New Delhi, Feb 10 () State-owned BHEL on Monday said it has commissioned two units of Kameng Hydroelectric Project (HEP) in Arunachal Pradesh. Kameng HEP is a run-of-the river scheme which will utilise the flow from Bichom and Tenga rivers. "Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has successfully commissioned two units of 4x150 mw Kameng Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh," the state-owned company said, adding that "this is the largest unit rating (150 mw) for hydro power generating sets in the state of Arunachal Pradesh." Being developed by North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO), the greenfield hydro project is located in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. BHEL's scope in the project comprises design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of four 150 mw vertical francis turbines and matching synchronous generators, transformers, control and monitoring (SCADA) system along with associated auxiliaries. The equipment have been supplied by BHEL's manufacturing units at Bhopal, Jhansi, Rudrapur, and Bengaluru, while erection and commissioning on site was carried out by the company's power sector - eastern region division, Kolkata. BHEL commissions two hydro power generating units in Arunachal Pradesh

The <keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> has found wreckage of the AN-32 aircraft that went missing on June 3 with 13 people on board. Not giving much details about the survivors the Air Force tweeted that efforts are on to find those affected by the tragedy. The Air Force added that it would continue to communicate about any developments, establishing the location of the survivors.  Massive search operation for AN-32 aircraft A massive search operation was conducted by for an Indian Air Force (<keyword id="6355075" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IAF">IAF</keyword>) AN-32 transport aircraft with 13 people onboard that went missing over <keyword id="46408" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arunachal-Pradesh">Arunachal Pradesh</keyword>. The IAF pressed into service a SU-30 jet fighter, C130 J, Mi17 and ALH helicopters to trace the missing Russian-origin transporter aircraft that was last seen on Monday afternoon. The searches were taking place along thickly forested routes between Assam's Jorhat and Mechuka advanced landing ground in <keyword id="6367693" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="arunachal">Arunachal</keyword> Pradesh. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) satellites -- CARTOSAT and RISAT -- were also taking images of the area. Five days after an Indian Air Force AN-32 aircraft went missing, the Arunachal Pradesh government engaged local village headmen in search operations on the ground even as the IAF announced a ₹5 lakh reward for any information about the ill-fated plane. To counter the massive construction and development on the Chinese side along the 1800 km border, India is fast equipping itself with sufficient 
 Strategic launch bases in Arunachal Pradesh for the <keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> (IAF). This strategic launch base is called an Advance Landing Ground or ALG. 
 
After activating IAF four Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) at Ziro, Along, Mechuka and Walong in Arunachal Pradesh, the IAF on August 19 th made yet another ALG-the 5th in the row in the North East region at Arunachal Pradesh itself. 
 
These ALGs act as transportation hubs during peace time and in case of contingencies like road closure, landslides, conflicts and war like situations the ALGs would act as launch bases for support of troops as well as replenishment of supplies. 
 
The ALGs got an impetus after state government and the forces witnessed massive construction and development on the Chinese side along the 1,080-km border. The area remains a bone of contention between the Indian and Chinese forces where the line of actual control acts as the de facto border. 
 The upgraded Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) at Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh was inaugurated by <keyword id="638723" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kiren-Rijiju">Kiren Rijiju</keyword>, MoS for Home Affairs in the presence of Air Marshal C Hari Kumar AVSM VM VSM, Air Officer Commanding-in-chief (AOC-in-C), Eastern Air Command on August 19. 
 
Apart from serving the strategic advantage, the ALG at Pasighat will facilitate air connectivity with rest of the country and give a huge fillip to tourism in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. 
 
A flypast by a formation of three Sukhoi-30 MKI Air Dominance Fighter aircraft, that took off from one of the forward Airbases was a highlight of the event. This was followed by a Su-30MKI also landing at the ALG. 
 
The touchdown by a frontline fighter jet of the IAF at the ALG is a 'historic first' in the predominantly hilly state of Arunachal Pradesh, which has several ALGs at varying altitudes. 
 
The new runway surface and other infrastructure built are similar to the other upgraded ALGs that have been inaugurated in the recent months. 
 Replete with facilities such as aprons for ground manouevering, <keyword id="735991" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-traffic-control-tower">Air Traffic Control Tower</keyword>, perimeter road and a security wall, the ALG will facilitate operations of fixed wing aircraft as well as helicopters of both civil and military operators. 
 
The ALG at Pasighat was taken over by the IAF in February 2010. Previously, it was small strip that was partly paved, partly grassy, and reinforced with perforated steel plates. It was utilized in the past for air maintenance sorties and casualty evacuation by the IAF. Commercial helicopter operations were also being undertaken from the helipads that existed earlier. 
 The <keyword id="54875" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airports-Authority-of-India">Airports Authority of India</keyword> (AAI) is also the process of setting up a civil terminal, the construction of which has yet to commence. Now the need of the hour is for all agencies to get together and make it happen. 
 It may be recalled that following a MoU between Government of Arunachal Pradesh and <keyword id="6369097" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Defence">Ministry of Defence</keyword> in June 2009, the IAF had embarked on an ambitious reconstruction plan to upgrade eight ALGs, including infrastructure development at an overall outlay of nearly Rs. 1,000 Crore. 
 
