The global smartphone applications processor (AP) market grew 26 per cent to reach $8.9 billion in the second quarter (Q2) this year. According to Strategy Analytics, Qualcomm maintained its lead in the <keyword id="10966499" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone-AP-market" source="Orion">smartphone AP market</keyword> with a 40 per cent revenue share, followed by MediaTek with 26 per cent and Apple with 25.5 per cent. 5G-attached AP shipments accounted for 55 per cent of total smartphone APs shipped in Q2 2022. TSMC manufactured over 80 per cent of smartphone APs shipped in Q2 2022. Samsung Foundry's key customer Qualcomm shifted orders to TSMC in the recent quarters. "Qualcomm's smartphone apps processor (AP) revenue grew 41 per cent despite a 23 per cent shipment decline. Qualcomm's momentum in premium-tier Android APs helped," said Sravan Kundojjala, Director of Handset Component Technologies service at Strategy Analytics. The Samsung Galaxy S22 design win fueled Qualcomm's AP average selling prices (ASPs) to an all-time high. "Despite traction in the premium tier, Qualcomm will likely face inventory correction headwinds in 2H 2022. Samsung LSI' Exynos smartphone AP shipments declined 46 percent year-on-year but showed signs of recovery with traction in mid-range," said Kundojjala. MediaTek posted its all-time high quarterly AP revenue in Q2 2022, driven by a high mix of high-end and premium tier Dimensity 5G APs. The company, however, will see a decline in its AP shipments and revenues in the second half of 2022 "due to continued Android weakness in China". Unisoc, on the other hand, posted a 26 per cent shipment growth in Q2 2022, thanks to continued traction in tier-one 4G smartphones," Kundojjala said. Global smartphone apps chip market hits all-time high of $8.9 bn

The <keyword id="19949639" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rupee" source="keywords">rupee</keyword> stayed on the upward track for the second straight session and appreciated 6 paise to 83.37 against the US <keyword id="19904292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar" source="keywords">dollar</keyword> in early trade on Wednesday, boosted by sustained inflow of <keyword id="20480744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-capital" source="keywords">foreign capital</keyword> and firm <keyword id="19949641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-markets" source="keywords">equity markets</keyword>. The local unit, however, faced resistance due to a stronger American currency and higher <keyword id="20024983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crude-oil-prices" source="keywords">crude oil prices</keyword> overseas, <keyword id="19950258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex" source="keywords">forex</keyword> traders said. At the <keyword id="20520118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interbank-foreign-exchange-market" source="keywords">interbank foreign exchange market</keyword>, the local unit opened strong at 83.39 and gained further to 83.34 against the greenback in initial deals. It later traded at 83.37 against the American currency, registering a rise of 6 paise from its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee had settled 12 paise higher at 83.43 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading marginally higher by 0.02 per cent at 104.90. Analysts said the dollar index fell initially as the US data showed the growth in retail sales was lower than expected, though the currency recovered with May industrial output numbers topping the forecast. Officials of the US Federal Reserve indicated a hawkish stance to continue, dousing hopes of an interest rate cut until December. "The dollar eased against the euro on Tuesday after US retail sales data showed slower growth, suggesting potential Federal Reserve rate cuts later this year," said Anand James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.02 per cent to USD 85.35 per barrel. In the domestic equity markets, the 30-share BSE Sensex rose 199.63 points, or 0.26 per cent, to 77,500.77 points. The broader NSE Nifty climbed 25.55 points, or 0.11 per cent, to 23,583.45 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Tuesday, as they purchased shares worth Rs 2,569.40 crore, according to exchange data. Analysts attributed the strong FII buying to the firm domestic macroeconomic outlook and a sharp fall in the US treasury yield. The government data showed the net direct tax collection grew 21 per cent to over Rs 4.62 lakh crore so far this fiscal on higher advance tax payments by corporates, reflecting robust economic activity. Fitch Ratings on Tuesday raised India's growth forecast for the current fiscal to 7.2 per cent, from 7 per cent projected in March, citing a recovery in consumer spending and increased investment.

