Discovery after a merger</a>, it started development on a "Dune" prequel series focused on the politically savvy, supernaturally powered sect of women. After some staffing changes during the development process, a retitle, and a shift to air on the company's flagship cable channel HBO, we're finally left with "Dune: Prophecy."The series takes place 10,000 years before the birth of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-character-guide-houses-explained-differences-from-novel-2021-10">Paul Atreides </a>(played by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/timothee-chalamet-most-daring-red-carpet-looks-2022-6">Timothée Chalamet</a> in Villeneuve's films) and shortly after an event known as the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-prophecy-timeline-movies-butlerian-jihad-2024-11">Butlerian Jihad</a> (when humans rose up against, defeated, and ultimately banned thinking machines). It hones in on the origins of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-movie-review-denis-villeneuve-adaptation-frank-herbert-2021-10">Bene Gesserit</a>, known at the time as the Sisterhood, and the political machinations of a young Empire.If you're a true "Dune" fan who's read at least some of the franchise's auxiliary novels, this history should be vaguely familiar. "Dune: Prophecy" is partly based on Frank Herbert's seminal science fiction work and on "Sisterhood of Dune," a novel written by Herbert's son Brian Herbert and sci-fi author Kevin J. Following his death in 1986, his son Brian and Anderson began publishing "Dune" prequel novels in 1999."Sisterhood of Dune" is part of the "Great Schools of Dune" prequel series written by the two, and it was published in 2012. It's set 83 years after humanity's victory over the thinking machines, and as the title suggests, covers the early days of the Sisterhood. After Raquella Berto-Anirul survives a poisoning that unlocks her genetic memory, she becomes the first Reverend Mother. That process, dubbed the Spice Agony, killed a number of sisters who were unable to withstand the poison — but it eventually turned others into Reverend Mothers themselves.Raquella trains Valya, a daughter of the war-disgraced Harkonnen family, and lets her in on the Sisterhood's tightest-held secret: It uses computer technology to keep track of the genetic database necessary for the organization's breeding program. (As established in the "Dune" movies, the ultimate goal of that breeding program was to produce a male Reverend Mother known as the Kwisatz Haderach — but for the purposes of this show, don't worry too much about that.)The novel also features other characters including Manford Torondo, a leader in the anti-technology Butlerian movement, and Vorian Atreides, a war hero. From the royal family, there's Emperor Salvatore Corrino and his half-siblings Roderick and Anna. Valya's brother Griffin is also present, and there are mentions of her younger sister Tula, who features prominently in the show.There's another important sister in the book as well: Doretea, who succeeds in becoming the second-ever Reverend Mother after Raquella. She and Valya are at odds, however, and Doretea puts the Sisterhood's mission in jeopardy by revealing the existence of its thinking machine to the Emperor. Those characters include Desmond Hart, a soldier who comes into conflict with the Sisterhood, and royal half-siblings Ynez and Constantine Corrino.Executive producer Jordan Goldberg told Business Insider that the series was "sort of" based on the novel, and that while the team adhered to the "Dune" canon in some ways, it also attempted to "infuse some new angles" into the story."There are bits and pieces of various different characters and plot ideas that we've taken [from the book] and fused in our 30 years later story with the Emily Watson version of Valya Harkonnen," Goldberg said. "That story is sort of our invention."The good news is that there's plenty of "Dune" to go around, should HBO decide to continue the story. Brian and Anderson have written multiple novel series that tread "Dune" history both pre- and post-Paul Atreides, the hero from Frank Herbert's novels and Villeneuve's film adaptation."We would love to keep telling this story as long as they let us," Goldberg said of a potential second season. "There's so much to explore, so many angles to go. The Consulate General of India in Toronto on Thursday said it is cancelling some of its scheduled consular camps after the Canadian security authorities conveyed their inability to provide minimum security protection to its organisers. The announcement comes days after an incident of violent disruption by protestors carrying Khalistani flags at a consular event co-organised by the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton and the Indian Consulate. "In view of the security agencies conveying their inability to provide minimum security protection to the community camp organisers, the Consulate has decided to cancel some of the scheduled consular camps," the Consulate General of India said in a post on X. On November 3, the protest occurred at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton and unverified videos circulating on social media appeared to show demonstrators holding banners in support of Khalistan. The protestors clashed with people and disrupted the consular event. The incident was condemned by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who said every Canadian has the right to practise their faith freely and safely. India condemned the attack with an expectation that those indulging in violence "will be prosecuted". In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said that New Delhi remains "deeply concerned" about the safety and security of Indian nationals in Canada. The relations between India and Canada came under severe strain following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations in September last year of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing. New Delhi rejected Trudeau's charges as "absurd". India has been maintaining that the main issue between the two countries is that of Canada giving space to pro-Khalistan elements operating from Canadian soil with impunity. She has published twelve novels to date, and her 13th book, "The Striker," a sports romance about professional soccer player Asher Donovan and former professional ballerina Scarlett Dubois, hits bookshelves Tuesday.