Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

Indian auto retail sector records 27% YoY growth in April: FADA

The report highlighted a 7.01% month-on-month (MoM) decline in overall retail auto sales, falling from 20.34 lakh units in July to 18.91 lakh units in August. Despite this monthly decline in sales, the auto sector witnessed a modest 2.88% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to August 2023. "India saw 15.9% <keyword id="22508938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="excess-rainfall" source="keywords">excess rainfall</keyword>, with a significant surplus in key regions, disrupting auto retail performance," said a report by FADA. <h2>Decline in sales</h2>The report added that the two-wheeler (2W) segment, despite showing a 6.28% year-on-year growth, registered a 7.29% month-on-month decline. As per the report, market saturation and weather disruptions were the key factors behind the decline in two-wheeler sales. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113016216" title="August auto sales – Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and others report a decline in sales" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> In the passenger vehicle (PV) segment, there was a 4.53% YoY and 3.46% MoM decline, while the commercial vehicle (CV) segment recorded an 8.5% MoM and 6.05% YoY decline. FADA noted that weak industrial demand and weather-related challenges were major contributors to the significant drop in commercial vehicle sales. <h2>Inventory levels continue to be a challenge</h2>FADA also highlighted growing inventory challenges in the PV segment, with stock days ranging between 70-75 days, representing approximately 7.8 lakh vehicles valued at ₹77,800 crore. The report noted that these high inventory levels, combined with aggressive OEM dispatches have created cash flow pressures for dealers, impacting their profitability. "Dealers under pressure due to aggressive OEM dispatches, with dealers facing cash flow challenges and reduced profitability" the report said. <h2>FADA urges banks to tighten funding</h2>To address this, FADA has urged banks and NBFCs to tighten funding for dealers with excessive inventory. Additionally, the report emphasized the need for dealers and OEMs to recalibrate their supply strategies to avoid a potential inventory crisis. For the upcoming months, the report paints an optimistic picture with the festive season offering growth opportunities. FADA urges banks to tighten funding to dealers as rains play spoilsport in August

The surge is attributed to solid retail demand, estimated at approximately 15 per cent y/y, strategic inventory build-up, and a favourable base effect. In the passenger vehicle (PV) segment, volumes are also expected to see an uptick, largely due to better retail performance and inventory accumulation. The report predicts a slight growth of around 3 per cent y/y for PV volumes. On the commercial vehicles (CV) front, the outlook is more mixed. The report forecasts that overall CV volumes will remain relatively flat, with a small drop of approximately 3 per cent y/y, primarily due to lower light commercial vehicle (LCV) volumes. However, there are bright spots within the segment. Volumes for VECV's CVs are expected to have risen by 15 per cent, and the medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&amp;H CV) growth forecast has been revised upwards to high single digits from mid-single digits, driven by robust demand for buses and ongoing replacement demand. The M&amp;H CV segment is further bolstered by increased infrastructure and economic activity, as well as a favourable comparison base from Q1 and Q4 of FY24.

<ul><li>The hospitality sector saw 23 <keyword id="142429" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-rating" source="Orion">credit rating</keyword> upgrades, with no downgrades at all in FY24, says ICRA.</li><li>Auto, financial sector, power, realty and transport infrastructure also saw several upgrades.</li><li>Agriculture, chemicals, construction and apparel sectors saw the most downgrades. </li></ul> The fiscal year of FY24 continued the ‘upgrade momentum’ that was set into motion in FY22, said the credit rating agency ICRA. Two entities had been upgraded for every entity downgraded during the year, the rating agency said in a report released on Monday. The biggest winner for the year is the hospitality sector — with 23 upgrades and an upgrade rate of 37%. And, there were no downgrades at all. ICRA maintains a positive outlook on the Hospitality sector for FY2025 as well. The other sectors which saw the most number of upgrades include auto and auto components, finance, power, realty and transport infrastructure. On the other hand, sectors which saw the most number of downgrades are — agricultural food and other products, chemicals and petrochemicals, construction, textiles and apparel. Company-specific factors While entities in aviation, hospitality, auto &amp; auto components, and banks gained from the industry tailwinds in FY24 – that’s not the only factor behind most upgrades. “A large majority of rating upgrades were driven by company-specific factors such as expansion in market share or order book, improvement in the cost structure, reduction in project risk, or fresh equity infusion that strengthened the balance sheet,” says K Ravichandran, chief rating officer at ICRA said. Overall, credit profiles continued to improve last year. The number of instances of defaults dipped to five in FY24, compared with 22 in FY23 and 42 in FY22. “Corporate India has shown a high resilience to withstanding the rise in borrowing costs over the past two years and is seen to have the capacity to bear the current level of interest rates before the rate cut cycle likely begins in the latter part of the year,” said Ravichandran. Banks &amp; NBFC asset profiles at decadal best The financial sector has also been one of the best-performing sectors for the year in terms of credit profile. It saw an upgrade rate of 13%, next only to auto. Its downgrade ratio is also low at 2%. “The asset quality of banks and NBFCs has also been at its decadal best with the profitability and the capitalisation indicators expected to remain healthy in the near term. The series of proactive actions taken by the regulators (RBI and SEBI) in recent years would work to further strengthen the financial system and the capital markets,” opines Ravichandran. He, however, added that the key downside factors that could derail progress in multiple sectors are the monsoons and complicated geopolitical landscape. Two wars, the Red Sea crisis and sluggish exports had been weighing on India in FY24. “Yet, these did not feel heavier as domestic consumption demand across several sectors, government spending on public infrastructure, and healthy balance sheets lent support to the credit profiles of entities,” says ICRA. In FY25, the rating agency expects India’s GDP to expand by 6.5%, with the average retail inflation estimated to be moderate at 4.6%.

