Apple announces six upcoming games slated to debut in April on Apple Arcade

<ul><li>Business Insider India’s mystery shopper visited Mumbai’s Apple store on the very first day and compared it to the stores she visited in the US. </li><li>Most visitors came in groups, and a few even visited during office breaks. </li><li>Even with a large number of visitors, Apple Geniuses of all nationalities were welcoming visitors and giving demos. </li></ul>I am writing this article on a MacBook Pro — a product that was launched the year I was born, 2006. Since then, all Apple products be it iPods, iPads, iPhones or Apple TV have been a part of my life. I have been to an Apple store before too at New Haven in Connecticut, but my most memorable Apple store visit is the freshly launched one at Jio World Drive in BKC. Though I was a tad late to be welcomed by Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, the feeling of euphoria was still there. There was music playing, people were just as excited even at 12 noon — even in the heat while waiting in a queue. There were two singers belting out songs, performers dressed in colorful costumes dancing in front of a rapturous audience. I stood in the long line for half an hour to enter the store, the queue seemed to wind indefinitely reminding me of an airport security line. The Apple team was sending people inside in batches and as expected, people were lingering around soaking in the sights. However, the smiles on the faces of the people exiting the store with tote bags that had a customized Apple logo on them — made me feel that the wait was worth it. Mid-day summer’s heat Needless to say, the heat outside was palpable – over 36 degrees Celsius. But there was another kind of warmth around too. The Apple team was giving out water bottles to those battling the Mumbai sun. Around me were people of all ages, most of whom had come in groups, and there were some in office attire too. Ahead of me was a Punjabi-Canadian couple who were in Mumbai for a holiday. The die-hard Apple fans had penciled a Mumbai store visit into their itinerary, and were keen to buy products too but were worried that the prices here would be much higher than they would in Canada. Behind me was a father- son duo from Mumbai who shared that they had mainly just come for the experience, but would consider buying a pair of Air pods. I was extremely interested to learn that this BKC store is one of Apple’s most sustainable outlets so far. It runs completely on renewable energy and is operationally carbon neutral. It seems to be a part of Apple’s journey towards carbon neutrality. The company has committed to use only recycled earth elements in its magnets, and increase the use of less carbon-intensive transport. <div type="image" title="apple2" msid="99682864" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Source: IANS&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> What’s in the store? As I stepped inside, Apple staff of different nationalities were standing at the door, welcoming us customers effusively. Although the store was teeming with customers, there were enough Apple Geniuses to guide and interact with each individual. One of the Geniuses told me that they were pleasantly surprised by the magnitude of the crowd. Another Genius who had been working with Apple for two years, said that she had anticipated it. The store was choc-a-bloc but there were many Geniuses all ready to answer questions and help make a purchase. Most visitors were exploring the different features of iphones, Macbooks and ipads. I, personally, was in awe of the variety of accessories on display, especially Apple Watch Straps. I enjoyed watching the interactive session being conducted by a genius and also trying out the noise canceling headphones at the Apple Arcade session. Most first-day visitors were lining up to buy accessories, but the store staff said that many laptops and phones flew off the shelves as well. This store seemed exceptional not just because it is the first in India but even in comparison to others the Mumbai store stands out. The store in New Haven, Connecticut, a much smaller structure, was a far less memorable visit. The staff here was much friendlier and more affable. The impressiveness of Apple BKC is far more akin to that of the Marina Bay Sands Apple Store, a spherical structure sitting on the water. Some other stores which I haven’t visited but seem mind-blowing are the Apple Tower Theatre in Los Angeles, USA and the Apple Piazza Liberty store in Milan, Italy. The Apple store in Dubai Mall has a falcon -themed design, with solar wings resembling the movement of the bird opening. The store in Fifth Avenue in New York, an all-night retail store also known as the ‘Cube’ which has a spiral staircase leading to a grand hall below the plaza where it is located. The multilevel Regent Street Store in London, England not only has the longest custom made luminous ceilings panels in the world but is also listed as a historical façade.  The company is also offering a month free trial for users who would like the test the service before officially subscribing.  Google Stadia, on the other hand, will offer casual gaming as well as heavy gaming titles like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Doom (2016). The draw here is that Apple Arcade will not be able to offer graphic intensive games. The explanation is simple. Apple wants you to be able to play games online and offline where the speed of your internet connection is not a determinant so graphic heavy games would take up too much space.  Stadia doesn’t need you to download the game. It is a cloud based gaming service. The aim is to allow users to play games online that would normally require expensive hardware within Google Chrome, provided they have a good internet connection. According to the company, users will need at least 25 mbps of speed to play a game at 60 frames per second in Full HD resolution. Google’s edge Google Stadia may require a better internet connection in order for you to play its games but it can be accessed by anyone who has access to a Chrome browser. As of August 2019, Google Chrome dominates in the web browser market share with over 50% market share, according to <a href="https://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php">W3Counter</a>. Apple Arcade will be available to smaller pool of users since its restricted to users with Apple devices. So, even though Apple Arcade has launched ahead of Google Stadia, it’s unlikely to accumulate the same level of interest. According to <a href="https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/mobile/worldwide">StatCounter</a>, Android has 76.23% market share whereas iOS only has 22.17% market share worldwide. In India, that disparity is even <a href="https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/mobile/india">more pronounced</a> with Android dominating with 93.02% market share and iOS limited to 2.65%. Apple Arcade is launching before Google Stadia and is competitively priced — but it has a huge disadvantage

