This can result in a loss of quality in some cases but turning on the Night mode improves the quality of photos significantly.<br /><br />Samsung has also updated its camera app to rename some confusing names like Live Focus to Portrait mode. The phone performed really well even in challenging situations.<br /><br />Overall, Samsung has nailed the camera experience in terms of quality, performance, ease of use as well as a diverse range of features. Streaming videos, playing music in the background or simply using social media apps and surfing the internet – the phone breezes through everything.<br /><br />The phone does get a little hot in some cases, though it has improved to a fair extent when compared to the Galaxy S20 series. Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G review – the best Android smartphone, yet

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I'm an <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-moving-to-south-africa-from-us-2022-4">American who has a South African partner</a>, and we come from very different cultures.</li><li>Christmas isn't as festive in <keyword id="11992087" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="south-africa" source="Orion">South Africa</keyword>, and political conversations come up less frequently.</li></ul><p>I'm a born-and-raised New Jerseyite who met my partner after <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-to-do-south-africa-not-tourist-traps-2017-12">moving to South Africa</a> at the beginning of 2020.</p><p>Because we didn't grow up in the same country, let alone on the same continent, we've discovered a lot about each other's unique upbringings and lifestyles.</p><p>Based on our experience, here are some of the most surprising differences between life in the US and South <keyword id="11894607" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="africa" source="Orion">Africa</keyword>.</p><h2><strong>My partner's eyes go wide when I leave a 20% tip at a restaurant</strong></h2><p>The first time I paid the bill on one of our dates, my partner's eyes widened at the sight of the 20% tip I left our waiter.</p><p>Americans tip between <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-you-should-tip-in-every-situation-2014-4">15% to 20%</a> on average, with the understanding that tips <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/feb/01/fired-applebees-waitress-needs-tips">make up a portion</a> of many waiters' salaries. From what I've seen in South Africa, it's more common for people to add between <a href="http://www.whototip.net/tipping-in-south-africa">10% to 15%</a> to the bill here. </p><div type="image" title="Megan Gieske partner with a cocktail and both of them smiling with drinks" height="900" width="1200" msid="92305336" hostid="261"></div><p>Even though tipping at hair salons and nail parlors <a href="https://www.southafrica.net/gl/en/travel/article/tipping-at-spas-in-south-africa">isn't expected</a> in South Africa like it is in the US, I still get uncomfortable paying for a service without including a tip.</p><p>Most of the time I include a small one, which can then lead to some confusion. The last time I <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-not-to-do-at-a-hair-salon-2018-3">tipped a beautician</a> in South Africa, she asked if I just didn't want the spare change.</p><p>Tipping <a href="https://www.capetownmagazine.com/tipping-south-africa#:~:text=PETROL%20ATTENDANTS,-Petrol%20attendants%20are&amp;text=Tipping%20is%20standard%2C%20and%20can,but%20cash%20tips%20are%20preferred).&amp;text=Something%20to%20consider%3A%20R5%20is,checking%20tyre%20pressure%2C%20are%20provided.">petrol attendants is common</a> in South Africa, however. In exchange for the extra money, they'll add on services, like cleaning car windows and checking tire pressure.</p><h2><strong>Interracial dating is still very uncommon in South Africa </strong></h2><p>My partner is a fifth-generation <a href="https://qz.com/india/1471361/the-indian-diaspora-in-south-africa-is-about-so-much-more-than-gandhi/">Indian South African</a>. He and his family have retained a lot of their Indian culture through holidays, foods, and languages, like Hindi and Tamil.</p><p>I'd visited India twice before meeting my partner, so I was already familiar with a lot of his cultural traditions by the time I visited his family in Chatsworth, a suburb of Durban that has <a href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/gandhi-descendants-durban-south-africa/index.html">one of the largest Indian populations</a> in the world outside of India.</p><p>A lot of people in his neighborhood stared at us. One woman even leaned over her wall to get a look at us in his family's backyard, which we found hysterical. Maybe they were surprised to see a white person in a predominantly Indian community, or perhaps could have been surprised to see a <a href="https://www.insider.com/interracial-couples-discuss-how-they-talk-about-race-2018-1">white person and an Indian man together</a>.</p><p>Although the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-36703797">apartheid-era ban on interracial marriage was lifted</a> in 1985, relationships between partners of different races still aren't common in South Africa, nor are they always accepted.