<p>While there's been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-to-add-new-iwork-features-2013-11" target="_blank">quite a bit of backlash</a> about the <keyword id="35660" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="features">features</keyword> taken out of its desktop apps, I haven't read much about the new iPad or <keyword id="667357" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="iCloud">iCloud</keyword> versions of the suite.</p>
<p>When a friend asked me to crunch some data for him, I knew I had a perfect opportunity to put <a href="http://www.apple.com/mac/numbers/" target="_blank">Numbers</a>, iWork's equivalent to Microsoft Excel, through its paces on the iPad and in the browser.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Mere hours after the release, however, Mac users began </span><a href="https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5468056?start=0&amp;tstart=0" target="_blank">unleashing their fury in Apple's support forum</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> as they started noticing that some of their favorite features were either gone or didn't work the same anymore. </span></p>
<p>The problem: In its update, Apple rewrote each of the applications to be compatible with iOS on the iPad. </p>
<p>This essentially meant a "dumbing down" of the Mac version and took out a lot of productivity features iWork users enjoyed.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Apple took note and<a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6049?viewlocale=en_US&amp;locale=en_US" target="_blank"> just announced</a> that, over the next six months, it would be reintroducing features that were lost in the rewrite, and promised to add brand new features as well. It also reminded users that if they <em>really</em> hated the new version of iWork, they could still access its predecessor, iWork '09. </span></p>

Apple Promises To Add More Features To Its iWork Apps After Users Revolt

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Apple's spring event this year is unusual for the company - it's taking place in Chicago, not California, and it's going to happen at a public magnet high school. Even the invite suggests that whatever Apple CEO Tim Cook ends up revealing next Tuesday will be education focused. </p><p>It's the latest sign that Apple wants to reverse its slide to Google in what was once one of its core markets: schools.</p><p>While Apple has long been associated with American elementary, middle, and high schools, in recent years it's been losing ground to Google in particular, as well as Microsoft. </p><p>"If we look five years ago, when the market was really just starting, Apple sort of ruled the roost and had 50% market share in US schools at least," Futuresource analyst Ben Davis said. "They've lost a lot a share in K-12 in 2017."</p><p>Apple's iPad had 15% of computer sales to "K-12" schools last year, and its MacBook had a 4.6% market share, according to data from Futuresource, a market researcher that closely watches the educational market.</p><p>Compare that to Google's Chromebook platform, which accounted for 58.3% of devices shipped last year.</p><p>Figures from data researcher IDC also back this up, which said that Chromebooks sales started to top MacBooks since early 2016. </p><p>Perhaps that's why Cook and other Apple leaders are planning and rehearsing a corporate event that's going to take place at a magnet high school. </p><p>It's also why the one device that Apple is most likely to announce on Tuesday is a low-cost iPad, which will be perfect for schools, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-23/apple-will-return-to-its-roots-with-education-tools-and-new-ipad">according to Bloomberg</a>. </p><h2>iPad focus</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.amazon.com/i-Blason-ArmorBox-Protection-Convertable-Generation/dp/B008J80FP0?tag=fractuslearn-20&amp;psc=1&amp;SubscriptionId=AKIAJPITVNDV5CAMWL6Q&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=2025&amp;creative=165953&amp;creativeASIN=B008J80FP0">Amazon</a></span></p><p class="caption">Some schools require students to use durable keyboard cases with their iPads.</p></div><p></p></div></div>One of the trends driving the education market is "Common Core" online testing. The two main organizations that manage Common Core testing require devices to have a keyboard, <a href="http://fortune.com/2015/12/10/chromebook-schools/">Fortune reported in 2015</a>. </p><p>But the primary device that Apple targets at schools is the iPad - which doesn't have a physical keyboard. </p><p>Cook's addressed this dynamic before, with an <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/mollyhensleyclancy/tim-cook-apple-has-no-interest-in-making-test-machines?utm_term=.fjxWDRd5Q9#.nhRmJnoQpd">unusually cutting remark in 2015</a> in which he said that Chromebooks and cheap Windows laptops were "test machines," and that Apple had no plan to race to the bottom. </p><p>"We are interested in helping students learn and teachers teach, but tests, no," Cook <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/mollyhensleyclancy/tim-cook-apple-has-no-interest-in-making-test-machines?utm_term=.fjxWDRd5Q9#.nhRmJnoQpd">told Buzzfeed</a>. </p><p>There have been some signs that teachers and students <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/teachers-in-maine-dispute-ipad-value-2016-5">agree</a> that Apple's laptops are a better fit for schools, too. In 2016, a Maine school district gave iPads to students from grades 7 through 12 - and one teacher said "the iPads are a disaster," complaining that students primarily use them to play games during class.