EV manufacturer <keyword id="2622993" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ather-energy" source="Orion">Ather Energy</keyword> on Monday announced it has commissioned second manufacturing facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, to cater to the growing demand of its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/ola-electric-scooter-test-rides-begin-in-delhi-bengaluru-ahmedabad-and-kolkata/articleshow/87625927.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">electric scooters</a> in the country. The company aims to manufacture 400,000 units per annum of its 450X and 450 Plus e-scooters -- a significant jump from its current capacity of 120,000 units. Apart from the EV manufacturing, the facility will also focus on lithium-ion battery manufacturing. Ather Energy had set up its first manufacturing facility at Hosur earlier this year. "Within just 10 months of opening our current facility, we find ourselves already operating at full capacity. We are commissioning the second plant to be ready for 2022. With this capacity expansion, Ather is well on its way to becoming the country's largest EV producer by next year," said Tarun Mehta, Co-Founder and CEO, Ather Energy. In October, Ather Energy reported 12-fold growth over last year with a revenue run rate of $100 million. The EV maker said it has been registering 20 per cent month-on-month sales growth since November last year. The Hosur manufacturing facility enables 90 per cent of the manufacturing of 450X and 450 Plus e-scooters, including the battery pack, which is made in-house. The company has committed to invest Rs 650 crore in the next five years to enhance operational efficiency and production capacity to meet the exponential surge in demand. Ather Energy said it also plans to expand to around 150 experience centres in 100 cities by March 2023.

This time he has returned as an investor on Bengaluru-based <keyword id="599176" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Electric-Bike">electric bike</keyword> startup Ather Energy. As an angel investor, Bansal had earlier invested $0.5 million in the startup way back in 2014. Ather Energy has raised $51 million in its latest round of funding which was led by Bansal. The electric bike startup had earlier raised funding from Hero MotoCorp and Innoven Capital. The startup had made news for being one of India’s first startups to start manufacturing electric vehicles. In June 2018, the startup’s first bike Ather 450 hit the market. According to the company’s official statement, Ather is now entering an aggressive expansion phase, with the opening of pre-orders in Chennai in the coming weeks, and eventually scaling to 30 cities by the end of 2023. The company is also planning to build a new manufacturing facility which will produce one million vehicles a year. Ather Energy will also set up 6500 Ather Grid fast charging points across the country over the next 5 years with a projected investment of ₹130 crores. “The traditional auto industry is up for a redefinition. Watching Ather closely since my early investment in 2014, I am convinced that the ecosystem that Ather is building with their products is the future of urban mobility. Their focus on end to end customer experience will open up new revenue opportunities and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in India,” said Sachin Bansal in a statement. Although Ather Energy’s bikes are at a higher price point, with a starting range of ₹1,13,000, they have managed to gain popularity in Bengaluru. Electric two-wheeler maker <keyword id="19938729" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ather-Energy" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ather Energy" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ather Energy">Ather Energy</keyword> on Wednesday said it has collaborated with <keyword id="19902762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Google" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Google">Google</keyword> to give real-time availability information on two-wheeler <keyword id="22949804" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fast-charging-stations" source="keywords">fast charging stations</keyword> to <keyword id="21361710" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EV-users" source="keywords">EV users</keyword>. The collaboration will allow EV users with the Light Electric Combined Charging System - <keyword id="22949805" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LECCS" source="keywords">LECCS</keyword>, the official Indian EV charging connector standard, on their two-wheelers to find '<keyword id="22949806" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ather-Grid" source="keywords">Ather Grid</keyword>' fast chargers on Google with complete live status updates of the chargers, the company said in a statement. Chargers with LECCS will appear when searching for 'EV charger near me' or '<keyword id="20593483" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="charging-stations" source="keywords">charging stations</keyword>" on <keyword id="19895625" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-maps" source="keywords">Google Maps</keyword> and whenever a new charger is installed, it will also be listed on Google Maps, it added. Ather Grid's fast-charging network for electric two-wheelers is based on the indigenously developed LECCS, which is approved for nation-wide adoption by the Bureau of Indian Standards, Ather Energy said. The new standard was launched last year in a significant move towards building a universal standard through interoperability, thus paving the way for wider adoption of <keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="keywords">electric vehicles</keyword> in the country. As of March 30, 2024, 1,973 fast chargers are already available to the public, Ather Energy said.