</p><p>My partner and I can count the number of other interracial couples we know on one hand.</p><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Megan Gieske and her partner holding hands in front of a colorful wall" height="4017" width="5356" msid="92305339" hostid="261"></div><p>From what I've seen, there is still some animosity and a lack of understanding between people of different races and backgrounds, which my partner and I attribute to South Africa's apartheid era.</p><p>Some South Africans have told me they wouldn't date someone of another race because there would be too many differences between them, but my partner and I have the important things in common, like our love of <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> and adventure.</p><p>Since American music, movies, and politics are popular worldwide, my partner already knew a lot about the US despite only visiting once before. It was easy for him to connect to my culture.</p><h2><strong>I noticed that political conversations seem to come up less frequently in South Africa </strong></h2><p>In South Africa, I've never heard anyone discuss which political candidate they voted for, or even which party they supported.</p><p>I don't even know who my partner voted for, and he doesn't know which political parties and candidates his friends support either.</p><p>The only time my partner and I have discussed politics publicly in South Africa has been with my American friends.</p><p>In the US, being a <a href="https://www.insider.com/democrat-celebrities-2018-11">Democrat</a> or a <a href="https://www.insider.com/republican-celebrities-2018-11">Republican</a> can feel like as much of a character trait as being funny or charismatic. When I was living there, I often understood and defined other people by their party affiliation.</p><p>When I last visited home, many of my family and friends had heated arguments over politics at the dinner table. But the topic seems to be less emotionally charged in South Africa. </p><p>From what I've seen, politics rarely come up in my conversations here. When they do, it's usually because someone is <a href="https://apnews.com/article/africa-south-africa-business-government-and-politics-e806adebeaef73acd6326316eb0f72af">discussing corruption allegations</a> against South African leaders, such as <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/26/jacob-zuma-trial-south-africas-ex-president-denies-corruption-charges">former President Jacob Zuma</a> and <a href="https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-06-10-ramaphosa-farmgate-what-we-know-what-we-dont-know-and-why-you-should-care/">President Cyril Ramaphosa</a>. </p><h2><strong>My partner has mixed feelings about American patriotism</strong></h2><p>I've found that many South Africans have roots across the continent and take pride in being African, celebrating Africa Day each May 25.</p><p>I can't imagine considering myself North American. Patriotic people wear red, white, and blue on days other than the Fourth of July. Countless songs have lyrics about American pride.</p><p>My partner thinks <a href="https://www.insider.com/most-popular-patriotic-movies-in-the-us-2019-7">American patriotism</a> is over the top.</p><p>An American visiting Cape Town once told him that America is the "best country in the world," a disrespectful sentiment he and I have never heard from tourists of any other nationality.</p><h2><strong>My partner has never experienced the excitement that comes with the first snow of the year</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Megan Gieske and her partner hugging in santa hats on the left, Megan Gieske smiling on the right" height="900" width="1200" msid="92305345" hostid="261"></div><p>It <a href="https://southafrica-info.com/land/south-africa-weather-climate/">rarely snows</a> in South Africa. </p><p>Sure, my partner has seen artificial snow at a ski resort in Canada, but I think it's tragic that he's never seen <a href="https://www.insider.com/snow-facts-2018-12">real snow</a> fall from the sky. It's certainly on his bucket list, but he doesn't have the passion for winter that I do.</p><p>Snow days are something he <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-and-worst-holiday-movies-of-all-time-2019-12">knows about from movies</a>, but they were one of the greatest joys of my childhood.</p><h2><strong>South African Christmases aren't as festive as mine were in the US</strong></h2><p>Before I moved to Cape Town, I spent Christmas in <keyword id="11925139" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="new-jersey" source="Orion">New Jersey</keyword> <a href="https://www.insider.com/review-favorite-hot-chocolate-recipes-from-popular-chefs-taste-test">drinking hot cocoa</a> and watching the snow fall by the fire. </p><p>I was gutted to find out that my favorite holiday <a href="https://www.insider.com/christmas-around-the-world-2018-12">isn't nearly as festive</a> in South Africa as it is in the US.</p><p>Although I've tried to share some of my family's Christmas traditions with my partner, some of them just aren't doable in Cape Town, like finding a Christmas tree farm or touring decorated houses on Christmas Eve.</p><p>I found that most Christmas trees were small and artificial, a far cry from the 6-foot ceiling scrapers I missed from home.