Asian Paints CEO's salary has nearly doubled in last five years while the company average was 50%

New Delhi, Jul 15 () Asian Paints sees the near term outlook as "bleak" following COVID-19 disruption, but going forward it is optimistic and is focusing on medium to long term prospects, according to the company's annual report. Paint being a discretionary spend item, there is a likelihood of customers putting their paint requirements on hold. Moreover, the real estate market is unlikely to recover soon and hence the industry would be looking for increased focus from the government in pushing infrastructure investments, Asian Paints said in its annual report for 2019-20. "The outlook in the near term looks bleak due to the spread of COVID-19 affecting our operations across units. However, as we focus on the medium to long term, we are optimistic that our units now have the intrinsic strength and scale to withstand the storm and emerge stronger to launch into a new trajectory in the coming year," Asian Paints said. The domestic paint industry, which consists of - decorative and industrial paint - segment is estimated at Rs 50,000 crore. The decorative paint segment comprising categories such as exterior wall paints, interior wall paints, wood finishes, enamels, undercoats such as primers, putties among others constitutes more than 75 per cent of the paint market. While the rest 25 per cent is from the industrial paint segment, which comprises of automotive coatings, marine coatings, packaging coatings, powder coatings, protective coatings, floor coatings and other general industrial coatings, it said. The company said that the overall demand conditions remained challenging during the course of FY 2019-20 due to the tough operating environment experienced by a large part of the domestic economy. "In general, paint demand mirrors the overall GDP growth in the economy. Hence, as soon as the overall demand in the economy improves, the demand conditions for the paint industry would also witness improvement," it said. The paint industry would also have to wait for the return of the migrant workforce to support the demand-generating sectors such as real estate and infrastructure development, it said. "The government's push on infrastructure development will be critical to spur the demand from these segments. At the same time, given the overall uncertainty in business conditions, raw material prices, as well as exchange rates, are expected to exhibit increased volatility. They would need to be critically monitored to cushion the impact on profitability," it added. In FY 2019-20, Asian Paints reported a standalone net sales of Rs 17,194.1 crore registering a growth of 4.9 per cent. Besides India, Asian Paints has operations in 14 countries across four regions of the world – South Asia and Indonesia, the Middle East, South Pacific and Africa. Raw material prices have been pushed up due to the high crude oil prices. Note that half of the material used by paint companies are crude oil derivatives. Asian Paints reported a decline in net profit to ₹595 crore in September, below analysts’ expectations. "Steep inflation seen in raw material prices, since the beginning of this calendar year, has been phenomenal and has impacted gross margins across all businesses in the quarter," said Amit Syngle, managing director and chief executive of Asian Paints in a statement to an exchange on October 21. Adding to it, global chip shortage could impact supply of tinting machines which are key for paint dealers. The chip shortage could <a href="https://www.livemint.com/market/mark-to-market/paint-manufacturers-may-face-disruption-from-chip-shortage-11632765366605.html">reportedly</a> impact the supply of tinting machines and the expansion plans of paint companies. These machines help shops create different shades of paints within the store, in line with the requirement of customers. Dealers who use tinting machines do not have to hold large amounts of shades in stock. “We expect delays in (the supply of) tinting machines to remain for a few quarters for most paint companies. We expect less impact on top two companies, Asian Paints and Berger Paints, as they already have a high tinting machine penetration compared to smaller peers," said analysts at Edelweiss Securities, <a href="https://www.livemint.com/market/mark-to-market/paint-manufacturers-may-face-disruption-from-chip-shortage-11632765366605.html">reportedly</a>. Paint makers stress over high raw material costs and fewer tinting machines even as festive demand picks up

New Delhi, Jan 15 () The Competition Commission of India has ordered a probe against Asian Paints for allegedly hindering the entry of JSW Paints by virtue of its dominance in the market for manufacture and sale of decorative paints.
 The order came after JSW Paints filed a complaint alleging that Asian Paints threatened various dealers in Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu from dealing with JSW Paints.
 "The Commission is of the view that evidence provided by JSW Paints is prima-facie sufficient to indicate that Asian Paints has denied access to the distribution channels in the relevant market to JSW Paints by threatening and coercing such dealers through various means," the fair trade regulator said.
 It added that Asian Paints, "prima-facie", appears to be in contravention of provisions of the Competition Act.
 JSW Paints alleged that the dealers faced punitive action at the hands of Asian Paints if they continued to deal with JSW Paints. It was also alleged that Asian Paints threatened the dealers to discontinue their supplies, and disallowed discretionary discounts, among others.
 These restraints appear to be in the nature of exclusive supply agreement and refusal to deal, JSW Paints alleged.
 Besides, JSW Paints stated that Asian Paints has always maintained the highest market share and there have been no new players in the relevant market in the past 10 years.
 The regulator noted that denial of market access is a "severe form of abuse of dominant position".
 "In the facts of the present case, the Commission notes that the alleged conduct of Asian Paints of threatening and pressurising dealers as highlighted by JSW Paints prima-facie brings out that Asian Paints has attempted to prevent JSW Paints in establishing a presence in the relevant market," CCI said.
 It also said "the alleged restrictions on dealers not to deal with JSW Paints or any other company manufacturing paints can create barriers for suppliers of paints, who compete with these suppliers besides not allowing the benefit of better prices to the consumers."
 Accordingly, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in its order passed on Wednesday directed the director general "to complete the investigation and submit the investigation report within a period of 60 days from the receipt of this order". SRS HRS

Giving wings to its overseas expansion, paint major <keyword id="106317" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asian-Paints">Asian Paints</keyword> Limited has forayed into the Indonesian market by launching PT Asian Paints Indonesia. The new company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of <keyword id="2704330" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Berger-International-Limited">Berger International Limited</keyword>, Singapore, which in turn is an indirect subsidiary of the Asian Paints. 
	 
	“We will also set up a manufacturing plant with a capacity of 24,550 ton in the country. However, this will be executed only after the company receives the requisite regulatory approvals,” the company told the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in a letter dated January 29, 2015. 
	 
	The company has also applied for another approval for incorporating another company in Indonesia. “We have also put in a second application for investment approval with Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal (BKPM), the Investment Coordinating Board of Republic of Indonesia, for incorporating a second company in Indonesia which will engage in import of finished goods including decorative paints, other coatings and related items for sale in Indonesia. BKPM has issued a principal license approving the said investment application,” added the company. 
	 It should be noted that other paint companies have been looking at expansion in foreign markets especially in the Southeast Asian markets. Interestingly, earlier this month, another paint major, <keyword id="1430790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nerolac-Paints">Nerolac Paints</keyword> has entered into a joint venture with Maharaja Group in Sri Lanka.