Apple has once again rejected <keyword id="9080255" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook-gaming-app">Facebook Gaming app</keyword> on the iOS App Store, as it is a direct threat to the livestream gaming service <keyword id="7462995" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple-Arcade">Apple Arcade</keyword>. According to the New York Times, this is the fifth time Apple has decided to reject the Facebook Gaming app. Facebook team is not surprised by Apple's decision, as they have been trying to launch the Facebook Gaming app on the App Store unsuccessfully since February. "Games are by far the most lucrative category of mobile apps worldwide. Apple's App Store, the only officially approved place for iPhone and iPad users to find new games and other programs, generated about $15 billion in revenue last year," said the report. Apple claims that the App Store rules do not allow third-party apps to distribute games as a separate platform. The tech giant apparently doesn't want its own App Store and Apple Arcade business to be affected by allowing Facebook Gaming on its App Store. The App Store, now in 175 countries and regions, is being visited by over half a billion people each week. Apple Arcade is offering users unlimited access to the entire catalog of more than 100 exclusive games, all playable across iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, and Apple TV. Such stories must guide the person to be looking where they need to look when key action unfolds, or to react in specified ways if their involvement is necessary. Apple, with its connections to Hollywood storytellers via Apple TV, is well-positioned for this in a way that, say, Microsoft with Hololens is not. Apple's partnership with Disney for the Vision Pro is a good example.While some may pooh-pooh the chances of this device, particularly with its astounding cost, and predict its fast demise, I disagree. In a few years, perhaps a decade, Apple will have all the pieces firing, and for a more reasonable price. Apple One launch confirmed for October 30, prices start at ₹195 per month

