<ul><li><keyword id="10862183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-crime-season-2">Delhi Crime season 2</keyword> is the most awaited web series of 2021, <keyword id="15508" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="YouGov">YouGov</keyword> survey.</li><li>Among the shows released this year, Family Man Season 2 is the most popular with two in five calling it their favourite series.</li></ul>The Coronavirus pandemic gave a huge boost to the booming OTT video- streaming industry in India. As consumers endured lockdowns and restrictions, digital content became a major source of entertainment as well as a platform for the industry to connect with their audiences in these unprecedented times. YouGov’s latest study reveals that among the upcoming web series this year, Season 2 of Delhi Crime is the most awaited show by OTT platform viewers in the country (as said by 22%). The International Emmy winning drama series enthralled viewers with its first season and we see excitement building up for the next edition, despite the absence of an official release date. <div type="image" title="image002" msid="84997672" hostid="261"></div>It seems audiences are looking forward to the sequels of some of the popular shows of the past years. Along with Season 2 of Delhi Crime, viewers are also excited for the sequel of Voot’s mythological thriller Asur (20%), Kay Kay Menon’s Special Ops Season 2 (19%) , Kota Factory’s Season 2 (18%), Four More Shots Please Season 3 (14%) and Little Things Season 4 (13%). New shows like Rudra- the edge of darkness (11%) and Finding Anamika (9%) have also managed to spark interest and feature among the most awaited shows of 2021. YouGov also asked people about the web series they enjoyed watching in 2021. Among the shows already released this year, action-thriller Family Man Season 2 (40%) emerged as the most favourite show of OTT viewers in urban India. The ever-charming Manoj Bajpayee’s performance, and the engaging plot totally lived up to the expectations of fans, especially after the cliff-hanger ending of season 1. <div type="image" title="image004" msid="84997697" hostid="261"></div>Other series that received the appreciation and love of the audiences are Tandav (14%), Aspirants (12%) and Maharani (10%). With lack of entertainment choices, it is not surprising to see consumers shift to digital entertainment during the pandemic. Data suggests that a majority of respondents (59%) claim to have watched more content online than on TV in the past one year. One in ten have started exploring global (non-English) content in the past year (9%) and almost as many (11%) have begun watching regional content (non-Hindi) during this time. Roughly a fifth among those who claim to watch regional content like watching Telugu (22%) and Marathi (20%) language series. Gujarati (18%), Punjabi (17%), Tamil and Kannada (16% each) series are also popular among people. Language has become an important factor in determining people’s choice of content. One in eight respondents (12%) consider the language or origin of a series important when deciding what to watch on OTT platforms. Having said that, the genre of the show (22%), recommendations of family &amp; friends (21%) and reviews and ratings (19%) are ranked higher than language as consideration factors by people. <div type="image" title="image006" msid="84997721" hostid="261"></div> When it comes to digital platforms, Amazon Prime (53%), Netflix (47%) and Disney Hotstar (43%) are the most preferred channels for watching Indian web shows. Even though international networks are more popular among the masses, regional platforms like Sun NXT, Aha and Hoichoi also feature in the list, indicating the growth of regional content consumption in India. <div type="image" title="image008" msid="84997744" hostid="261"></div> With an interest in regional language streaming, non-Bollywood cinema is likely to come out of Covid in a better shape. Almost half of the total surveyed respondents (49%) said that they are open to watching regional movies in theatres, with younger adults between the age of 18-39 years more likely to say so than older ones of 40 years and above. Data collected online by YouGov Omnibus among 1009 respondents in the country between June 15th-20th, 2021 using YouGov’s panel of over 11 million people worldwide. Data is representative of the adult online population in the country.