Once a start-up itself, e-tailer giant Flipkart is now providing sufficient funding to new start-ups to help them realize their entrepreneurial dreams. Founders Sachin and <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binny-Bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> have extended a funding of $1 million to <keyword id="2622993" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ather-Energy">Ather Energy</keyword>, an electric two-wheeler start-up attempting to gain a foothold in the country. 
 
Commenting on this funding, Tarun Mehta, co-founder of Ather Energy, said, ““We are very excited about this fresh round of funding. Sachin and Binny Bansal are leaders who have put India’s e-commerce industry on the global map through disruptive use of technology. Their focus on technology and reinvention aligns with that of Team Ather. Electric vehicles are still at a very nascent stage in India and our aim is to develop and introduce efficient electric scooters which will benefit the country and help manage its resources more effectively. We are extremely confident about this product and this funding is a reinforcement of our belief.” 
 
Reiterating a similar sentiment, Sachin and Binny Bansal said, “We believe that the world is moving towards a smarter, more energy-efficient and environment-friendly approach in our daily lives. Growing Indian start-ups like Ather are using technology successfully to make a mark in this field. This is the second round of funding raised by Ather, which will be primarily utilised for the product development cycle. Earlier, the company had raised another round of capital from Aerospike and Technology Development Board, a government organisation, in February. 
 
The company (Ather) has also received investments from serial entrepreneur and CEO of Medall, Raju Venkatraman. The company was launched in January 2013 by Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain.

Raises $1 Million From Flipkart

Homegrown electric vehicle company <keyword id="2622993" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ather-energy" source="Orion">Ather Energy</keyword> on Thursday announced a new e-scooter '450S', powered by a 3 kWh battery pack, which will bring much-desired performance-centric EV mobility to more commuters in the country. Starting at Rs 1,29,999, the company will start accepting bookings for the new 450S from July onwards. "Within the category, the 450S will break new grounds and will offer first-of-its-kind tech features in the performance scooter segment, raising the bar in terms of riding pleasure and safety while still delivering on performance," <keyword id="1442828" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tarun-mehta" source="Orion">Tarun Mehta</keyword>, Co-Founder and CEO, Ather Energy, said in a statement. The 450S is expected to have an IDC (<keyword id="17580518" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-driving-conditions" source="Orion">Indian Driving Conditions</keyword>) range of 115 km and a top speed of 90 km/h, according to the company. Moreover, the company said that the new 450S will continue to offer the segment's best technology and performance. Ather also announced the new prices for the 450X product line under the now revised FAME-II framework. The FAME II subsidy, one of the important levers that accelerated EV adoption in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, is revised to Rs 10,000 per kWh with a maximum cap of 15 per cent of the ex-factory price. Ather announces new e-scooter '450S' with 3 kWh battery pack

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Hero MotoCorp-backed Ather Energy plans to expand its operations to around 24 cities by the end of 2021-22 as it looks to cater to customers across the country, a top company official said on Tuesday.
 The company, which on Tuesday introduced its second electric scooter 450X, also plans to take its overall production capacity to 1.3 lakh units per annum by the end of FY22.
 With added sales infrastructure and new products, the company aims to touch revenue of Rs 1,800 crore by March 2022 from the expected Rs 540 crore in next fiscal.
 "With Ather 450X we are excited to be expanding across the country. This year we are starting operations in eight more cities and setting up retail partnerships across the country for the same," Ather Energy CEO and co-founder Tarun Mehta told reporters here.
 The company currently sells its first product Ather 450 in Chennai and Bengaluru and now plans to set up operations across the country, including Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.
 "We have initiated bookings for the new model and the deliveries in the Delhi/NCR would begin by July," Mehta said.
 He added that the company has inked a pact with Tamil Nadu government to set up a new production facility at Hosur. Ather currently has a plant in Bengaluru.
 With the new plant getting operational over the next 6-9 months, the company would be able to raise its overall capacity to 1.3 lakh units in 2021-22, Mehta said. The company aims to have a capacity to roll out 30,000 in 2020-21 fiscal.
 "The enhanced capacity would help us to cut waiting periods for the two models," he added.
 Ather also plans to build charging infrastructure in cities where it plans to expand operations going ahead.
 When asked about the number of units sold so far, Mehta declined to comment saying the company has just started to scale up operations.
 Ather 450X is priced at Rs 99,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) if bought with two monthly subscription packs. The Plus subscription pack is priced at Rs 1,699 while Pro pack is tagged at Rs 1,999 per month.
 Without the said subscription packs, the Plus trim is priced at Rs 1.49 lakh while the Pro variant is tagged at Rs 1.59 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
 Ather 450X is a significant step-up from Ather 450 with improvements across multiple key parameters. The e-scooter comes with a 6kW motor, a new 2.9 kWh lithium-ion battery that comes mated with with four riding modes.
 The scooter can go from 0 to 40 kmph in just 3.3 seconds and real life range of 85 km in city conditions.
 Ather 450X comes with a 4G sim card and Wi-Fi along with Bluetooth connectivity, allowing riders to manage phone calls and music on the touch screen dashboard.
 The new touch screen dashboard comes with Snapdragon Quad Core processor. The scooter utilises Android Open Source to offer map navigation, on-board diagnostics and other unique features like over-the-air updates among others.
 Ather Energy was founded in 2013 by IIT Madras alumni Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain. Currently, it is backed by founders of Flipkart, Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, Hero MotoCorp and Tiger Global.