The patent was filed back on August 27, 2021, and was granted to Apple by the US Patent &amp; Trademark Office and the European Patent Office on March 31, 2022. With this grant, the company seem to be working on a range of gaming accessories for iPhone and iPad. Apple gaming controller — multiple designs According to the patent, the gaming controller can come in three different designs. The first one is very much similar to Microsoft’s Xbox controller which includes a thumb and a control button. Apple already supports Sony’s PlayStation and Xbox controllers with its devices. The second patent design is similar to the Nintendo Switch <keyword id="478420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gaming-console" source="Orion">gaming console</keyword>. It includes a snap-on design along with two modular controller units to the end of the controller. A similar controller was seen in ROG phones by Asus known as Kunai GamePad. The third design is like a folding pad similar to the iPad’s flip cover. According to the pictures, the cover flips out to present the interface along with a touch panel in between. It can have 4-way buttons on one side and control buttons on the other side. It will be interesting to see whether the touch panel will deliver notifications or not. Note that the information on this front is still limited and Apple is not even breathing about its plans to launch gaming hardware. What makes this seem true is its push towards <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/upcoming-games-on-apple-arcade-in-april/articleshow/90711057.cms">Apple Arcade</a> - its gaming service.  But in 2019, for the very first time, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/live-here-comes-apples-earnings/articleshow/71828021.cms">Apple India’s revenue took a hit</a>. Its revenue nosedived by over 10% from ₹13,049 crore during 2017-18 to ₹10,548 in 2019, according to regulatory filings by Apple to the Registrar of Companies. Troubled waters India has always been a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/a-short-trip-to-india-showed-me-just-how-badly-apple-is-screwing-up-in-the-worlds-biggest-democracy/articleshow/68021591.cms">difficult market</a> for Apple to crack. Consumers in India are price conscious and Apple’s phones are only getting more expensive. It doesn’t help that Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi and OnePlus heightened competition by offering high-end specs at cheaper prices. Apple isn’t entirely innocent either. The company depended on the Indian government to soften its regulation on allowing foreign companies set up shop if they <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/apple-iphone-mass-production-is-shifting-from-china-to-india-solving-a-key-problem-for-the-company/articleshow/68891132.cms">source 30% of their materials locally</a> — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/still-unable-to-bring-apple-stores-to-india-apple-is-establishing-flagship-outlets-instead/articleshow/65485724.cms">which didn’t happen</a>. Not only did this make the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/apples-iphone-problems-are-becoming-samsungs-problems-and-it-wants-to-sue/articleshow/69975021.cms">iPhones costlier</a>, it also meant that Apple didn’t have any physical stores in the country. While Apple waited, OnePlus and Xiaomi entered the market with their aggressive pricing and promise of flagship phones on affordable devices. In fact, OnePlus has the largest market share in India’s premium smartphone market, according to Counterpoint. This year, in particular, was tough on companies with the global slowdown in smartphone sales to which Apple was not immune. India’s weakening Rupee, which made imports more expensive, only made the situation worse. Apple’s delay in adding new features to its phones and taking its time to catch up to tech trends has also dulled the excitement that usually used to surround the launch of a new iPhone. In comparison, the constant launch of Android phones and the variety of their features has begun to seem more appealing to users. Brighter pastures ahead The government didn’t relax its rules for Apple but did so for single brand retailers at large. Either way, it now means that the company can open its signature <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/apple-store-to-launch-in-mumbai-soon/articleshow/69246612.cms">‘Apple Stores’</a> in the country. Reportedly, the first one is scheduled to come up at the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/indias-first-apple-store-opening-in-the-bandra-kurla-complex-in-mumbai/articleshow/71442026.cms">BKC Complex in Mumbai sometime next year</a>. Also, Apple is finally among the top ten smartphone brands in the country. According to Counterpoint, this is due to the price cuts on the iPhone XR and demand for the newly launched iPhone 11. Apple is also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/apple-arcade-is-launching-before-google-stadia-and-is-competitively-priced-but-it-has-a-huge-disadvantage/articleshow/71074810.cms">rumoured</a> to launch more of its global initiatives in India in the near-future like its payments service, Apple Pay. Hopefully, they would correct the unfortunate course that their India business has already taken. Apple’s revenue dips for the first time in India — falls by 10%

Today, that number has ballooned to over 6.7 million downloads.
And yet, for a viral game, Timberman feels remarkably like some classic old-fashioned fun, a bit like something you'd expect to see in the dusty corner of an arcade. Even the hero character, a burly lumberjack, feels a bit familiar as he furiously chops away at a neverending tree trunk, dodging left and right to avoid the descending tree branches.
To figure out the story behind Timberman's success, we talked to the game's creator, developer Pawel Jedrysiak, who spoke to us from his home in Poland.

"Timberman is our third app," said Jedrysiak, who would occasionally pause to type a word into Google Translate for clarification. "We were making money working in advertising by day. After hours, we were trying our skills at making games."
In the beginning, it wasn't going well. With two failed games under their belt, Jedrysiak started from scratch, focusing on who the main character of his next app would be.
"The first thing that I decided to start with was creating my hero. I started to generalize what sort of characters are very overused ... zombies, cowboys," Jedrysiak said. "I recall myself watching some American movie, 'Fargo,' I think. There was this scene with giant lumberjack statue. I began to think that this is a character that exists in the minds of people, but isn't so much explored."
From there, the focus turned to gameplay and animation, which Jedrysiak wanted to keep simple at first glance, but addictively difficult to conquer.

