<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6358540" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sony">Sony</keyword> Corp wants to slash TV manufacturing costs by giving all the work to robots, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/03a3da7a-a63d-46c6-b8b4-003687c3666d">the FT reported</a>.</li><li>The company is targeting full automation of TV manufacturing and increased use of <keyword id="62549" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Robotics">robotics</keyword> for making smartphones, cameras. </li><li>It expects to cut costs by 70% at its largest television-making factory.</li></ul>Sony wants to give robots complete control of making its televisions in a bid to slash costs, according to a report in <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/03a3da7a-a63d-46c6-b8b4-003687c3666d">the Financial Times on Sunday.</a>Kimio Maki, head of Sony's electronics businesses, told the newspaper that he expected full automation of production lines at the company's main TV factory in Malaysia to cut costs by 70% by the fiscal year 2023, compared with 2018.Maki said that Sony also wanted to increase its use of robotic automation in smartphone and camera manufacturing, although it would keep some human workers on those production lines.He told the newspaper: "I don't think automation alone using robots will bring enough merits. The key is to use digitalization to link both sales and manufacturing."Sales data would be studied using artificial intelligence to more effectively calculate manufacturing volumes, Maki told the FT.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Air Force apparently wants to put autonomous <keyword id="94769" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="drones">drones</keyword> up against fighter pilots and is planning some sort of air-to-air combat test for next year.</li><li>Air Force Lieutenant General Jack Shanahan, head of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, revealed Thursday that the Air Force Research Laboratory is developing an AI-driven autonomous fighter aircraft for the test.</li><li>"This is less about the success of beating a human in 2021," Shanahan said, "but learning about what does it take to build a different kind of system."</li></ul>The US Air Force plans to put an artificial intelligence-driven drone up against a fighter pilot in air-to-air combat next year.The dogfight is expected to be held in July 2021, Air Force Lt. Gen. Jack Shanahan, head of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, revealed Thursday, <a href="https://www.airforcemag.com/air-force-to-test-fighter-drone-against-human-pilot/">Air Force Magazine reported.</a> The event is admittedly aspirational.<a href="https://youtu.be/pAA0HdB7zqE">Speaking at a Mitchell Institute event Thursday</a>, Shanahan acknowledged that there are "lots of autonomous systems in [the Department of Defense] today," but "there are very few, and I would say really no significant, AI-enabled autonomous systems."He said he envisions a future with smaller, cheaper, more disposable, swarming, AI-enabled autonomous systems. Shanahan revealed that work is currently underway, in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory, to develop a drone that could challenge a manned fighter.Shanahan said that Steven Rogers, the head of autonomy at the laboratory, hopes to field an autonomous system in July of next year "to go up against a manned system in some sort of air-to-air" dogfight. He called the plan a "bold, bold idea."He said that Rogers and his team will likely "have a hard time" getting to the point where "the machine beats the human" by next year. "This is less about the success of beating a human in 2021," Shanahan said, "but learning about what does it take to build a different kind of system."Rogers first revealed that AFRL's Autonomy Capability Team 3 was working to develop an unmanned, artificially intelligent fighter aircraft in 2018, <a href="https://insidedefense.com/daily-news/rapid-autonomy-development-team-sets-18-month-plan-autonomous-fighter-jet">Inside Defense reported at the time</a>. It is unclear what next year's air-to-air battle will look like, assuming it happens. It is also unclear exactly what the AI-driven autonomous drone might look like, but the aircraft could be optimized for performance without having to take into consideration requirements to protect a human pilot.Another advantage is that it would likely be able to make decisions much faster than a human being.In February, tech innovator and billionaire <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1233478599170195457">Elon Musk tweeted that the competitor to the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, an advanced stealth aircraft, should be "a drone fighter plane</a> that's remote controlled by a human, but with its maneuvers augmented by autonomy."Musk said that the F-35 "would have no chance against it."During the 2018 interview with Inside Defense, Rogers revealed that AFRL was also interested in augmenting the capabilities of fighter pilots through machine learning.Explaining that top pilots have thousands of hours of experience, he asked, "What happens if I can augment their ability with a system that can have literally millions of hours of training time?"

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Joe Raedle/Getty Images</div></div></div>Artificial intelligence has already beaten us at chess and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-ai-beat-humans-in-an-iq-test-2015-6">bested us in IQ tests</a>.Now, scientists say they have created an AI that can solve SAT geometry questions as well as the average American 11th-grade student.Researchers at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Seattle created a program called GeoS, which uses computer vision to see, uses language algorithms to read and understand problems, and uses a mathematical algorithm to solve them.The AI correctly answered 49% of geometry questions from official SAT tests, and 61% of practice questions, the researchers showed. If you extrapolate its performance on the official questions to the entire SAT math section, the AI would have an approximate SAT score of 500 out of 800 - the same as the average high schooler's math score in 2015.<a href="http://geometry.allenai.org/assets/emnlp2015.pdf">The findings</a> were presented Monday presented at the Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP) in Lisbon, Portugal.The best-known test of a machine's intelligence is the Turing test, invented by mathematician Allen Turing in 1950. But this test, which involves fooling a human in a blind conversation, is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ai-researchers-arent-trying-to-pass-the-turing-test-2015-8">no longer considered a good measure of articifial intelligence</a> by many scientists today."Unlike the Turing Test, standardized tests such as the SAT provide us today with a way to measure a machine's ability to reason and to compare its abilities with that of a human," Oren Etzioni, CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, said in a statement.A big part of how humans understand text and graphics is not explicitly stated, but requires more subtle knowledge. The team's biggest challenge was converting the SAT questions into language the AI could understand.