Initially consumers will be provided with a lot of data, information and content and the company will target cities like <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> and Chennai where infrastructure and awareness for Electric Vehicles has slowly been building. “The government has been supportive of the electric vehicle mission and is making strong statements by passing legislations that support electric vehicle production. When we go to manufacturers and ask them to make new parts for electric vehicles, they realize that this is the future and are complaint to the new requirements,” says Mehta who has been supportive of the state’s encouragement in terms of subsidies. R&amp;D infrastructure and first Designing in India “As most of the auto industry will get affected in the next two decades due to the Electric Vehicle revolution, the government needs to encourage Original Equipment Manufacturers to invest in more Research and Development. We don’t have manufacturing companies for most of the components for electric vehicles like Lithium ion batteries which can be easily manufactured in the country,” Mehta laments that most of the cost occurs in importing the special batteries that aren’t manufactured in India. Ather Energy imports cells from abroad but the company designs, manufactures and distribute the battery packs in their factory in Whitefield, Bengaluru. Mehta predicts that in an individual electric scooter at scale the battery cost can go upto Rs. 40,000 out of which the government can save Rs. 15,000 by manufacturing it locally. The Lithium ion battery cells are a common requirement in most electric vehicles whether its from companies like <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> or Mahindra &amp; Mahindra. India currently imports 100% of Lithium-ion cells and M&amp;M has stated a potential loss of Rs. 200,000 per vehicle amounting towards a total of Rs. 30 million against supplying 150 e-Veritos, which is not a good sign. Lithium ion cells manufacturing can be really expensive for a start-up and it is a project that ideally the government can take up with foreign partners.Even if the government undertakes a small investment in Lithium ion cells, it can take away the <keyword id="6358355" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex">Forex</keyword> risk out completely as it will result in encouraging further investments. The India government wishes to get as many as six million electric vehicles on the roads by 2020, with two thirds of it being either a bus or a two wheeler.

 Backed by tiger global and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> founder, Sachin Bansal, Ather revealed a model scooter Ather S340 in February this year. And we were there to see the founders extremely excited. 
 
Tarun Mehta, co-founder and chief executive officer, Ather had mentioned that time that the scooter will go on sale early next year. 
 
While he explained the intricacies of the electric scooter, Ather S340 looked like a sleek scooty except much sturdier. 
 It has a tablet-based console integrated with multiple apps such as <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> Maps. The scooter is capable of alerting users to problems and make driving much smoother. 
 
Mehta had claimed that the scooter can run till 100km on a full charge and is charged up to 70-80% in an hour. 
 
Ather has purchased a facility in white field to start production for the same and also develop an R&amp;D centre. 
 To develop a system that makes electric scooters more adoptable, it is important to use the funds towards building a network of charging stations all over the country and expanding the product offerings much like <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> had done with its sleek cars. 
 
The future could look much cleaner and electrifying if interest in e-vehicles is more charged up.