"I begin by creating an animation where the lumberjack is chopping down a tree, the tree was falling down, but not left or right," he said. "I remember thinking that this won't work."
And while the concept of dodging the descending tree branches is vital to Timberman's gameplay today, the rough concept was enough to get work started on the app.
"I sent this to our programmer and asked him how much time it would take to create the mechanics if I provided him with graphics," said Jedrysiak. "He said one day or two days. The first version of the game was created in 3 or 4 days. Later, it only took us a month."
After completing Timberman, the app was released to moderate success, reaching #1 in Poland and Russia's App Stores.
"In the beginning, we had the first peak of the game," Jedrysiak told us. "It was released on May 8th, and in one week we hit like 50,000 downloads per day. This was really cool. But from that moment, it started to slowly decrease."
Interestingly enough, the team took the app's slowing momentum as a sign that Timberman was likely on its way out.
"Most of the guys in our company were like, 'Okay we had some good times, but it's decreasing so bye bye, we should work on another title.'"
Jedrysiak, however, was hopeful that if Timberman could also top the charts in the Google Play store, the app could have a second wind.
Weeks later, that's exactly what happened.
"The game had a second birth like two weeks ago, and the second big peak was 600,000 downloads daily."
Suddenly, Timberman was at the #1 spot on Apple's App Store, and Jedrysiak and his Polish development team were thrust into the spotlight.
"The first day that I heard that the game hit #1 on the U.S. App Store, it was like 'I need to talk to someone in the U.S., because maybe the numbers are false,'" said Jedrysiak. "But then we checked our company mailbox, and we're getting 50 or 100 emails daily with offers to make some toys, or other platforms that would like to appear in our games, or some requests for the different games ... that was the moment I knew something was going on."

"When I heard Timberman was doing well, I bought myself a ticket to India for a vacation," said Jedrysiak. "I try to reward myself for when you get those best times. It's good to reward yourself with some sort of treat. I like traveling, when it comes to creativity. It's something I learned in advertising. To be creative, you need some new impulses to attack your brain."
Jedrysiak and his development team met at school while studying advertising. According to Jedrysiak, their studies helped them understand what was required in making a successful app - namely, face-to-face promotion at conventions, and social integration with platforms such as Twitter to help the app spread. 
Timberman's Twitter integration is extremely simple, but it promotes the same sort of competitiveness that caused people to brag about their Flappy Bird scores months ago.
"It was just publishing a screenshot of your score with a text we made in the game saying, 'High score, 1,000 points, can you beat me?' and we linked to the game," Jedrysiak said. "There was a pretty big number of those tweets appearing. This was cool because it started to spread pretty fast."
Like Flappy Bird, people keep returning to Timberman, too. Between 2.5 and 2.7 million people boot up the app daily, and those numbers mean Jedrysiak and his team are in the process of deciding not just what to work on next, but also who to work with.
"The point is that we would like to develop for a company," Jedrysiak said. "From the beginning, our target should be making games."
For now, Jedrysiak is biding his time, continuing his advertising work during the day, which he says keeps him from falling prey to the laziness quick wealth can bring.
"I used to work in freelancing, and it was a pretty hard thing," said Jedrysiak. "I was getting up from bed whenever I wanted, the days were extending. Something I could do from working at a company from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., I was extending into the whole night because I was taking breaks to watch TV or make food. You need structure. It's good for people to have this routine. It's easy to get lazy when you don't have deadlines." 
And while Timberman's success has certainly opened doors, much of the revenue generated from the in-app advertisements and ad-free "Timberman Golden Edition" was already spoken for, at least during the early days.
"We didn't even see this money until now, because we had to make some administrative stuff about the status of our company, and there were some tax issues," said Jedrysiak. "Right now, I have minus 5 dollars on my credit card, so I can't even get a train to work."
It's a temporary issue that explains why Jedrysiak and his team aren't sitting still and only relying on Timberman's continued success to keep them afloat.
In a world where <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-rise-falter-and-future-of-yo-2014-6" target="_blank">apps can fall from the ranks as fast as they rise</a>, Jedrysiak knows his team's value isn't only in just one app, but in the understanding of what makes for an addictively fun and successful mobile experience.
"Timberman is our biggest success so far," said Jedrysiak. "Our company's existed for one year. And this a thing that is still open. We will continue to develop Timberman. We will also think up other titles."
Even with new projects and possible partnerships on the horizon, Jedrysiak also hints there could still be more Timberman surprises still to come.
"We are also thinking of creating something that involves Timberman, but something bigger," said Jedrysiak. "Extend it in some way."