Two ALGs at Tuting and Tawang are expected to be ready by the year end, while the ALG at Vijaynagar would undertake for reconstruction as soon as the road connectivity between Miao and Vijaynagar is restored.

Countering China:
India readies the 5th ALG for IAF at Pasighat in Arunachal
Pradesh

India is building Asia’s longest bridge-‘<keyword id="3690249" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="The-Dhola-Sadiya-Bridge">The Dhola-Sadiya Bridge</keyword>’-over <keyword id="13243" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="River-Brahmaputra">River Brahmaputra</keyword> and is expected to be completed within seven months. Once completed, the bridge will reduce the travel time between <keyword id="6354915" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Assam">Assam</keyword> and <keyword id="46408" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arunachal-Pradesh">Arunachal Pradesh</keyword> by four hours. 
 
The bridge will be built at the tune of Rs 938 crore and after its completion, it will be of great use for defence purposes also and keeping in mind the passage of tanks and other army vehicles, the bridge is also being strengthened. So far, India lacks a bridge that is fortified for passage of tanks around Tinsukia from where troops can cross over to Arunachal Pradesh. The bridge will also reduce the time consumption for the armed forces to reach the border in Dibang and Anjaw via Teazpur. At present it takes about two days. 
 The compensation for the construction of the bridge has been approved by the <keyword id="335681" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Road-Ministry">road ministry</keyword>. 
 
The bridge is also important for connectivity as till date Arunachal Pradesh does not have a single operational airport and China has been building air strips on its side of the LAC. The bridge will come as a shot in arm for the military. 
 According to an official, the project will complete in the next seven to eight months. Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> has already visited the project and gone through the visual presentation of this project when he participated in the North Eastern Council meeting in Shillong early this year. 
 
Construction of this bridge in Assam was approved as a part of Rs 24,000 crore Arunachal Pradesh package to improve road connectivity in the border state.

Asia’s longest bridge is coming up on Brahmaputra, will reduce travel time by 4 hours

Researchers from the <keyword id="22456634" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Botanical-Survey-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Botanical Survey of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Botanical Survey of India">Botanical Survey of India</keyword> (BSI) have discovered a <keyword id="22456632" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-plant-species" source="keywords">new plant species</keyword> from a wildlife sanctuary in <keyword id="19915575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arunachal-Pradesh" source="keywords">Arunachal Pradesh</keyword>, officials said. '<keyword id="22456633" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Phlogacanthus-Sudhansusekharii" source="keywords">Phlogacanthus Sudhansusekharii</keyword>', the plant species recently discovered from <keyword id="19949553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Itanagar" source="keywords">Itanagar</keyword> Wildlife Sanctuary in Papum Pare district, belongs to the family 'Acanthaceae' and the 'Phlogacanthus' genus, they said. The species is named to honor Dr Sudhansu Sekhar Dash, a scientist at the BSI, for his "significant contribution" to plant and ecological research in the Indian Himalayan region, the BSI officials said. The detailed research paper on the new species has been published by the authors Samrat Goswami and Rohan Maity in the Indian Journal of Forestry. The genus 'Phlogacanthus' comprises 13 species in India and is spread over mainly the northeastern and eastern Himalayan states, they said. "The newly described species is closely allied to Phlogacanthus Guttatus (Wall) Nees, but differ in various morphological characters, mainly in its shape and size of calyx, staminodes and strikingly different corona colour," a BSI official said. Chief Minister Pema Khandu has expressed delight over the development. "The biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh is wide &amp; varied. In addition to the findings of new flora, researchers from @bsi_moefcc have identified a new plant species, named Phlogacanthus sudhansusekharii, in the Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary," Khandu said in a post in X. "This discovery reminds us of our rich natural heritage &amp; our responsibility to preserve it for future generations," he added. This was followed by three earthquakes in Nepal in the morning measuring up to 5.2 on the Richter Scale. The first 4.8 tremor was felt at 6:14am in Kathmandu, followed by two tremors in Naubise in Dhading at 6:29am and 6:40am. The intensity of the earthquake in India, however, is disputed. The <keyword id="55209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Meteorological-Department">Indian Meteorological Department</keyword> measured it as 5.8 on the Richter Scale but the US Geological Survey (USGS) <a href="https://twitter.com/USGSBigQuakes/status/1120787800641527808">asserts</a> that the magnitude of the earthquake was actually around 6.1. Regardless of the numbers, USGS <a href="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us70003axc/executive?utm_medium=social">predicts</a> that there is ‘low likelihood’ of resultant casualties and damages from the quake. Xinhua — China's official state news agency — <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-04/24/c_138004455.htm">reported</a> that the earthquake in India was also felt in Tibet, one of India’s neighbours. Myanmar and Bhutan, two other countries that share a border with Arunachal Pradesh, have reported any such activity.
