but it will expire before the new year. If the government chooses not to extend the subsidy, that will additionally weaken demand for Tesla's Shanghai inventory.</p><h2>Strong competition in China and Europe</h2><p>Musk's auto company faces similar battles in Europe, the second-biggest EV market, behind China. </p><p>An October Counterpoint report found that Tesla's second quarter sales fell over 50% from the year before. A significant factor was its pandemic-induced supply-chain issues in China.</p><p>While Tesla opened a factory in Berlin to meet rising demand from European consumers, it just opened in March, and a significant portion of its inventory is imported from China. And while Tesla's Model Y was Europe's second-best-selling EV, it came in a distant second earlier this year to the Italian automotive manufacturer Fiat's Fiat 500e model.</p><p>Globally, Tesla's Model Y led the market last quarter, making up 7.5% of EV sales, Counterpoint reported. Models from Volkswagen, BYD, and the joint venture SAIC-GM-Wuling also made it into the top 10.</p><h2>Tesla leads the US — but for how long?</h2><p>That Tesla can have the world's most popular EV model, in the Model Y, and still lose in overall sales indicates a weakness in Tesla's relatively slim lineup, with just four models for sale. Competitors like Volkswagen, Ford, and General Motors all either offer or plan to offer a wider variety of vehicles at several price points and for various use cases, while Tesla's next addition to its lineup, the Cybertruck, has been delayed multiple times, and the Roadster is even further out.</p><p>Competition is chipping away at Tesla's market share in the US, too. Tesla still dominates the country with a <a href="https://b2b.kbb.com/news/view/electrified-vehicle-sales-hit-record-in-q3-2022/">64% market share</a>. But that percentage was <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/29/teslas-dominance-of-evs-is-eroding-as-cheaper-cars-hit-the-market.html#:~:text=The%20data%20firm%20found%20that,year%20and%2079%25%20in%202020.">71% in 2021 and 79% in 2020</a>. For now, traditional automakers like Ford and Chevrolet are gaining traction as more affordable alternatives to Tesla.</p><p><a href="https://www.spglobal.com/mobility/en/research-analysis/new-ev-entries-nibbling-away-at-tesla-ev-share.html">S&amp;P Global Mobility</a> predicts Tesla's market share will drop to 20% by 2025.  Stephanie Brinley, an associate director of S&amp;P Global Mobility's AutoIntelligence, said in a statement that Tesla's brand and unit sales would continue to thrive, while competitors were "bound by production capacity."</p><p>Chinese EVs won't, for the moment, be a major part of the US market. Hummel said the US's Inflation Reduction Act, which includes tax credits for locally made EVs and discriminates against EVs with parts from a foreign entity of concern, "put some soft roadblocks for Chinese players." BYD <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-12-07/byd-mulls-us-battery-plant-refrains-from-selling-evs-post-ira?leadSource=uverify%20wall">told Bloomberg</a> it was considering establishing a battery plant in the US but wouldn't sell any cars because of the legislation.</p><p>Like the rest of the world, the US is facing a recession. Between high inflation and the possibility of job cuts and shrinking buying power, a new car may be a stretch for many consumers.</p><p>To be clear, Tesla will continue to sell many electric cars in the US — it's just that many other automakers will too. And in the US, Tesla has enjoyed a long period with almost no competition.</p><p>China and Europe show how Tesla will be forced to compete on pricing, features, and build quality to win over American customers. The next five years for Tesla will likely be much harder fought than its previous five years.</p>

Tesla's struggles in China and Europe may be a preview of the pain coming for Elon in the US

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The 2022 New York auto show is packed with interesting <keyword id="11897958" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword>. </li><li>Some models go on sale soon, while others are only in concept form. </li></ul><h2><strong>Chevrolet Silverado EV</strong></h2><h2><strong style="font-size: 15px; color: #222222;"><div type="image" title="The Chevrolet Silverado EV." height="1667" width="2500" msid="90943579" hostid="261"></div></strong></h2><p>Chevrolet <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-chevy-silverado-ev-price-range-release-date-ford-f150-2022-1">debuted its electric Silverado pickup</a> at CES in January and aims to start selling it in 2023. The truck starts at $39,900 for the most basic Work