</p><div type="image" title="Megan Gieske and her partner with an elephant, and a christmas tree on the right" height="900" width="1200" msid="92305347" hostid="261"></div><p>Only one house in our neighborhood was decorated with Christmas lights last year, and the <a href="https://qz.com/307452/why-its-time-for-south-africa-to-take-down-its-walls/">high walls surrounding many South African homes</a> kept me from seeing Christmas trees through living-room windows.</p><p>Since Christmas <a href="https://www.go2africa.com/destinations/south-africa/when-to-go">falls in South Africa's summer</a>, fewer people seemed to watch cozy holiday movies. I was shocked to find that no one I knew had heard of my favorite one: "The Year Without A Santa Clause."</p><p>Even though Christmas in Cape Town has been an adjustment, living here has exposed me to <a href="https://www.insider.com/holidays-celebrated-around-the-world-americans-missing-out-2018-5">new traditions and holidays</a> that I may never have experienced if I didn't move. </p><p>On the first Christmas I spent with my partner, summer was in full effect, and we celebrated with a poolside braai, or a South African <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-and-worst-things-to-get-at-a-bbq-place">barbecue</a>. </p><h2><strong>The changing of the seasons isn't as big of a deal in South Africa </strong></h2><p>My small New Jersey farming community practically worships the changing of the seasons.</p><p>Summertime pool parties and <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-bbq-sauces-chefs-use-2018-5">cookouts</a> eventually lead to <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-places-to-visit-in-fall-2018-9">fall activities</a>, like drinking <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-starbucks-pumpkin-spice-latte-cultural-icon-2021-10">Pumpkin Spice Lattes</a>, picking apples, and exploring corn mazes.</p><p>These iconic fall traditions symbolize the passage of time for Americans, but I've never seen any of them in South Africa.</p><p>The changing of the seasons isn't as dramatic here because the weather stays largely consistent throughout the year, except for some windy, rainy winters.</p><p>Without my familiar seasonal markers, it's been more difficult for me to realize the year is passing.</p><h2><strong>My partner thinks it's antiquated that Americans still use checkbooks </strong></h2><p>I think checkbooks are convenient and easy to use, so I was surprised to learn that my partner has never owned one (nor has he ever written a check). Our friends in Cape Town haven't used checks either.</p><p>South Africa officially <a href="https://www.gov.za/speeches/south-african-reserve-bank-discontinuation-cheques-18-nov-2020-0000">discontinued the use of checks</a> in 2020, partially in an attempt to discourage fraud. They weren't really popular or widely used before their official discontinuation, though.</p><h2><strong>We have a better work-life balance in South Africa</strong></h2><h2><div type="image" title="Megan Gieske and her partner laughing in front of pink building" height="3930" width="5907" msid="92305350" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>South Africa, especially Cape Town, has a very different work culture than the US.</p><p>On Fridays, traffic toward more residential neighborhoods starts before 3 p.m. And when you meet someone for the first time, they rarely ask what you do for a living, a question I often heard in the US.</p><p>South Africa also has <a href="https://www.gov.za/about-sa/public-holidays">12 public holidays</a>, whereas <a href="https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/federal-holidays/#url=2022">the US has a total of 11</a>.</p><p>In South Africa, <a href="https://www.gov.za/about-sa/public-holidays">April alone has three</a> public holidays — Good Friday, Family Day, and Freedom Day — and those days off make a big difference when it comes to work-life balance.</p><p>However, joblessness in South Africa has been an ongoing issue that worsened during the coronavirus pandemic, and the country's unemployment rate <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/south-africas-unemployment-rate-hits-new-record-high-q4-2021-2022-03-29/#:~:text=PRETORIA%2C%20March%2029%20(Reuters),statistics%20agency%20said%20on%20Tuesday.">rose to a record high of 34.9%</a> in the fourth quarter of 2021. For comparison, the US had an <a href="https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS14000000?years_option=all_years">unemployment rate of 3.9%</a> in December 2021.</p><h2><strong>My partner thinks it's inconvenient and confusing that US prices don't include tax</strong></h2><p>The first time my partner visited the US, he bought a meal at the <a href="https://www.insider.com/airports-that-have-the-best-and-worst-food-2020-1">airport</a> using cash.</p><p>When the cashier handed him his change, he counted it and told them they overcharged him. They then explained that they had factored in <a href="https://www.insider.com/countries-that-require-a-tourist-tax-2019-2">taxes</a>. Since prices in South Africa <a href="https://www.expatica.com/za/finance/taxes/a-guide-to-tax-in-south-africa-949409/#vat">factor in value-added tax</a>, he didn't know that sales tax isn't included in US prices. </p><p>My partner thinks it's inconvenient to have to calculate the tax before you make purchases, especially if you're paying in cash.</p>

