<keyword id="19896016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-delhi" source="keywords">New Delhi</keyword>, <keyword id="20848502" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-fund-distributors" source="keywords">Mutual fund distributors</keyword> will now have the opportunity to receive trail commissions from <keyword id="20030502" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="asset-management-companies" source="keywords">Asset Management Companies</keyword> (AMCs) for assets transferred by an investor from one distributor to another. This change follows numerous requests from Mutual Fund Distributors (MFDs) to review the current AMFI Registration Number (ARN) transfer norms. These norms currently prevent AMCs from paying trail commissions to the new distributor when an investor transfers their assets to a new <keyword id="20094258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mfd" source="keywords">MFD</keyword>. In a communication to its members on Tuesday, <keyword id="20090034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="keywords">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in India (Amfi) permitted AMCs to pay trail commission to distributors in case a client transfers his assets from one distributor to another. However, AMCs can only pay trail commission after cooling off period of six months from the date of transfer of assets by investors. "In respect of change in distributor/ ARN code initiated by the investor, the AMCs may consider making payment of trail commission to the transferee distributor after a cooling off period of six months from the change of distributor code in the unitholder database," the industry body said. Further, It said that the payment of commission to the new (transferee) distributor would be based on the lower of the commission rate of the transferor and the transferee distributor. The mutual fund body further clarified that apart from trail commission, no other payments of any kind, including incentives, will be made regarding changes in the distributor. The industry body Amfi noted that the current ARN rule was introduced over a decade ago to curb certain market practices prevailing then, which may no longer be prevalent, and also since the transferee mutual fund distributor provides the same level of support and service to the concerned investors on the transferred assets.

Focused <keyword id="19929240" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-funds" source="keywords">mutual funds</keyword>, which invest in a concentrated portfolio of <keyword id="19905382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stocks" source="keywords">stocks</keyword>, are gaining traction among investors with the <keyword id="22748135" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="asset-base" source="keywords">asset base</keyword> of the category growing to Rs 1.43 lakh crore in three months ended June 2024, marking an increase of 31% from a year ago. Interestingly, some of the focused funds offered by the mutual fund houses such as <keyword id="22748136" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Invesco-India-Focused-Fund" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Invesco India Focused Fund" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Invesco India Focused Fund">Invesco India Focused Fund</keyword>, Mahindra Manulife Focused Fund, JM Focused Fund, and <keyword id="19896378" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc" source="keywords">HDFC</keyword> Focused 30 Fund delivered a remarkable return of 40-60% in the past year, industry data showed. Focused funds are a type of mutual fund where the fund manager selects a concentrated portfolio of stocks, typically limited to a maximum of 30 due to regulatory constraints. This requires the fund manager to be highly skilled in stock selection, as they need to identify the best investment opportunities across the market without bias toward any specific market cap or sector. According to data from the <keyword id="20090034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="keywords">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in India (Amfi), the assets under management (AUM) of the focused funds were at Rs 1.43 lakh crore in the June quarter 2024-25 as compared to Rs 1.09 lakh crore in April-June FY24. This growth highlights the appeal of focused funds as an alternative to portfolio management services (<keyword id="19950020" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pms" source="keywords">PMS</keyword>), especially with recent tax changes that make PMS less attractive due to higher costs and tax implications, Feroze Azeez, Deputy CEO, of Anand Rathi Wealth Ltd, said. "With the increase in taxation on both small-term capital gain tax and long-term capital gain tax, PMS portfolios are expected to see a drop in post-tax returns. For example, a PMS portfolio generating a pre-tax return of 14 % could see post-tax returns drop from 11.73 % to 