The 10 biggest asteroids that pose a threat to Earth in 2020

In this case, the system features asteroids of different sizes — one much smaller than the other."Dinkinesh really did live up to its name; this is marvelous," Hal Levison, the principal investigator for Lucy who works at the Southwest Research Institute, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nasa.gov/image-article/nasas-lucy-spacecraft-discovers-2nd-asteroid-during-dinkinesh-flyby">said in a press release from NASA</a>. "When Lucy was originally selected for flight, we planned to fly by seven asteroids. With the addition of Dinkinesh, two Trojan moons, and now this satellite, we've turned it up to 11."Lucy flew by the asteroid system at a speed of 10,000 miles per hour, NASA said. The researchers working on the spacecraft had suspected that Dinkinesh might be a binary pair because of the way its brightness changed with time. The images the spacecraft returned confirmed their theory, according to the news release.Lucy's flight was intended to be a test of the spacecraft — and it passed with flying colors."This is an awesome series of images," Tom Kennedy, a guidance and navigation engineer at Lockheed Martin in Colorado, said in the news release. "They indicate that the terminal tracking system worked as intended, even when the universe presented us with a more difficult target than we expected."

That's why <keyword id="6360409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NASA">NASA</keyword> hopes to invest a significant chunk of federal money into a plan that involves "bagging" a small <keyword id="6549794" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="asteroid">asteroid</keyword> and dragging it back into orbit around the moon, later to be visited by astronauts who will bring back samples.

In President Obama's 2014 budget proposal, unveiled on Wednesday, the <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">space</keyword> agency called for a spending total of $17.7 billion, with $105 million of that money dedicated to identifying potentially hazardous asteroids, NASA said in a news conference on Wednesday. 
Of that, $78 million would go toward the <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/asteroids/news/asteroid_initiative.html">asteroid retrieval initiative</a>. 
If successful, this would be the "first-ever mission to identify, capture, and relocate an asteroid," <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/asteroids/news/asteroid_initiative.html">NASA administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement</a>. 
Though wrought with unexpected challenges, the plan to wrangle a fast-rotating space rock actually seems pretty simple on paper.

One of those things: the gigantic <keyword id="6549794" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="asteroid">asteroid</keyword> heading toward earth.

And You Thought The Debt Ceiling Was All You Had To Worry About – Trading was slow enough yesterday that traders had more than the usual allotment of time for chitchat. Quickly exhausting sports, politics and the rest of the usual roster, thinking and thoughts turned skyward.
They talked of the weekend news reports that an asteroid would be passing very, very near earth. How close was the key? Apparently, in mid-February, asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass within 21,000 miles of earth.
To put that in some perspective, the moon is 240,000 miles away and several GPS satellites orbit at 26,000 miles. So, the asteroid will come within orbits of satellites. No need to worry though, NASA assures us that their calculations show that it will not strike the earth. We're from the government and we're here to help you.
Let's hope NASA double-checked their math.

The 65-foot asteroid - which no space agency detected before it entered the atmosphere, because of its small size - caused broken windows and a number of injuries. In 1908, a 150-foot asteroid wiped out an area roughly the size of New York City over Tunguska, Russia with a force equivalent to a nuclear bomb. Over a million space rocks could strike Earth with more energy than a nuclear bomb, and we don't know where most of them are