The FDA said it's identified 2o other drugs that rely on ingredients or final products from China, where the novel coronavirus has been spreading, but didn't name them. </p><p>Concerns of what shortages might mean for medical care in the US are now front and center. <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/congressional-testimony/safeguarding-pharmaceutical-supply-chains-global-economy-10302019">Much of the world's supply</a> of generic drugs relies on ingredients made in China, and some factories have shut down in an effort to curb the coronavirus outbreak.</p><p>Additionally, India said Tuesday that it is restricting the export of <a href="https://dgft.gov.in/sites/default/files/Noti%2050_0.pdf">26 drugs and ingredients</a> to ensure it has supplies of key drugs like antibiotics, which could further limit supplies of medications to the US. </p><p>Should shutdowns persist, they could prevent supplies for key drugs like antibiotics and the heart drug heparin from reaching generic drugmakers and ultimately patients around the world, experts told Business Insider. </p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fda-announces-first-coronavirus-drug-shortage-2020-2"> The FDA just announced the first drug shortage caused by the coronavirus, but wouldn't identify the drug</a></em></p><h2>'It has reached crisis stage for companies that haven't diversified'</h2><p>Steve Ferreira, founder of maritime transport consultancy Ocean Audit, highlighted the antibiotic penicillin as a product that's at risk as manufacturers in China temporarily shut down. </p><p>Ferreira said his clients, which include several Fortune 100 companies, are especially slammed if their supply chains lack a non-China manufacturer.</p><p>"It has reached crisis stage for companies that haven't diversified," he told Business Insider.</p><p>The base ingredient for penicillin is manufactured largely in China, Ferreira said. China claims 44% of the exports of "Penicillins, derivatives, in bulk, salts," <a href="https://oec.world/en/profile/hs92/294110/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">according to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity</a>. Nearly half of that goes to India, where it's repackaged into dosage form.</p><p>In producing goods ranging from nails to snow shovels to medicine, Ferreira said he's forecasting a gap of three to six weeks in companies' supply chains - and executives will have to scramble to find alternatives.</p><p>"Expenses are going to go up, and it will increase the price of consumer products," he said.</p><h2><strong>Why a shortage could happen</strong></h2><p>There are a number of factors that can lead to drug shortages, even when a new disease isn't menacing manufacturing plants.</p><p>In some cases, companies make business choices that led to shortages, such as giving up on unprofitable drugs. Other drug shortages are related to manufacturing problems. There's also been a <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-08-05/teva-s-just-the-start-as-more-generic-drugmakers-poised-to-merge">consolidation of the manufacturers</a> that produce generic drugs, meaning there are fewer companies around to pick up the slack if one runs into trouble.</p><p>There are currently <a href="https://www.ashp.org/Drug-Shortages/Current-Shortages/Drug-Shortages-List?page=CurrentShortages">202 drugs in shortage in the US</a>, according to a list maintained by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. </p><p>Bernstein analyst Ronny Gal wrote in a February 26 note that he spoke with supply chain experts who said that should the situation with the coronavirus not improve, we could expect to see shortages start to pop up later in the second quarter of 2020 and early in the third quarter. </p><p>Because China plays such a key role in making the chemicals used in generic drugs - especially those used in antibiotics and the heart drug heparin - the spread of the coronavirus and the subsequent closures of factories where the chemicals are made could lead to a shortage if the shutdowns persist beyond another month or two. </p><p>For the most part, big branded pharmaceutical companies like <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/lilly-statement-on-novel-coronavirus-and-the-reliable-supply-of-the-companys-medicines-301015291.html">Eli Lilly</a> have been quick to say they're not anticipating any shortages. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>For the last four years, vegan food startup Hampton Creek had yet to crack the eggless egg.<p>But on Thursday, the company announced it was rolling out its first scrambled "egg" product, "Just Scramble," in several restaurants in San Francisco - starting with<span>&#xa0;Flore, a cafe in the city's Castro district. It plans to expand to other cities and companies next year.</span></p><p>The company's mission is to transform the way we eat by swapping the animal products in food for vegetable-based alternatives. It made a name for itself in 2013 with its eggless "Just Mayo".