Unveiling the marvels: 10 engineering triumphs in India's tunnel landscape

New Delhi, Feb 27 () NITI Aayog supported Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and Nasscom have joined hands to impart Artificial Intelligence-based learning at Atal Tinkering Labs aimed at empowering students to innovate and create valuable solutions to problems. With an imperative to empower the youngest minds of the country with the latest technologies, NITI Aayog, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) in collaboration with the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) on Thursday launched an AI-based Module rolled out for students in Indian schools, an official release said. The objective of the AI-based module is to leverage the full potential of AIM's ATL and empower students to innovate and create valuable solutions benefiting society at large.The module contains activities, videos and experiments for students to work through and learn various concepts of AI.India can add 1.3 per cent to its GDP on an annual basis through the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence, Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog said at the module launch."Indians can find solutions to the challenges of a shared connected zero emission world, improving learning outcomes, disease like tuberculosis, cancer among others. "If we are able to find solutions to these challenges for the 1.3 billion people of India, we can find solutions for the 7.5 billion people of the world too," Kant said.The module will start teaching young children from a very young age, he said, adding "This is path breaking, it combines playing and academics and our job is to make things very interesting. We want to make artificial intelligence a great fun, so that children can enjoy it, they can evolve and learn and take India forward."It has been estimated that by 2030, the global market in AI is likely to be in the range of USD 15 to 15.5 trillion of which India's share will be close to a trillion dollars.Mission Director Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog R Ramanan said AI is going to be an integral part of the new 21st century innovations."We are proud to introduce the Learn-It-Yourself module in all our 5000 Atal Tinkering Labs with over 2.5 million students having access to it. The Atal New India Challenge is part of <keyword id="2665691" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Niti-Aayog">NITI Aayog</keyword>, and will not only offer money, but provide mentorship for the winning ideas. Participants have been invited to present their design-ready products, that will be assessed on three verticals - capability, intent and potential to productise technologies. The prospective innovators will have the option of applying their product to any of the 17 identified focus areas that include smart mobility, predictive maintenance of rolling stock and waste management. Once an idea has been shortlisted for AIM, the person responsible will be supplemented with mentorship and incubation facilities as per the requirements of the project. The end goal is to ensure wider deployment for the product. NITI Aayog to open applications for Atal Innovation Mission for MSMEs, startups and inventors in India

The Indian government wants to plug the brain drain happening in the country and is taking concrete steps towards it. 
 
In a bid to support innovation and entrepreneurship, the government will help create enterprises worth $300-500 billion in next five years. 
 Speaking at <keyword id="6426108" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="surge">SURGE</keyword> in Bengaluru, Binod Bawri of the <keyword id="2746648" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Atal-Innovation-Mission">Atal Innovation Mission</keyword> said, “This fund of funds would be a significant part of the upcoming budget session.” 
 
Atal Innovation Mission, or AIM was launched by PM Narendra Modi to inculcate innovation in young minds and to fund start ups across India. 
 
Meanwhile, he also spoke about patents as India has huge pendency of patent, copyright and trademark applications and startups often get caught up in this web, when registering their innovative products and services. 
 
“The government is also working to ease the process for startups by recruiting patent officers and we will bring significant changes in patent in the coming years,” said Bawri. 
 
Another major focus under AIM would be ‘Grand Challenges’, under which top 10 challenges would be recognised in each sector and innovative ideas will be sought to resolve those. 
 Reiterating its claim to help startups, the Indian government is working towards fulfilling its promises made during ‘<keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>, Standup India’ initiative. 
 
“To fuel Startup India, the government is also trying to change the way it works and is bringing business models used by successful companies around the world,” said Bawri. 
 
The government is going to measure objectives, set up a benchmark, bring in policies and map the process of implementation. 
 
Talking about the brain drain happening and many startups going to other countries like Singapore and the UK to fulfil their dreams, Bawri said policies have been laid out to ease tax exemptions and exit routes and they will be implemented soon. 
 
When asked about the mindset of many entrepreneurs on giving up on their dreams due to failures, he said the thinking was changing. 
 
“The culture of accepting failure and moving on is coming up. It is important to have role models, who have success as well as failure stories to share to encourage people,” said Bawri.

On his 5-day visit to the United States, Urban Development Minister M <keyword id="74369" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Venkaiah-Naidu">Venkaiah Naidu</keyword> said that India's economy is back on track and the country's growth rate is likely to cross eight per cent in the coming years. 
 
While inviting foreign investors to India, Naidu told them to take advantage of the existing business-friendly atmosphere of the country. 
 "Public life in India is undergoing a rapid transformation. The economy is back on track, inflation is under control, and growth rate is likely to cross eight per cent in the coming years," Naidu, 66, said in his interaction with the American industry leaders at a round table organised by the <keyword id="236377" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-India-Business-Council">US India Business Council</keyword> (USIBC). 
 While talking about the initiatives <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> has undertaken, Naidu had also mentioned social security schemes and affordable housing programs that could be launched anytime soon. 
 Naidu also invited corporations to invest in Smart Cities, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and <keyword id="2130852" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Urban-transformation">Urban Transformation</keyword> (AMRUT) projects, a USIBC statement said. 
 