Truck model. The RST First Edition, which hits the market later in 2023, starts at $105,000. </p><div type="image" title="The Chevrolet Silverado EV." height="1875" width="2500" msid="90943580" hostid="261"></div><p>The star of the show was the Silverado EV's ingenious bed, which features a large pass-through to the cab, allowing people to haul objects that are almost 11 feet long. </p><h2><strong>Deus Vayanne</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Deus Vayanne." height="1640" width="2187" msid="90943582" hostid="261"></div><p>Austria-based EV startup Deus debuted a "production-oriented concept" of its inaugural model, the Vayanne. The company claims its supercar will put out a positively outrageous 2,200 horsepower and 1,475 pound-feet of torque. For comparison, the $3.3 million Bugatti Chiron <em>only </em>offers 1,500 horses or so. </p><div type="image" title="The Deus Vayanne." height="1875" width="2500" msid="90943584" hostid="261"></div><p>The Vayanne, according to Deus, will have a top speed of 248 mph and can hit 60 mph in less than two seconds. </p><p>Impossibly low to the ground and sculpted, the Vayanne also looks the part. Deus says its rear is inspired by the infinity symbol. The Deus Vayanne is limited to 99 examples, and deliveries are set to begin in 2025. </p><h2><strong>Kia EV9 concept</strong></h2><div type="image" title="The Kia EV9." height="1370" width="1827" msid="90943585" hostid="261"></div><p>Kia took the opportunity to show off its EV9 concept, which previews a large SUV to slot above the compact <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kia-ev6-electric-suv-battery-pack-cooking-2022-4">EV6</a>. Boxy and imposing, the EV9 concept looks like a futuristic take on Kia's popular Telluride SUV. </p><p>Kia says the EV9 will have more than 300 miles of range when it hits US dealerships in 2023. We hope the SUV looks a lot like this concept when it comes to life, but some of the EV9's most interesting design elements — like its suicide doors — probably won't make it into production. </p><h2><strong>Indi One</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Indi EV Indi One" height="1571" width="2095" msid="90943586" hostid="261"></div><p>You'd be forgiven for not being aware of Indi EV, given the sheer number of electric-vehicle startups trying to make a name for themselves at this very moment. </p><p>Los Angeles-based Indi was founded in 2017 and kicked off preorders for its first model, an SUV called the Indi One, at the auto show. Here's how Indi is different from other upstarts: It included a powerful computer in the Indi One that it calls the "Vehicle Integrated Computer." </p><div type="image" title="Indi EV Indi One." height="1667" width="2500" msid="90943587" hostid="261"></div><p>This, Indi says, will allow people to play video games, make video calls for work, use social media, and do other things normally reserved for a regular computer. Indi says pricing starts at $45,000, and deliveries will start next year. </p><h2><strong>Vinfast VF8 and VF9</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Vinfast VF8." height="1667" width="2500" msid="90943588" hostid="261"></div><p>Vietnamese carmaker Vinfast showed off two electric models that are heading to the US this year: the VF8 midsize SUV and VF9 full-size SUV. Despite coming from a company — and a country — that's never sold cars of any kind stateside, they blend right in with the electric and gas SUVs on the market.</p><div type="image" title="The Vinfast VF9." height="1688" width="2500" msid="90943590" hostid="261"></div><p>It'll undoubtedly be difficult for a new brand to break into the American market. But the large VF9 hits a segment that has barely any electric options at the moment. There are several compact and medium-sized electric SUVs to choose from, but only a couple with a third row like the VF9. </p><p>To keep costs down, Vinfast is having customers lease their batteries for a monthly fee. The company guarantees it will replace a vehicle's battery if its capacity drops below 70%.</p><h2><strong>Volkswagen ID.Buzz</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="The Volkswagen ID.Buzz." height="1459" width="1946" msid="90943591" hostid="261"></div><p>The Volkswagen ID.Buzz doesn't arrive on US shores until 2024, but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-id-buzz-volkswagen-electric-bus-minivan-2024-interior-2022-4">we got an early glimpse</a> at the funky minivan in New York. And we can report that it looks great in person. It's weird in all the right ways and just puts a smile on your face. </p><div type="image" title="The Volkswagen ID.Buzz." height="1667" width="2500" msid="90943594" hostid="261"></div><p>The ID.Buzz on display was the European model. For the US, VW will stretch the van slightly to make room for third-row seating. Today, range anxiety — the fear of running out of energy before making it to a charging station — ranks among <a href="https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2021-us-electric-vehicle-experience-evx-ownership-study#:~:text=It%E2%80%99s%20mostly%20about%20range%3A%20When%20deciding%20which%20electric%20vehicle%20to%20buy%2C%20the%20most%2Doften%2Dcited%20factor%20in%20the%20purchase%20decision%20is%20battery%20and%20driving%20range.