According to the IDC, smartwatches, which can run third-party applications on the device itself, accounted for a 24.5 per cent share in the watch category and Apple continues to lead the smartwatch category with a massive 51 per cent share in 2020. "In India, mainly Watch 3 and Watch 6 led to the growth in 2020. Price reductions on older Apple Watches and the promotional discounts offered by banks and e-tailer channels on Series 5 and Series 6 made the device a popular purchase among consumers in India. Apple Watch garners 51% global market share, India sweet spot, says report

Driven primarily by lockdown-induced <keyword id="6358993" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="demand">demand</keyword>, shipments of gaming PCs and <keyword id="731335" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Monitors">monitors</keyword> grew 26.8 per cent year-over-year in 2020 to 55 million units, according to a report from industry tracker <keyword id="668267" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="International-Data-Corporation">International Data Corporation</keyword> (IDC). <keyword id="2426328" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gaming-notebooks">Gaming notebooks</keyword> remained the biggest volume driver through a year marked by home restrictions, according to IDC's <keyword id="11042978" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Worldwide-Quarterly-Gaming-Tracker">Worldwide Quarterly Gaming Tracker</keyword>. Despite being affected by display panel shortages through much of the year, gaming notebooks grew a record 26.9 per cent in 2020 as consumers appreciated their versatility for both work and play. In parallel with PCs, gaming monitors also reached new heights in 2020, growing more than 77 per cent compared to 2019 with shipments reaching 14.3 million units. Aside from the sheer volume, 2020 brought other milestones that could alter future trends. North America and Western Europe combined overtook Asia/Pacific (including Japan) as the <keyword id="2085715" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="largest-market">largest market</keyword> for the first time, largely due to lockdown-induced demand. "Unfortunately, the supply of gaming PCs has tumbled recently and while crypto-mining may be partially to blame, the sheer demand for these products and growth in the player base is more likely the root cause of the shortages," said Jitesh Ubrani, Research Manager for IDC's Worldwide Mobile and Consumer Device Trackers. "New GPUs, new games, added support for ray-tracing, and the growth in demand have also led to an increase in average selling prices during 2020 and will likely remain at these elevated levels in 2021." Looking ahead, IDC expects the gaming market to remain a bright spot after the overall PC market returns to more normal replacement cycles after the pandemic. While gaming desktops will continue to fade in favour of notebooks, their demise will be more than made up for by notebooks and monitors, IDC said. For example, IDC expects gaming monitor volume will exceed that of gaming desktops for the first time in 2021. The gaming monitor market is expected to see a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 10 per cent, said IDC. Adding that it expects this momentum to carry forward as global volumes reach 72.9 million in 2025 with a CAGR of 5.8 per cent. "Much like the notebook market, monitors also faced panel component shortages and surging demand," said Jay Chou, Research Manager for IDC's Worldwide PC Monitor Tracker. "OEMs (Original equipment manufacturers) have to be wise about where to allocate scarce resources and it makes sense to meet gaming display demand as commercial buying and office occupancy in many markets remains weak. IDC expects gaming monitors to capture an increasingly larger share of the total monitor market in the years ahead." Gaming PCs and monitor shipments worldwide grew 26.8% in 2020

New Delhi, Lockdown measures in some of the key export markets subdued <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>'s merchandise <keyword id="35090" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports">exports</keyword> in December 2020 by 0.80% to $26.89 billion from $27.11 billion in December 2019, <keyword id="828182" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="preliminary-data">preliminary data</keyword> showed on Saturday. "India's merchandise exports in December 2020 totalled $26.89 billion, compared with $27.11 billion in December 2019, a marginal fall of 0.80%," a <keyword id="6416832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-commerce-and-industry">Ministry of Commerce and Industry</keyword> statement said on the basis of preliminary data. "Exports