<br />It’s even trending online as the #FaceAppChallenge.<br /><br />But, the return of FaceApp also brings about questions around how the mobile app accesses data on smartphones. Back in 2017, when the app originally went viral, one of the criticisms against Face App was a <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-04-27/should-you-worry-about-privacy-when-using-faceapp/8476666">vague </a>privacy policy. It was never clear with what it does with the data it acquires from users.<br /><br />Considering a lot of sensitive photos are taken on phones today, like identification documents and banking information, it would only take one wrong picture for things to take an unpleasant turn.<br /><br /><strong>FaceApp might not be to blame<br /></strong><br />French security research <a href="https://twitter.com/fs0c131y/status/1151267523477889024?s=21">Robert Bapiste</a>, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/07/16/ai-photo-editor-faceapp-goes-viral-again-on-ios-raises-questions-about-photo-library-access-and-clo/">TechCrunch</a> and Guardian App’s CEO, <a href="https://twitter.com/chronic/status/1151280938900262913">Will Strafach</a>, say that FaceApp’s issues are not as bad as they are thought to be. <br /><br />All three of them have determined that FaceApp doesn’t upload your camera roll in the background. <br /><a href="https://stackoverflow.com/questions/46404628/ios11-photo-library-access-is-possible-even-if-settings-are-set-to-never">Apple’s API</a> has a security loophole that’s been in place since the introduction of iOS 11. It allows apps to pick up singular photos from the system to work with.<br /><br />There’s an argument to be made for why that shouldn’t be the default setting on smartphones but it has nothing to do with FaceApp abusing the right to privacy.<br /><br />The one thing that is questionable about FaceApp is that it uploads the photo to the cloud, in order to process it. And consent for that is vague since FaceApp doesn’t explicitly point out that particular part of its functionality. <br /><br />

<p>There's a bug in Apple's iOS 11.1 that automatically changes the letter "i" to an "A" with a question mark in a box. This overrides the autocorrect so that every time you type a lowercase "i" it will change to an uppercase "I."</p><p>For the most part, this will solve the problem. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>A leaked version of Apple's iOS 11 software <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2017/09/08/ios-11-gm-d22-iphone-8-details/">published by 9to5Mac</a> on Friday confirms several key features coming to the iPhone 8, which Apple is expected to officially unveil on Tuesday, September 12.</p><p>The blockbuster leak confirms previously reported details about the device, like a facial unlock system Apple calls Face ID, along with new features that haven't been previously reported.</p><p>Here are the details:</p><ul><li>The facial recognition feature used&#xa0;to unlock the iPhone 8 will be called Face ID, according to the leaked software. Here's an animation of the feature's logo that 9to5Mac claims to have found in a video tutorial:</li></ul><ul><li>New "<a href="https://9to5mac.com/2017/09/08/iphone-8-animoji-3d-emoji-face/">Animojis</a>" are essentially 3D emojis that the leaked iOS 11 code describes as "custom animated messages that use your voice and reflect your facial expressions." Apple will apparently use the iPhone 8's facial recognition feature to make these work. The CEO and a dozen former employees have started at Apple.</strong></li><li><strong>TechCrunch reports the purchase price was around $30 million. </strong></li><li><strong>Augmented reality is a major focus for Apple, as the tech industry expects that high-tech headsets like the Totem could put a dent in the smartphone market.</strong></li></ul><p><br /><a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/AAPL-Quote">Apple</a> has purchased virtual reality headset maker <a href="http://www.vrvana.com">Vrvana </a>- bringing the iPhone maker closer to its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-augmented-reality-headset-could-ship-2020-report-2017-11">reported goal of selling smart glasses by 2020</a>.</p><p>The news was <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/11/21/apple-acquires-mixed-reality-headset-startup-vrvana-for-30m/">first reported by TechCrunch</a>, and confirmed by a person familiar with the matter to Business Insider on Tuesday. Vrvana was founded in 2005 in Montreal, Canada. About a dozen Vrvana employees, including CEO <span>Bertrand Nepveu, have been working at Apple in its augmented reality division for weeks, according to the source. </span></p><p>TechCrunch reports that the purchase price was about $30 million.</p><p>Vrvana is best known as the creator of the still-in-development Totem headset. In addition to virtual reality, the Vrvana Totem is said to be able to overlay full, colorized digital images over the real-world. That would be a step above rivals like the Microsoft HoloLens, which only project transparent "ghost" images within a limited field-of-view.</p><p>If the Vrvana Totem lives up to those lofty promises, it could give Apple a major leg up in augmented reality, which the company sees as the next major computing platform.</p><p>Apple's augmented reality division is said to be in the hundreds of employees, led by former Dolby executive Mike Rockwell. That team is reportedly focused on everything from Apple's headset efforts, to the ARkit augmented reality tech in Apple iOS 11.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Vrvana</span></p><p class="caption">A prototype of the Vrvana Totem</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Augmented reality refers to the technology for projecting digital imagery over the real world. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-f8-mark-zuckerberg-on-augmented-reality-2017-4">Facebook </a>and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-and-alex-kipman-on-windows-phones-2017-5">Microsoft </a>have both expressed their belief that augmented reality could replace most screen-based technology, including the smartphone - there's no reason to carry a phone, when your texts and videos are projected in front of your eyes. </p><p>This dynamic has made it a major imperative for Apple to build its position in augmented reality: If augmented reality glasses gain market position, it could harm sales of the iPhone, still Apple's most important business. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Apple released details about the upcoming iOS 11.3 update for iPhones, which has more information about the new battery and power-management features.</strong></li><li><strong>In its detailed note, Apple subtly reminds users that it started slowing down iPhone performance in January 2017, and that it was not a long-standing practice.