11.29 %. This shift could lead to fund managers churning portfolios less frequently, which in turn will be affecting returns for investors," he added. Focused funds follow a similar concentrated portfolio strategy where the fund manager picks the top stocks and offers flexibility across market caps. Thus, becoming a more attractive option for investors looking to optimize their returns. Industry experts recommend investing in focused funds through systematic investment plans (SIPs) as a smart strategy in the current market environment of sector rotation and high valuations. Since these funds invest in a small number of stocks, SIPs can help reduce risk by spreading out investments over time. Overall, there are 31 focused schemes offered by different mutual fund houses in the category. These schemes have given returns of 19-60% in the last one year. In terms of returns, smaller funds have performed exceptionally well. The Invesco India Focused Fund delivered a remarkable return of over 60% in the past year, while Mahindra Manulife Focused Fund provided around 50% returns and JM Focused Fund offered a return of 45% during the period. With a corpus of Rs 1,552 crore as of June 2024, Mahindra Manulife Focused Fund has consistently performed well, securing the second rank for 1, 2, and 3-year periods. The fund delivered returns of 50%, 32%, and 26% over these periods, respectively. HDFC Focused 30 Fund achieved the top rank over the 3 years with a return of 28.63 %, while JM Focused Fund secured the third rank with a 25 % return during the same period. "The success of focused funds underscores the importance of skilled fund management and strategic stock selection," an industry expert said. Focused funds opt for a more targeted strategy rather than the broad diversification typical of traditional mutual funds. This approach helps fund managers make investments in a carefully selected group of stocks, reflecting their strongest investment beliefs. The concentrated nature of these portfolios requires careful selection of each stock, as the fund's performance heavily depends on these choices. Although these funds hold a limited number of stocks, they are structured to be sufficiently diversified to effectively manage risk. Overall, the assets of the equity mutual funds rose to Rs 27.6 lakh crore in June 2024 from Rs 17.43 lakh crore in June 2023.

Focused MFs' asset base rises 31% to Rs 1.43 lakh cr in June qtr; up to 60% returns last year

<keyword id="19896016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-delhi" source="keywords">New Delhi</keyword>, Equity mutual funds experienced a net inflow of Rs 21,780 crore in January, making it the highest monthly infusion in nearly two years, propelled by investors' continued preference for small-cap funds. In comparison, an inflow of around Rs 17,000 crore was seen in the category in December, according to the data released by the <keyword id="20090034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="keywords">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> (<keyword id="6359050" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amfi" source="Orion">AMFI</keyword>) on Thursday. The flow in January was the highest since March 2022, when equity-oriented mutual funds witnessed an inflow of Rs 28,463 crore. Also, the latest flow marks the 35th consecutive month of net inflows in equity funds. Barring value fund, all categories experienced inflow in equity segments. The category was aided by fund collection to the tune of Rs 4,805 crore in thematic funds, followed by Rs 3,257 crore in small-cap funds and Rs 3,039 crore in multi-cap funds. The highlight of this month was the fund flows into the large-cap category at Rs 1,287 crore, which was at the highest-level in more than 13 months. "With midcaps at 15 per cent and small caps at 20 per cent premiums, investors are realising the considerable valuation gap with the large-cap segment, and accordingly making adjustments to their investments. "Though small-cap funds garnered greater than Rs 3,000 crore of net flows for the fourth consecutive month, the quantum was lower by Rs 600 crore on a month-on-month basis," <keyword id="20504519" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gopal-kavalireddi" source="keywords">Gopal Kavalireddi</keyword>, Vice President of Research at FYERS, said. Apart from equities, debt-oriented schemes witnessed a net inflow of Rs 76,469 crore in January after withdrawing funds in the preceding two months. The segment had witnessed a net outflow of Rs 75,560 crore in December and Rs 4,707 crore in November. Additionally, hybrid schemes saw an inflow of Rs 20,637 crore. Overall, the mutual fund industry has witnessed an inflow of Rs 1.23 lakh crore in the month under review as compared to an outflow of Rs 40,685 crore in December. The strong inflow pushed the mutual fund industry's assets under management to Rs 52.74 lakh crore in January-end as compared to Rs 50.78 lakh crore at the end of December.