</p><p>Other teachers complained that the students used the iPads as toys, and that word processing was "near to impossible."</p><p>Students agreed. One just wrote "WE NEED LAPTOPS!!!" over and over in the district study. </p><p>But Apple's laptops are significantly more expensive than the iPad, which currently retails for as little as $299 on <a href="https://images.apple.com/education/pricelists/pdfs/US-EDUCATION-INSTITUTION-Price-List-1-25-2018.pdf">Apple's educational price list</a>. And Apple is unlikely to play the same cost-cutting game as Google and Microsoft's hardware partners can, so it will have to stand out some other way. Prices for large numbers of Windows PCs or Chromebooks for schools can go as low as $150 per device, according to Futuresource. </p><p>That's because Google and Microsoft don't sell the machines - so they don't mind a price race to the bottom. Microsoft and Google want to provide the software. </p><p>"In the long term, it's not about devices, it's about getting schools in that platform and trading them up to a cloud infrastructure," Davis said. </p><h2>Software</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/vdoe/33378719486/in/photolist-a9JX2W-bzyULm-d2wPBJ-bjmKX4-cXbn6h-s75Esu-bAiCVG-nXbryn-pjsGeB-SV8XzF-nwSXsu-SRyEpy-RyJqVB-RyJrrr-qg2W9Z">Virginia Department of Ed/Flickr</a></span></p><p class="caption">Virginia students use Chromebooks.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Apple is also likely to reveal new software for the classroom on Tuesday, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-23/apple-will-return-to-its-roots-with-education-tools-and-new-ipad">according to Bloomberg</a>. In 2016, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2016/01/28/apple-acquires-education-startup-learnsprout/">it bought LearnSprout</a>, a small startup that provides a dashboard and analytics for teachers. </p><p>Even the realm of classroom software management is a space where Apple now lags Google, which makes "G Suite for Education," a version of Google Apps for schools and teachers. Its Google Classroom app is popular enough that Google is planning to release a version for businesses, <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/google-to-expand-classroom-software-to-business-customers">according to The Information</a>. </p><p>Apple has software called "Apple Classroom" that works with iPads.</p><p>Apple was "not focused on their own productivity suite," Davis said.</p><p>"One of the big drivers that both Google and Microsoft offer is 365 or G Suite for education, including email and productivity tools and all of that. Apple does have productivity tools in its iWork solution, but it's obviously not kind of a mainstay at the company, there hasn't been as much focus and development for the education sector," Davis said. "Google and Microsoft built out those platform tools alongside the devices more effectively, I would say."</p><p>One advantage Apple's software may have over rivals is that Apple's software has a very good reputation for securing user data. Apple is fighting to win back a market it used to dominate

On Tuesday, Apple made the latest versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote for iPhones, iPads, and Mac free. We first saw the news on <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/2017/04/18/apple-imovie-garageband-iwork-free-for-all-users/">MacRumors</a>. </p><p>Previously, the Mac versions of these apps cost $19.99 per app, and the iOS versions cost $9.99 per app. However, Apple has included its first-party apps for free with new iPads and Macs in the past, so you might already have already downloaded these apps. </p><p>Apple also made iMovie and GarageBand free for iOS and Mac as well. Apple just made its Microsoft Office killer free - here's how to download it

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Dear iPad and iPhone users: if you like Microsoft Office instead of Apple's iWork suite, but you want to back up your files to Apple's iCloud, Microsoft just made that possible for you.</p><p>In addition to letting you use iCloud or Dropbox (via <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-partners-with-dropbox-2014-11">a partnership announced in November</a>) or Microsoft's own cloud storage, OneDrive, to store and share files, Microsoft has opened up its platform to any cloud storage provider.</p><p>Office users simply choose 'iCloud" from the Locations picker menu within Office, <a href="http://blogs.office.com/2015/02/17/new-cloud-storage-integration-office/">Microsoft's Kirk Koenigsbauer announced in a post on the Office Blog. </a></p><p>And eventually, they'll use the "Locations" picker to be able to choose other clouds, as well.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Given that there are billions of Microsoft Office files out there, stashed all over the countless number of cloud storage providers, we're guessing that a lot of these providers are going to take Microsoft up on the offer.