<ul><li>Asteroids flying past Earth, even big ones, are now more common than before — especially since NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory can track these celestial objects. </li><li>Scientists believe that it’s only a matter of time before one of them eventually gets pulled into the Earth’s orbit. </li><li>That being said, it’s unlikely that anyone of them will be as catastrophic like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, but it may still be able to take out a whole city. </li></ul>Last week, an asteroid the size of the <keyword id="53850" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Empire-State-Building">Empire State Building</keyword> passed 4.6 million miles from Earth but could’ve been 500 times more destruction than the atomic bomb that fell on Hiroshima had it actually hit. Today, another asteroid the size of the Great <keyword id="6521374" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pyramid-of-Giza">Pyramid of Giza</keyword> is going to skim by.  Point being, these ‘near misses’ have become all too common. NASA’s <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/asteroidwatch/">Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) tracks these celestial objects to monitor them — not out of fear of collisions. But, considering their frequency, scientists believe it’s only a matter of time before one of them gets pulled in by Earth’s gravity and plumments onto our planet’s surface. Inevitable The problem with asteroids, and the reason they need to be monitored, is because should they hit Earth, the resulting effects would be catastrophic. Danica Remy, the president B612, told <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/huge-asteroid-misses-earth-spotlights-threat-posed-space-rocks-ncna1040406">NBC News</a> that it’s only a matter of time before Earth gets hit by a mega asteroid. He added that the impact of such an asteroid would out do even the impact of a nuclear explosion. A scientist at the Cardiff University, Ian McDonald, also has similar views stating that “doomsday” asteroid hits aren’t confined to the past. “There are always rocks flying through space. Inevitably one of these will hit us and it will have pretty dramatic effects,” he shared on the <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-46181450">BBC's Today program</a>. Even Neil deGrasse Tyson, the American scientist who has made his career explaining physics to the layman, also believes that eventually, the end of the world is probably going to be due a gigantic asteroid hit. "It is an intriguing and under-appreciated fact that asteroids and comets may have been the bringers of life, if not the ingredients of life, but perhaps even life itself. And yet, they can also serve as harbingers of doom for the very life that they brought to the planet," said <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAXUAJC2cqU">Tyson during his podcast</a>, Cosmic Queries: Asteroids and Comets. But, here’s the thing. Anything like the 7.5 mile wide asteroid that hit Earth and took out the dinosaurs hasn’t been spotted on any radar. According to NASA, at least 95% of asteroids have been catalogued and none of pose a direct threat to Earth. But that doesn’t mean they’re completely benign. They might not wipe out Earth but some of them do have the power to destroy entire cities.

However, there has been some news on the celestial and supernatural fronts that UBS's <keyword id="1738334" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Art-Cashin">Art Cashin</keyword> notes this morning.
Cashin, who usually writes about market and economic events, dedicates a huge section of today's Cashin's Comments to prophecies and asteroids.
First, he writes about the Pope and St. Malachy:
First Nostradamus, Then The Mayans And Now Saint Malachy – The Pope's announcement of his resignation from the Papacy has awakened new interests in the supposed Prophecies of St. Malachy. Malachy was born in Ireland around 1094 in, or around, Armagh, Ireland. He was canonized the first Irish saint by Pope Clement III in 1190 A.D.
Malachy was an Irish monk, who, on a visit to Rome was said to have had a vision of all the future popes. He catalogued each one with a descriptive Latin phrase and reportedly entrusted it to Pope Innocent II in 1140. There was little, if any, mention of the prophecies for the next 400 years.
In 1590, a Benedictine monk "discovered" them and published them five years later. The reason that Malachy's prophecies have re-flourished is that proponents claim Malachy indicated that the current Pontiff, Benedict XVI is the "next to last pope". Adherents say the next pope will be known as Peter the Roman and his reign will end in massive tribulation.
I guess folks need something to worry about now that we know that the Mayans miscalculated. Meanwhile, I'll keep an eye on Friday's asteroid.

Nothing To Worry About They Assure Us – Here's a bit on the incoming asteroid by Ken Kremer in "Universe Today":
Our home planet is due for a record setting space encounter on Friday (Feb. 15) of this week, when a space rock roughly half a football field wide skirts very close by Earth at break neck speed and well inside the plethora of hugely expensive communications and weather satellites that ring around us in geosynchronous orbit.
“There is no possibility of an Earth impact” by the Near Earth Asteroid (NEO) known as 2012 DA 14, said Don Yeomans, NASA’s foremost asteroid expert at a media briefing. Well that’s good news for us – but a little late for the dinosaurs.
At its closest approach in less than 4 days, the 45 meter (150 feet) wide Asteroid 2012 DA14 will zoom by within an altitude of 27,700 kilometers (17,200 miles). That is some 8000 km (5000 miles) inside the ring of geosynchronous satellites, but far above most Earth orbiting satellites, including the 6 person crew currently working aboard the International Space Station.
Although the likelihood of a satellite collision is extremely remote, NASA is actively working with satellite providers to inform them of the space rocks path.
The razor thin close shave takes place at about 2:24 p.m. EST (11:24 a.m. PST and 1924 UTC) as the asteroid passes swiftly by at a speed of about 7.8 kilometers per second (17,400 MPH)- or about 8 times the speed of a rifle bullet. For some perspective, it will be only about 1/13th of the distance to the moon at its closest.
“Asteroid 2012 DA14 will make a very close Earth approach, traveling rapidly from South to North and be moving at about two full moons per minute,” said Yeomans, who manages NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. “That’s very fast for a celestial object.
No known asteroid has traveled this close to earth in recorded history. Let's hope the slide rule guys have it nailed.
Assuming this asteroid does in fact miss us, it looks like it'll continue to be a pretty quiet week.