New Delhi, Strong, incessant net flows and favourable market conditions propped up the assets base for the small-cap mutual fund category to cross Rs 2 lakh crore mark in November-end, a sharp surge of 69 per cent from a year earlier. On a month-on-month basis, the Assets Under Management (AUM) of the category grew 10 per cent to Rs 1.99 lakh crore, data with the <keyword id="826589" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="Orion">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in India (AMFI) showed. Since the fourth quarter of 2019-20, the AUM for the category has seen a phenomenal rise, due to favourable market movement, along with record net inflows. Small-cap funds attracted Rs 37,178 in this year (till November). This includes Rs 3,699 crore last month and a record fund infusion of Rs 4,495 crore in October. On the other hand, the large-cap category saw a pull out of Rs 2,688 crore in the first 11 months of this year. "A few fund houses have limited the inflows in their small-cap funds over the last quarter given the sharp rise in flows and concerns on valuations," <keyword id="112974" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="morningstar-india" source="Orion">Morningstar India</keyword> had mentioned in its September quarterly report. Going by the AMFI data, the asset base of the small-cap mutual fund hit its peak of Rs 2.2 lakh crore at the end of November. Additionally, investor accounts in the category, too, climbed a staggering 62 lakh folios to 1.6 crore in November from 97.52 lakh a year-earlier. This shows that investors have become more inclined toward small-cap funds. Under Sebi's rule, in small-cap mutual funds, fund managers are required to invest at least 65 per cent of their portfolios in small-cap stocks. <keyword id="2252616" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="g-pradeepkumar" source="Orion">G Pradeepkumar</keyword>, CEO, <keyword id="6536298" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="union-asset-management-company" source="Orion">Union Asset Management Company</keyword>, suggested that investors stagger their investments in small- and mid-cap funds in view of the possibility of short-term volatility. Overall, the AUM of the 42-player mutual fund industry reached Rs 49.04 lakh crore in November-end from Rs 40.37 lakh crore in November 2022, suggesting a gain of 22 per cent.

Consistent inflows push small-cap funds AUM past Rs 2 lakh cr mark in Nov

The month-on-month net inflows for <keyword id="6391506" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EQUITY" source="Orion">equity</keyword> mutual funds came down by 42.6 per cent to Rs 8,898.25 crore in July 2022, as per the figures released by the <keyword id="826589" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="Orion">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in India (AMFI). The total net inflow for the mutual fund industry as a whole last month was Rs 23,604.92 crore as against a net outflow of Rs 69,852.94 crore in June 2022, said AMFI. According to AMFI, the net inflows for equity mutual funds last month was Rs 8,898.25 crore down from Rs 15,497.76 crore logged in June 2022. As on July 31, the average net asset under management (AUM) of the industry was Rs 37,74,802.90 crore as against a figure of Rs 35,64,090.20 crore as on June 30. "July seems to be month where investors has taken some profits off as markets went up, the net sales in equity has plummeted to Rs 8,898 crore Vs. Rs 15,497 crore, momentum was coming down all through last few months as the markets were correcting but July was a steep fall and excluding SIP numbers, we might have witnessed actual net negative sales in July," <keyword id="222480" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="akhil-chaturvedi" source="Orion">Akhil Chaturvedi</keyword>, Chief Business Officer, <keyword id="126141" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="motilal-oswal-amc" source="Orion">Motilal Oswal AMC</keyword>, said. Equity MF net inflows fall sharply by 42.6% in July

New Delhi, Jan 30 () Industry body Amfi on Thursday said it has roped in cricketing icons Sachin Tendulkar and M S Dhoni for their 'Mutual Funds Sahi Hai' campaign that aims to create awareness about the financial product as a preferred investment option.
 This is the first time when the industry has engaged celebrities to promote its ambitious investor awareness campaign, which was launched in March 2017.
 "Sachin Tendulkar and M S Dhoni evoke unstinted trust and high dependability, and their longer-term orientation in their respective cricketing careers, has been akin to retail investors having equally longer-term approach towards investment," Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) Chairman Nilesh Shah said in a statement.
