<ul><li><keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword>’s parent company, Alphabet, has no plans to be left behind in the race for Web3.</li><li>CEO <keyword id="164502" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sundar-pichai" source="Orion">Sundar Pichai</keyword> explained that Google’s Cloud team is looking at how new products can be deployed on block-based platforms.</li><li>Pichai’s comments come less than a month after reports of Google forming a team dedicated to blockchain and its related technologies.</li></ul>Joining the Web3 narrative alongside Facebook, tech giant Google is “definitely” looking at blockchain. And, not unlike Facebook, it’s hoping that AR will find use cases within applications like Maps, <keyword id="10879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="youtube" source="Orion">YouTube</keyword>, <keyword id="4237083" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-meet" source="Orion">Google Meet</keyword> and others.<br />  <div type="ExtQuote" text="Just one example, our Cloud team is looking at how they can support our customers’ needs in building, transacting, storing value and deploying new products on blockchain-based platforms." auname="Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai during the company’s fourth quarter earnings call"></div><br /><strong><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Google’s rumoured blockchain plans" comment="subhead" text="Google’s rumoured blockchain plans"><span data-til="noop">Google’s rumoured blockchain plans</span></cmsannotation></strong><br />In the week before the earnings call, Richard Widmann, head of strategy for digital assets at Google’s Cloud division had<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/27/google-cloud-blockchain-team-to-seek-new-business.html"> announced plans</a> to hire people with block chain expertise, “We think that if we do our jobs right, it will drive decentralization,” Widmann said at the time. <br /><br /><keyword id="691847" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-cloud" source="Orion">Google Cloud</keyword> is targeting customers beginning to adopt blockchain technologies in<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/13/google-cloud-ceo-thomas-kurian-targeting-five-industries-c-suite.html"> five target</a> areas – retail, healthcare, financial services, media and entertainment and manufacturing. Blockchain developers can already use a few tools available on the Google Cloud Marketplace.<br /><br />Last month, Google had <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2021-12-15/why-google-has-sat-on-the-web3-sidelines">reportedly</a> formed a blockchain group under Shivakumar Venkataraman to focus on “blockchain and other next-gen distributed computing and data storage technologies.”<br /><strong><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Google may be a little late to the party" comment="subhead" text="Google may be a little late to the party"><span data-til="noop">Google may be a little late to the party</span></cmsannotation></strong><br />According to<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/investment/news/facebook-microsoft-and-others-look-towards-the-1-trillion-dollar-metaverse-opportunity-but-that-contradicts-the-base-philosophy-behind-web-3-0/articleshow/87959802.cms"> data compiled by Ark Invest</a>, an investment management firm, the Web3 and the metaverse are a $1 trillion dollar opportunity, explaining the pivot by the largest tech firms. <br /><br />Jack Dorsey’s Square and Mark Zuckerberg-owned Facebook rebranded to Block and Meta, respectively. Meanwhile, Amazon had launched its<a href="https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2018/11/introducing-amazon-managed-blockchain/"> Managed Blockchain</a> service back in 2018. Even Microsoft introduced its Azure Blockchain Service in 2019 but<a href="https://blogs.gartner.com/avivah-litan/2021/05/24/microsoft-ends-azure-blockchain-service-where-is-enterprise-blockchain-heading/"> it’s another story that it had to shut it down in 2021</a>.<br /><br />However, it should be noted that backing blockchain technology and Web3 are two very different things. Sundar Pichai pegs Google’s Web3 ambitions to the cloud

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Beck Diefenbach</span></p><p class="caption">Eric Schmidt</p></div><p></p></div></div>Google has led some of the biggest tech innovations, from self-driving cars to super-fast internet access.</p><p>So what are the next big things that will change the world?</p><p>Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google parent company Alphabet, just gave his short list of the biggest game-changing tech innovations he expects in the next five to ten years. </p><p>Speaking at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_mi9JnoFi4">Alphabet's annual shareholders meeting</a> on Wednesday, Schmidt stressed that these aren't necessarily things that the company is working on. But many of them are. And the ones that <em>aren't</em> provide a good window into the kind of things that one of the company's top execs is thinking about. </p><p>Here's what he highlighted: </p><h2>Fake meat </h2><p>Schmidt is excited about the potential of a great steak, grown organically.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Impossible Foods</span></p><p class="caption"> Impossible Foods cheeseburger </p></div><p></p></div></div>Right now there are a handful of startups trying create "meat" products from plants or cells grown in a lab. Including, for example, Impossible Foods, a company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pat-brown-on-why-impossible-foods-didnt-sell-to-google-2016-6">Google tried to buy last summer</a>. The cattle industry contributes substantially to global warming, so fake meat could provide a better environmental alternative. </p><p>"Even if you don't like the idea, imagine if it tastes really good," he said. </p><h2>3D-printed buildings </h2><p>3D printing has been a buzzy industry for a while now. But Schmidt is particularly excited about the potential for the technology in architecture. People are already using 3D printing to design and build structures much more quickly, Schmidt says.</p><p>"Imagine if we can get the cost of those buildings down by a factor of 3 or 4 or 5 using new materials and allow you to remodel them very quickly and things like that," he said. There are people working on this."</p><p>Maybe this technology is something that Sidewalk Labs, an Alphabet subsidiary focused on improving cities, is mulling over...</p><h2>Virtual reality  </h2><p>You can't talk about the future these days without bringing up VR and augmented reality. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Google has a bunch of projects in this area of course, including its cheap headset, Cardboard, and its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-announces-daydream-for-virtual-reality-2016-5">more advanced design, Daydream</a>. Schmidt also said that he's excited about the potential to use more augemented reality - which layers digital images over the real world - in the workplace. </p><p>"Google Glass was a first attempt at that, with much more coming," he said. </p><h2>Smartphones in the medical world </h2><p>"It's pretty clear that the mobile phone is going to be a life-saver for you, in that it's going to be your primary health monitoring device," Schmidt said. </p><p>Google's biotech arm, Verily, is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-verily-connectivity-bridge-2016-3">actively working on ways to get smartphones and smartphone accessories </a>into hospitals. Apple, too, is expanding its<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-hiring-hipaa-specialist-2016-5"> healthcare-related focus. </a></p><h2>Self-driving cars</h2><p>More than 30,000 people in the United States die in car crashes every year.