during April-December 2020-21 were worth $200.55 billion, compared with $238.27 billion during the same period last year, exhibiting a negative growth of 15.8%." However, in December 2020, the value of non-petroleum exports stood at $24.73 billion, registering a positive growth of 5.33% on YoY basis. Similarly, the value of non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports in December 2020 stood at $22.15 billion compared with $21.06 billion in December 2019, registering a positive growth of 5.17%. On the other hand, India's merchandise imports grew by 7.6% in December to $42.60 billion from $39.59 billion during the corresponding month of the previous year. In December 2020, oil worth $9.61 billion was imported, compared with $10.72 billion in December 2019, a decline by 10.37%. "Non-oil imports in December 2020 totalled an estimated <keyword id="54123" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="USD">USD</keyword> 33 billion, compared with USD 28.88 billion in December 2019, showing an increase of 14.27%." "Non-oil, non-GJ (gold, silver &amp; precious metals) worth USD 26.10 billion were imported in December 2020, recording a positive growth of 8.42%, compared with non-oil and non-GJ imports totalling USD 24.07 billion in December 2019." Consequently, India's trade deficit widened by 25.78% to $15.71 billion from $12.49 billion reported for the like period of last year. India's December merchandise exports slip by 0.80% YoY

New Delhi, <keyword id="188376" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LT-Foods" source="Orion">LT Foods</keyword> Ltd on Monday reported a 64.86 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 157.26 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, helped by expansion in domestic and foreign markets. It had reported a net profit of Rs 95.39 crore for the July-September quarter a year ago, according to a regulatory filing by LT Foods Ltd, which owns basmati rice brands -- Daawat and Royal. Its revenue from operation increased 14.66 per cent to Rs 1,977.78 crore during the quarter under review. It was Rs 1,724.83 crore a year ago. The total expenses in the September quarter surged 11.94 per cent to Rs 1,792.33 crore. Its total income in the September quarter rose 15.02 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,991.81 crore. LT Foods Managing Director and CEO Ashwani Arora said: "Our ongoing efforts to expand our presence in India and International markets have yielded substantial results, with our total business growing by 13 per cent during H1 FY24 and profit after tax (PAT) grew by 55 per cent". LT Foods is a leading player globally in the speciality rice and rice-based foods business. Over the outlook, Arora said in response to the evolving consumer trends and preferences, LT Foods will grow its core business and innovate and introduce new product offerings diversifying its product portfolio. "We are confident of continued improvement in our performance over the long term and in our ability to deliver consistent, sustainable, profitable, and responsible growth," he said. Shares of LT Foods Ltd on Monday were trading at Rs 162.25 on BSE during the afternoon, down 0.46 per cent from the previous close.

LT Foods Q2 2023-24 net profit rises 64.8% to Rs 157.26 cr

The premium tablet PC segment (Rs 30,000 and above) also witnessed impressive growth, with shipments increasing 79 per cent QoQ, according to the report by CyberMedia Research (CMR). However, the overall tablet market witnessed a 10 per cent decline YoY. <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> led with 26 per cent market share, experiencing 20 per cent YoY growth, followed by Samsung (21 per cent) and Lenovo (20 per cent). <keyword id="874458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="xiaomi" source="Orion">Xiaomi</keyword> witnessed a significant 98 per cent YoY growth from a small base in the period. "The robust growth of Apple, coupled with standout performances from <keyword id="6485927" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="realme" source="Orion">Realme</keyword> and Xiaomi, signals a significant shift in consumer preferences at both the premium and value-for-money end of the tablet PC market," said Menka Kumari, Analyst-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR. With the continued proliferation of 5G, "we anticipate an increasingly dynamic and seamless user experience across a diverse range of applications and services," Kumari added. The overall tablet market in India is expected to experience single-digit YoY growth in 2023. "The substantial growth in market shares for key players like Apple, Realme, and Xiaomi reflects a growing demand for diverse tablet options in India," Kumari said.