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/2024/07/05/booktok-author-sarah-j-maas-sold-more-books-this-year-than-the-top-10-new-books-combined/">Forbes</a> reported in July that Huang had sold nearly 1.5 million copies of her books in 2024 alone, making her the fourth most popular BookTok author of the year.When Huang first started releasing books in 2020, she was completely self-published, and she had her big break when "Twisted Love" blew up in 2021.For those who became familiar with her work via BookTok — where she boasts over 12.5 million likes — Huang probably seems like an overnight success story.But Huang told Business Insider that her Cinderella story took years of hard work behind the scenes, which made her more passionate about self-publishing than ever.<h2 id="29c0ae69-5350-4369-9614-d9710d9a1b76">Self-publishing for creative control</h2>Unlike many unknown authors, Huang didn't dream of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-landed-six-figure-book-deal-major-publisher-2023-7">signing with a traditional publisher</a> when her writing career began."I didn't start out thinking I would be traditionally published or even that I necessarily wanted to be traditionally published," Huang told BI. "And I think, for me, it was because I value having creative control over my work.""I like that it was so nimble," she added. It lets authors break into the industry without getting signed by a literary agent or publisher, which can be a barrier for many writers. Authors can also share their books with the world more quickly and keep more of the royalties they make on their works.The amount of money authors make self-publishing their books varies, but some writers previously told BI they <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-kindle-income-stream-how-writers-make-money-self-publishing-2021-1">make over $10,000 each month</a> just by self-publishing on Amazon.Huang started by self-publishing her works as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-original-book-business-booming-2024-6">Amazon e-books</a> and independently printed hard copies of her books for a period. According to her website, her self-published hard copies are no longer available in print.Today, Huang's books come to the world in a hybrid between self- and traditional publishing.She works with independent editors and proofreaders rather than staffers at a big publisher, and she told BI she also has "alpha readers" who read her work as she writes it. For "The Striker," she selected alpha readers with knowledge of soccer and ballet to help push the story in the right direction.Bloom Books, an imprint of the independent publisher Sourcebooks, distributes Huang's works in the US so she can reach an even wider audience. Bloom publishes other popular romance authors like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-romance-books-fiction-released-2021-3">Meghan Quinn</a> and "Fifty Shades of Grey" author E.L. James, who signed with the company in 2021, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ew.com/books/fifty-shades-el-james-launching-own-imprint/">Entertainment Weekly reported</a>.Although Huang launched her career by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-self-publish-your-own-book-from-childrens-author-2023-4">self-publishing</a>, she told BI it took years to figure out how to make it work for her.<h2 id="d2a2532a-f338-40c9-b8d8-b812cab3fdd0">Research was key</h2>"Twisted" was Huang's breakout series, but she self-published four books in her "If Love" series in 2020.Huang, who studied international relations in college, told BI she focused her marketing efforts almost entirely on social media for that series, using the professional skills she already had from a previous corporate job."I had a little bit of a leg up because I did a lot of marketing in my old day job," Huang said, adding that she also spent a lot of time running a personal travel Instagram at the time. "That was what I really leaned in on when I started marketing my book."When working on "Twisted Love," Huang wanted to invest more in her writing, so she spent time developing a business strategy."When I decided to treat this as a career, I listened to so many podcasts. I read all the books, the articles," she said. Huang also joined groups on Facebook for indie authors, learning from her peers."For like a year or two, all I did was just consume content about self-publishing," Huang said. "It really helped, and it just got to a point where I was able to know the nuances of the industry."That research led her to invest in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rise-of-sarah-j-maas-crescent-city-author-2024-2">BookTok</a>, where she grew much of her organic audience.<h2 id="3d1d2330-cf4c-4028-aadb-2941ef9444d9">BookTok made a big difference</h2>Huang became an early adopter of TikTok, joining the app in December 2020, which she says helped her develop a readership.BookTok has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-changes-book-publishing-marketing-author-careers-2023-5">drastically influenced the publishing industry</a>, changing how authors reach their audience and how publishers find writers to work with.As of Tuesday, Huang had 724,000 followers on the app."It was a lot of fun, and that was my primary marketing channel," Huang said of her experience with BookTok. "I think I was lucky because I got in so early, and it's been kind of amazing to see it soar to where it is now." "The biggest benefit is that it's great marketing, especially if you don't have a big budget, which most authors when they're starting out, or even when they're not starting out, don't have," she added.Huang said she also finds TikTok helpful for market research, though it's important not to become dependent on readers' opinions.Although TikTok sometimes seems like a place where authors achieve overnight success, Huang said that's not exactly the case."You know that saying, overnight successes are usually 10 years in the making?" she said. "You don't see all the work and time that goes on behind the scenes that leads to that moment."Huang isn't slowing down anytime soon. She will release two books next year: "The King of Envy" in March 2025 and "The Defender" in the fall.Huang told BI her fans can look forward to a darker hero in her next release."I think I am going back to my morally gray era, which I'm always excited about," she said. "Asher is such a green flag. But I'm like, 'Sometimes I need a little extra drama and suspense.'"

