"I think we'll see a faster transition to pure EVs," he said in an panel with Business Insider's Alex Davies. "And as the price curve continues to improve for batteries in the next two to three years, that will help." Parker predicted that 2025 will mark an inflection point where electrics become affordable and available enough to take off: "I think we'll start to see accelerations after that." Hybrids are more complex to engineer, Parker said, since they have to incorporate both battery-electric technology and a combustion engine. Those complexities, coupled with the advent of better batteries, will drive investments into "pure" battery electric vehicles, he said. Previous moves by GM certainly suggest a preference for going all-electric. The automaker announced it would discontinue its Volt hybrid in 2018 and <a href="https://www.gmsustainability.com/highlights-and-features/ev-portfolio.html">has announced</a> that it will release 20 fully electric vehicles by 2023. In his panel with Business Insider, Parker said that the automaker could sell a million <keyword id="381751" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Electric-vehicle">electric vehicle</keyword>s in major markets globally by 2025. Last week, GM released a Hummer electric vehicle. Lyft, which became the country's biggest bike share operator in 2018 by acquiring Motivate, has recorded its biggest year of bike rentals, as the pandemic has pushed people to avoid public transit, and rethink how they move around. "The silver lining of a terrible period of time we've been in as Americans, and people around the world, is really being challenged, forced, inspired to try a new way to go about their day-to-day routine," Samponaro said. Samponaro also spoke to helping cities improve infrastructure to make them more friendly for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bikes-and-electric-scooter-industry-whats-next-in-ten-years-2020-3">"micromobility"</a> solutions like shared electric scooters, urban planners having a better ability to give input on how cities are built, and how to address some health concerns that may coincide with more congested cities. Lyft's head of transit says cities should keep catering to bikes and scooters even after the pandemic

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Travel and <keyword id="58218" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Commuting">commuting</keyword> nosedived in March when the <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> pandemic first hit the US.</li><li>Business Insider spoke with two <keyword id="386989" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="mobility">mobility</keyword> experts, Gary Hallgren of Arity, and Meera Joshi of Sam Schwartz, about how the pandemic has changed commuting. </li><li>Driving has dropped by as much as 70%, but as it's starting to return, people question the rush-hour commuting schedules they used to follow.</li></ul>With stay-at-home mandates, social distancing, and lockdowns in effect everywhere, it's tough to get away on a trip right now, to say nothing of regular commuting.But as time goes on, it's becoming clear that the pandemic is reshaping not just how we get around now, but how we'll plan to do so in the future. During <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKMueU2_8dQ&amp;feature=youtu.beu.be">Business Insider's Tuesday IGNITION: Transportation panel</a>, senior editor Alex Davies spoke with Gary Hallgren, president of mobility data and analytics company Arity, and Meera Joshi, principal at urban design firm Sam Schwartz and former chair and CEO of New York City's Taxi and Limousine Commission. Using data collected across 23 million devices, including mobile phones and cars, Arity logs about a billion miles of driving data every two days. As much of the United States went into lockdown in March, the company statewide driving decrease by as much as 70% as people obeyed lockdown measures and stayed home. It's slowly starting to come back, though.Worryingly, however, Arity found that despite a drop in overall <keyword id="6361065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="traffic">traffic</keyword>, there's been a 15% increase in high-speed driving. The risk of collisions has fallen, likely due to fewer cars being on the road, but the crashes that do happen are more severe because people are driving faster. That data matches up with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-dangerous-driving-illegal-roads-empty-police-jails-cops-spread-2020-5">the "free-for-all" on empty US roads</a> that various law enforcement agencies noticed during the spring. One of the biggest observed changes, Hallgren said, is when people are driving. Morning commutes have decreased dramatically and are still down about 20% across the country. Night and weekend driving have started coming back, though.Joshi believes the pandemic will reshape the way we think about rush hour. Historically, you'd need to be at your office at around 9 in the morning, but the rise of working from home has all but eliminated the very idea of rush hour for those employees."On March 13 we were all like sardines on a subway," she said. "That may be a thing of the past for a very long time. Not because people are hesitant to get back on the subway, but now we have control over the cadence of our work. Do we need to honor a rush-hour system if it's proven to be not necessary anymore?"People are still hesitant to ride trains, buses, and subways, despite <a href="https://www.samschwartz.com/apta-public-transit-and-covid19-report">a recent study conducted by Sam Schwartz</a> — a <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> firm that tackles infrastructure and mobility issues — which found "no direct link between [public] transit and infection rates." That doesn't mean movement is down in urban areas. In New York City, Joshi said that traffic through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, which connects Manhattan to Brooklyn, is actually greater now than it was in September of last year. She also noted that the scooter company Revel saw an increase in subscriptions and daily ridership during the pandemic. People are searching for alternative means of transportation to get where they need to go. Hallgren and Joshi agree that the pandemic has forced both people and companies to take a hard look at how commuting works. Hallgren questioned the necessity of long trips to and from work after this "grand experiment" that has made many realize they can do their jobs from home. Joshi reasoned that this could be an opportunity for states to rethink highway development. How many lanes will we need at the end of this? So said Gary Hallgren, the president of AllState insurance's analytics-focused spinoff Arity in an interview with Business Insider senior tech editor Matt Weinberger.Speaking at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ignition-transportation">IGNITION: Transportation on Tuesday,</a> Hallgren discussed the importance of collecting and analyzing information about how human drivers interact with other drivers, as well as how humans interact with self-driving cars. Arity began as part of AllState insurance, which Hallgren called a "gift," because of the access it had to so much driving data. The company collects information like speed, acceleration, barometers, as well as data from your phone, like how often you looked at it and how fast you were going at the time. With this data plus insurance claims, Hallgren says Arity can "identify and quantify risky driving unlike anybody else," accurately predicting what kind of driving will cause accidents, and how much they will cost. Hallgren sees future uses of this data to make autonomous driving safer. Now, the company has data on how humans interact with other humans while driving, but he hopes to build data on how humans interact with self-driving cars, and how vehicles interact with each other, which could be used to make those vehicles safer and prevent accidents and deaths.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Business InsiderArity collects driving data</div></div></div>Hallgren said that Arity plans to "go where the data is and grow."