China's HiSilicon with 18 per cent AP market share was third while Taiwan's MediaTek was narrowly behind HiSilicon to rank fourth, also with an 18 per cent share. Samsung, which makes the Exynos chipsets, was the world's fifth-largest smartphone AP vendor last year with 9 per cent market share. Apple maintained its tablet AP market leadership with a 48 per cent revenue share in 2020, followed by Intel with 16 per cent and Qualcomm with 14 per cent. "Notwithstanding the Covid-19 pandemic, trade war and shortages, the <keyword id="10966499" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone-ap-market">smartphone AP market</keyword> posted all-time high revenue in 2020. Increased shipments of higher-priced 5G and 5nm AP shipments contributed to this growth," said Sravan Kundojjala , Associate Director at <keyword id="192897" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Strategy-Analytics">Strategy Analytics</keyword>. "An increased mix of mid-range and low-end 5G APs from Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung LSI and Unisoc will inevitably pressure <keyword id="10966500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone-ap-average">smartphone AP average</keyword> selling prices (ASP) in 2021," he added. The worldwide smartphone AP market grew 25 per cent to a record $25 billion last year. 5G AP shipments surged in 2020 and accounted for over one-quarter of total smartphone AP shipments in 2020. TSMC led the smartphone AP foundry market with over two-thirds of the market share in 2020, followed by Samsung Foundry. Both foundries saw strong demand for 7nm and 5nm APs. "Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to be a key part of smartphone AP vendors' strategy and shipments of smartphone APs with on-device AI engines reached crossed 900 million in 2020," the report mentioned. Qualcomm leads smartphone app processor market with 31% of revenue share, Apple stands second with 23% share, says new report

Last week, the Chinese government released data which showed that new home prices fell at their fastest rate in over seven years, while property sales measured by floor area fell for a 15th straight month in October. Based on data from the National Bureau of Statistics of <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>, for the year-to-date period till October, investment in real estate development fell 8.8 per cent compared with the same period in the previous year, commercial floor space sold dropped 22.3 per cent, while revenue from commercial buildings sold plummeted 26.1 per cent. In <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, the property price index has been growing steadily in the past few years. The All India House Price Index (HPI) published by the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) grew at an annual rate of 3.5 per cent for the quarter which ended in June (Q1: 2022-23), expanding 1.8 per cent compared with the previous quarter. Although China is now taking measures to revive its property sector, real estate investment firms like Singapore's CapitaLand Investment (CLI) which has a third of its assets in China are looking to diversify their portfolio. Vietnam and India were cited by CLI as possible destinations for future investments. With the property sector accounting for about a quarter of China's USD17 trillion economy, concerned Chinese authorities have been introducing measures over the past months to inject confidence back into collapsing sector. Earlier in November, in the most comprehensive rescue package for the sector, since it was hit by a debt crisis last year, regulators unveiled 16 supportive measures mainly aimed at boosting liquidity for developers. Key measures include allowing banks to extend maturing loans to developers, supporting property sales by reducing the size of down payments and cutting mortgage rates, boosting other funding channels such as bond issues, and ensuring the delivery of pre-sold homes to buyers. Some analysts say that the support measures are the strongest signal yet that the two-year clampdown on the property sector is over. Chief China economist at UBS, Tao Wang, told CNN that the package of measures is a "turning point" for China's property sector. Along with other policies announced earlier this year, she estimates that it could inject more than 1 trillion yuan (USD 142 billion) into real estate. The Chinese government began trying to rein in excessive borrowing by developers to control soaring house prices in August 2020. This move unsettled the property market as the nation's second-largest developer, Evergrande, defaulted on its debt. As the property sector crashed, several major companies sought protection from their creditors. The cash crunch meant that work on many pre-sold housing projects across the country was delayed or suspended. The Chinese property sector was hit hard as developers lurched from crisis to crisis and halted the construction of apartments as they ran out of money. Property prices and transactions decline. Besides the mounting debt among developers, China's strict COVID policies amid rising coronavirus cases impacted manufacturing and consumer spending. The crisis took a turn for the worse in the middle of this year when angry home buyers refused to pay mortgages on unfinished homes, sparking fears of contagion, and causing financial markets to be spooked. Since then, authorities have tried to defuse