As per an Economic Times report, Naidu also explained the smart cities to them and said that the smart cities will incorporate the use of solar energy, rain water harvesting, good sanitation, drinking water and smart public transportation. Guidelines on selection of the cities, financing mechanisms and incentives for private sector participation were also explained. 
 Expressing optimism in Naidu's vision, USIBC President <keyword id="1085906" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Aghi">Mukesh Aghi</keyword> said, "Flagship programs such as Smart Cities, AMRUT and Housing for All reflect the Indian government's dedication to innovation and technology while not overlooking the urgent need to provide all citizens with access to basic necessities such as sanitation, water, power and means to earning a livelihood".

7) Credit guarantee scheme 
Credit guarantee scheme will be introduced for start-ups in the next 4 years, funds of around 500 crores will be given every year 
 
8) No inspection of startups for 3 years 
No inspection for 3 years of start-up businesses in respect of labour, environment law compliance post self-certification. Thereafter, they will get exemption on the basis of their experience and turnover. 
 
9) Compliance regime based on self-certification and One-page registration form 
One page registration form can be available on smartphone via an app. Mobile app will be launched on April 1. Registration of startup company can be done in one day! 
 
10) New <keyword id="94495" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Innovation">innovation</keyword> centres will come up 
Atal Innovation mission will give encouragement to state-of-the-art innovation centres. 31 innovation centres at national institutes, 7 new research parks like IIT-M and 5 new bio-clusters will come up.