 Longer-term approach be it, in cricketing career or in mutual fund investments can deliver rich dividends be it for cricketers or investors, alike," he added.
 Amfi chief executive N S Venkatesh said this is the right time to take the conversation with retail investors across the country to the next level by engaging the cricketing icons.
 Currently, there are 44-players in the mutual fund industry, which manages assets to the tune of over Rs 26 lakh crore.
 "I am excited to be associated with the mutual funds sahi hai initiative, through Amfi, to help create awareness about mutual funds. Discipline and longer-term approach is the cornerstone towards achieving success, be it in any sport and likewise in personal investing," Tendulkar said.
 Dhoni said, "I take great pride in being associated with the mutual fund sahi hai campaign. Having goal-based approach, starting early, staying disciplined and not being fazed by volatility, are the four mantras, I have always followed, be it in my cricketing career or in personal money management."
 Earlier in 2017, markets regulator Sebi had allowed celebrities to endorse the instrument at industry level in order to increase awareness about mutual funds as a financial product. SP MR

Thus far this year, domestic gold prices have grown by 23%, outperforming benchmark indices like Nifty and Sensex by a mile, which have gone up by 9.85% and 8.86%, respectively. The growth in gold loan disbursal rates month on month this year could also put Nifty and Sensex’s growth to shame. In just September 2024, gold loans grew an astounding 51%, up from 40.9% in August, 30.5% in June, and just 14.8% in March. <h2>Hey, wait up for me, says <keyword id="23953567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="las" source="keywords">LAS</keyword></h2>In lockstep with the elder, gold loan sibling, advances against shares and bonds have also been inching up since 2022. Data from RBI (Reserve Bank of India) notes that as of September 2022, the outstanding quantum of loans that were taken against shares (LAS) and bonds stood at Rs 7,397.94 crores. This inched up to Rs 7,764 crore in September 2023. Come 2024, and it looked like this was LAS’ time to shine. Loans swiftly skyrocketed, with outstanding loans in this category going up from Rs 8,492 crore in March 2022 to a staggering Rs 9,546 crore at the end of September 2024. Naturally, the smoke of LAS has its fire in the record inflows that Indians are pouring into the stock market and mutual funds month on month. Per AMFI (<keyword id="20090034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="keywords">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in India), the net AUM (assets under management) of India’s mutual fund industry grew to Rs 67,25,614.61 crores in October 2024, up from Rs 67,09,259.24 crores in September 2024. Even the number of retail mutual fund folios, which include equity, hybrid, and solution-oriented mutual funds, burgeoned to 17,23,52,296 in October, as compared to 16,81,61,366 in September. The same goes for stock investments in India, where the number of new demat accounts that are added every month just simply refuses to climb down. As of last month, total demat accounts in the country stood at 17.9 crore, which is more than the entire population of full-fledged nations like Japan (12.45 crore), Russia (14.38 crore), and Bangladesh (17.3 crore). In fact, since February this year, the monthly growth of LAS has been hitting double digits. From 11.3% in March to 21.6% in May to 26.8% in August, growth in LAS has been exceptional, hitting 22.9% in September this year. For context, monthly growth in the LAS segment was at a mere 5% in September 2023. <h2>What's driving the growth?</h2>It's a win-win for both the bank and the customer. Customers love them because LAS is available at a lower interest rate compared to unsecured personal loans. You can get a loan at an interest rate of anywhere between 9 and 12% by pledging your gold, MF units, or shares. Compare this to over 10-28% rates, which is the range where unsecured personal loans charge interest. Banks love <keyword id="827883" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="secured-loans" source="Orion">secured loans</keyword> since they are well-secured. In case you default on paying back, the bank can sell off your gold, shares, or mutual fund units to recover the amount. This takes a lot of stress off the banks, which are already dealing with secured loans’ riskier sibling-unsecured lending. High NPAs (non-performing assets) and non-payments in the unsecured borrowing space have already put RBI on red alert, which is why the apex bank is tightening the screws on unsecured lending, which was well on its way to becoming a ticking time bomb. As a result, credit growth has moderated to 12.8% YoY in October, as against the 19.3% rise recorded in the year-ago period. Yet it's not like the banks won't feel the heat. Analysts at Nomura note that personal loan delinquencies in India that have been overdue by over 90 days rose to 5.1% in the last financial year, as opposed to just 3.9% in the year prior. <h2>How does it work?