The chatbot could write articles, summarise books, explain difficult terms, check grammar and spelling and a lot more. In a nutshell, activities that were previously considered exclusive to human beings were being carried out by the chatbot and it had initially left people surprised. As time passed, more AI chatbots like Gemini, <keyword id="19914065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="claude" source="keywords">Claude</keyword>, MetaAI and CoPilot began emerging and people started using them for various purposes. Now, we all know that AI is trained on huge sets of data. And this data, in some cases, was copyrighted. Laws regarding <keyword id="20055202" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-companies" source="keywords">AI companies</keyword> using copyrighted data are still blurry which is why such cases always make headlines. In the last two years, AI chatbots and companies behind them have faced several legal battles over <keyword id="19971862" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="copyright-infringement" source="keywords">copyright infringement</keyword>, raising concerns about how these technologies are trained and used. From music and art to literature, content creators have increasingly accused AI firms of using their work without permission to train these systems. Let us take a look at five such cases. <h2>1. Record Labels vs. Suno and Udio AI</h2> In January 2024, the music industry’s powerhouses—Universal Music Group (UMG), Sony Music, and Warner Music Group took legal action against Suno and Udio AI, two emerging AI music companies. The record labels accused these companies of unlawfully using copyrighted music to train their AI systems. According to a report in Forbes, the crux of the lawsuit was in the claim that Suno and Udio AI used a vast amount of copyrighted sound recordings to enhance their AI's ability to generate music. According to the labels, while the AI-generated music may not directly copy the original tracks, the extensive use of copyrighted material for training purposes constitutes a violation of <keyword id="19906860" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="intellectual-property-rights" source="keywords">intellectual property rights</keyword>. The plaintiffs argued that the AI’s impressive ability to replicate musical styles and nuances was made possible by this unauthorised use of their recordings. The lawsuit sought not only financial damages but also injunctions to prevent further misuse of copyrighted music by these AI systems. <h2>2. Scarlett Johansson vs. OpenAI</h2> In May 2024, Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that her voice likeness was used without permission in an AI-generated voice model known as “Sky.” Johansson had previously declined OpenAI’s requests to use her voice for their chatbot, but the lawsuit claimed that her voice was still incorporated into the AI’s outputs. The controversy began when Johansson’s legal team argued that despite OpenAI’s denial of using her voice, there were striking similarities between her voice and the AI-generated model. OpenAI maintained that the voice used was not Johansson’s but rather that of another actor. A report by Reuters said that the artists accused the tech giant of using billions of copyrighted images to train its AI image generator, Imagen, without proper authorisation or compensation. The lawsuit contended that Google’s AI was trained on a dataset comprising copyrighted artwork, which included the plaintiffs' works. The artists argued that Google had not obtained permission to use their images and that this unauthorised use was a breach of copyright laws. On the other hand, Google denied the allegations, asserting that its models are trained on publicly available data. <h2>4. <keyword id="20097058" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="authors" source="keywords">Authors</keyword> vs. Anthropic</h2> Just last month, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Anthropic, the company behind the AI chatbot Claude. A report in The Guardian said that authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson accused Anthropic of using pirated copies of their books to train its AI model. The lawsuit alleged that Anthropic used these unauthorised copies to teach Claude how to generate text, effectively exploiting their intellectual property without permission. The authors claimed that Anthropic’s actions not only infringed on their copyrights but also caused significant harm to their creative works. The lawsuit sought monetary damages and an injunction to prevent further misuse of the authors' works in training the AI. <h2>5. Sarah Silverman and Authors vs. <keyword id="19911549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Meta" source="keywords">Meta</keyword></h2> In December 2023, comedian Sarah Silverman, alongside other notable authors like Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon, sued Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook). The lawsuit accused Meta of using pirated copies of their books to train its Llama AI language model. Despite legal warnings from its own team, Meta allegedly proceeded with using these unauthorized copies, which led to the lawsuit. The plaintiffs argued that Meta’s actions were a blatant disregard for intellectual property laws and ethical standards. They sought damages and an order to prevent Meta from using pirated content in its AI training practices.