How do these products help companies meet their sustainability goals? Researchers and developers worldwide are analyzing trends and designing solutions in response to climate change with MATLAB and Simulink. You can view their work, including clean energy products, scientific papers, and financial models on MathWorks climate research and development webpage. With MathWorks tools you can computationally model energy generators and storage devices such as wind turbines, batteries, and solar panels. It can be dangerous and expensive to do research and testing with the real system - you don't want battery fires or snapping turbine blades. Modelling and simulation can help plug this gap. Can you give us some examples of that? An example of MathWorks helping bring green technologies to market is through our work with Ather, an electric two-wheeler company from Bangalore. When the company began, they did not have the time, money, or people to build prototypes for each vehicle. This problem was solved by using MATLAB and Simulink to scale up the speed of testing. Ather scooters come equipped with a touchscreen GPS, remote diagnostics based on data patterns of other users, and an intelligent battery that can autonomously change modes to ensure the highest efficiency. With MATLAB, Simulink, and Model-Based Design, the company identified and validated the best ideas through simulation, making it possible to deliver a more full-featured scooter in less time. Another startup, Boston Metal, introduced groundbreaking technology aimed at producing steel in a more sustainable and cheaper way. The patented technology, <keyword id="14327016" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="molten-oxide-electrolysis" source="Orion">Molten Oxide Electrolysis</keyword> (MOE), replaces traditional processes through the use of direct electric current to separate chemical compounds. Boston Metal’s method produces liquid iron with a byproduct of oxygen instead of carbon, a cleaner and simpler process. You spoke about electrification earlier. Could you give us insights into MathWorks’ electrification efforts for climate change issues across sectors such as automotive, energy, <keyword id="6354525" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="healthcare" source="Orion">healthcare</keyword>, etc.? There is a growing demand for engineers to meet the worldwide demand for electric vehicles (EVs). To address this, MathWorks along with Bosch and NIT Calicut jointly created and delivered a new final-year undergraduate course, Electric Vehicle System Engineering. This is a good example of collaboration between academia and industry to address the talent shortage. We work with various industry associations to deliver professional development programmes for working professionals to help build skills around electrification. Many incubators and accelerators across the world have been partnering with us through the MathWorks Accelerator Program. We have signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with governmental organizations like Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) to extend this to hundreds of accelerators across the country. But when the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-layoffs-2022-causes-outcomes-2022-11">tidal wave of layoffs in the tech industry</a> hit his employer, Agarwal found himself without a job — setting off a stressful 60-day timer to either find a new one that would come with visa sponsorship, or return to India.Big tech companies like Amazon, Meta, and Twitter have sponsored close to 45,000 H-1B visa holders in the last three years, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-11-21/2022-tech-layoffs-leave-h-1b-visa-holders-in-limbo?leadSource=uverify%20wall">according to a report from Bloomberg</a>. It's unclear how <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-layoffs-tech-ceo-pandemic-boom-last-forever-dumb-mistake-2022-11">recent tech layoffs</a> have impacted many visa-holders, but <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=639257cf722a6809ba294ef5&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theinformation.com%2Farticles%2Flaid-off-tech-workers-with-visas-face-deadline-but-job-openings-remain">The Information</a> reported that Meta and Amazon's recent layoffs alone likely affected hundreds. Agarwal, and the many other visa-holders in this limbo after losing their tech jobs, are in for a real challenge if they want to stay in the US, lawyers and other experts told Insider. There are still tech jobs available even in a market downturn. Finding one willing to go through the time and expense of sponsoring an H-1B visa, however, is more difficult.The whole experience has soured some, like Agarwal, on the idea of continuing to work in American tech at all when the threat of having to uproot an entire life is always lingering."Who would want to move their lives in this way?" Companies like Amazon, Meta, Google, Twitter, and Microsoft have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-google-twitter-speak-out-against-trump-h1b-visa-freeze-2020-6">long relied on H-1B visas to bring in the talent</a> they need to fill positions in specialized, competitive fields like engineering and computer science. Leaders like Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, have long advocated for reforming the H-1B system to allow more of that talent to work in the US. If the current situation continues as the combination of job losses, scarce availability of H-1B visas, and strict rules for visa-holders, this specialized workforce could bring their talents to places with more permissive policies like Canada or the nations of the European Union."I do think the US is still the hub of some of the smartest, most diverse people in the world who come here for education, working, and living," <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=639257cf722a6809ba294ef5&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fsoundarya-balasubramani%2F">Soundarya Balasubramani</a>, an author and tech worker who lives in the US on a work visa, said. "But I also think that we might be overstating the impact of living in the US sometimes." If that happens, experts and insiders warn, that could <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-immigrant-tech-execs-venture-capitalists-oppose-trump-work-visas-2020-7">undermine America's vaunted competitiveness in the tech sector</a>."We have laws in effect today that don't reflect the reality of the world we live in today in 2022," Jason Finkelman, an immigration attorney based in Austin, Texas, said. "This antiquated immigration system does not provide robust, flexible options for the most talented, skilled foreign nationals to come to this country and work. And it hurts not only top talent, but it also hurts US employers seeking to grow and innovate with that."<h2>Disillusionment and frustration with working in the US</h2>The net effect here is that the US could become less desirable as a place to live for immigrants looking to break into tech, several experts and tech workers said. Those who leave may not be interested in navigating the process for coming back, and the next generation may not be interested in the US at all.Layoffs and bureaucracy have undermined Silicon Valley's reputation as a good place for immigrants to build a life in the US, and might encourage some to either stay in their home countries or look elsewhere to find a job abroad, the experts said. It could hurt America's ability to compete in the long run.Indeed, some Indian immigrants to the US already see opportunities in returning home to participate in the country's booming tech sector, <a href="https://srajagopalan.substack.com/p/why-everyone-should-pay-more-attention">Shruti Rajagopalan</a>, <a href="https://srajagopalan.substack.com/p/why-everyone-should-pay-more-attention">an investor with Emergent Ventures</a>, <a href="https://srajagopalan.substack.com/p/why-everyone-should-pay-more-attention">wrote in a recent blog post</a>. The 60-day countdown to find a new job is even more stressful for those with families.Finkelman said clients have told him they really only have two to three weeks to find new jobs, or they'll spend the rest of their time pulling their kids out of school and making arrangements to get everyone out of the country before time runs out."That's highly disruptive to any family," he said. Actually finding those jobs is proving difficult for some, as well. One tech worker, who Twilio recently laid off, said that any job that might be willing to sponsor an H-1B visa now has at least ten other people interviewing at the same time. This person asked not to be named to preserve their professional-career prospects.Many others have expressed similar experiences in Linkedin posts, <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=639257cf722a6809ba294ef5&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fsearch%2Fresults%2Fcontent%2F%3Fkeywords%3D%2523h1b%2520%2523layoffs%26origin%3DSWITCH_SEARCH_VERTICAL%26sid%3Dyu7">saying they have a short window of time to find a new position and are open to any leads</a>. Some, like Agarwal, found a job with time to spare and are able to stay in the US. But not everybody who needs a visa will be so fortunate."There's no scenario in which everyone that got laid off, specifically those that are dependent on work authorization, are gonna get a job," Manan Mehta, the founder of Unshackled Ventures, which helps immigrants found companies in the US, said. <h2>Experts said immigration reform is needed to turn things around</h2>The entire situation has reignited calls for reform to the H-1B visa system, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trumps-ban-work-visas-h1b-immigration-restrictions-attorneys-2020-6">which has seen a turbulent past few years</a>. The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/22/us/politics/trump-h1b-work-visas.html">Trump administration tried to suspend much of the program in mid-2020</a>. That effort, combined with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, has slowed the approval process and added layers of bureaucracy.Mehta suggested that a good start would be to lay a path for laid-off H-1B workers to go the entrepreneurial route and let them found their own startups.Another useful area of reform would be to give visa-holders more flexibility to switch jobs without getting mired in bureaucracy, Romish Badani, the CEO of Bridge, a startup that helps employers manage the immigration process, said. His company provides legal aid and services for companies not familiar with the H-1B process so they can have the option to hire people who need visa sponsorship. Agarwal suggested that just more than 60 days to find a new job would help.What the experts all agreed on, ultimately, is that some kind of change to the H-1B is necessary and overdue if the US wants to continue being an attractive market for specialized tech talent."These people are great builders," Agarwal said.