</h2>Both these loans work on a similar principle: Your loan amount is equal to a certain percentage of the actual market value of your asset. This is known as the <keyword id="20051485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ltv" source="keywords">LTV</keyword> (loan-to-value ratio). In the case of gold and debt mutual funds, RBI mandates that this LTV be about 75-80%. So, for every Rs 100 of gold or debt mutual fund unit you pledge, your maximum loan amount cannot exceed Rs 80. If you pledge gold, which has a market value of Rs 10 lakh, you can take a loan of up to Rs 8,00,000. In the case of shares and mutual fund units, this limit is set at 50%. So, your shares worth Rs 5,00,000 can only get you a loan worth Rs 2,50,000. But the bright side? You can continue earning returns on your investments and pay interest only on the amount you use, since this loan works as an overdraft facility. <h2>Super safe, you say?</h2>Interest rates on both of these loans are very much dependent on the market value of the asset, which wildly fluctuates on a day-to-day basis. So, in case the value of your asset falls, you’ll have to keep a margin or more of the same asset in order to continue with the loan and maintain the LTV balance. Failure to do so could mean the bank can even sell off your asset. Says financial planner Nema Chaya Buch. “Yes, LAS offers easy availability of funds since these loans come with a lower interest rate as compared to personal loans. Also, you continue to earn average returns of 10–13% on your equity investments. But the downside is, in case of emergency, those pledged securities cannot be sold. Also, if the equity market goes down, then the bank may ask for additional collateral. Raghvendra Nath, MD, Ladderup Wealth Management notes that taking a LAS is best when the value of your securities has appreciated significantly. “This allows you to maximize the loan amount based on your collateral while also addressing financial needs without having to liquidate your investment portfolio. However, there are notable disadvantages to consider. The market risk is significant; a substantial decline in market value could lead to margin calls, which may incur fees and charges if there are delays or prepayments, ultimately increasing the effective cost of borrowing. Furthermore, failure to make timely payments could result in the loss of your assets.”. Umesh Mohanan, ED &amp; CEO, of Indel Money, cautions that one should have a sufficient quantity of gold to get the loan amount one wants. "According to the current RBI rules, the loan applicant/borrower can draw up to 75% of the total market value of the collateral/gold jewellery. So, always carry a sufficient quantity of gold based on one’s loan requirement. “The most important thing is that the valuation of the gold depends on the purity of the gold. If the borrower pledges gold with higher purity, such as 24 carats or 22 carats, he will get the maximum loan amount," he adds.

New Delhi, Dec 10 () The mutual fund industry has added more than 2.6 lakh folios in November taking the total tally to 8.65 crore, which suggests investors' understanding about market risks associated with such schemes.
 In comparison, the industry had added 6 lakh folios in October, 3.45 lakh in September, 4.8 lakh in August and more than 10 lakh in July.
 Folios are numbers designated to individual investor accounts. An investor can have multiple folios.
 According to data from Association of Mutual Funds in India, the number of folios with 44 fund houses rose to 8,65,18,585 at the end of November from 8,62,56,880 in the end of October, registering a gain of 2,61,705 folios.
 Industry experts said the addition of folios indicates investors' understanding about market risks associated with the mutual fund schemes.
 However, the pace of growth in folio numbers has dropped last month compared to October mainly due to lower influx in equities
 Number of folios under the equity and equity-linked saving schemes rose by 1.2 lakh to 6.21 crore in November-end, which is much lower than 3 lakh added in the preceding month.
