Pakistan's government has made overnight changes in the anti-corruption laws to make them more stringent, hours before former premier Imran <keyword id="6355601" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="khan" source="Orion">Khan</keyword>'s appearance before the country's apex anti-graft investigation agency on Tuesday in a corruption case. Senate Chairman <keyword id="6359505" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sadiq-sanjrani" source="Orion">Sadiq Sanjrani</keyword>, who is working as acting president in the absence of President <keyword id="1670707" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="arif-alvi" source="Orion">Arif Alvi</keyword>, who is away on pilgrimage, issued an ordinance to empower the <keyword id="418459" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-accountability-bureau" source="Orion">National Accountability Bureau</keyword> (NAB) to arrest a suspect during inquiry period and also allow the NAB court to remand a suspect for 30 days in custody after arrest instead of earlier 15 days. <br /><br />The ordinance was issued at the advice of Prime Minister <keyword id="11977746" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shehbaz-sharif" source="Orion">Shehbaz Sharif</keyword>. <br /><br />"The prime minister's advice in para 6 of the summary is approved. The National Accountability (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, is signed and promulgated," a notification signed by Sanjrani stated. <br /><br />The changes were made around midnight and just hours before Khan was set to appear before the NAB. <br /><br />Khan, 70, left with his wife <keyword id="6775193" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bushra-bibi" source="Orion">Bushra Bibi</keyword> from Lahore to Islamabad as both were to appear before the NAB in the Al-Qadir Trust case, his media team announced in a WhatsApp message. <br /><br />The Al-Qadir Trust case alleges that the PTI chief and his wife obtained billions of rupees and land from a real estate firm for legalising Rs 50 billion that was identified and returned to the country by the UK during the previous government led by Khan. <br /><br />The Al-Qadir Trust case is about corruption of at least Rs 50 billion. Khan has denied any wrongdoing and accused the government of targeting him for political reasons. <br /><br />Interestingly, the same government earlier had changed the NAB law to reduce the remand period to 14 days from the original 90 days. But it again enhanced the remand duration to 30 days. <br /><br />The NAB laws have been quite controversial as successive governments used them to silence opposition. Pak govt makes overnight changes in anti-corruption laws

<keyword id="3001" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="pakistan" source="Orion">Pakistan</keyword>'s election commission on Thursday announced that the general elections in the country will take place in the last week of January 2024, amid mounting pressure from political parties that pressed for timely elections in the cash-strapped country. In a statement, the electoral body said that it reviewed work on delimiting constituencies and the initial list for the delimitation of constituencies would be published on September 27. <br /><br />It said parties would be able to file objections after that the ECP would address all objections and suggestions. <br /><br />After hearing objections and suggestions regarding the list, the final list would be issued on November 30, which would be followed by the election schedule, it said. <br /><br />It said that by the end of delimitation, it would announce a 54-day election program and "polls will be held in the last week of January 2024." <br /><br />The National Assembly was dissolved on August 9 and constitutionally, the elections should be held within 90 days but the process was delayed by the ECP due to the delimitation exercise which became mandatory in the wake of the new census held this year. <br /><br />The previous government just days before the end of its term endorsed the results of the census which obligated the ECP to set up a new electoral district on the basis of the latest population. <br /><br />The move led to fears that the polls meant to be held within 90 days may be delayed till next year as the delimitation process would take about four months to complete. <br /><br />The decision to shorten the timeframe of the delimitation comes amid mounting pressure on the ECP from several political parties that pressed for timely elections. <br /><br />The Constitution also provides that the ECP should complete the delimitation process within 120 days. <br /><br />Currently, a caretaker government is running the country and it will continue until the new prime minister is elected through the elections. <br /><br />Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has said the interim government is committed to upholding the democratic process in Pakistan by holding general elections and it will not make any excuse to delay it. <br /><br />In a letter to the ECP chief earlier this month, President Arif Alvi, who was a founding member of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, unilaterally proposed November 6 as the day for the polls, but the top election body avoided comment on his suggestion.

Caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar and the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) mission chief for Pakistan, <keyword id="14447716" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nathan-porter" source="Orion">Nathan Porter</keyword>, led their sides to the opening round of two-week-long negotiations to discuss the next tranche based on Pakistan's performance in the first quarter that started in July. <br /><br /> Porter "appreciated the government's commitment" to meeting the first-quarter targets, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement after the meeting, which has set the stage for a deep dive into forward-looking reforms under a nine-month bailout package, slated to be completed in March next year. <br /><br /> He also "commended the government's efforts and measures taken in some critical areas" and underscored the importance of continuing these efforts to stay on track for ensuring the country's economic stability, the ministry said. <br /><br /> According to The Express Tribune newspaper, Porter inquired the Pakistani authorities about the next general elections and the functioning of the <keyword id="18202562" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="special-investment-facilitation-council" source="Orion">Special Investment Facilitation Council</keyword> -- the two most crucial issues that affected the country's political and economic landscapes. <br /><br /> Hours after the IMF-Pakistan opening session on Thursday, it was announced that Pakistan's general elections will be held on February 8, ending uncertainty over the much-awaited polls in the cash-strapped country. <br /><br /> The announcement came after the election commission officials met President Arif Alvi at the directives of the Supreme Court. <br /><br /> The clarity on the election date will strengthen the hands of the Ministry of Finance during the negotiations, although the IMF has not explicitly attached any such condition. <br /><br /> The meeting was attended by IMF's resident representative in Islamabad, <keyword id="19370273" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="esther-perez" source="Orion">Esther Perez</keyword> Ruiz, State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmed, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Amjed Zubair Tiwana, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan Chairman Akif Saeed, Finance Secretary Imdadullah Bosal, senior finance ministry officials and several IMF delegates. <br /><br /> Akhtar reported Pakistan's official position on the progress made so far on the USD 3 billion short-term loan agreement - called the Standby Arrangement (SBA) - and explained the fiscal measures being taken to improve the economic situation, according to the Dawn newspaper. <br /><br /> These measures included a tight control on expenditures, both in terms of restricting the development programme and reducing subsidies and provincial fiscal controls, more than the programme's requirements for the first quarter of the fiscal year, resulting in higher-than-targeted primary surplus and non-revenue collections. <br /><br /> The finance minister and other members of her team also held discussions with the visiting team on overall comprehensive reforms and the measures undertaken by the FBR, resulting in higher-than-targeted revenue collections, not only at the end of the first quarter but even in October, the first month of the second quarter. <br /><br /> During the review talks, the government team also generally updated the IMF's mission chief on the latest situation on the power sector's circular debt, which was also in line with the indicative targets, as the consumer-end tariff had been rebased in July, as required under the structural benchmark. <br /><br /> The IMF team was also updated on the government's strategies to address the circular debt issue as agreed under the SBA, both in the power and gas sectors, particularly the recent decisions for a massive increase in natural gas tariff to a level that there would be no circular debt addition during the current fiscal year. <br /><br /> Also, the petroleum development levy targets for the first quarter had not only been achieved but had now exceeded the indicative target for the entire fiscal to achieve an average of Rs 55 per litre levy on petrol and diesel, as its rate had been increased to Rs 60 for both products in the second quarter to help create a cushion for any possible fiscal slippage for unseen factors, the government told the IMF. <br /><br /> Sources said the targets on Net International Reserves (NIR) of the central bank were also generally in line with the first-quarter target of negative USD 14.55 billion, but the second-quarter target of negative USD 13.8 billion NIR could be a challenge, as total disbursements from multilateral and bilateral sources in the first half of the year are targeted at USD 12.2 billion, including USD 5.45 billion in the first quarter and USD 6.73 billion in the second. <br /><br /> Officials said the technical-level discussions with relevant ministries and agencies would begin on Friday, resume on Monday and continue throughout the following week. <br /><br /> During the next week, the IMF team would engage with power and petroleum divisions - being the main areas of past failures and rising fiscal slippages - the FBR, the SBP and key state-owned enterprises besides officials of the Benazir Income Support Programme. <br /><br /> Based on these technical discussions, the two sides are expected to take a break over the weekend and start a policy-level dialogue before wrapping up the review on November 16. The critical discussions would remain on structural reforms, mainly in the State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), quarterly national accounts and climate-related public investment management assessment action plans. <br /><br /> Finance Minister Akhtar also reaffirmed the government's commitment to working closely with the IMF to ensure the successful completion of the SBA and achieve economic objectives, according to the report. <br /><br /> While approving the USD 3 billion loan in July this year, the Washington-based global lender had also released the first tranche of USD 1.2 billion. Pak, IMF commence negotiations for release of $710 million second tranche of $3 billion loan

