She also happens to be the personal astrologer to singers SZA and Kehlani.Insider spoke with five astrologers, many of whom were a little bit more astrologically optimistic about 2021. A common refrain this year is that pretty much anything would be better than 2020. But they all said 2020 has been a good year for the astrology business.In a year economically and cosmically like no other, astrology seems to be one of the industries that's seen substantial gains. Amidst the uncertainty of a global pandemic, a crumbling economy, and some <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dont-have-to-worry-about-us-murder-hornet-invasion-experts-2020-5">murder hornets</a>, people are seeking clarity. <h2>Astrologers are feeling the results</h2>Sykes has seen a growth in demand for her services, where she answers questions that clients pose. Her <a href="https://www.patreon.com/iJaadee">Patreon</a>, where she charges $9.98 a month, has taken off - she has 3,820 subscribers - and she has over 100,000 followers on her social media channels. She's planning on offering six-hour chart reading sessions for $998 soon.<div type="image" title="IMG_9586" height="1741" width="2316" msid="79817403" hostid="261"></div>Veteran astrologer <a href="https://unlockastrology.com/">Samuel Reynolds</a>, who's been practicing for over 30 years (his sun is in Scorpio, his moon is in Leo, and his rising is Pisces), said that he usually has five to six students in his <a href="https://unlockastrology.com/classes/group-classes/nitty-gritty-1/">virtual beginner's astrology class</a>. This time around, he had 30 students - and had to hire a teaching assistant for the first time. Reynolds said that he's usually booked about two weeks out. But as of mid-December, he's booked through March.<a href="https://twitter.com/rossdclark?lang=en">Ross Clark</a> (Leo sun, Capricorn moon, Scorpio rising), the CEO of buzzy astrology app Sanctuary, told Business Insider that the app has seen "real growth" with its paid offerings in 2020. She said she's done about 400 readings this year alone.The major increases may just be limited to astrologers who offer more individualized services (like personal readings). <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/astrologer-susan-miller-morning-routine-calls-bank-2019-8">Legendary astrologer Susan Miller</a> (who won't divulge her sun and moon, since she thinks it takes focus from readers) told Insider that business has remained steady this year. She attributes that to the fact that she's already "big," and her audience of millions continues to stick around."It's steady. And thank God for that. I have people to pay," she said.But she did launch an app over the summer; she said it's too early to know exactly how well it's been doing, but it "looks like it's doing great."Other astrologers are also launching new products: Celebrity astrologer <a href="https://chaninicholas.com/">Chani Nicholas</a> announced today she's launching her own app (she also keeps her sun and moon private). Tabourn, the astrologer who went full-time in March, launched her own paid membership community.<h2>Astrology on the rise</h2>Astrology as a business didn't just come out of nowhere in 2020. It was already an industry on the rise, accelerated this year by the confusion and life-altering conditions of the pandemic. As <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astrology-rising-popularity-means-millions-revenue-smartphone-apps-2020-11">Insider's Barbara Smith previously reported</a>, revenue for astrology apps grew to nearly $40 million in 2019 - a 64% increase, <a href="https://sensortower.com/blog/astrology-apps-2019-revenue-downloads">according to data from SensorTower</a>. <a href="https://www.ibisworld.com/united-states/market-research-reports/psychic-services-industry/">Per IBISWorld</a>, "mystical services" grew by 1.4% from 2016 to 2019. The industry as a whole is worth $2.2 billion.From March 15 to 21, the term "coronavirus astrology" <a href="https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=US&amp;q=coronavirus%20astrologylogy">spiked on Google Trends</a>; "<a href="https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=US&amp;q=Astrologylogy">Astrology</a>" itself has remained high throughout the year, and grown in popularity throughout the past month. Nicholas said that, throughout the year, she's seen increased interest in workshops and general astrological information."I think just naturally, because of the conditions that we're in, it led to people being perhaps a little bit more open or curious as to what other people were saying about why we're in the moment that we're in," she said.