</p><p>But wait, there's more.</p><p>Microsoft also announced a plan that will let any cloud software company add Microsoft's freebie online version of Office, known as Office Online, to their websites. That means that any online app that would like to work with Microsoft Office can be set up so that you can open and do light editing of these files, via a browser, without leaving their cloud storage app.</p><p>Box, Citrix, and Salesforce are already working on this as a part of Microsoft's new Cloud Storage Partner Program.</p><p>This is the first fruit of a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/salesforce-exec-challenges-microsoft-2014-9">bury-the-hatchet partnership between Salesforce and Microsoft signed last May</a>, a few months after Satay Nadella took over as CEO. Before that partnership, these two were huge rivals.</p><p>While this new cloud-picking feature seems like small potatoes, it's interesting for a number of reasons.</p><p>First, it's a smack-down on Google. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-plan-to-beat-microsoft-office-2015-2">As we reported,</a> Google has a plan to grab 80% of Microsoft's Office users. One part of that plan is to treat Office documents like "first-class citizens," Amit Singh, president of Google for Work told us.</p><p>But Google's plan does not mean that when you open an Office document from Google Drive, it opens in Microsoft Office. The file opens in Google Appd, but with formatting more-or-less intact via an Office-compatible editor, QuickOffice, that Google bought a few years ago.</p><p>If Google wanted to let Drive users open apps in Office Online, it could. We won't hold our breath for that, though. Google is pretty proud of the collaboration features in Apps, and wants to encourage people to use its own software, not give them an escape route back to Microsoft.</p><p>This move by Microsoft is also a smack-down on Apple.</p><p>On Friday, Apple fired a shot at Microsoft Office. For the first time, it is allowing people who do not own Apple devices to sign up for an Apple ID and use that ID to access a freebie cloud version of its Microsoft Office alternative, iWork. Anyone, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-goes-after-ms-office-google-apps-2015-2">on any device, can use now use iWork via web browser.</a></p><p>And a third reason this is interesting is because, oddly enough, Windows users don't yet have the option to choose iCloud or other cloud providers. Microsoft says it is currently working on adding these cloud options to Android, just like, earlier this month, Android users got the choice to use Dropbox.</p><p>That means, for the first time in its history, Microsoft is now piling on features for non-Windows users, months to years before they are available to Windows users. For instance, Microsoft still doesn't have a touch-friendly version of Office for Windows, although the touch-friendly Office for iPad <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-office-for-ipad-launches-today-2014-3">is now about a year old.</a> (<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The full-featured, touch-friendly Microsoft Office is coming with Windows 10, Microsoft's next version of Windows, expected to be out late this year.)</span></p><p>Microsoft used to treat Apple's platforms as second-class citizens, releasing features first for Windows, with Mac users waiting months to years to get the same.</p><p>Now, the reverse is true, at least when it comes to the iPad.</p><p>And that's so smart. Apple And IBM Announce Huge Partnership For Enterprise Customers

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Apple has stepped up its efforts to hit its two biggest rivals - Microsoft and Google - where it hurts.</p><p>Apple <a href="https://www.apple.com/iwork-for-icloud/">has opened up a public beta</a> that allows anyone, PC  or Mac, to use the cloud version of its office productivity suite, iWork, for free via a browser.</p><p>All you need is an Apple ID and Apple is now allowing anyone to create one, no Apple device needed. Just point your browser <a href="https://www.icloud.com/">to iCloud.com.</a></p><p>iWork includes the standard complement of office apps: word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software. The cloud version lets multiple people work on a document at the same time, just like you could do with Google Apps, or with Microsoft's cloud apps, OneDrive (the freebie version) or Office365 (the paid version).</p><p>Apple describes its cloud version of iWorks like this:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Just log in from your browser on your Mac or PC and launch the app you want to use. All the documents you create will be saved in iCloud, and any changes you make will automatically appear in the iWork apps on your iOS devices and your Mac. Your work will always be available at iCloud.com, so you can access your documents anywhere.</p><p>The ability to use iWork from a PC on the web is the latest step in Apple's push to make its Office apps a real alternative to MS Office or Google Apps.</p><p>iWork was launched in 2005 as a reaction to Microsoft Office for the Mac. Microsoft often treated the Mac version as a second-class citizen with users having to wait months or longer for updates that were first released in the Windows version.</p><p>Apple sold iWork for $79. Later, Apple sold the individual apps on its Apple store for $20 apiece for the Mac versions and $10 each for the iOS version.</p><p>In 2013, after all-but-ignoring iWork for years, Apple suddenly updated it and announced it was giving it away for free to anyone that bought a new Apple device or updated to a new operating system. Apple launched a cloud version then, too, but you could only create an Apple ID login on an Apple device, like a Mac, iPhone or iPad.</p><p>Apple isn't just giving away the apps, either. Apple just fired a shot at Google Apps and Microsoft Office