%20Even%20after%20the%20purchase%20is%20made%2C%20range%20is%20still%20a%20critical%20element%20of%20the%20ownership%20experience.">the biggest concerns</a> for existing and would-be electric-car owners. </p><p>With this latest trip, Mercedes-Benz handily beat every electric vehicle on sale today. Tesla's longest-range vehicle, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cost-breakdown-buying-guide-2021-3">the Model S</a>, can travel a bit over 400 miles per charge, The Environmental Protection Agency estimates. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-startup-lucid-froze-assembly-line-early-june-production-challenges-2022-6">Lucid Motors</a>, a new startup, sells a $169,000 sedan that's rated to travel 520 miles between stops, making it the rangiest vehicle on the market. </p><div type="image" title="The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX." height="1666" width="2500" msid="92457813" hostid="261" sizebytes="196226"></div><p>Moreover, Mercedes said it had the air conditioner running for about eight hours of the 14.5-hour drive. That's mighty impressive, given that A/C can be a big drain on an EV's battery pack. </p><p>Mercedes doesn't plan to actually sell the EQXX. Rather, it's a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mercedes-benz-electric-car-eqxx-620-mile-range-screen-tesla-2022-1">hyper-efficient research vehicle</a> the German carmaker built to test new technology and explore the limits of EV range. </p><div type="image" title="The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX." height="1666" width="2500" msid="92457817" hostid="261" sizebytes="70316"></div><p>To optimize efficiency, Mercedes made the EQXX as lightweight and aerodynamic as possible, as weight and air resistance are two of range's biggest enemies. It's 100 kWh, about the same capacity as what's in the company's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mercedes-benz-unveils-luxurious-eqs-electric-suv-to-rival-tesla-2022-4">EQS luxury sedan</a>. But Mercedes managed to make the EQXX's battery take up half as much room and weigh 30% less. </p><p>The world probably doesn't need 750-mile <keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-cars" source="Orion">electric cars</keyword> as much as it needs <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-charging-reliability-broken-stations-ev-2022-5">better and more abundant EV chargers</a>. Let's face it: While a super-advanced vehicle might be able to drive for 14 hours without a break, we human beings can't.  Regardless, Mercedes has accomplished quite the feat. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12419286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lincoln" source="Orion">Lincoln</keyword> unveiled a concept SUV that signals the design direction for its future electric cars. </li><li>The brand plans to release four battery-powered models by 2026. </li></ul><p>Like lots of car companies, Lincoln is eyeing an electric future. <keyword id="6355174" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ford" source="Orion">Ford</keyword>'s luxury brand said on Wednesday that it plans to launch four battery-powered models by 2026. </p><p>And as a preview of what's to come, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lincolns-chief-on-brand-surviving-2020-plans-expand-in-2021-2021-1">Lincoln</a> <a href="https://media.lincoln.com/content/lincolnmedia/lna/us/en/news/2022/04/20/global-debut-lincoln-star-concept.html">unveiled</a> a concept SUV called the Star. The super-futuristic vehicle won't make it to production, but it's packed with interesting features and sure is nice to stare at. Lincoln says it designed the Star to be "the ultimate sanctuary" for customers.