Investments in gold ETFs (exchange traded funds) grew by a whopping 472% at ₹841 crore in October compared to ₹147 crore in the same period last year. Pradeepkumar, CEO, Union Mutual Fund, says: “If one takes into account the allocations to mid and small caps in categories such as multicap, flexicap and large &amp; mid Cap, it appears that anywhere from 40% to 50% of the total net flows could have gone to mid and small-cap stocks. While the long-term outlook for these companies is positive, investors should remain cautious about the possibility of short-term market volatility and consider a staggered approach to their investments.” It is not just betting on smaller stocks that will lead to higher value creation that shows that the Indian retail investor has evolved. Analysis shows that the pace of redemptions slowed down to Rs 26,000 crore (down 14.8% month-on-month). Consequently, net inflows accelerated to ₹22,000 crore in October from ₹15,500 crore in September 2023. Financialisation of savings is a big trend that has been playing out since 2016 in India. The retail investor’s faith in the India story has not faded despite the headwinds. Explains Ashwini Kumar, Head Market Data, ICRA Analytics, “Net inflows during the month of October 2023 have grown by a whooping 473% at ₹80,528 crore, as against ₹14,047 crore in October 2022.” The sectoral shift The story gets even more interesting when one digs deeper into the monthly flows. Net inflows into equity-oriented schemes grew by 113% at ₹19,957 crore in October, up from ₹9,390 crore in the same period last year. According to analysis done by Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFS), the month saw notable changes in the sector and stock allocation of funds. Retail investors are doubling down on automobiles, utilities, consumer and insurance sectors. On a MoM basis, the weights of all these sectors increased while that of banks (Private &amp; PSU) , technology, capital goods, and metals moderated. The weight of automobiles jumped to an almost five-year (59-month) high of 8.4% (up 10 basis points month-on-month and +70 basis point year-on-year) in October 2023. Utilities’ weight climbed for the second consecutive month to a 38-month high of 3.9% (+10bp MoM, +60bp YoY), says MOFS. The weightage for private banks moderated for the fourth consecutive month to 18.7% (-20bp MoM, flat YoY) in October 2023. PSU Banks overall weight declined to 3% (-20bp MoM, -70bp YoY) and this is the lowest since February 2021.

Treasury yields rose on the new data, with the 10-year bond yield up 12 basis points to 3.947% as investors dialed back expectations for a jumbo 50 basis point rate cut from the Fed next month. The rebound in retail and upbeat labor data follows a day after consumer inflation figures released Wednesday showed inflation cooled to 2.9% in July, its lowest level in over three years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-costs-inflation-cpi-consumer-price-index-shelter-real-estate-2024-8#:~:text=Housing%20costs%20are%20the%20big,its%20lowest%20level%20since%202021.">sticky housing inflation accounted for 90% of the rise in core CPI</a>, making it the biggest factor keeping inflation high.The inflation numbers are still above the Fed's 2% target, but steady progress is being made as it looks to cool the economy without causing a dramatic spike in the unemployment rate.