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11893449" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pakistan" source="Orion">Pakistan</keyword> Prime Minister <keyword id="11995831" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="imran-khan" source="Orion">Imran Khan</keyword> was reportedly going to lose a no-confidence vote in parliament on Sunday. </li><li>Instead, Khan asked the president to dissolve the country's parliament, The Associated Press reported.</li></ul><p>Pakistan's President Arif Alvi on Sunday dissolved the law-making chamber of the country's national assembly, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pakistan-religion-ad929acf523850fdb63a5b6dd960f1d2">The Associated Press</a> reported. </p><p>Alvi dissolved the law-making lower house of Parliament after a plea from Prime Minister Imran Khan, who accused his opposition of working with the US government to overthrow him. </p><p><a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/04/03/1090490181/pakistan-imran-khan-parliament-early-elections"></a>The AP reported that Khan made the request after facing a no-confidence resolution against him. That resolution was likely to pass as 17 members of Khan's own party as well as some coalition partners joined the opposition to remove him as prime minister.</p><p>The opposition would have needed 172 of the 342 votes in Parliament to remove Khan which would allow them to be a part of forming an interim government ahead of elections, The AP reported. </p><p>Deputy speaker, Qasim Khan Suri, had rejected the opposition's motion for the no-confidence vote on Sunday, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/04/03/world/imran-khan-confidence-vote-pakistan">The New York Times</a> reported. </p><p>The AP reported that Suri, an ally of Khan, threw out the motion after Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said the opposition was working with a "foreign power" to enact "regime change."</p><p>Suri said Khan was still prime minister and could dissolve parliament.  Khan on Sunday called for a new election, side-stepping the no-confidence vote. </p><p>In a televised speech, Khan defended his actions by alleging that America is conspiring to remove him from office, but did not offer any evidence, The Times reported. </p><p>"Prepare for elections," Khan said. "No corrupt forces will decide what the future of the country will be."</p><p>Asfandyar Mir, a senior expert with the Washington-based U.S. Institute of Peace, told The AP, that Khan's claims that the US is trying to oust him plays on the mistrust some Pakistanis have about the US. </p><p>Opposition groups said Khan had no right to call for the vote, and that he couldn't dissolve parliament. The AP reported that they planned to take the issue to the Supreme Court. The Times reported that the Supreme Court is expected to hear the issue on Monday. </p><p>Mir told the AP that opposition groups, who ranged across a spectrum of ideologies have been trying to unseat Khan since he was elected in 2018. </p><p>The military had been accused of helping Khan, a former Cricket player, win the election, which is something that Mir said undermined Khan. </p><p>"The movement against Imran Khan's government is inseparable from his controversial rise to power in the 2018 election, which was manipulated by the army to push Khan over the line," Mir told the AP. "That really undermined the legitimacy of the electoral exercise and created the grounds for the current turmoil. "</p>

India is also involved in the Indo-Pacific strategy led by the United States, which Beijing views as a containment strategy to hinder China’s military expansion.<br /><br />Wang stressed that China and Pakistan should cooperate to secure their common economic interests.<br /><br />“The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor [CPEC] is a long-term development plan for Pakistan,” Wang said. “The Pakistani military has made unremitting efforts in corridor construction, especially security.”<br /><br />The corridor, a US$62 billion China-funded infrastructure project, is facing scrutiny in Pakistan over suggestions that it has left the country in a debt trap and is designed to serve China’s political agenda.<br /><br />There have also been security concerns surrounding CPEC projects. In May, gunmen attacked a luxury hotel in the Pakistani port city Gwadar, the hub of a multibillion-dollar Chinese infrastructure project. Children are among the dead, The Associated Press reported.</strong></li><li><strong>Footage from the disaster showed the crash creating a bright orange fireball, and a huge blaze spreading across people's houses.</strong></li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></strong></li></ul><p>A small Pakistani military aircraft crashed into several people's homes during a routine training exercise in the country's north on Tuesday, killing at least 18 people.</p><p>The aircraft crashed in a residential area in Rawalpindi, a garrison city 14 miles south of Islamabad, early Tuesday morning, <a href="https://www.apnews.com/07940fb80c424614b166eb5f27170043/">The Associated Press</a> (AP) and <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-49160416">the BBC</a> reported.</p><p>All five crew members - including two pilots - died from the crash, as did 13 other people on the ground, the AP reported.</p><p>There are children among the dead, the agency added, citing emergency service official Farooq Butt.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><p>Others were critically injured, Butt told the AP - suggesting that the death toll could rise.</p><p>The crash ignited a fire that spread across several homes, the BBC reported. Footage posted on social media showed a bright orange fireball, as well as a huge blaze destroying building structures in the dark.</p><p>The cause of the crash remains unclear. The BBC reported that the aircraft had taken a steep turn not long before the crash.</p><p>The BBC identified the plane as a King Air 350 turboprop, which can be used for surveillance purposes.