the crisis by urging banks to increase loan support for developers so that they can complete projects. Regulators have also cut interest rates in a bid to restore buyer confidence. Based on data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China, average new home prices in China's 70 major cities dropped by 1.6 per cent year-on-year in October 2022, after a 1.5 per cent decline a month earlier. It was the sixth straight month of decrease in new home prices, the steepest pace in the sequence, and the fastest fall since August 2015. Sales by the 100 biggest real estate developers shrank 26.5 per cent from a year ago in October, according to a private survey by China Index Academy, a real estate research firm. So far this year, their sales have tumbled by 43 per cent. While welcoming the government's property support measures, analysts remained cautious about the impact it would have on buyer confidence. "The property market has yet to show signs of recovery," said Nomura analysts in a research report last week, adding that the latest measures may have "little direct impact" on stimulating home purchases, adding that the zero-COVID strategy will weigh on the sector. Although it is felt that measures are supportive of the property market, bankers and analysts say they only address the property market's supply problems, with the demand recovery still a key concern. Many people are still reluctant to upgrade their homes or buy new ones due to economic uncertainty and falling employment. Despite the current doom and gloom, one company that is confident in the long-term future of the Chinese property market is Singapore's CapitaLand Investment (CLI). It has about a third of its overall property portfolio, which are mostly non-residential commercial real estate, in China at the moment. In an interview with Nikkei Asia, CLI said it plans to diversify its portfolio and is looking out for investment opportunities in Vietnam and India. The aim is to build resilience in areas like supply chain and energy amid shocks to globalisation seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. CLI whose largest shareholder is Singapore state-owned investor Temasek Holdings is one of Asia's largest real estate investment managers with USD 90 billion worth of property assets and USD 63 billion in funds under management "We would love to do more in Vietnam, we are already very active in India," said Chief Financial Officer Andrew Lim to Nikkei. "What recent events have told us is that it's probably dangerous to put all your eggs in one basket... in an era when globalisation is increasingly being put to the test. Lim thinks that Vietnam in the post-COVID era will emerge as an important destination for capital, especially regarding manufacturing. Whereas India has tremendous solar resources. "These are markets if you are looking for energy redundancy, energy resilience, renewable energy sources, suddenly it becomes important from that perspective." As the property market continues to slump in China, are property investors turning to India?

According to a report by <keyword id="6439913" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="counterpoint-research" source="Orion">Counterpoint Research</keyword>, China's shipments decreased 8 per cent (YoY) in Q3 due to a resurgence of Covid-19 cases. Automotive, router/CPE, PC, industrial and point of sale (POS) were the top five applications in terms of value in Q3. However, some of this demand decline was offset by an increase in the residential, smart door lock, patient monitoring, registrar device, smoke detector, drone, smart meter and automotive applications. Senior Research Analyst <keyword id="329240" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="soumen-mandal" source="Orion">Soumen Mandal</keyword> said that the IoT module market is undergoing changes as demand for low-end technologies like 2G and 3G declines and "shifts towards 4G Cat 1 and 4G Cat 1 bis, where higher-end applications are upgrading from 4G to 5G". In this quarter, the top three technologies in terms of shipments - NB-IoT, 4G Cat 1 and 4G Cat 4 -- accounted for over 60 per cent of the total shipments. "However, in terms of revenue share, 5G, 4G Cat 4 and 4G Other were the top three technologies and held nearly two-thirds of the total revenue. The lower-end technologies such as NB-IoT, 4G Cat 1 and 4G Cat 1 bis are helping connect a greater number of IoT devices, while higher-end technologies like 4G Cat 4, 4G Other and 5G are adding more value to the IoT ecosystem," said Mandal. Despite slower growth in IoT module shipments, IoT module revenue increased by 12 per cent YoY in Q3 due to a higher mix of 5G and 4G Cat 4 modules. Global cellular IoT module market grows only 2% in Q3

New Delhi, Nov 14 () The PC market in India grew 15.8 per cent year-on-year with shipment touching 3.1 million units in September quarter, research firm IDC said on Thursday.
The shipment volume, which includes desktops, notebooks, and workstations, stood at 2.7 million units in the July-September 2018 period, IDC said.
"This growth was mainly driven by the second phase of shipments to the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd (ELCOT) under its ongoing initiative of free distribution of laptops in the state. Also, as Windows 7 is near to its scheduled end in early 2020, corporate and enterprise users accelerated their upgrades to Windows 10," it added.
