This could potentially cause the price difference between fast-food and casual dining restaurants to shrink.The $20 wage applies to workers at limited-service restaurant chains — those where diners typically don't get table service and pay for their food before eating it — with at least 60 locations nationwide. Fast-food restaurants in California have been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fast-food-isnt-cheap-anymore-2023-11">hiking prices</a> to offset the wage, which is 25% above the state's general minimum wage.Though the legislation was enacted on April 1, some restaurants <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-20-dollar-fast-food-wage-restaurant-prices-jobs-workers-2024-3">gradually raised prices</a> to avoid the sticker shock of dramatically hiking prices from one day to the next.Shane Paul, who owns seven Jack in the Box restaurants in San Diego, told BI he'd raised the prices at his restaurants by about 10% or 11% over the past six to 12 months in anticipation of the higher wages. But in the last 12 months, he's raised prices by between 8% and 10% — largely just to reflect food inflation, he said. He can't raise prices any further to absorb the higher wages because <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-california-menu-could-become-unaffordable-to-cover-wage-hike-2024-3">customers wouldn't come back</a>, he said.Scott Rodrick, who owns 18 McDonald's in northern California, told BI he had a "deep concern" that the new minimum wage "narrows the competitive gap" between different types of restaurants. Rodrick said he'd <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-mcdonalds-fast-food-20-minimum-wage-franchisee-cutting-costs-2024-4">increased prices at his restaurants</a> by between 5% and 7% in the three months of 2024.Executives at Kura Sushi, a sit-down Japanese chain with about 60 locations in the US, told analysts in early April that they thought the $20 wage would increase their value proposition as other chains keep increasing prices.CEO Hajime Uba noted that Kura Sushi's prices were getting "closer and closer and closer" to fast-food pricing.Diners generally go to fast-food and casual dining restaurants for different occasions, Brian Vaccaro, a restaurant analyst at Raymond James, told BI. Sit-down restaurants typically attract diners who want to "relax and rewind" with family and friends. In contrast, people generally go to limited-service restaurants for the speed and convenience, he said.<h2>Wages could soar across the entire restaurant industry </h2>Analysts say that it's hard to predict exactly how diners' habits will change in response to the price increases at fast-food chains. People could buy more groceries, choose fast-food value deals, or switch to different restaurants.Still, some analysts do expect other employers in the state — like full-service restaurants and retailers — to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-20-fast-food-wage-increase-pay-restaurants-retail-jobs-2024-3">start paying workers more</a> so that they can stay competitive, which could ultimately mean other restaurants increase their menu prices, too.Sal Vitalie, who owns The Garden Club, a restaurant in South San Francisco, told BI that he will "absolutely" <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-fast-food-20-minimum-wage-restaurant-raise-pay-compete-2024-4">have to raise his wages to compete with local fast-food chains</a>.Still, in some cases, Vaccaro noted that servers at mid-priced, full-service restaurant chains are likely to already make $30 or more an hour, including tips, so price hikes may just be a way off."If casual dining can hold prices and doesn't see the upward labor pressure, it could receive some benefit as the gap between casual dining and limited service prices narrow," Sharon Zackfia, a restaurant analyst at William Blair, told BI over email."But limited service will still be cheaper, and the key tenets of fast and convenient will remain a positive factor for demand at limited service for customers on the go," she said.Are you a fast-food worker excited about the new minimum wage? Georgieva's comments follow mounting recession calls on Wall Street that have been pushing stocks deeper into a bear market. Some experts expect to see a recession in 2023, while inflation runs at a record-high clip and energy supply chains remain hobbled by the war in Europe. The mixed bag is worrying, Georgieva said, and necessitates "decisive action and strong international cooperation, led by the G20."Georgieva provided an outline to navigating the tumultuous economic picture. She noted three priorities taken from a new surveillance note to the G20 ahead of the group's next meeting. Berlin, May 1 (AP) German authorities agreed Thursday to reopen playgrounds, churches and cultural institutions such as museums and zoos that have been shuttered because of the coronavirus pandemic, but they postponed a decision on whether to relax the rules for restaurants, hotels and kindergartens.Chancellor Angela Merkel said that while there would be regional differences because of Germany's federal structure, the overall goal remains ensuring the health system can cope with the country's outbreak."So far, we have managed to succeed in doing so," Merkel told reporters after a meeting with the governors of Germany's 16 states. "We have all together achieved a lot in recent weeks." Germany, a country of 83 million people, has recorded almost 162,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 6,467 deaths, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University. That is about a quarter the number of virus-related deaths reported in Britain and France, even though the three countries have similar numbers of confirmed cases.Over the past week, Germany recorded between 1,000 and 1,500 new cases a day, down from 2,000 the previous week.The country's success in flattening the curve of infections has sparked calls for its lockdown to end, particularly from businesses that have been forced to close because of social distancing measures.Jobless figures released Thursday showed unemployment in Germany rose by 308,000 to over 2.6 million in the past month. The jobless rate in April stood at 5.8%, up from 5.1% in March.Employers avoided the bigger layoffs seen in other countries by taking advantage of Germany's short-work program, which allows companies in distress to receive state funds if they hold onto employees rather than letting them go.Labor Minister Hubertus Heil said companies registered about 10.1 million employees for short work - more than a fifth of the country's workforce. Also, you can't just exchange your American license for a British one and I, like<a target="_blank" href="https://www.passmefast.co.uk/resources/practical-test/driving-test-pass-rate"> nearly half of UK drivers, failed the practical exam the first time</a> I took it.Even though most people in South Wales, where I live, speak English, all of the street signs, utility bills, and<a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-65082197"> government correspondence are also written in Welsh</a>. I admit I barely know the basics, but those that are fluent can find plenty of work interpreting or translating.<h2>Healthcare in the UK</h2>As an immigrant, I pay a National Health Service (NHS) surcharge. This means, for less than £100 per month, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ways-britain-national-health-service-superior-us-healthcare-2019-1">I get free healthcare</a> at the point of use. I also get free prescriptions because I live in Wales.Private healthcare and insurance exists here, and may mean you get an expedited appointment, but the clinicians are the same — many work in both the public and private systems.<h2>Working in the UK</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.gov.uk/part-time-worker-rights#:~:text=There%20is%20no%20specific%20number,and%20adoption%20leave%20and%20pay)">Thirty-five hours of work per week </a>or more is considered full time. In the UK, most workers seem to have better boundaries than my stateside colleagues, when it comes to actually taking lunch and leaving work on time. It took me a long time to break the habit of eating at my desk, even if I know it's better for my physical and mental health.Coming from the US, part-time worker's rights and generous paid family-leave was a real culture shock for me. Around<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/work-pay-and-benefits/employment/full-time-and-part-time-employment/latest#:~:text=The%20data%20shows%20that%3A,groups%20to%20work%20full%20time"> a quarter of the workforce in the UK is part time</a> — compared to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11793019/Number-Americans-working-time-rockets-1-2m-totals-16-workforce.html">16% in the US</a>. There's also incredible leniency with taking time off for doctors appointments.Salaries are generally lower in the UK than in the US, and<a target="_blank" href="https://www.gov.uk/income-tax-rates"> income tax is set at 20%</a> for income between £12,570 and £37,700 then jumps to 40% for additional income up to £125,140. Despite lower take home pay, I'm way less stressed . The five-weeks paid holiday —that everyone actually takes — certainly helps.I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/difference-between-american-and-british-work-styles-2018-1">work fewer hours </a>and have a better quality of life than I did living in Chicago. As a recovering workaholic, adjusting to what I originally saw as a way-too-relaxed work culture has really helped me set my priorities and put myself first.
