Meerut, Actor <keyword id="19935807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="arun-govil" source="keywords">Arun Govil</keyword>, who has been fielded by the BJP from the <keyword id="21103234" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="meerut-lok-sabha" source="keywords">Meerut Lok Sabha</keyword> seat, said he has spent 17 years of his life in the city and was looking forward to serving the people there. The actor, who became a household name after essaying the role of Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar's "Ramayan", reached Meerut on Tuesday evening and held meetings with the local BJP leaders and office bearers. "I was born here (in Meerut) and spent my childhood here. The first 17 years of my life were spent in Meerut. I was a student of <keyword id="21103233" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sarasawati-shishu-mandir-school" source="keywords">Sarasawati Shishu Mandir School</keyword> after which I joined the Government Inter college," Govil told reporters after he arrived in the city. Asked what the people of Meerut can expect from him if he wins the election, he said, "Whatever I have done in my life till today was a form of service... This (MP) will be another form of service to the people." In response to a question regarding the Ram temple, Govil said after the consecration ceremony, the entire country and the world have become "rammay". He also praised Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> for his developmental work and said no one else can match him. After he arrived in Meerut, Govil along with party officials also went to Augharnath Temple, where he performed Jalabhishek of Lord Ashutosh. A large crowd gathered at the temple to catch a glimpse of Govil or take a selfie with him. Later, the BJP candidate reached the Martyrs' Memorial and paid tributes to the fallen soldiers. Govil, however, refused to comment on Congress leader <keyword id="20202422" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supriya-shrinate" source="keywords">Supriya Shrinate</keyword>'s alleged offensive remarks against actor <keyword id="19941210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kangana-ranaut" source="keywords">Kangana Ranaut</keyword> who has been fielded by the BJP from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi Lok Sabha seat. "Don't ask me... Ask her (Ranaut)," Govil said.

By Radhika Sharma New Delhi, Apr 27 () Pressing the rewind button to shows that were wholesome, fun and told their stories sans artifice is perhaps the best antidote to the stresses of today when the country is locked in to stave off a pandemic, say some of those who rang in the golden age of TV in the 1980s and 1990s.Shows such as "Khichdi", "Sarabhai vs Sarabhai", "Buniyaad" and "Office Office" are about nostalgia, of course, but are also helping the younger generation discover a gentler India.The lockdown, which began on March 25 and is set to go on till at least May 3, has led to production shutdowns and a freeze on fresh episodes of current TV shows, forcing channels to dig into their archives to bring back old favourites, including the first major TV retelling of the epics, "Ramayan" and "Mahabharat", that have been remade several times since. And it couldn't be timed better, said old-timers like filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, writer-director Asif Kapadia and actors Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah. Kapadia, writer-director of "Khichdi" and co-producer of "Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai", said the progressive values of the two shows, both revolving around Gujarati families, make them relevant even today. "Khichdi" is a good natured look at a madcap joint family whose members want to sell their mansion and go their separate ways but stay put because of the patriarch. "Sarabhai vs Sarabhai" revolves around a south Bombay affluent Gujarati family whose members are often at odds with each other."These shows have been a part of many generations. So people get a lot of hope, joy, and laughter. Their return is also giving the audience freedom from the current crop of shows which glorify a regressive mindset," Kapadia told ."After watching 'Sarabhai' or 'Khichdi' with family, people will not feel that something wrong has entered our drawing room. Apart from the comedy and values, they also like the inherent innocence and fun of these shows," he added. The "Sarabhai" trio -- Satish Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah and Sumeet Raghavan – said they are enjoying revisiting the show in these worrying times.Laughter is the best medicine, Satish Shah said."Just as doctors prescribe antacids with certain amount of medicines, humour too works like an antacid. What else can be better than 'Khichdi' and 'Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai', which have an eternal shelf life of unadulterated humour?" he asked.Ratna Pathak Shah, who plays Maya Sarabhai, said the shows remind people of happier, simpler, and more innocent times.Asserting that she is not "too much of a fan of nostalgia", the veteran actor said, "But I'm very curious to find what the younger generation is going to say about these programmes. The old and young people who have seen and loved it will enjoy them all over again, I guess. I'm looking forward to hearing some opinions and meanwhile, I'm enjoying 'Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai'." Raghavan, who plays Sahil, a son caught between his mother and wife's constant bickering, on "Sarabhai" said bringing a blast from the past to comfort audiences is the way to go."Except for the digital platform, there is nothing new to watch on TV because shoots have stalled. So the best thing is to get these iconic shows back on TV. All the shows are available on YouTube or other digital platforms... But television still has its own charm. I feel watching those old shows again brings a smile on our faces which is so important in these times," he said. "Office Office", which was praised for projecting a common person's woes in government offices and tackles important issues in a humorous way, will stay "evergreen", said Kapur who plays the lead role of Mussadilal Tripathi.Its comedy is identifiable. "It has always had a soft spot in my heart because we had a wonderful time working for about four and four-and-half years on this project. The show created social awareness with humour, which is its asset. It'll stay evergreen for years to come because the problems that it talked about are there everywhere. We can talk about it for years," the veteran actor said.Hemant Pandey, who plays the role of Pandeyji, a government employee, on the show, said the show is relatable and relevant, a classic comedy that can never grow old. "In these testing times, families can come together and watch a show that brings happiness," he said."This show will make people nostalgic and also make younger audience experience comedy like never before. I have beautiful memories attached to the show."Filmmaker Ramesh Sippy who directed "Buniyaad", a Partition saga told through the fortunes and misfortunes of the family of a freedom fighter, is happy to see the serial return after over three decades of its airing and hopes the younger generation discovers it now."It has been more than 30 years and the show still has recall value. People remember it even today, they associate it with the Partition. Today's young generation has forgotten all that, it has been more than 70 years. But still, somewhere in families, the stories are there. The younger generation can't look back the same way as the older generation did. But I hope they discover the show now," Sippy said.Actors Arun Govil and Deepika Chikhalia, the original Ram-Sita of Indian TV, believe their show "Ramayan" will bring generations -- old and young -- together as the world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic."It is good the show is back, the timing is great for the release as everyone is at home with their family. It is a show meant to be watched with the entire family, the young generation with the old generation," Govil said."It is the right time because the scenes are so gloomy and economically we are bad, at every stage and phase, the world is suffering. Blast from the past: old TV shows not just about nostalgia in lockdown month