Lenovo led the tally with 28.5 per cent share in September 2019 quarter, followed by HP (26.4 per cent), Dell Technologies (19.7 per cent), Acer (11.9 per cent) and Asus (5.3 per cent).
The commercial segment witnessed 39 per cent year-on-year growth as vendors shipped a total of 1.7 million units in the quarter under review. Excluding the ELCOT deal, the commercial segment grew 15.7 per cent annually, driven by strong traction for both desktops and notebooks.
The consumer segment, however, was down by 4.2 per cent from the same quarter a year ago. It grew 49 per cent sequentially driven by multiple mega online festivals and Diwali offers.
"As we see consumers shifting entertainment and content consumption to smartphones, PCs are becoming a conscious purchase in India. Consumers are comfortable to wait for discounts and offers while looking to buy or upgrade their PCs," IDC India Associate Research Manager Jaipal Singh said.
Looking at opportunities, branded PC gaming is a growth area in the next few quarters, he added.
"Although India's gaming market is dominated by mobile phones, gamers have already started preferring PCs for a more immersive experience as their best alternate," Singh said.
The desktop category saw a 10.6 per cent y-o-y growth in its shipments, mainly contributed by Windows 10 refresh buying from the banking sector.
Notebooks grew 18 per cent annually on the back of education deals as well as growth in both corporate and SMB segments, as these enterprises scaled up their purchases for Windows 10 migrations. SR SR BAL

India's PC market grew 15.8% to 3.1 mn units in Q3: IDC

<keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> is consistently being bandied as the next major growth market for all smartphone companies, but there is one company that’s really struggling to crack India. The company in question is the most valuable one in the world -- <keyword id="6354427" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple">Apple</keyword>. According to CounterPoint’s latest report, Apple’s market share has dropped to an all-time low in India, with its share of the smartphone market dropping to below 2%. The problem is a combination of the nature of the Indian smartphone consumer, Indian laws and Apple’s stubbornness. This quarter Xiaomi and Samsung have emerged as the defacto leaders with their combined market share in India pushing 30%. Samsung managed to regain its lead in India with a share of 29%, up from 24% in the previous quarter, as per a report by Canalys. Xiaomi also grew to 28% market share in the country. While Tim Cook has reiterated often that India is a key market for the Cupertino-based giant, Apple has hit a new low in India, which is clearly the most important smartphone market outside of China. Pricing doesn’t allow Apple to compete for market share in India The problem for the company is that India is primarily a sub Rs 15,000 market, while the cheapest <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword> – the iPhone SE costs Rs 26,000, and runs three-year-old hardware. Apple doesn’t make cheap products because it doesn’t want to be perceived as a mass market smartphone brand. The Indian market is wildly different from the one in the United States, Europe and even China, which is Apple’s favourite market off-late. These markets are dominated by the operators and their contracts, where users can get the latest and greatest iPhone for about the same Rs 15,000 amount, put in as down payment. The space for phones that cost more than Rs 30,000 is just 4% of the Indian smartphone market. And that is commanded by OnePlus, followed by Samsung. Even if Apple were to get 100% market share in the premium space, it would still only command 4% of the market. Even when competing on price, older iPhones like the 6S and 7 lose out to newer phones from companies like OnePlus on both marketing and also technical capability. Indians tend to buy phones on the basis of specifications and even some of the newer models lose out to brands like OnePlus in the premium segment as the iPhone 6S and 7 models are perceived to be inferior. Hardware disadvantage Apple’s hardware disadvantage swells up when one talks about the cheapest iPhone models in this country. Apple simply doesn’t have a product in that price bracket, the sub-Rs 20,000 zone, and that’s the price point where the market for new smartphones is exploding. While the cheapest iPhone, the SE, costs Rs 26,000, it’s not the best selling iPhone here. It is the iPhone 6, which first popped up in 2014...and here we are in 2018. There are two reasons for this -- first, the iPhone 6 has a bigger screen (4.7-inch) which is more to the liking of Indian users; and second, design-wise, it’s not too dissimilar from the iPhone 8 which came out at the fag end of 2017. With the entry of Reliance Jio in India in late 2016, Indians have developed a voracious appetite for consuming video on the go. The iPhone SE, which