<h2>What people want to know</h2>If you had been paying attention to the astrology of 2020, you would have kept a close eye on <a href="https://www.astrology.com/article/2020-saturn-pluto-conjunction-astrology/">January's Saturn-Pluto conjunction</a>. Several astrologers Insider spoke to highlighted the significance of the conjunction. The last time we had one <a href="https://www.timelineastrology.com/saturn-pluto-conjunction.html#:~:text=In%201982%2C%20the%20Saturn%2DPluto,for%20its%20impact%20on%20humanity.">was at the start of the AIDS epidemic</a>; it also, according to Nicholas, aligned with the Bubonic Plague.But while a destabilizing pandemic may have prompted more people to seek out astrology, their concerns weren't necessarily virus-related."What I expected was people asking specifically about things related to COVID-19, 'Am I going to get it, am I sick?' Things I really didn't feel comfortable answering and wouldn't have really answered," Reynolds said. That's still its own form of reflection."What we do, instead of pinpointing exact and precise careers - I'm not saying that it can't be done, but it is more difficult - is we tell the client what they need to have in their career in order to feel satisfied," she said. <h2>So will 2021 actually be better?</h2>Tabourn says that the astrological forecast for 2021 is "less intense." Per Sykes, we should expect a boom in the tech industry and stock market. But the most interesting period of all should be from mid-May to July. Tabourn, Nicholas, and Reynolds all highlighted those months as particularly astrologically relevant.Reynolds said we'll still be dealing with the fallout of the pandemic in the first quarter of the year, and there will still be some unrest to contend with as well. And during that time, things might be looking up, according to Nicholas. "It feels like either something really good happens with the economy, or perhaps we have enough vaccines at that point to feel like we have a little bit more freedom, but there's something that feels relaxing and helpful and open - and, dare I say it - maybe even joyous around mid-May to end of July."

The Academy Award winner sat in front of an eggshell-colored wall in an undisclosed location in the United Kingdom. He donned a simple sage-colored crew neck t-shirt, topped with a huge smile. As we acquainted ourselves, I realized that there was no room for formalities. Still, the conversation felt as comfortable as the artist's cotton tee. Ahead of our interview, I imagined chatting with Common as he sat in the lotus position, burning incense and wearing a knitted kufi hat, a la Common of the early 2000s. I dreamed of a version of Common who was rapping his seminal <a href="https://www.insider.com/25-highest-selling-hip-hop-rap-albums-all-time">hip-hop love song</a>, "The Light," a track that sampled "Open Your Eyes" by the late Bobby Caldwell. I hoped for the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNw4amjdV0c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Peace, Love and Gap"</a> rapper from the clothing line's holiday campaign. "As the story goes, my mother spoke so highly about my friend and how great he was in the play that I kind of lost my fire after," he recalled. From that point on, Common channeled his energy into other creative outlets, later arriving at hip-hop, releasing his first studio album in 1992, "Can I Borrow a Dollar" at 20 years old. He worked to attain mastery of his craft, evidenced through his acclaimed musical works, which included his 2000 album, "Like Water for Chocolate." But it was in the face of a professional low point, that he decided to pursue acting. <h3>Common began acting after a musical low point in his career</h3><div type="image" title="Common attends the 2015 Met Gala." height="998" width="1331" msid="100382445" hostid="261" sizebytes="67678"></div>Common's fifth studio album, "Electric Circus," was a watershed moment. The 2002 album was too esoteric and the rapper lost support from his core audience. "Before I might not have gotten a lot of radio play, but the hip-hop community would be like, 'We're rocking with you. This is dope,'" Common reflected. "And with this album, they were like, 'What the hell is this? What are you doing?'" The album's dicey reception prompted Common to embark on an exploration of sorts. "I went to acting class. I was like, 'I can become an actor,'" he told Insider. "I had the spirit and the soul for it."Common does not shy away from conversations about spirituality. As a budding actor, a coach once told him an actor can heal audiences through performance. He was intrigued. "It became not only just this thing that I was pursuing, but it became a spiritual quest for me too," he said, "and a journey."After years of training, in 2005 the actor got his first movie callback for the Joe Carnahan-directed film, "Smokin' Aces." Common has since amassed quite an impressive amount of on-camera credits — in film and television — including his role in Ava DuVerney's "Selma" in which