<keyword id="6354700" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Anil-Kapoor">Anil Kapoor</keyword>’s 24, the adaptation of the American TV series with the same name, had been touted as a game-changer in the Indian television space. It had a popular first season and is currently on its way to the second. But it was not the first time when Indian TV got a significant makeover. Over the years, we had been watching serials and soaps that entertained, amused, surprised and even shocked the audience. Here’s a look. 
 
1. Hum Log 
Shown on the Doordarshan in 1984, this series marked the beginning of the television revolution in India while viewers had their first taste of soap. It lasted 156 episodes and several characters, including Basesar Ram, Bhagwanti, Nanhe, Badki, Majhli, Chutki, Lalloo and Imarti Dadi, became household names. 
 
2. Ramayan 
Those who were born in the 80s could well believe it when we say that the streets became empty on Sundays at 9.30 am as it was the time to watch the Ramayan. Starring Arun Govil as Ram, Deepti Chikhalia as Sita and Dara Singh as Hanuman, Ramayan is the world’s most viewed mythological series. 
 
3. Dekh Bhai Dekh 
If Hum Log mirrored the middle class Indian family, Dekh Bhai Dekh, produced by Jaya Bachchan, told the story of a rich, modern but loving joint family. It was one of the popular sitcoms, aired on Doordarshan’s GEC, DD Metro. Starting in 1993, the show ran successfully for 4 years. 
 
4. Flop Show Stand-up comedy and comic shows are the rage today. But this show never failed to minister a regular dose of laughter to its audience. It was written and directed by the legendary satirical comedian, late <keyword id="34752" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jaspal-Bhatti">Jaspal Bhatti</keyword>, who also played the lead role. Flop Show was, ironically, a big hit. 
 
5. Swabhimaan Directed by <keyword id="6370367" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mahesh-Bhatt">Mahesh Bhatt</keyword> and scripted by Shobha De, this show introduced the viewers to the world of complex relationships, infidelity, power, property entanglements and what not. It was the first show to complete 500 episodes in a span of 2 years. 
 
6. Meri Awaz Suno 
Those who stay glued to their seats to watch talent hunts like India’s Got Talent, Indian Idol, Voice of India and more, would be glad to know that it was a show on Doordarshan, called Meri Awaz Suno, which had helped discover the extremely talented Sunidhi Chauhan. The show was hosted by Annu Kapoor and judged by <keyword id="31278" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lata-Mangeshkar">Lata Mangeshkar</keyword>. 
 
7. Zee Horror Show 
Those who swear by the thrill of horror will remember the spine-chilling Zee Horror Show, which brought all things uncanny bang into our drawing rooms. Presented by the Ramsay Brothers, it was one of the most popular shows of the 90s. 
 
8. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (KSBKBT) 
The longest running show in the history of Indian television, KSBKBT introduced us to the glorious Gujarati family – Virani. It was the story of Tulsi and her endeavours to become an ideal wife, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and grandmother-in-law. Due to its domestic connect, it was the No. 1 show even in its eighth year. 
 
9. Kaun Banega Crorepati In the new millennium, mega star <keyword id="6357912" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="amitabh-bachchan">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword> became a part of your everyday life with Kaun Banega Crorepati. Based on the UK game show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, this one started in 2005 and recently completed the 7th season. This show changed lives of many with big cash prizes. 
 
10. Bigg Boss 
While the real life of common man had already come under the scanner with talent hunt shows like Boogie Woogie and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, it was the time to get up, close and personal with your fav stars. And Bigg Boss, based on Bigg Brother, did just that. A show that gave a sneak peek into the real life of stars was an instant hit among the viewers. 
 
11. Satyamev Jayate When his counterparts were busy throwing mental and physical challenges at the audiences, Mr Perfectionist, <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>, thought of striking an emotional chord. With his <keyword id="9363" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Talk-show">talk show</keyword>, Satyamev Jayate, he highlighted sensitive social issues of the country. He cried, smiled and hoped for a better India and so did his audience. The show is all set for its second season to go live in March 2014. 
 
12. Comedy Nights with Kapil He was a nonentity in Bollywood. But little did stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma know that one day he would be hosting one of the most watched chat shows. The popularity of the show can be gauged by the fact that even mega stars like <keyword id="4546" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shah-Rukh">Shah Rukh</keyword> and <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> can’t skip promoting their movies on the show.