<p>Now, Microsoft is hitting back. Communications chief Frank X. Shaw <a href="http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_blog/archive/2013/10/23/apples-and-oranges.aspx">wrote a blog post</a> accusing Apple of playing catch-up with Microsoft and its <keyword id="96960" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Surface">Surface</keyword> tablet. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Shaw focused on Apple's decision to start bundling iWork with iPads. iWork is Apple's productivity software for spreadsheets, presentations, and word processing. It's Apple's answer to Microsoft's Office. </span></p>
<p>Lots of people started talking about how this was a big threat to Microsoft, and its Office franchise which isn't even on the iPad. </p>
<p>Shaw disagrees. First, he notes that Office is already bundled in with the Surface, so Apple is just following Microsoft's lead. Then, he says<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> the iPad isn't any good for trying to do work, and this is Apple trying to chase the Surface.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"S<span>ince iWork has never gotten much traction, and was already priced like an afterthought, it's hardly that surprising or significant a move," says Shaw. "And it doesn't change the fact that it's much harder to get work done on a device that lacks precision input and a desktop for true side-by-side multitasking."</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>He later adds, </span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"W</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">hen I see Apple drop the price of their struggling, lightweight productivity apps, I don't see a shot across our bow, I see an attempt to play catch up."</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He also responded to Apple CEO Tim Cook insulting Microsoft's Surface strategy. On stage Cook said,</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> "They are confused ... </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">They chased after netbooks. Now they are trying to make PCs into tablets and tablets into PCs. Who knows what they will do next?"</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Shaw responded to that by saying, Microsoft was making life easier for users. They no long have to carry around a laptop <em>and </em>a PC. It's all in one device. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He also says making the iPad is easy. Making the Surface is hard. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Let's be clear - helping folks kill time on a tablet is relatively easy. Give them books, music, videos and games, and they'll figure out the rest. Pretty much all tablets do that.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>"But helping people be productive on a tablet is a little trickier. It takes an understanding of how people actually work, how they get things done, and how to best support the way they do things already."</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">I have to say, I'm really excited for a 1080p Lumia with a third column on my start screen so I can keep a close eye on more people, more news, more stuff.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Of course, even with the 720p display I'm using right now, I could easily spot some coverage today that needs to be corrected.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Seems like the RDF (Reality Distortion Field) typically generated by an Apple event has extended beyond Cupertino.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">So let me try to clear some things up.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Note: If you are the TL;DR type, let me cut to the chase. <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/presskits/surface/">Surface and Surface 2</a> both include<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/presskits/office/">Office</a>, the world's most popular, most powerful productivity software for free and are priced below both the iPad 2 and iPad Air respectively. Making Apple's decision to build the price of their less popular and less powerful iWork into their tablets not a very big (or very good) deal.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Since we launched the Surface line of tablets last year, one of the themes we've consistently used to talk about them is that they are a terrific blend of productivity and entertainment in one lightweight, affordable package. In fact, we're confident that they offer the best combination of those capabilities available on the market today.