he portrayed civil rights leader, James Bevel. The drama is both dystopian and suspenseful, telling the story of a future civilization living underground. Common plays Sims, a villain who believes that he is protecting the lives and the livelihoods of the citizens of the silo. "I found my preparation started with me finding who Sims was in this story," said the actor. "Sims definitely has a lot of traits that are not me. And what I mean specifically is he's working for what would be 'the government' in the silo. He is enforcing those laws, for real." Conversely Common, the activist and individual, tends to "question the establishment," he said.Sims' storyline picks up in the second half of the series, but don't miss his performance in a monologue during the fifth episode, entitled "The Janitor's Boy." It is absolutely riveting. Both Common's growth and gift, on camera, are evident. This actor has improved his craft."I put the work in it because I love it and I want to do it for the rest of my life, just the same way I want to make music for the rest of my life," the actor said. Prologue: The history of the <keyword id="81273" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="British-Raj" source="Orion">British Raj</keyword> in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> is so vast and so full of life that no movie – be it the action-heavy RRR, a gamified Lagaan or even the many passionate Bhagat Singh movies – could scratch the surface of it. But an American and a Frenchman paired up to achieve this in their book ‘<keyword id="400044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Freedom-at-Midnight" source="Orion">Freedom at Midnight</keyword>’. It’s the story of India that many Indians know little about. For years, I have regaled many with the unbelievable anecdotes from the book, which is soon to be made into a web series. As we complete <keyword id="2177193" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="75-years-of-independence" source="Orion">75 years of independence</keyword>, I believe a brief summary of this epic is in order for we all need to know the history of how we got here today, breathing free in a country we can call our own. <div type="image" title="India at 75" msid="93508033" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;India at 75&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> A century and a half after Vasco da Gama discovered India, most of Europe had given up bland meals, and now pepper mills are on every dinner table. But India remained a free country only until the 1600s. That’s when Dutch traders decided to raise the rates of a pound of pepper by five shillings — a move that made a cartel of Englishmen receive an official sanction from Queen Elizabeth I to exclusively trade in all countries beyond the Cape of Good Hope. The company, called East India Company (EIC), also the world’s first company to issue equity shares – kickstarted a reign of evil, by a race which believed was ‘destined to govern and subdue’, according to Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre’s classic Freedom at Midnight. <div type="image" title="Freedom At Midnight by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre" msid="93508039" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Freedom At Midnight by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The wolf of this yet to be formed Wall Street was Captain William Hawkins, a seaman who was more of a pirate than an explorer. He soon found himself in the court of Jahangir, in an empire so vast and wealthy that his own Queen would have appeared to be the ruler of a provincial hamlet in contrast. Queen, Kipling and memsahibs EIC’s coffers filled but India, with its numerous territories and squabbles, would not let him hold on to their policy of ‘trade not territory’. But white supremacy is to prevail amongst ‘lesser breeds without law’ as Jungle Book writer Rudyard Kipling puts it. Even the British born writer believed that the right to rule Indians was placed on British soldiers by “the inscrutable decree of the providence”. The British shouldered it and region after region was lured by treasures if not treachery, weak and powerful kings won with weak enemies. The great Maratha Shivaji himself was known to have admired the British who fought for their honour, as he laid siege on Surat. Droves of young English men arrived in this strange land – with men in sagging dhotis and bare-armed women in sarees, and travelled the length and breadth of the country into villages with rations and letters that proclaimed their rights. And, they were all taught one principle - The English ran the country but they dwell apart. Memsahibs in India started running a very large version of Downton Abbey – with dinner parties that boasted of a servant per guest. They also set the tone for the