</strong></li><li><strong>Apple also hints that the company informed users about the 2017 power management feature, which is true, but the explanation at the time wasn't clear enough. </strong></li></ul><p> </p><p>Apple published a post on Wednesday containing details about the upcoming iOS 11.3 update for iPhones, which includes details about the new battery and power-management features the company recently promised.</p><p>There isn't much about the iPhone battery and power management features in Apple's iOS 11.3 preview that we don't already know. It basically says the new version of iOS shows your battery health and will recommend when it needs to be replaced.</p><p>It also says you'll be able to turn off the iPhone's power management feature that slows down an iPhone's chip to prevent unexpected shutdowns if your iPhone's battery isn't healthy enough.</p><p>Here are Apple's own words:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">iOS 11.3 adds new features to show battery health and recommend if a battery needs to be serviced. These can be found in Settings -&gt; Battery and are available for iPhone 6 and later.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Additionally, users can now see if the power management feature that dynamically manages maximum performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns, first introduced in iOS 10.2.1, is on and can choose to turn it off. Perhaps the company added that piece of information so you know the feature was only introduced relatively recently in 2017. That way, you can't blame Apple's power management feature for slowing down your iPhones before the update.</p><p>By adding that piece of information, it also feels like Apple is suggesting to its users that it told them about the power management feature in the iOS 10.2.1 update. Indeed, in an ABC interview after it was discovered that Apple's feature slowed iPhone performance, Tim Cook said <span>"When we did put it out, we did say what it was, but I don't think a lot of people were paying attention, and maybe we should have been clearer as well."</span></p><p>It's true that Apple did mention the power management feature in the iOS 10.2.1 description, but it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-battery-explanation-might-cost-company-in-court-2018-1">wasn't exactly clear</a> that it would slow down iPhone performance. It also wasn't clear that, if iPhone performance was being affected, it was due to poor battery health. That information could have let iPhone users make better decisions when their iPhone's performance was "managed."</p><p>Had users known that their iPhone performance was affected specifically by battery health, they could have had their battery replaced for $80 - the pricing before the $29 discount - instead of buying a new iPhone for hundreds more.</p><p>The reasons why these new features are being introduced are a little unfortunate, as the whole iPhone-slowing-down thing came out as a bit of a scandal. Apple makes a subtle hint in its preview of the upcoming iOS update about the feature that slowed down iPhones

<p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p>The latest iPad Pro may actually live up to Apple's claims that the high-end tablet could replace your laptop, essentially making it the only device you'd ever need.<p>Tech benchmarking website <a href="http://barefeats.com/ipadpro2017.html">Bare Feats</a> found that the new 10.5- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models aren't that far behind the new 13-inch MacBook Pro in terms of performance.</p><p>And Bare Feats wasn't comparing the iPads to the base 13-inch MacBook Pro with Intel's Core i5 processor. It compared the iPads with the most powerful option for the 13-inch MacBook Pro, complete with the fastest Core i7 processor option. Check out the benchmark results below, where the higher the number indicates better performance:</p><p class="source"><span>Bare Feats/GeekBench/Circles by Business Insider</span></p><p>In theory, and according to the benchmark, Apple's latest iPad Pros could actually be faster than last year's 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Core i7 processor.</p><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p><p class="caption">iOS 11 brings a macOS-style Dock to the iPad.</p>On top of the iPad Pros' incredible performance, Apple's newest mobile operating system iOS 11 adds some key features to the iPad that makes it work more like a MacBook Pro laptop than ever before.<p>For one, iPads will have a Dock, just like you see on the desktop operating system macOS.</p><p>And there's also a new app called Files that lets you browse and organize files store in iPads, like documents, photos, and PDFs.</p><p>At first glance, it may seem like the $900 12.9-inch iPad Pro with 256GB of storage could offer much better value than the $1,800 13-inch MacBook Pro with the fast Core i7 processor. They both have similar-size screens, and the iPad is half the price for almost as much power. Yet, it's unlikely that the iPad could be the only "computer" you'd ever need, as it's missing some key features.</p><h2>Why can't iPad Pros <em>really</em> replace your laptop?</h2><p>Touchscreens like the iPad's are great when it's time to kick your feet up on the couch and browse through casual websites and social media. But when it's crunch time at work, you've got to have another input method: a mouse, or a trackpad.</p><p>Imagine sitting at your desk and constantly raising your arm throughout the day to tap or swipe the iPad's screen for web browser tabs, links, option menus, and scrolling. It would get tiring pretty quickly, not to mention it's less efficient. It's just not practical compared to a trackpad or a mouse, which requires less effort to control than a touch screen. With that in mind, your laptop can't be replaced by an iPad and its touch screen. Many would still need a laptop for work. </p><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p><p class="caption">The new Files app in iOS 11.</p><p>And even if Apple added mouse support on its iPads, the iPad Pro's 4GB of RAM wouldn't cut it these days. My laptop has 8GB of RAM and I wish it had more. In fact, anyone who uses several tabs on Google Chrome would wish they had more than 8GB of RAM. </p><p><span>RAM, for the uninitiated, makes for speedy and smooth multitasking. It's like your computer's back pocket where it keeps things like apps and web browser tabs that you recently opened handy for when you need to open them again. The more RAM you have, the more apps and browser tabs you can run in the background without throttling your performance.</span></p><p><span>Plus, at the end of the day, iOS on the iPad is still a mobile operating system that runs the mobile version of apps. As good as it is, it's still pretty limited for productivity, at least when you compare it to a fully featured and versatile desktop operating system like macOS.</span></p><h2><span>The iPad is a tablet first</span></h2><p><span>Indeed, the iPad Pro is an incredibly powerful tablet that can run powerful apps like Adobe's Photoshop and Lightroom, and you can get Microsoft's Office apps through the App Store, too.