</p><div type="image" title="The Lincoln Star concept SUV." height="1407" width="2500" msid="91013972" hostid="261"></div><p>The Star has a sleek, swept-back silhouette and an illuminated Lincoln badge up front that's surrounded by a constellation of little badge shapes. Overall, the Star looks more like something out of a cutting-edge startup than a century-old car company. </p><div type="image" title="The Lincoln Star concept SUV." height="1250" width="2500" msid="91013973" hostid="261"></div><p>Imagined for a future of autonomous vehicles, the Star is intended to be more of a lounge on wheels than a vehicle you actually have to think about driving. As such, passenger comfort is the SUV's top concern. The front seats swivel around to face backward, and the steering wheel stows away when it isn't needed. </p><div type="image" title="The Lincoln Star concept SUV." height="1407" width="2500" msid="91013974" hostid="261"></div><p>Everybody gets a wide, reclined seat with a leg rest. A refrigerated glass case between the rear seats keeps your sparkling wine cold. And drawers built into the leg rests are meant to hold passengers' slippers. The SUV's front trunk — possible without a bulky engine taking up space — acts like a giant drawer that pulls out. As <keyword id="11897958" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword> grow in popularity, a solid stable of battery-powered options could help Lincoln recapture some of its former glory. It plans for at least 50% of its sales to be electric by 2025. </p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Scott Olson / Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The major carmakers on Tuesday are reporting their sales performance in September. </p><p>Analysts forecast that sales rose at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 17.15 million, according to Bloomberg.</p><p>Here's the latest: </p><ul><li>Ford: <strong>8.9%</strong> (2.3% expected)</li><li>Fiat Chrysler: <strong>-9.7%</strong> (-13% expected)</li><li>Toyota: <strong>14.9%</strong></li></ul><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-auto-sales-ford-gm-fiat-chrysler-august-2017-9">Sales rose less than forecast</a> last month as Hurricane Harvey slowed activity in the areas that were affected. But they'd already been weak during 2017 after setting records in the previous seven years.  </p><p>Analysts, however, see some improvement as the year winds down. For one, several cars that were salvaged by the hurricanes will be replaced, and that should boost sales numbers after the initial slowdown. </p><p> </p><p>"We don't buy the idea that the vehicles sales would have kept falling absent the likely post-hurricane rebound," Pantheon Macroeconomics said in a preview. In July, all the Big Three carmakers reported <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-auto-sales-july-2017-8">sales declines</a> that were worse than expected. </p><p>Many automakers have pared down their less profitable sales to rental fleets, and this has subtracted from overall sales this year. Evercore said in a note that August <span>is typically a strong month for fleet sales, and so there could be an upturn in the numbers. </span></p><p><span>Also, the more profitable SUVs and trucks are outselling sedans, which have lower margins, suggesting that a shift in consumer preferences might be underway. </span></p><p><span>"The big question for August will be the impact from Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey," said Evercore's Arndt Ellinghorst in a preview. "We believe the drag from Harvey is likely in excess of c100k units and could be as high as c200k units on this month's print. The company said <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-stock-price-jumps-after-record-breaking-deliveries-in-q1-2021-4-1030273726">it delivered 184,800 vehicles in the quarter,</a> representing a new record. Most of those deliveries consisted of the Model 3 and Model Y, rather than the higher-priced Model S and Model X. </p><p>The average analyst estimate for Tesla's upcoming earnings report includes revenue of $10.3 billion and earnings per share of $0.79, according to data from Yahoo Finance.</p><p>As a whole, Wall Street remains skeptical on Tesla despite its ramping up of vehicle production over the past year. The company currently has only four buy ratings, eight hold ratings, and seven sell ratings among analysts.</p><p>Detailed below is what four Wall Street analysts expect from Tesla's first-quarter earnings report.</p><h3><strong>JPMorgan: 'Remain cautious on lofty valuation'</strong></h3><p>Tesla's strong first quarter deliveries already spurred <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/jpm-stock">JPMorgan</a> to increase its earnings estimates for the company earlier this month. But the bank remains cautious on Tesla, assigning the company an Underweight rating and price target of $155, representing downside potential of 78% from Friday's close.