uses the design of the iPhone 5 and 5S, has a rather small 4-inch screen. Newer phones like the Redmi Note 5 have much larger 5.99-inch screens. That’s a difference of 2-inches and considering mobile video, it's a huge one. The iPhone SE and iPhone 6, which are the two cheapest iPhones in India also have dated cameras. Nowadays, phones like the Honor 9 Lite and Redmi Note 5 Pro also offer dual cameras with an iPhone X-like bokeh mode -- something these older, cheaper iPhones can’t hope to match. Network conditions in India are often quite poor, connectivity wise, which results in smartphones consuming more battery. Apple’s iPhones have never been known for battery life. The most affordable iPhone in India (iPhone SE) has a meagre 1,624mAh battery, while phones half its price are pushing battery packs that are more than double the size. iPhones also don’t offer hardware features that are popular in emerging markets like ours. For instance, there is no support for dual SIM cards, and there is no support for expandable memory. With newer models like the iPhone 7, iPhone 8 and iPhone X, there isn’t even a headphone jack -- something competitors like Samsung and OnePlus are providing to customers in the premium segment. Apple hasn’t been able to push its design as a premium advantage either, as Chinese smartphone manufacturers have aped iPhone-like designs on almost all their phones. In fact, the design of the iPhone X has been democratised by Chinese smartphone makers. For instance, the iPhone X-style notch display can be found even on new phones like the Honor 9N that starts at just Rs 13,999 while offering dual cameras on not only the back but also for selfies, and also providing a battery that’s almost twice as big as the iPhone SE. Even their software is designed in a way that Android looks more like iOS. Android modifications from vendors like <keyword id="6357456" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="huawei">Huawei</keyword>, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo follow the same basic iOS-like design language. Software disadvantage It’s bad enough that many Android smartphone makers have designed their software to mimic the look and feel of iOS, but Apple’s problems are compounded by the fact that its own services perform poorly in India or are non-existent. Apple Maps is perhaps the biggest no-show. It doesn’t do turn-by-turn navigation in India and its mapping coverage is abysmal in the country. It is a matter of fact that Apple Maps can’t be used in India as a reliable tool for commuting. Apple Pay isn’t available in India at a time where digital payments are taking off in the country. Paytm and Google’s Tez payments systems are taking off in India massively. Samsung launched Samsung Pay in India last year. Apple Pay is dependent on NFC, while Samsung Pay uses a combination of NFC and magnetic secure transaction (MST), which mimics the magnetic signal a credit or debit card makes to a POS machine. Siri, on most days doesn’t understand the Indian accent as well as the Google Assistant, and nor can it do much. Heck, <keyword id="10387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>’s Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa do a better job and this is despite the fact that Apple was the first company to deploy a virtual assistant. While Apple’s services hobble on its own trophy -- the iPhone -- its competitors -- Google, Amazon and Microsoft have their services performing better on iOS. For mapping, most people use Google Maps. For search, Google Search becomes the default, and for productivity, Microsoft’s Office crushes Apple’s iWork apps. Rarely, you’re using Apple software on the iPhone in India. Even Apple Music, which is one of the rare examples of an Apple service doing well in the country, has been flanked by local competition like Ganna.com, Jio music, Wynk and Saavn. All of whom have a free tier. On older iPhones, Apple’s iOS updates have also crippled the experience of the iPhone. A couple of years ago, there used to be a strong argument in favour of the iPhone as it would perform well for over two years. Apple’s recent updates have made older iPhones inferior in comparison to newer Android phones that cost the same. Apple is addressing this issue in this year's iOS 12 update, which makes huge performance improvements to older iPhones, but it could be too little too late. The app store also doesn't make life easy for users as it demands a credit card for a user to even download free apps. That's not the case on the Google Play store. Apple has been late in localising services for India The larger issue here is that Apple isn’t localising its services for India in the way it has attempted to for China. This is indicative of the fact that Apple hasn’t taken the time or put enough resources behind localising its services for this country. Samsung and Huawei have R&amp;D centres in India customising services for the market. Xiaomi also prioritises and customises products for India. Apple opened an App Accelerator in Bangalore and a facility for Apple Maps in Hyderabad only in 2016. Google has had software and services being developed out of India since the mid-2000s, while Microsoft has been in India since the early 90’s. This has, in turn, inhibited Apple’s ability to quickly pivot. Its biggest competitor, Google, on a platform level, makes products for India. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said last year, “India shapes how we build products. If something works in India it will work globally.” And this philosophy can be seen in the customisations that Google has made to core services like Android, Maps, YouTube, Search and even payments. Its next billion division has made “Go” editions of Android, YouTube, Search and Maps, which are designed to work better on low power phones and poorer network conditions. They have even invested in KaiOS that powers feature phones like the Jio Phone creating its own versions of YouTube, Google Search and Assistant in India. For Apple to replicate its China success in India, it has to do a lot more than what it did in China. Even in China, Apple’s momentum has slowed so it has a steep slope to climb there as well. In China, Google and Amazon are almost non-existent. In India, they are big players. Apple isn’t able to compete with Google with regards to services. Most people use Google services which are part of all Android phones and one doesn’t need to buy a comparatively expensive iPhone to enjoy them. Apple and the Indian government: Frenemies? Apple hasn’t seen eye to eye with the Indian government for long. Apple expected concessions for manufacturing in India. It never made headway with that. While it lobbied for tax concessions -- brands like Xiaomi, Oppo and Huawei all got on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ programme which grants locally assembled phones some tax concessions. Only recently, Apple has started manufacturing both the iPhone SE and iPhone 6S in India. There are some reports that Apple has locked in a deal with one of its ODM vendors to manufacture even the iPhone X, but that’s not happening right now. The price variance between the iPhone X and the new Samsung Galaxy S9+ is quite startling. The iPhone X tops out at a whopping Rs 1,07,999 while the latest Galaxy S9+ tops out at Rs 69,000 for its top-end model in India. That’s almost a gap of Rs 40,000 which ironically is the cost of the 128GB model of the OnePlus 6 which is currently the best selling smartphone in the premium segment in this country. In the US, the iPhone X costs $1,149 which is around Rs 79,000 and the Galaxy S9+ costs $792 (around Rs 55,000). This points towards the fact that India is the most expensive place to purchase an iPhone and also the fact that Samsung’s phones have a huge price advantage in India that they don’t enjoy even in the US. And a lot of this is due to the fact that the S9+ is assembled in Samsung’s factory in Greater Noida (a satellite town outside New Delhi) which also happens to be the largest smartphone manufacturing plant in the world. The iPhone is further hobbled by the fact that it has an international warranty and India has a bubbling <keyword id="395545" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="grey-market">grey market</keyword>. It’s totally possible for someone to buy an imported iPhone for much lesser than the official price in India and still enjoy global warranty on the product. For years, Apple has been hoping to get permissions to set up its iconic Apple Stores in India. Indian law stipulates that single brand retail can only happen when products use 30% raw materials that are locally sourced -- that’s a hard problem to solve for Apple. That’s led to it selling its phones via resellers who often have discounted products to move inventory, thereby diluting Apple’s premium identity. In order to move more affordable iPhones, the Indian government has also rejected Apple’s plan for selling refurbished iPhones in India. More recently, Apple has been deadlocked in a stalemate with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in India over the installation of its spam reporting app on the iPhone. The telecom regulator has been reported to be taking extreme steps which could result in the iPhone being blocked from telecom networks in India if Apple doesn’t play ball, but that seems to be changing. An update in iOS 12 could possibly pave the way for an extension in the iMessage app for the TRAI to push out its spam reporting feature. The big takeaway is that Apple’s brand positioning makes its life hard enough in a market where feature phone sales are still growing, however, it hasn’t helped its own cause by not investing in India in a timely manner and also not adopting and partaking quickly enough in initiatives of the Indian government which has put it at a disadvantage with regards to lobbying.