Victorian era social seclusion – probably to keep their men away from the exotic temptations of the state. But it also made the British much different from many rulers that made India their home. Also, they were sending away taxes they collected from them back to the crown, as Indians starved. The British in India lived it up, served by coolies, and none were ‘better than Gunga Din’, a poetic character that saves an Englishman. They hunted tigers and killed ‘almost all’ cheetahs, the smallest of the big cats - which are now extinct in India, thanks to the Raj. They were having champagne in silver buckets and golfing, in style – golf arrived in India 30 years before New York. They also built the world’s highest golf course at 11,000 feet on the Himalayas. Almost a century after India became a British colony directly under the Queen’s rule, after the devastating Second World War, the country’s parliament voted to ‘leave the country’. George VI was sad that he had let go of a country he always wanted to visit but couldn’t. To ensure there was a smooth transfer of power that didn't lead to anarchy, he chose his handsome cousin, who was known as much for his charm as his military prowess. The former trait would serve Louis Mountbatten more than the latter, as he became the lord and the last viceroy of India, as he took over what his predecessor called, ‘Operation Madhouse’. <div type="image" title="Louis Mountbatten" msid="93508078" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Louis Mountbatten&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The new-age Buddha and Christ Elsewhere in another continent and another British colony, a young lawyer who was an utter failure in Bombay, landed in South Africa and to his own surprise found success. He profusely read Henry Thoreau and Leo Tolstoy and the Gujarati brain of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was working in wonderful ways. <div type="image" title="Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi" msid="93508085" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> When the British government irked him by closing Transvaal borders to India, he led a movement of Thoreau’s civil disobedience with over 2,000 people that included women and children. He added his own twist – non-violence and he brought it back to India. Now called Gandhigiri, his principles continue to inspire generations across continents. The man who took a vow of poverty, had held on to his Ingersoll watch for years until it was stolen when he was travelling in a train. He was moved to tears as he told this story with child-like pain to Lord Mountbatten, but his loss was short-lived. The man who stole it, returned it and begged his forgiveness – which was given with a hug and a chuckle. Gandhigiri had taken over India at the time of Mountbatten’s arrival. Mountbatten knew that this man who Winston Churchill sneered at, ‘as a half-naked fakir’ was not to be taken lightly. After all, Gandhi had already sent back Sir Richard Cripps without a deal, refusing UK’s offer during the war to rule India as a British dominion. Goat curd and surgical precision Mountbatten called it Operation Seduction and while he forged a great friendship with Jawaharlal Nehru, Gandhi was another soul altogether. He insisted on eating his own goat curd at the Viceroy House, took prayer breaks and insisted that India should remain one – keep the baby alive instead of cutting it into two. Jinnah, however, was all vanity, which was deeply hurt when he received fewer seats during the 1937 provincial elections. He demanded a Muslim state. India would be divided with surgical precision, he promised Mountbatten. The King’s cousin, the book says, dealt with him like a sailor rather than a statesman but Mountbatten knew that he could not move the unmoved, and most of Congress were in favour of two nations. Rooms full of rubies and a pen pistol But it took India’s iron man, Vallabhai Patel, to keep the rest of India intact and convince over 500 rajas, princes, nawabs and nizams as they called themselves to shift their allegiance from the crown to the nation. Stronger than the unity statue built in his honour, Patel continued summing up a case for the jury even after he was handed a note saying that his wife passed away. <div type="image" title="The Statue Of Unity" msid="93508178" hostid="261" sizebytes="162276" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The Statue Of Unity&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Patel and the career bureaucrat, V.P. Menon, executed their operation seduction to gain control over men who were already seduced by sex, sport and the worst of all maladies - boredom. Most of them amused themselves with Lancaster pistols made of solid gold, rubies the size of pigeon eggs and working train sets on silver rails. The Jeff Bezos