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">That's not an accident, it's exactly what we set out to design. Perhaps attendees at Apple's event were required to work on iOS devices that don't allow them to have two windows open for side-by-side comparisons, so let me help them out by highlighting the following facts:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">• The Surface and Surface 2 are less expensive than the iPad 2 and iPad Air respectively, and yet offer more storage, both onboard and in the cloud.<br />• … come with full versions of Office 2013, including Outlook, not non-standard, non-cross-platform, imitation apps that can't share docs with the rest of the world.<br />• … offer additional native productivity enhancing capabilities like kickstands, USB ports, SD card slots and multiple keyboard options.<br />• … include interfaces for opening multiple windows, either side by side or layered to fit the way most people actually work.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">So, when I see Apple drop the price of their struggling, lightweight productivity apps, I don't see a shot across our bow, I see an attempt to play catch up.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">I think they, like others, are waking up to the fact that we've built a better solution for people everywhere, who are getting things done from anywhere, and who don't have hard lines between their personal and professional lives. People who want a single, simple, affordable device with the power and flexibility to enhance and support their whole day. :)</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Microsoft</span></p></div><p></p></div>When Microsoft announced that its Office apps are now available for the iPad on Thursday, the company emphasized that this isn't just a port of the Windows or iPhone version.</p>
<p>Microsoft promises that its Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps have all been optimized for the iPad, and so far early reviews agree.<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><br /></span></p>
<p>Engadget's Dana Wollman praised the new iPad Office apps' design <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/27/office-for-ipad-review/">in her review</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Microsoft took its time developing this software (years, perhaps ), and the result is a suite that makes excellent use of the iPad's extra screen real estate. The design here is beautiful, straightforward. What's more, it masks a delightful selection of customization options, many of which you wouldn't know were there at first glance. </p>
<p>There is a caveat however. She notes that since you'll need to pay $99 per year to use the full version of the apps, it's a better choice for those who already have Office 365 subscriptions. Without a subscription, you can only view documents and files but can't create or edit them. Wollman writes:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">It's also a no-brainer for people who already have a 365 subscription; you're already paying to run Office on five computers, so the iPad app is really just a nice freebie. But let's be clear: Office for iPad is not for iPad users looking for a productivity suite; it's for Office customers who happen to own an iPad. Until Microsoft's apps are free for all, Apple will continue to have the home-court advantage on iOS devices, if only because its apps don't cost anything.</p>

<p>Re/code's Bonnie Cha, who used Office apps on her iPad to write <a href="http://recode.net/2014/03/27/microsoft-office-finally-comes-to-the-ipad-with-caveats/">the review</a>, file expense reports create a PowerPoint presentation, said the Office experience translates nicely:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Built from the ground up, the suite offers robust functionality, and does a nice job of bringing the familiarity of the desktop suite into a touch-friendly iPad experience...This isn't a case of taking the iPhone app and stretching it to fit a larger screen, or just dumping the desktop apps onto the iPad.</p>
<p>Like Wollman, Cha also noted the price as a con, along with some other small complaints:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">I also ran into a couple of minor problems with formatting, and the Word app crashed on me twice. But the biggest downside is pricing.</p>
<p><a href="http://mashable.com/2014/03/27/office-for-the-ipad-review/">Mashable's Lance Ulanoff said</a> the apps feel like a suite even though they're available as three separate apps. Overall the Office apps offered a feature-rich experience for Ulanoff, but the lack of printing support could be a drawback for some consumers. He writes:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">I think Microsoft built these three apps right for tablets. They work smoothly, offer virtually every feature I need and offer a sensible level of interaction without over-reaching...Printing will have to come quickly and a set of Android tablet versions cannot come quickly enough (they are in the pipeline), but for now, this is the best productivity choice for current Office and Office 365 users and is real competition for Apple's very able set of iWork productivity apps. </p>
<p>The introduction of Office apps to the iPad marks an important strategy change for Microsoft. Under new CEO Satya Nadella's leadership, the company is willing to work across platforms.