It has been an eventful year but for the platform too, it has been one of a lot of milestones. “We’re the fastest platform in India to hit a million active, paying direct-to-consumer subscribers in less than a year,” shared Ferzad Palia, Head – Voot Select &amp; International Business, Viacom18, during an exclusive interaction with us. The platform was launched in March last year, right before the country went into its first (of many) lockdowns. And while it would have been a disadvantage for any business to launch at the moment, it did not work as a deterrent for Voot Select. People were stuck at home, desperately looking for some sort of entertainment. With production of fresh content on hold everywhere too, even TV wasn’t showing anything new. That’s where OTT players like Voot gained big. People were open to experimenting. And they were willing to pay for content that they liked. So eventually, its launch time worked in its favor. “Once we got off to a good start, the first thing that worked wonderfully well for us was our first original, <keyword id="3712608" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="asur">Asur</keyword>. It really got the audience to sit up and take notice because that's the power of one story. That probably gave us our biggest jump, right in the beginning which then got people to sample us and see what else we had to offer. And people liked that as well,” said Palia. The early inflow of audiences that came onto the platform put the platform on a strong growth trajectory and good momentum right, explained Palia. However, has the platform been able to keep up this initial momentum? “Yes, and that is really heartening for us. Obviously, we're not growing at the same pace as we grew in the first four months but that's also because we were a new service. But we've seen consistent month-on-month growth, even after the country has pretty much opened up. Despite being a price-sensitive market, there's been a big change in the audience mindset because they are now willing to pay for content, and good content experiences as long as there's something there for them to buy and at an affordable price,” said Palia. So is he confident that this growth momentum will continue, even this year? “While its early for us to gauge, I think we will grow in multiples. Our plan for FY22 is essentially doubling or even tripling down on originals, our before-TV offerings, our international suite as well as our marketing spends. If we do a few things right, like we did in the year gone by, we'll be right up there,” he answered. The platform will also continue to focus on strengthening its technology, to be able to give people the best possible experience, added Palia. The focus will also be on regional original content owing to the fact that there has been an increase in the amount of subscribers coming from outside the top 10 metro cities. “We already have about five originals ready, which we are yet to release, in Tamil and Bangla. And we will be creating more this year. We're still very new and therefore wanted to focus on getting the first market right, which is the Hindi-speaking audiences. And now that we're very confident with that, we will now start getting our learnings from regional markets. There should be between 10- 12 regional originals from us in FY22. And lastly, is he concerned about the OTT guidelines impacting the way they tell stories? “Not at all! Guidelines have always been around. We know that we have a responsibility to society, to the audience, to our customers, whether they're paying customers or customers who are on our AVOD service. We've always managed to stay within the boundaries as a responsible entertainer so I don't see that changing at all. There's nothing on our platform which circumvents any of the rules,” he explained. Along with new <keyword id="6157640" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="regional-content">regional content</keyword>, Voot Select will also be the new home to Showtime content in India and the exclusive destination for upcoming Paramount+ shows in the country. Its international content offering will include titles like Dexter (Limited Series), Ray Donavan Feature-Length Film, The First Lady from showtime and Frasier (Reboot) &amp; Why Women Kill S2 from Paramount+ amongst others.

As per a study conducted by NielsenIQ commissioned by Amazon for TV streaming trends, 97% of Indians prefer to stream their favourite movies and shows at dinner time. The good news is that they’re not cutting down on family time, as 74% watched these services with family, especially spouses and children. Family streaming also means they all want to watch it together on their big screens. According to the study, 78% respondents prefer streaming content on their TVs through streaming sticks, smart TVs, and set-top-boxes as compared to smartphones, tablets and laptops. TV equals painless streaming In addition to family time, TV watching offers ergonomic comfort. “Viewing on TV may also allow one to maintain a comfortable body posture, alleviating the aches and pains sometimes associated with watching content while holding the phone,” the study says. Adding to this is the active broadband connections at most homes. TVs also provide better video and sound quality, and convenience of accessing a variety of content across OTT providers and online sources. Voice assistants, and the convenience of watching live shows and DTH channels all in one single screen also helps. “Online video streaming has come a long way since its inception, and so has streaming habits of consumers. What has remained a constant is our preference to view content on the biggest screen in our homes – the television,” said <keyword id="20216460" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="parag-gupta" source="keywords">Parag Gupta</keyword>, Director and Country Manager, Amazon Devices India. What does India love to stream? Almost 66% of respondents of the study also said that they streamed five hours daily over the weekend. On weekdays, most of them keep it down to three hours of streaming. As per the study, India loves to watch comedy – which is the most popular genre of content watched. It’s closely followed by sports, thriller, romantic, horror, international TV shows, and news in order of preference. Ormax too recently released a report on the most streamed movies and shows on OTT. <keyword id="19911186" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shahid-kapoor" source="keywords">Shahid Kapoor</keyword>’s Farzi became the most watched Hindi web series with a viewership of around 37 million. Anil Kapoor’s The Night Manager however comes a close second with 28.4 million. Bhuvam Bam starrer Taaza Khabar came at number three with a viewership of 23.5 million. Made in Heaven season 2 ranked at number 10 with 15.7 million. “Farzi is the only show to cross the 30 million viewership mark in 2023, and is now the most-watched subscription video on demand (SVOD) series in India of all time. Two advertising video on demand AVOD shows from JioCinema, i.e., Asur 2 &amp; Taali, feature in the top five most-watched shows of the year,” said Ormax.