of that time, known to be the world’s richest, was the Nizam of Hyderabad, who had rooms full of precious stones eaten away by rats as the miser spent nothing and resorted to smoking the leftover cigarette butts of his departed guests! Most of the eccentric rajas sided with India – even Hari Singh of Kashmir, who wanted to be independent, was worn down by logic that a landlocked state would forever remain in a state of war. But the young Maharaja of Jodhpur, certain that his lavish life wouldn’t be approved by the Congress socialists, tried to go over to Jinnah’s side. But Menon’s watchful spies got wind of it, cornered him, and the Maharaja held a pen-pistol to the bureaucrat's forehead until Mountbatten confiscated it – and used it later to liven parties back home. Cursed by the stars Mountbatten was warned by the most popular astrologist of the time that August 15, 1947 was a ‘day cursed by stars’. He, however, chose sentiment over astrology – the date was the anniversary of the day Burma won against Japan, a war he was part of. It wasn’t just the viceroy, even Nehru and Jinnah did not see the bloodbath that followed. What stopped them from seeing what was to come was their own tolerance and atheism. Communal passions ran so high and so deep that right after the Union Jack came off the Viceroy house, Punjab and Bengal fell into a riotous rage – something a wily Gandhi always knew. That’s why the 78-year-old spent the midnight far away from the celebrations, spinning and lamenting the night India became independent, 75 years back. They see it as an emerging field following all the growth in the cannabis industry. <h3><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/first-vc-psychedelics-field-trip-ventures-canada-2019-6">Investors just launched the first VC dedicated exclusively to psychedelics, which they call the 'next wave' after the cannabis boom</a></h3><ul><li>Psychedelic drugs like psilocybin and ecstasy are starting to attract attention from investors.</li><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, the world's first psychedelic-focused VC firm shared its plan for seeding promising startups in the space.</li><li>Based in Canada, the firm, called Field Trip Ventures, aims to open clinics in the US and partner with existing research groups.</li><li>Field Trip's founders hail from the marijuana investment world. That included running an experiment to extract DNA from a strawberry.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><h3><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-biotechnology-introductory-classes-for-nonscientists-2019-5">We took the two-day, $1,300 'biotech for dummies' class where healthcare executives, HR managers, and investors catch up on science for the first time since high school</a></h3>Our new healthcare fellow <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/clarrie-feinstein">Clarrie Feinstein</a> put out her first story this week - a look at why UnitedHealth Group or Carlyle Group are the likely acquirers of Magellan Health. <h3><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unitedhealth-carlyle-likely-to-acquire-magellan-health-leerink-2019-6">The biggest US health insurer and a top private-equity firm are likely buyers for $1.6 billion Magellan Health, according to Leerink</a></h3><ul><li>Magellan Health is likely to be acquired by UnitedHealth Group or Carlyle Group for about $85 to $90 a share, according to Ana Gupte, an analyst at SVB Leerink.</li><li>Magellan has a pharmacy-benefits business and a healthcare unit that offers insurance and other services, such as behavioral health.</li></ul>Clarrie also has the details on a move made by C<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-budget-health-insurance-for-undocumented-residents-2019-6">alifornia lawmakers to extend Medicaid coverage to undocumented residents between 19 and 25</a>. That makes California the first state to do so.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div> <h2>A trip out to Long Island</h2>Back in April (it's been a busy couple of months), I hopped on the Long Island Rail Road so I could see firsthand the ways in which hospitals are prepping for the future. What I saw took me a bit by surprise. As Northwell Health CEO Michael Dowling explained to me, about 50% of the health system's revenue now comes from services that are provided outside of the hospital. That's a big shift from a decade ago, when 80% of the health system's revenue came from hospitals. Here's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northwell-healths-michael-dowling-on-the-future-of-the-hospital-2019-5">a look at what Northwell's doing with its existing hospitals</a>. Dowling also made the case to me of why he thinks hospitals will be the one to disrupt the healthcare industry - rather than newcomers like Amazon or even CVS Health.