</p><p>Hampton Creek has long promised a standalone eggless egg product. But the company became mired in controversy after allegations that it had bought its own product to artificially inflate sales. Four years later, the company&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hampton-creek-eggless-scrambled-egg-product-2017-10">still wasn't selling a vegan alternative to eggs</a>.</p><p>The company continued to churn out products, and consumers ate them up. Its line includes plant-based foods like cookie dough and dressings, which are sold in stores including Wal-Mart and Whole Foods. Hampton Creek products are also served in thousands of schools as well as in stadiums and corporate cafeterias.&#xa0;In June, the company&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hampton-creek-lab-grown-meat-2017-6">announced that it was going to work on lab-grown meat</a>.</p><p>Since starting six years ago, Hampton Creek has raised more than $220 million and is currently valued at $1.1 billion. On Friday, the company announced that two firms that invest in social and environmental sustainability, Radicle Impact and Blue Horizon, will invest in the company.</p><h2>Cracking the eggless egg</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Plants are the centerpiece of Hampton Creek's operation. Pea protein is the basis for "Just Mayo," while "Just Cookies" and "Just Dough" feature sorghum.<p>On a recent tour of the company's headquarters, we tried the latest iteration of its eggless egg - a liquid mixture made with mung beans, an ingredient the team calls simply "Jack."</p><p>Ben Roche, a head of product development and a Michelin-starred chef, poured some of the yellowish liquid into a frying pan. A soft layer began to solidify along the bottom of the pan. As Roche stirred, the mixture started to take on a more defined shape.</p><p>Roche scooped the finished product into a small bowl and sprinkled it with sea salt. The product certainly looked like eggs - it had the texture and the characteristic pastel-yellow color, and it was steaming like a hot scramble normally would.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>I shoved a forkful into my mouth. It didn't taste quite like eggs , but it wasn't bad, either.</p><p>Next, Joshua Hyman, Hampton Creek's head of culinary programs, introduced me to the company's latest iteration of the eggless egg: patties.</p><p>These don't have an official name yet, and aren't yet slated to be sold.</p><p>Hyman slid what looked like an egg sandwich towards me - the egg patty (which has the same ingredients as the scramble) was inside a toasted bialy lightly smeared with "Just Mayo".</p><p>I tried a small bite of the sandwich - which had preemptively been cut into quarters as though in acknowledgement of my skepticism - and was blown away.</p><p>The texture was perfect, and the taste? Distinctly egg.</p><p>It didn't seem like it could be the same product, but perhaps all the "Just Scramble" needs is a bit of toasted bread and a smidge of mayo or butter.</p><p>Hyman told me that he envisions the patties being sold as an alternative to the scrambled eggs that normally go in foods like egg sandwiches and breakfast burritos.</p><p>As we talked, I ate three more pieces of my "egg" sandwich and put the fourth in a bag to take home.</p><h2>'You won't solve the food problem without solving the meat problem'</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The idea with all of Hampton Creek's food is that by replacing animal products, we can waste fewer resources and eat more healthily.</p><p>Producing meat is especially wasteful.</p><p>Every half-pound of beef uses more than 800 gallons of water and is responsible for roughly <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/slideshow/the-greenhouse-hamburger/">7.5 pounds of carbon dioxide</a>&#xa0;-&#xa0;the equivalent of driving a car on nearly 10 miles. Producing the same amount of potatoes, on the other hand, requires about a tenth of that CO2 and a fraction of the water.</p><p>Eating too much meat - something the average <a href="https://blogs.wsj.com/numbers/how-much-meat-do-americans-eat-then-and-now-1792/">American does nearly every day</a> - can also be bad for our waistlines. It is high in saturated fat and cholesterol - characteristics that make it perfectly OK to eat by itself in moderation but&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-you-should-never-eat-white-rice-2017-11">unhealthy when combined with refined carbohydrates</a> like a hamburger bun and fries.</p><p>With this in mind, Hampton Creek CEO Josh Tetrick&#xa0;told Business Insider that the company is continuing to work on its "clean meat" operation.</p><p>"You won't solve the food problem without solving the meat problem," he said.</p><p>Tetrick's effort involves growing real animal cells in a lab and using them to make fish, chicken, and beef. It's a radical departure from Hampton Creek's other products, all of which involve simply replacing animal ingredients with vegetable ones. But he says it's necessary to fix the America's problematic relationship with food.</p><p>In Hampton Creek's "clean meat" lab in San Francisco, images of marbled white-and-red Kobe beef, pink chicken breast, and salmon-colored fillets of sashimi - all packaged with the company's signature "Just" label - graced the walls.</p><p>But they have not yet released a product or allowed any journalists to sample what they're working on.</p><p>"We haven't nailed it yet," Tetrick said.