</p><p>"While our blended price target of $155 implies -79% downside, we do not regard it as ungenerous as it actually values Tesla as the world's second largest automaker by market capitalization, behind Toyota and roughly tied with Volkswagen despite the automakers each currently selling on the order of magnitude of 15-20x as many vehicles annually as Tesla," JPMorgan said.</p><p>"Tesla's current valuation appears to us to insufficiently incorporate what is likely to be greatly intensified competition in the market for battery electric vehicles and leaves little room for less than perfect execution," JPMorgan concluded.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-earnings-trades-5-top-options-profit-reopening-jpmorgan-2021-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">JPMorgan's quant guru shares his top 5 trades to profit from the busiest 2 weeks of a promising earnings season</a></em></p><h3><strong>Credit Suisse: 'Upside likely from regulatory credits'</strong></h3><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/cs-stock">Credit Suisse</a> is ahead of consensus expectations for Tesla's first-quarter earnings report, and sees three key themes that investors will focus on.</p><p>"Launch of new capacity remains most critical, especially in Europe," Credit Suisse said, adding that Tesla's Berlin factory is of highest priority as it enables Tesla to capitalize on the electric vehicle opportunity in Europe. </p><p>"1Q delivery beat reinforces upside on 2021 deliveries," Credit Suisse said. The bank expects Tesla to deliver 929,000 vehicles in 2021, well ahead of consensus estimates of 831,000. "We expect benefit from continued ramp of China production, industry strength in US and China, and as the launch of the Berlin and Austin facilities in 2H21," Credit Suisse said.</p><p>"Gross margin could see little upside, but investors would look past any softness," the bank said, adding that volume strength in the quarter will likely be offset by cost inefficiencies, a negative mix of model sales, and a reduction in vehicle prices.</p><p>Credit Suisse maintains a Neutral rating for Tesla and a price target of $800.</p><h3><strong>Wedbush: 'Expecting good news from Musk and Co.'</strong></h3><p>Wedbush analyst Dan Ives thinks Tesla will easily be able to beat Wall Street estimates for its first-quarter earnings given the company's strong Q1 deliveries "and tight expense controls seen in Fremont."</p><p>"The street is now laser focused on gauging the annual delivery trajectory for 2021... which we expect to drive the stock much higher over the coming months," Ives said. </p><p>"We now believe Tesla could exceed 850,000 deliveries for the year with 900,000 as a stretch goal, despite the chip shortage and various supply chain issues lingering across the auto sector," Wedbush said.</p><p>"We believe the tide is turning on the Street and the 'eye popping' delivery numbers coming out of China cannot be ignored with the trajectory on pace to represent ~40% of deliveries for Musk &amp; Co. by 2022," Ives concluded.</p><p>Wedbush maintains an Outperform rating for Tesla and a price target of $1,000. </p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-picks-buy-amid-us-economic-deceleration-global-boom-gs-2021-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GOLDMAN SACHS: Buy these 45 'global-facing' stocks set to benefit from the worldwide growth boom as the pace in the US begins to slow</a></em></p><h3><strong>RBC: 'We expect some supply chain issues'</strong></h3><p>RBC tweaked its first-quarter earnings estimates for Tesla following the release of its delivery figures earlier this month. RBC expects $10.5 billion in revenue for the quarter, which is lower than its previous estimate due to lower deliveries of the Model S and X, which command higher prices and profit margins. </p><p>RBC's estimates include $400 million in regulatory credits, which Tesla sells to other automakers that don't produce enough electric vehicles based on government mandates.</p><p>"On the call, we believe the items that will be in focus are auto-gross margins, free cash flow, capacity expansion updates, product updates and commentary about the impact of the semi-shortage to 2021 deliveries," RBC said. </p><p>The firm lowered its 2021 delivery estimates to 825,000 from 860,000, "given we expect some supply chain issues," RBC said. RBC maintains a Sector Perform rating for Tesla and a price target of $725. </p>