 The debt-oriented scheme folios count went up by 5.4 lakh to 70.12 lakh.
 Within the debt category, liquid funds continued to top the chart in terms of number of folios at 17.45 lakh, followed by low duration fund at 9.7 lakh fund houses.
 Mutual fund houses witnessed an overall inflow of Rs 54,419 crore last month as compared to Rs 1.33 lakh crore in October.
 Among debt-oriented schemes, overnight funds -- invest in securities with a maturity of one day-- received flows worth about Rs 20,650 crore, the highest among the fixed-income segment last month.
 Net inflows into equity mutual fund schemes dropped to Rs 1,690 crore in November from Rs 6,015 crore in the preceding month.
 The 44-player industry's assets under management (AUM) rose to an all time high of Rs 27.04 lakh crore by November end from Rs 26.33 lakh crore in October-end. SP SHW

Mumbai, The share of women investors in mutual funds has increased from 15 per cent in March 2017 to nearly 21 per cent in December 2023, according the latest data of Amfi (Association of Mutual Funds). The overall asset under management in mutual funds crossed the Rs 50 lakh crore-mark in February this year as a large number of passive investors are flocking to mutual funds to save and earn more. The Amfi data showed the share of women investors in mutual funds increased from 15 per cent in March 2017 to nearly 21 per cent in December 2023. This pace of growth was more prominent in the hinterland versus the urban centres during the period. The share of women folios and assets in B-30 cities has increased from 15 per cent to 18 per cent and from 17 per cent to 28 per cent, respectively, the data showed. The report, prepared by <keyword id="19898320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crisil" source="keywords">Crisil</keyword> for Amfi and released by Sebi chairperson <keyword id="19922107" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="madhabi-puri-buch" source="keywords">Madhabi Puri Buch</keyword>, further said that almost 50 per cent of women investors fall in the 25-44 age group as against around 45 per cent for overall set of individual investors. Goa boasts the highest share of women in the mutual fund industry at 40 per cent, followed by northeastern states with high 30s percentages. <keyword id="20911260" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandigarh-maharashtra" source="keywords">Chandigarh, Maharashtra</keyword>, and <keyword id="19896016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-delhi" source="keywords">New Delhi</keyword> also have over 30 per cent share of women in assets under management. Most female MF investors continue to invest through the regular plan route and stay invested for longer when investing through a mutual fund distributor. The number of women MF distributors has also increased and was near the 42,000-mark as of December 2023 with their total AUM (assets under management) of over Rs 1 lakh crore. New Delhi, Mar 30 () Easing compliance burden on mutual fund houses and alternative investment funds (AIFs), Sebi on Monday extended the deadline till July 1 for implementation of stewardship code, which is applicable for investments in listed equities. The code was to come into force from April 1. Sebi said the decision has been taken after it received requests from the Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI) and the Indian Association of Alternative Investment Funds (IAAIF) for extension of the deadline for implementation of the code. The associations said the prevailing situation resulting from the coronavirus pandemic makes it challenging to effectively monitor and intervene at appropriate situations with the management of the investee companies and engage with the boards of the investee companies. After taking into consideration the representations, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), in a circular, said it has decided to extend the implementation of the stewardship code to July 1, 2020. The markets regulator had mandated all mutual funds and alternative investment funds in the country to adopt a stewardship code. Under the code, institutional investors need to monitor investor companies and intervene in these firms in case of any requirement through meetings with the management. Also, they need to have a policy on voting and disclose the voting behaviour. Stewardship code is a principles-based framework that assists institutional investors in fulfilling their responsibilities to help them protect and enhance the value of their clients and beneficiaries. Adherence to the code by institutional investors will enhance the corporate governance of the investee companies. Stewardship obligations are becoming more important due to increased institutional investor ownership of various companies and a large portion of such institutional investors, directly or indirectly, represent public funds. Globally, Britain was the first to recognise stewardship obligations way back in 2010, followed by Japan and Malaysia. SP RVK