The company said during its sales call with analysts that it would be "really tough" to match the performance of last year. </p><p>Those comments were accompanied by other concerns about carmakers spending more on the incentives that attract prospective buyers. This usually happens when the market has peaked and companies are trying to guard their market share from competitors. </p><p>However, the mix of spending on incentives reveals that higher spending may not be all that hurtful to carmakers' bottomlines, as Business Insider's Matthew DeBord <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-auto-sales-september-expectations-2016-9">noted</a> in his preview. </p><p>Car companies are selling lots of trucks and SUVs, which are more expensive than sedans. That makes the discounting relative, since offering incentives on an expensive SUV is less desperate than discounting cheaper cars. </p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-delivers-24500-vehicles-in-the-third-quarter-2016-10">Tesla</a> on Sunday said it delivered 24,500 vehicles in the third quarter, indicating that the company is <span> running slightly below pace for the 50,000 second-half number it set for itself. <p>Throughout Tuesday, the big carmakers will be reporting their US sales numbers for February. </p><p>Analysts forecast that auto sales rose at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 17.70 million, up from 17.46 million in January, according to Bloomberg.</p><p>The year kicked off with sales growing at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-auto-sales-january-2016-2">fastest pace since 2000</a>. And so this forecast increase would maintain a solid couple of months for car sales, following the post-recession high that was recorded last year.</p><p>In a note to clients previewing the data, Deutsche Bank economists described this report as among their top five indicators. That's because vehicles are big-ticket items, so they are typically bought when households are confident about their income prospects. Bookings sank 60% year-over-year in early July amid continued quarantines and a resurgence in virus cases. Even if ride count recovered through the month, the analysts see ride pricing as a second headwind against the segment. Prices in key <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword> are down as much as 15% year-over-year, according to Bank of America, creating a new pressure even as bookings recover.</p><p>Demand for Uber Eats and the company's market share growth will impress but ultimately fail to drive an <keyword id="6357061" type="SPONSORED" weightage="60" keywordseo="earnings">earnings</keyword> win, the team said. Bank of America credit and debit card data shows online restaurant spending up 124% year-over-year through the quarter and up 139% in July alone.</p><p>The analysts see Uber Eats outpacing main rival GrubHub and possibly snagging a greater share of the food delivery market. The Postmates deal will only further help Uber outperform through the pandemic, the bank added.</p><p>"Near-term, biggest positives are Eats demand uptick and share gains and potential that ridesharing is preferred over public <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> for commuters when US starts to reopen," the analysts wrote.</p><p>Bank of America expects Uber to miss the consensus analyst estimate for quarterly revenue and losses. Stay-at-home activity remains a massive drag on Uber's rideshare unit, the analysts said, adding the second quarter will mark a trough for the business.</p><p>It's "a long road ahead" for the gig economy, the team wrote, but "the overall environment is starting to improve" for giants like Uber.</p><p>The report won't be all doom and gloom, according to Wedbush. The firm is bullish on Uber's Eats business and expects it to double in size through the second quarter. Its Eats business is performing "extremely well" amid the economic downturn, and trends driving its success are likely sustainable, according to the bank.</p><p>Still, the team matched the aforementioned firms' calls for a below-par quarter. Uber's rideshare unit "continues to recover slowly" and push profitability targets several quarters into the future.</p><p>"We believe that after weeks of rideshare volume improvements into early June, recovery has slowed, stalled, or reversed in some cities," the analysts said.</p><p>The firm sees Uber barely beating estimates for quarterly revenue and losses as Eats' success outweighs rideshare's sluggish rebound. The company "has done a good job at staying in front of investors," and that communication may blunt a disappointing quarter, they added</p><p>Canaccord Genuity sees a slump in rideshare activity offsetting Eats growth by a sizeable margin. Second-quarter revenue will land "modestly below consensus" and losses will similarly miss estimates, according to the firm.</p><p>Investors should watch out for any updates to the virus' impact on rideshare and Eats growth, as well as rideshare trends in the recovering Asian and European markets, the team wrote.
